We had an interesting experience here. It was my first time being here but others in my party had been here before. It was close to 9pm and some members of our party got here a few minutes before us and confirmed with staff that we could get food (from the front fast/casual counter) and eat it back in the bar but the restaurant part was closed. A lot? I know! Maybe 2-3 minutes after we arrived we seen a staff member locking the doors so we asked again if they were open/closed or what was going on and they pretty much said the restaurant is closed but you can still order (as they didn't put the food up yet). We started to order (thinking that the bar was still open), the person making our orders asked if we were dining in or to go, in which we replied dining in. It was a few minutes after 9pm and they were indeed closed - they did allow us to dine in, which is nice but by time we got to the register and tried to confirm the bar was open they then said no, everything is closed. So basically they knew we wanted food and drinks and still allowed us to order food knowing the bar was closed. Not the biggest deal because it feels like everything in Mn closes early these days but it does feel wild that bars are closing at 9pm on Saturdays. I ordered a chicken tinga bowl, was able to pick all the toppings I wanted (salsa bar was closed), simple and easy. Food was good overall. My sister said she actually likes the food better from the front part vs the restaurant options. The staff were cleaning all the areas and even put a smaller trash can near our table for when we done. They also put the wet floor sign to close off the back area. Floor was indeed very slippery on our way out. I do appreciate them letting us dine in after they were closed but it felt like in a round about way. Didn't really care for the overall vibes.

Having lived a short drive from Maya for a while now, we finally got around to trying out Maya Cuisine after a crazing for some good Mexican food. We were pleased with the reviews and offerings. I went to pick up after ordering and that's when it started not being so great. After walking in and awkwardly walking around because the signage wasn't clear on pickups/seating/etc. No less than 5 staff looked at me and said nothing. I went to a few different "wait to be served" signs and same thing. But the kicker is there were staff throughout who saw me, just didn't say anything, super awkward. I ended up going to the bar after 10 minutes to ask where to get my order but someone stopped me to ask if I needed anything. He pointed me to where to go. By then, our food was lukewarm at most and the 8 minute drive home, it was cold. My chile relleno had watery liquid pooling at the base. And the queso didn't come with chips? The queso was also very coagulated by the time we got home - much better once we warm it back up. For $38 before a tip, I expect a bit more. Anyways, the food was good BUT cold and not at its peak. Not sure if it was the time it took to actually get it? We ate it and enjoyed it, will give it another shot but hope for at least a little customer service.

I've been eating my way down Central and after seeing the reviews, I wanted to compare this to another popular place right up the street! We walked in on a whim to see if their dining room was open. It was not. As others have stated there's not a lot of signage or information regarding what times they actually serve food if you're looking for waiter service. There was quite a line for the counter, so we decided to order delivery another time. Later we ended up ordering a Torta, the Maya Burrito, and a new menu item Quesabirrias. We also got chips but they came without salsa. The chips themselves were tasty though with little pops of salt. The burrito was hefty and good, but even with the seared pepper in the center, there wasn't much flavor. The Torta was also filling, but lacked sauce. The Quesabirrias looked like they would super delicious, especially with the dip, but were also quite bland. This is just one person's opinion, and they are clearly popular! I would say they're still worth a try. Street parking, but you can order delivery through apps as well.

Get the burrito. Tacos are also available but the burritos can't be beat for the price. You'll get to choose from a ton of different toppings from barbacoa to carne asada. Veggies are all free, but avocado costs extra even though it isn't listed as extra on the menu. Seating is all indoor. Staff speaks English and Spanish fluently. The code to the restroom is printed on your receipt. The easiest parking is across the street on the side roads.

Amazing food and night out for the price! My fiance and I stopped in here for a late dinner and were seated in the back "bar" section. We were sat right next to another group which felt a bit close given the many other open spaces, but they left fairly quickly which quieted things down. We ordered a mango and lime margarita because they were out of the pina colada today, but both were still a good classic marg. We ordered queso fundido which came alongside the complementary chips and salsa which came prior to our entrees. I ordered the enchiladas rancheras, while my fiancé ordered the burrito. Hers came with a side of queso which was a nice addition. Overall the food was very good for the price and we both left with enough for lunch tomorrow.

Love the burritos at Maya! The restaurant has cool colorful decor inside and Sunday brunch seems really popular. Tamales are also tasty! I haven't tried table service but the fast service option has been fantastic the 4 or 5 times I've been here.

I remember the first time I moved to MN in fall of 2015 because of college and I felt so disconnected from my roots. A friend took me out to dinner to this place and the second I walked in I almost teared up as I saw a woman making tortillas by hand and brought fond memories of my mom. Tip is if you ever see anyone taking the time to make fresh tortillas by hand you can have a sense that the food is going to be good! I went with 3 tacos one of asada, Al pastor, and tinga. The 3 tacos were so good! I still think 7 years later this is one of the best places to get authentic Mexican food. I will say the tinga is a shredded chicken with onion and chipotle which has a quick! I definitely finished my glass of horchata quickly! I love the rice and beans from here as they both have great flavor and love seeing Mexican rice as the color I grew up seeing which is an orange color. The people here are always kind and I love that I get to order in Spanish. I'm not only proud that I share the same roots as the workers here but I am proud that whenever I come there is always a good amount of people that come support this business and cuisine. Maya has been a staple in staying close to my roots and I'm glad it's a restaurant that is still here!

This is such a fun and filling restaurant to try especially during their lunch buffet!! You pay at the front and then you're seated. You enter their atmospheric buffet dining area and there are tables and set ups of great food including a whole tamale station and a churro station. Everything is labeled for you including dietary restrictions and that was so helpful for myself as someone who is vegan. Worth the price and worth going to!

If you are looking for authentic Mexican, this is your spot! They have a walk up food bar, like chipotle, where you can order and customize all of your food! Hot tip, it's even better than chipotle and guac is free :). I got the taco platter which I was so excited that I could get three different meats! My favorite one was the chipotle chicken, so flavorful and delicious! My friend ordered the quesadilla and let me tell you that cheese pull on it was amazing! I opted for black beans and rice as a side and damn that rice was good!! I might have to say this has been my favorite Mexican food I have had in the twin cities, DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS SPOT! Another good item we got but was not pictured was the queso and guac with chips. Holy moly was that queso good!!!

    Nachos
    Robert W.

If you want Mexican food in Minneapolis, head over to Central Ave and you'll find so many wonderful Mexican restaurants. This time we had the pleasure of visiting Maya Cuisine and it was a great example of the awesome Mexican food the Twin Cities have to offer. This time we ordered the nachos to share (chicken on the side since we were sharing with a vegetarian friend) and I ordered the burrito with barbacoa for myself. The nachos were pretty good but nothing special but I won't hold it against them since we asked for the meat on the side. The burrito was awesome, packed very full with meat, rice, beans and more. I do wish however that guacamole was included in the burrito, and that the tortilla was cooked a bit before I ate it. But, these are small issues and I'd be very happy to come back and eat again at Maya Cuisine

Anyone have the menu? Would this place accommodate food restrictions?

On their menu they have marked vegetarian items. But nothing else labeled (vegan or gluten free). I am not sure if they can accommodate allergies either. Pictures of the menu are on yelp (filter the photos for menu)

I love this place, and the food is on par with a lot of Mexican food in California. Most recently, we went to celebrate a birthday. We go here because they are veggie friendly. My only complaint would be that things could be a bit saucier...but that's a preference thing and we get salsa on the side for it. We also got chips and guac -- delicious as well! It's a bit whitewashed and leans more Cal-Mex than anything you'd find in Mexico, but I'm not complaining. I love a good California burrito and asada fries, so this style has its place (especially in Minnesota). Service can be slow. It took us about an hour to get two burritos yesterday and the restaurant didn't look busy. Maybe they were just short staffed. My main issue is the salsa. They limit you to one packet per person, and it's not the slightest bit spicy. And where are the limes? This place desperately needs a salsa bar with real options and some heat. Bump up the salsa selection and stop rationing it, and this would be a solid spot. For now, I'll keep getting this to go and buying my own salsa and limes.

The portion was pretty small, they were a little awkward to eat, and they just didn't stand out flavor-wise. The Cucumber Watermelon Salad, on the other hand, was amazing. It was light and refreshing, making it the perfect addition to the meal. The roasted sweet potatoes were another favorite--they had so much flavor and were cooked perfectly. We also ordered the Corn Elote Chipotle, which was absolutely delicious. I could have easily eaten the whole bowl myself. For tacos, we tried the Pork Carnitas, and they were fantastic.
