You have to look carefully for the storefront, as it is in a very small strip center tucked in near the train station on Lancaster Ave. the menu has all the expected Mexican food items, and the servers and kitchen staff are very friendly! I ordered the steak fajitas, which is my goto barometer for Mexican food. My wife ordered a steak burrito. Our respective meals were really good. Their house made sauces were also on point! So I had mixed feelings writing this review. On one hand - the poor waitress just didn't listen to a darn thing we ordered (salsa and chips became guacamole and chips. Chicken enchiladas with green sauce came with red sauce. Split the check down the middle, only one card was charged). On the other hand - EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING. It was nice evening so we sat outside on their front porch. There are two tables of 4. I ordered the wet burrito with shrimp and green sauce. Because of COVID-19 the food came out in Styrofoam containers and with plastic ware. The sodas are bottled soda. The menu is small but large enough for everyone to find good to eat. Very solid Mexican place. This will now be in our rotation of restaurants when we are in the area. A lot of people ordered take out but I don't think that most Mexican dishes travel very well. For instance, the tortilla chips looked homemade and amazing but would be soggy nachos in no time flat. The prices were reasonable but I felt like the amount of meat used in the fajitas was a bit skimpy. Plenty of peppers and onions but honestly struggled to get a bit of pork into every bite while I was making my 3 small tortillas. The kid's cheese quesadilla was delish (I helped finish the large portion) but my daughter was actively going back and forth from the fries to the quesadilla. The beef quesadilla was also on point. My wife finished it and was quite happy with her choice. My sister-in-law got the wet burrito and was unable to finish it because of it's massive size. But she also spoke very highly of it. The two of them split the flan but I was saving room for Handel's Ice Cream as it was on our way home. It was a bit cold inside as if they were trying to save money on the heating bill, the waiter was in a legitimate jacket during the meal and I kept mine on as well. The bathroom did not have a diaper changing table which wasn't ideal. Between these couple issues and the lack of meat in the fajitas, I can't in good conscious award them 5 stars, but if they fixed a few of these things they could easily have that. read more

We stumbled on this restaurant after deciding not to wait for a nearby one and we're not disappointed. I've been to a lot of Mexican restaurants across the US and this was one of the best in both taste and value. I got the Chicken Fajitas which were well seasoned beyond the norm I've experienced elsewhere. My wife got the steak tacos and liked them as well, although she felt the steak was slightly spicy for her liking. We finished with the churros which were also very good. Such a fun little hole in the wall Mexican joint. The food was delicious, fairly standard Mexican food. The servers are friendly and we enjoyed their complementary margaritas. As a first timer I was pleasantly surprised he offered margarita in this BYOB restaurant. My dinner partner brought a flask of tequila for a "floater". We love getting takeout from El Tio. Ordering and paying over the phone is easy and the curbside pick up is perfect for the current circumstances. We really enjoy the mixed fajitas and you get a nice large portion of chicken, beef, shrimp, onions, and peppers. The quantity of fixings isn't nearly enough for the filling, but the meat and veggies are tasty on their own anyway. The pork al pastor is also yummy and we like their quesadillas too! The Molé was incredible. So delightfully fluffy and smooth on the palate with a delicate balance of sweet and earthy. I'm no Molé connoisseur, but this version was excellent. Unfortunately the Al Pastor was completely lost in this dish. The burrito was dominated by beans and rice. I pork I could barely notice was veiled in the strength of the other ingredients. El Tio is a classic mom-and-pop Mexican establishment in a small shopping center in Berwyn. It has a very casual vibe, with some tables and booths, and very friendly service. I was in the mood for nachos, so we split an order nachos and their pina fajitas. For most options, you get to choose your meat from a list on the menu. We chose el pastor for our nachos, as well as black beans. The nachos were a hit! It was a heaping pile of tortilla chips, topped with black beans, chihuahua cheese, pastor, tomatoes, guacamole and sour cream. Our server also gave us sides of mild red salsa and salsa verde to accompany our nachos. The pina fajita was essentially a pineapple filled with chicken, shrimp, peppers and onions, pineapple and cheese, served with a side of warm tortillas and rice. This was truly a fun and flavorful dish to split. This is a solid place if you're in the mood for comforting and flavorful Mexican food. read more

I don't come here often, but when I come the food is always on point, and the service is good. It's on Lancaster Ave, but you can easily miss this place if you're not paying attention. It's in a tiny shopping block with only 3 other stores. There is a limited parking in the front, but more parking in the back. It has been a while since I came here, but there was a really friendly waitress who efficiently took our orders, brought the food without mixing them up, and always hospitable. I didn't see her today, but the service was still good. One of my friends suggested this place to me saying it's an authentic Mexican restaurant and my first thought was "uh, right, authentic Mexican restaurant in Berwyn." I stand corrected, it's very delicious and yes, pretty authentic. I usually get their 3 tacos for $8; my favourite is fish tacos. Their al pastor is good too, but I tried the steak today and they are bit chewy so I will stick with fish and al pastor. I went with some of my friends and they got wet burritos, various tacos, and mix molcajete. You can choose various sauces based on their hotness/spiciness. They don't skimp on quantity either. When I get my soft tacos they usually come with 2 tortillas to a taco, and I divide the fillings (because they do come pretty full) into the 2 tortillas. Their food is not greasy and always tastes fresh. Unless you are pure beef lover just skip the beef and choose other fillings. As I said beef is a bit chewy and I didn't quite enjoy the steak tacos. If you dine in you also get free regular margarita or strawberry margarita, both are yummy Price is really decent here considering it's in Berwyn, it's not a high end place and the seating area is not fancy, but it's comfortable. You can see the cooks making your food because it is an open kitchen. Serving staffs are usually friendly and efficient. Food is pretty awesome. Still super solid. It had been ages since I went back and so glad I did. I think they painted the walls to be warmer and re arranged some booths. BYOB and solid, even on a chilly almost rainy night they had lots of people. This little strip across the train station is always so busy and there's good parking in the back. El Tío is a solid bet for fast, casual Mexican. My group was on our way to see a show at Footlighters Theater (around the corner) and stopped by for a quick meal, and we were impressed by the quality at a strip mall joint. The three of us ordered enchiladas in green sauce, enchiladas in mole sauce, and the chile relleno, and all 3 were pretty good. The favorite was definitively chile relleno! I found the mole to be a tad too sweet for my taste, so beware of that if you like your mole to be more savory than sweet. I wouldn't say the food is the most typical you will experience in Mexico (having lived there for a couple of years), but the quality isn't bad, and the service is super friendly! We actually saw a staff member run outside in the rain to bring a forgotten credit card to a diner who had left a couple of minutes before. My boyfriend and I stopped by this small Mexican restaurant after work. The server serving us was very friendly and provided us with great service. We ordered Chimichanga - Al Pastor, a Veggie Burrito and a Churro Cup Ice- cream. The food was simple and delicious. The portion sizes are huge and you can easily have leftovers for a second meal. They also have plenty of options for vegetarians! And in case you were looking for a spicy kick, don't forget to try their Habanero sauce. I visited El Tio on a Friday night. The first thing I noticed when visiting was that they offer free margarita mix. Customers just have to bring their own tequila! I thought that was pretty cool. I wasn't aware of this so I wasn't able to partake. Great idea though! I ordered the verde, shrimp enchiladas with extra cheese. It had a total of 3 enchiladas. They were topped with a lot of shredded lettuce and crumbled chihuahua cheese. It also came with a side of refried beans and Mexican rice, which is always a plus! Overall, it wasn't a bad dish. However, I do wish there was more flavor though as I personally thought it was under seasoned. I was hoping for a little more spice, kick or something! I also didn't like how there was so much lettuce atop of the enchiladas. I felt like I was eating more of a salad rather than enchiladas. I did see other creative dishes being served at other tables. There was a dish where shrimp was being served in a pineapple. I also saw a massive size burrito covered in sauce. I'll have to try one of these dishes next time. read more

The tastes are all distinct and well done, not too much cheese, but still plenty. We love el pastor because of the sweet pineapple and the mole sauce for the chocolatey/chili flavors. Any combo you order with these two will be a winner. We've been back twice and the food is very consistent, we love it and it will be in our regular rotation for restaurants! Our group had 2 orders of enchiladas (pictured with the green salsa), fajitas, carnitas tacos, chips and salsa, and churros (other picture). As you can see from the photos, they take care in presentation, and I assure you the food is as mouth-wateringly yummy as it looks. The portion sizes were generous for the price, the dishes were bursting with flavor, and the churros were quite excellent. I would note a warning that the hot green salsa is reasonably hot and my medium-spice tolerance was tested. Next time I would choose mild. The interior is very casual- traditional Mexican food vibe. What a disappointment! Ordered Nachos for appetizer and all that was is corn cheeps over half melted cheese. My 9 year old liked it because it was his first nachoes ever. Order a taco salad and I am not an expert on msg but I strongly felt like there was some msg like ingredient on my chicken taco salad (with a hair). Nothing special, will not go back.
