This spot has an old-school feel that washes over you when you walk in. The bartenders wear these navy admiral like uniforms and are all probably 60+. The crowd, at least around 6 PM when there aren't swarms of people, seems to be mostly locals who know the bartenders pretty well. All good signs. Sat down and ordered my favorite bar drink (Clara con limon --- beer with fanta), and proceeded to order the solomillo (sirloin) with foie, Patatas bravas, and boquarones (sardines). I did have a friend with me, so don't judge! All of the food was absolutely on point. The steak with foie was moist, tender, and rich. The grilled onions work really well with the steak and foie --- makes for some excellent bread dipping once you've polished off all the goodies. The bravas are excellent --- how can you go wrong with crispy potatoes, mayonnaise, and hot sauce. The sardines had a lovely tartness from the vinaigrette and were not fishy at all. My friend, a Barcelona resident, says these are the best sardines in town. I'll take her word for it. When it's all said and done you had yourself a very fine meal in a pretty cool atmosphere. For those who can't speak Spanish there is English on the backside of the menu (saw a few folks struggle communicating with the bartenders I Spanish ... Who then simply turned over the menu to reveal English). I'm pretty sure they don't accept credit cards and be sure to bring a good amount of cash if you're ordering the steak. This isn't your typically super cheap tapas place --- The steak with foie will put you back €22 for a good 8 ounces. It's a decent portion --- but I'm not one to share and can easily finish one plate by myself! It's worth every penny and then some. I can see why many folks talk about how crowded and cramped it can get. This was worth a tapas stop near the Barceloneta. The guy behind the counter deafeningly yells out your order and it is a busy place with mostly a long counter for seating. Both the locals and tourists seem to equally know about this place. The foie gras was a steal at 9 eu! Loved the anchovies, olives, cheese and shishito peppers. This is an authentic locals bar in Barceloneta, close to the Metro station. The bar is long and incredibly narrow - so be prepared to squeeze past other customers to get a seat. (Everyone else does). As well as the relative scarcity of tourists (perhaps not now it's on Qype...), they do authentic, filling Catalan tapas and serve their own beer: that's right, this is a brew-pub, (or should that be 'brew-bar'?) and they do a lovely 7% amber coloured lager, Vaso de Oro Rubia (just ask for 'rubia'). The staff were friendly and efficient, as you'd expect, and the prices are a joy compared with some of the inflated tourist haunts around. Recommended. read more

Vasa de oro ended up being one of my favorite restaurants in Barcelona! It's right around the corner from Barceloneta beach, tucked into the neighborhood right along the shore. Amazing food and drinks, great service. Their craft beer on tap is excellent and probably some of the best beer we had in Spain. We really enjoyed their foie gras as well. There are also a lot of simpler foods, such as their ham/cheese sandwich but that was still mouth-watering as well! I recommend you go there during non-peak hours to try and snag a seat at the bar or one of the surrounding tables, otherwise be prepared to stand and wiggle your way into the bar area. read more

As it is a relatively small, narrow space that seems to be pretty crowded at all times, we would have skipped it if it would not have been for his message - but now we know that it would have been a pity to miss this opportunity. We got seated at the bar and received the bilingual menus, but already knew what to order - the steak with green peppers and their beer are great, but their Russian salad is the absolute highlight - if you listen carefully, you will hear that every second word seems to be the 'rusa', and that is for a very good reason. This was our first stop for a quick bite after checking into our hotel. The beer selection seemed to be different varieties of a house brew or some other local brewery (all available in bottle or draft). Either way they were a welcome change from the usual beer fare you find at most places in Spain. We ordered two tapas, blood sausage and peppers. Both very good and recommended. We arrived around 4:30 on a weekday and there was a small crowd of what seemed to be locals. Staff was friendly and there was no communication issues with my poor Spanish and their Eglish, which was a little better. Prices were reasonable. This place! So it is literally a little hole in the wall with maybe like 6 tables total and a bar but the food is out of this world! An absolute must have is the beef tenderloin and foie gras. That was the absolute best steak I have ever had. It's so tender and absolutely melts in your mouth. We finished off our meal with a Santiago cake- an amazing little cake made from almond flour and oranges and served with a Port-like white wine. I highly recommend pouring the wine over the cake. I was really disappointed after trying this place out. Based on the reviews I was really pumped about this place. Even after walking in and having a seat, I even felt better thinking that this was a good find. However, to be honest, this was my least favorite dining experience while in Barcelona. We had the croquettes, bravas, smoked salmon, fois gras, and the Granjero sandwich. Croquettes were okay.. nothing stood out, but nothing is ever really wrong with deep fried meat. The Bravas weren't seasoned but instead had a mayo-like and spicy sauce smothered on top- the sauce made the dish. The smoked salmon was good quality but again, nothing special, just doused in some olive oil and salk/pepper. The fois gras was probably the best thing here, with a nice touch of sauteed onions. And the sandwich- well forget about it! I had high hopes for this, as it was ham, lettuce, mayo, and an egg grilled on some buttery bread. But it was like eating mush.. no flavor at all! And you would think with ham, it would at least taste like salt.. but no, not in this case... Overall, bland tapas that didn't stand out. The shocker was the fact that for all this, plus 3 cokes, the bill came out to 44€. Do yourself a favor, and find a less expensive place that will have better flavor than this place read more

Hidden gem. This place serves some of the best food that I had the pleasure of enjoying in Barcelona. Neighborhood bar where it seems the locals like to hang. We stopped by for a quick bite and a drink of course! The men behind the counter are very straight forward but courteous and it was nice to see them wearing captain of the ship-type shirts. It was kind of old school and respectable. The tripe was off the charts incredible. It was so tender it melts in your mouth. Cooked with garbanzo beans, it's super hearty so have it with a piece of bread, or two. Olives are incredibly good, the best to date, until I found it was stuffed with anchovies. In my mind I don't like anchovies. Yes I am mental, but I un knowingly ate half the plate. We rolled in at around 11PM, grabbed a little corner table and almost immediately a server came with the menu. Ordered a few beers (their regular is blonde aka rubia, and their special is dark). I initially ordered one of each, but our waiter patiently mentioned that perhaps a dark is too strong). Delicious beer, paired really well with all the food we got: - Anchovy Canape (sandwich): delicious, I don't know how they do it. Just get it. - Olives: not too salty, i love olives! - Papatas: a bit heavy, and those mayos are just dangerous. - Salmon pan fried: pretty basic, nothing too exciting, but they are delicious. - Chorizo, fried: way way too salty, we didn't even finish it. - Foie Gras: SO delicious! They slightly pan seared it along with chopped shallots. We showed up on a weeknight at around 7pm, and it was packed! This place is really small and narrow to begin with, but with everyone in there, it was hard to find a spot. Expect to stand. The guys behind the counter were very friendly, and they helped us get our food despite the row of people between us and the counter. The beer was fine, nothing to write home about, but the tapas...ohhh! I definitely had a mouthgasm. The first few things that we ordered were very tasty -- the spicy tuna, the padron peppers, and the manchego cheese. The last thing that we got was a surprise -- we had tried to order one of their dishes, but they were all out, and so the guy behind the counter recommended their prawns. We were disappointed at first, since it seemed like the prawns would be plain, but I am so VERY glad that he recommended them. The prawns ended up being my favorite dish during our entire stay in Barcelona. They were fresh, cooked with the shell fully on, just on a griddle (I think), but they were cooked to *utter perfection*. The shells slid off easily, and the meat was so tender and juicy. Just think of the most tender and juicy piece of lobster or shrimp that you've ever had and know that it was nothing compared to this set of heavenly morsels. There are so many doors on this corner building I must have looked like an idiot trying to pull on one closed door after another. This place is cash only. Padron Peppers are good everywhere in Spain and if you haven't tried it yet, now would be a good time to try it. The beef here is definitely special. It has a very earthy taste to it as if the cow was happily grass feeding in the open and now it rests in my belly and I feel just as happy. I think the foie gras can be skipped as it can be had everywhere in Spain. Great beer and great tapas. Got the Clara which is a pretty light beer (which honestly is just the type of beer I love). In terms of Tapas, you have to order the Steak and Foie Gras.... was probably the best steak I had throughout my trip in Europe and the Foie Gras was cooked perfectly. The chorizo was also a must have, absolutely amazing. This place was everything we needed on our last night in Barcelona. And by that I mean AUTHENTIC. When you have to order using sign language, you know you're not in a touristy place. Reasonable prices, very quick service, delicious flavours and a buzzing, local atmosphere. The room is an awkward long thin shape which adds to the local café feel but do go early so you get space at the counter - it filled up very quickly after we arrived. You'll be sitting on tall stools or standing, not as uncomfortable as you may think. Definitely recommend the cheese. Oh and the and chillies! They're not too hot but rather charred to perfection. Vermouth is of course mandatory. Don't go here if: you're looking for something super creative or particularly different. Do go here if: you want something simple, affordable, typical and tasty. An old favorite! An excellent local cerveceria in Barceloneta. If I remember correctly my parents and I first tried it from a Lonely Planet suggestion. Even so, it is packed with locals and not a touristy destination at all. When you go, do be forewarned that there will likely be barely any room. You will be eating standing. But all is ok because the food is divine! Order a beer or wine. Order pimientos de padron, cheese, almonds, jamon serrano and steak with foie gras. I don't think I've ever gone to the same restaurant twice while on vacation until now. I fell in love with Barcelona when I visited and Vaso de Oro played no small part in that. The restaurant has a hectic, local feel. Food-wise, highlights for me were the steak and foie gras (excellently seared foie gras on a slices of medium rare steak), pimientos de Padrón (crisped and salted to perfection), and the Manchego cheese (staple when in Spain). Fabulous local tapas bar that's shaped around one long bar counter, and SO packed at about 11pm that I doubted whether we'd fit inside! The two of us managed to squish in and pounced on 2 inches of bar space which we gradually grew to 12 inches. It's loud and busy and definitely not for the faint-hearted - I swallowed my nerves and summoned up some 15 year old Spanish knowledge, whilst trying to catch the eye of one of the old-timers behind the bar who were constantly serving, clearing, shouting and occasionally singing! I managed to shout over an order for two beers but was too embarrassed to be the only person in the place to ask for a menu - so instead we cheated and checked it out on yelp's photos instead ;) I admit to being quite impressed with myself for ordering our dishes, including asking for the spicy potato dish that the guys next to us had. We spotted one of the 3 tables in the corner come free and nabbed it quick, which was much easier to eat at than in the bar crush. The tapas were great - we restrained ourselves with 4 dishes (as it was actually our second dinner of the evening eek!) and I liked them all but especially the classics of padron peppers and manchego cheese. Here there is no concept of any waiting line, you just get in, look for a place and make yourself comfortable. Simple, no rocket science. After 5-6 minutes of wait and search I was able about to find a spot at the end of the bar. Menu is very simple, all are Spanish classics. I ordered glass or beer, with a plate anchovies. Then I ordered fried potatoes and fried chorizo. Service was super quick here. Good was good, beer was great. And finished my meal with spanish coffee. Super experience. read more
