It's a restaurant in a strip mall that could use a little interior updating but it was clean, service was friendly and quick and the food was tasty. We had the Birria tacos and Tres Amigo enchiladas with carnitas and both were really good. Meat was seasoned really well and a lot of it in both entrees. The consommé had an interesting flavor. This casual restaurant in a strip mall brings a little bit of Mexico to Richfield. The layout is pretty open, which allows diners to see across the entire restaurant, which includes a bar, a corner for performances, and an elevated waiting area. Both times I've gone, there have been several Mexican families and groups eating there, which is always a good sign. The menu is pretty standard for Mexican in Minnesota - tacos, burritos, enchiladas, chilaquiles, and tortas along with more traditional dishes like molcajetes. They also have fusion options like asada fries and Tex Mex tacos (served Taco Bell-style with lettuce, cheese and pico de gallo instead of the traditional onions and cilantro.) I ordered an elote, an al pastor taco and a lengua taco. Both meats were seasoned well and very tender. The al pastor wasn't as sweet as I've had at other restaurants, but was still very tasty. The elote had good flavor, though it could have used more chili powder and I personally prefer roasted corn to boiled. The most disappointing part of the meal was the chips and salsa - both salsas were pretty bland and watery and one had an offputting sourness. Yes, they were free, but better salsas would also have been great for the tacos. The restaurant can accommodate small and large groups, though service at times can be a little slow and mixed up - another table's food was brought to ours soon after we sat down. And we had to flag down someone to refill water and get help with the check. Overall, a pleasant and reasonably priced place for a filling meal. Not a lot of frills, but you don't pay for them either. Tips: the bills have a QR code printed on them, and they ask diners to pay online that way. But, if you have problems doing that, they can bring a credit card machine to your table. And, lively Mexican music is played throughout the restaurant, so not the place for a quiet conversation. read more

We had great food and service on a Thursday night. They have a bar and very large dining room. We were seated immediately. They bring you complimentary chips, red salsa, and an orange sauce. The orange sauce was tasty, but I have no idea what it was! The fajitas were tasty and served with sides. The a la carte tacos were amazing. The carnitas were well seasoned and so moist. This is one of our favorite neighborhood Tex-Mex places to grab some Mexican food. They have a pretty awesome mocaljete but you better bring a large group because it feeds 6-8 people otherwise you could take it as leftovers I guess but wouldn't recommend it. It's better at the restaurant. They have pretty good portion sizes and prices are reasonable. They have complimentary chips and salsa and queso to start of and to settle in. They have 2 for 1 house margaritas everyday! My husband really likes their margaritas! It's one of his favorite places. My oldest daughter and I shared the steak fajitas and if you want extra tortillas then there's an extra charge of $2.50 for 4. The steaks was not in strips like other places that offer Mexican food. But it was still good. The staff was attentive and friendly. They were very helpful and very serious about COVID protocols when my youngest daughter choked on a piece of ice and spit up. There are 2 very different ratings going into this. The food gets a solid 5 stars. It was SOO good! The service was a solid 2 stars. We went on black Friday around 2pm. There were a few other tables (maybe 2) but the servers were continuously standing at the bar talking. We had ordered a 2nd round of margaritas and the server basically forgot about it and was just standing at the bar talking with her coworkers. Over the past several months, El Tejaban has been changing their recipes and menu. El Tejaban has been my family's go-to Mexican restaurant for more than a decade -- we've been going so long, we remember their old location on the other side of Nicollet. The restaurant has changed from one of my top recommendations to mediocre at best. We will likely give them 1-2 more chances in the coming months. If things don't improve, we will start our search for a new Mexican restaurant. The reason we started coming all those years ago was the molcajete de carnes. It was a delicious and dark sauce with wonderful spiciness. Lately, it is a much lighter color and flavor sauce -- it almost tastes like Indian food instead of Mexican! The cheese used to be a nice non-melting cotija, but now it is generic gooey cheese. They no longer provide cilantro without asking, and are stingy with the limes. They changed from nice sticks of chorizo to a small amount of finely chopped up chorizo. Lately, they have killed their delicious complimentary chips and salsa. They used to be amazing fresh chips and they now taste like off-the-shelf chips. The salsas used to taste amazing and fresh, but have lately been altered to be much less good. The tomato salsa is now smooth instead of having nice chunks and fresh cilantro taste. The orange salsa is now bland and dull tasting, and much too mild in the spice department. The torta cubana has also suffered. They've significantly reduced the ingredients and portion size. read more

I very rarely will rate a place based on service, but I think I am making an exception here because calling service subpar is an understatement. I ordered ahead via DoorDash. When I got to the restaurant, I followed the instructions on the sign by the entrance to go to the bar to pick up my order. I get to the bar and no one is around. I waited 15 minutes before anyone even acknowledged me. Two people asked for my name, said nothing, disappeared, then I never got my food. On the third try, turns out my food was on the back counter the entire time and they claimed my name wasn't on the receipt, but then it was clearly labeled with my name. So I spent a total of 40 minutes there waiting for my food that was already ready. The food itself was nothing exciting. I ordered the birria tacos. I love this place because of the amazing food and the people. I'm also the kind of person that loves socializing and eating out can be pricey but I love coming to El Tejaban because they have great prices, especially happy hour! Appetizers: the nice part is sitting down and already having a snack. You receive chips and a couple salsas. Try the spicy one! Entree: it's so hard for my to pick my favorite entree but I'd say if I'm not trying to leave with a food coma, I love love love the traditional tacos. They're also super cheap and 2 of them is the perfect amount for me. My boyfriend can devour 3 or 4 of them. Dessert: the fried ice cream is always fun to break into. I've had fried ice cream other places and i haven't found one that is as good as here. I like that the ice cream isn't melting when they serve it and it's a really good sized dessert to share. I came here a coup times on a Saturday night and they have karaoke! I really enjoyed listening to the everyone sing songs in Spanish and like that the TV screens let everyone follow along. I think this is a great place for families and millennials. My parents love coming here too. I was here late on a Saturday night when some people sang karaoke but we requested a Drake song and it was so much fun when everyone sang along. Do I recommend? Yes! Even though I've lived around this area for so long I have never heard of this place until a friend recommended we go there. When we got there it was not very busy at all for a Sunday in the late afternoon. However, service was very slow and it took a while for the food to come out. I ordered a chimichanga with steak. All it came with was that and nothing else. It would have been nice if it was served with rice/beans like the other entrees and dishes. The chimichanga had good flavors and I chose to have it with the green sauce. It was large and very filling. The meat and everything inside tasted good. They also serve chips with salsa to you complimentary which is a nice touch. All in all, because of the slow service and food just being alright. It was pretty average to me. As a Texan, I'm always looking for great Tex-Mex here in MN, which I rarely find. Thankfully since moving to Richfield I have discovered El Tejaban. The food here truly reminds me of the food of my childhood: Mexican food, American style. Everything I've had at El Tejaban has impressed me. The food is flavorful and the portions are perfect (sometimes huge, I'm looking at you burrito chimichanga style.) One thing about this place that I should point out is that sometimes you will have a wait. I almost didn't write this because I don't want more people to find this spot but it's too good not to rave. First off, don't let the location fool you, when you walk in they have a great space with wonderful decorations and live music. As soon as we were seated, on a Sunday night there was no wait, they brought us chips and salsa. The pico is amazing and the chips are the only reason I'm not throwing up 5 stars. The chips were not bad at all but I'm overly picky when it comes to my dipping chips. I enjoy the thin, salty, and warm. Won't complain if there is a little lime on them either. However theses chips were a little too thick for me and were not warm. But enough about the chips - Seriously don't dissuade you from going here! We got margaritas, they have a variety to try along with a great tequila sections, something for everyone. We don't remember what it was called but the one with cucumber, limes, jalapeños and cilantro was one of the beat margs I have ever had. The meals were amazing. Quick service and we didn't wait long for our food. Even if we would have, the live music was wonderful! Got the chicken fajitas which were tasty and exactly what you want for fajitas. The combo de cecina was shockingly amazing with great cuts of meat and flavor that made you wanting more. Both had a great spiced flavor but were still drastically different. Using the shells to make tacos with the green salsa - so good. Both meals came with refried beans so we got to try both the black and pinto...both were some of the best beans we have had. Ever. My friends brought me here about 4 years ago and its web one of my favorite local businesses to support. The herdandez family has increased their following and its been busy on some nights they have live music. They also have karaoke but you don't want to hear my singing. Lol! This place is great for large groups. You can order food online or call. I'm not sure if they use grub hub delivery. I recommend trying the tacos because they're only like $2.50 and 2-4 will be just fine. You also get free chips and salsa. The traditional house margarita is my favorite but they have other flavors too. The inside is very warm with colors and Mexican paintings. El Tejaban used to be across the street (where another Mexican restaurant is now) but this location is nice and easy to move tables for larger parties. They can also move the tables and have a dance floor some nights. Overall I really do recommend you come here. I really like coming here when it's less busy like when they open or for some really good food after staying out late. read more

I am a little ashamed that I waited so long to write a review for El Tejaban. This is my go-to Mexican place because it's close and the food is usually pretty good. I debated between 3 or 4 stars because sometimes service is slow and you have to check take-out orders carefully to make sure they don't forget anything (especially if you order guacamole, as they often forget to include chips). But the food is good, the staff members are nice, there's plenty of parking, and it's one of the few Mexican places that offers full service so you don't have to order at the counter. Much of their menu is pretty standard Mexican fare like tacos, enchiladas, chimichangas, and fajitas. They do have a few unique items like molcajetes, which they say serve 2-3 but probably more (I haven't tried them but they look really big). On the weekends, they also have a masa menu where you can order a machete, oaxaca quesadilla, sopes, or a tlacoyo. Their masa items are all super tasty and large, so it's my favorite time to come here. Their meats are pretty standard (carne asada, carnitas, al pastor, etc.) so nothing super unique but typically they are well-prepared and well-seasoned. The salsas they bring you with chips is a little lackluster (like a plain tomato sauce on one, and I don't know how to describe the other) but I find that adding some hot sauce helps a bit. Guacamole is hit or miss as to whether it's bland but I ordered the fresh-made guacamole on my last visit and it was ridiculously tasty. I would say that food quality has almost always been good every time I visited or ordered take-out. Service is sometimes slow when you dine in, and that includes longer cooking times. That being said, even when service was slow our food has always come out hot and tasty, so I'm not complaining. The biggest concern is that they don't always refill water or offer more chips if you've been waiting a bit, and sometimes I've sat for quite a while waiting on the bill to come. The servers are always friendly though and I don't think it's ever that bad. The inside is spacious with plenty of booths and larger tables, plus a bar for people to sit. Overall, while it isn't anything fancy, El Tejaban has good quality food for very reasonable prices and I appreciate that they offer full service. read more

I sat for 15 minutes and asked twice before they took my order. They served pre-meal chips & salsa but the salsa was mild and bland. Tasted like watered down ketsup. I had a carne asada taco (soft shell, flavor OK) and cheese enchiladas with rancheros sauce. Enchiladas were about a "4" on a scale of 10. Sauce, like the salsa, was mild and bland. Stopped by El Tejaban Mexican Grill last night with a friend and when you first drive up, you just expect a store front shop, where you just order at the counter and chairs around the windows while you wait for your order... at least that's what I expected. LOL Last night was my second time visiting this establishment, the first I was craving shrimp tacos and asked a woman who worked in the strip mall if the food was any good. The one thing she stated was, "I've never eaten there, but they ALWAYS have consistent business, so they must be good." ..and quote. So that's how I ended up there the first time. Last night we went more for convo and margharita's.. Ambiance: I gave my surprise of the large space. It's filled with booths along the north wall, a bar at the east wall, kitchen behind and the room is filled with some tables. The two times I've been there were always a few tables of customers eating. Usually two or three girls working and some men in the kitchen. When you first walk in, there's a hostess station and menus, once you walk thru the double doors. Food: Regardless if you order food or not, you're given chips and salsa. Thankfully the sauce is not some Pace Paconte type sauce... it was a little bland tho (I put habenero sauce in ours to liven it up). and it also comes with a second sauce (idk what is is, but it puts me in the mind of the special sauce on a big mac at mc'donalds.) We ordered a Mexican pizza, half chicken. It was decent.. a little bland, but the pico de gallo on it taste fresh. I kinda liked the chicken mexican pizzas at Taco Bell better... unfortunately. My pizza kinda reminded of a quesadilla. They have a good happy hour with $3 house margaritas and they also have specials during the week. Last night would have been $5 beef nachos, i believe. I had the tacos, make sure you use that lime that comes with the tacos, the burrito (enchiladas style) puts Chipotle to shame also make sure you put the potatoes with it as a topping.. Tejaban is our go to Mexican place in Southwest Minneapolis for hole in the wall style Mexican American cuisine. When we heard they were changing locations to move to a larger space we were both excited to not have to wait so long for a seat but devastated that our lives would be missing Choriqueso for months at a time. Well finally the wait is over! Tejaban 2.0 has opened across the street and it is a wonderful upgrade for the owners.
