There's no shortage of strong reviews for Maitea, so this one will be brief. I went at 4:30 pm. The early bird special in the US, but an off-hour for Spain. One side of the restaurant is a tapas bar, the other has tables I sat at the bar and had a few pintxos and the fish soup, which was particularly good. I tried 9 things and the only 3 things I enjoyed were the crispy patatas bravas (7.05), quail egg with sobrassada from Cal Rovira (2.45), and the fried green peppers from Gernika (10.95). My boyfriend and I came in at around 12, but they said they weren't serving lunch (aka the pintxos we had been looking for) until 1. So we decided to walk around the neighborhood and come back at that time. We started with foie gras hash, which was a little to heavy for us. After that, we decided to just stick with the pintxos, which are little open-faced sandwiches, held together with a toothpick. They are €1.80 each and they have a selection of hot ones you can order off the menu, as well as some premade cold ones that you grab yourself. At the end of the meal, they count the number of toothpicks you have and that's how they calculate the bill. We had so many of them (probably too many) but there were just so many we wanted to try! Plus it was our last meal in Spain so we wanted to make the most of it. I don't remember everything we had, but I really liked the Bomba, codfish with mousseline, and the smoked salmon with anchovy (?) from the cold selection. We didn't get the chance to try any other pintxo places, but I read that there are a lot of them that offer pintxos for €1. That being said, while Maitea was good, it is a little on the pricier side. €1.80 per sandwich adds up quickly. First introduction to Barcelona tapas and I got a great first impression of them! You can get cold tapas at the bar and order hot tapas off the menu; you can also order salads, entrees, and more expensive small plates to complement with the tapas, which we did. Although we had a wide selection of food, none of the dishes were disappointing at all. The tapas are served on top of a piece of bread, which gives a relatively balanced meal of protein and carbs. There a lots of other cafes in the area, but they were all dead while this one was hopping and for good reason. You can have a simple meal as fast or slow as you wish. Great place to have drinks, beer or homemade sangria, custom mixed fresh each pitcher. Popular locals gathering spot. Food is fantastic and varied from simple/safe to the more challenging for the adventurous. The staff is very accommodating and happy to explain all the dishes. According to Delicious Destination this place specializes in Pinchos/Pinxos so I figured if it's good enough for Zimmern it's good enough for me. Btw the 5 of us, we had 16 diff cold and hot pinchos as well as the seasonal specials: red peppers stuffed w spider crab, cod omelette, grilled calamari w Chantal's mushroom, and sea anemones w poached egg. Maitea is on several top Barcelona lists for tapas and pintxos. It's a bit further out from the touristy downtown areas but for those who dont mind the trek, it's one of the few places that are constantly open and serves food that is considered too early for Spainards! I guess North Americans hours of 5 pm and later is considered snack time and there are few restaurants opened between 5 pm and 7 pm. This casual place is really well known for their cold pintxos ... which is essentially a single small snack sized bite that is pierced by a toothpick. Maitea pintxos are quite generous in size which can probably easily get you 2 or 3 bites per pintxos and they're very reasonable at 1.5 Euros and up. You can easily make a meal of them... all with a large slize of crusty white country bread and topped with many different things like smoke salmon, sardines, tomatoes, chilled grilled vegetables, egg, ... tons of variety. If you are interested in the hot tapas and pintxos, you have to wait till after 8 pm for those to come out. If you want actual hot dishes, you can order them here ... but compared to the pintxos, they were definitely not as good. Good - Iberico pork ... generous portion of grilled pork with a side of soggy fries. The pork was well cooked with a bit of nice char and the flavour was wonderful. Any pintxos ... I happen to like the vegetarian ones here. I honestly believe if you come here to eat, get only the pintxos... best value, flavour and execution. Not so good - patatas bravas (soggy and oily), fried shrimp (more like sauteed, tough, and very expensive), squid with mushrooms (heavy smokey flavour that overpowers everything). There is very little seating here... its most likely a pintxos and standing up place to enjoy a glass wine with your plate of tapas. Service here is very laidback so don't expect to service to be very attentive. As long as here you're for a quite bite, great place but perhaps this isnt a great spot for a real meal. read more

Basically you help yourself to the cold pintxos displayed in front of you, and order any hot versions from one of the servers. Everything was super delicious - especially the fried artichoke one and anything wrapped in salmon. I really liked this place. They gave me a free shot just for checking in, which is always a good way to get me in the door. I ordered 4 pintxos to start off. I tried to sample from different parts of the menu in my selection. The chile relleno bacalao was interesting. Unfortunately, the bacalao got a bit mushy in the fried pepper. Needless to say, it was not my favorite. Also, on recommendation, I tried the hamburger. It was a pretty sad piece of beef with a lot of onions. Certainly not the best option. On the other hand, I had a piece of brie with olive oil and sweet apple something that was wonderful. I also really enjoyed the sopressada which was sweet, balanced, and delicious. The **Dates with Bacon** appeared in several reviews, so we tried them and they were pretty much what we expected. Very similar to the U.S. version. We also got the **Artichoke Heart Croquettes** and these were pretty mind blowing. Such juicy goodness! You can't go wrong in Spain with the third and final Yelper-recommended dish, **Jamon Iberico** with the traditional Tomato Rubbed Bread. The highlight of the meal for me was the **Codfish with garlic mousseline au gratin**. I've never had anything quite like it before! The garlic mousseline perfectly complimented the fish and wasn't too overwhelming. This dish was actually recommended by the server. Good call! Service here is helpful and has a decent comprehension of English. One of the things I love about Barcelona is they offer peach juice everywhere. The stuff is deliciously refreshing after a long day of walking and shopping. This place is about a 5-10 minute cab ride from the Passeig de Gracia shopping area. TIP: The tapas/Pintxos here are larger than at most other tapas places in Barcelona, so plan accordingly. Four of us were stuffed after 5 tapas. Sooooo sooo good! Very tasty food and a nice local vibe, despite that the palace is becoming more popular amongst non-Barcelonians/tourists (which totally includes myself too). Officially, it is a Basque tavern, but I would say that the kitchen is a fusion of all local Spanish ingredients. This is the system: you can pick any of the cold pinxtos from the bar vitrine and is h warm ones that the staff walks around with, and at the end you pay per user toothpick. You can also pick from the menu, which has many (seasonal) tapas. The menu looks rather extensive, but all the dishes we ordered were solid. Pricing is very acceptable. I had sweetbreads on a potato mash, foie gras with a tomato purée, and countless pintxos (well, I guess they counted them as you pay per toothpick). My favorite pintxos were the burger topped with foie and the one with 3 kinds of fish. I also tried the bean and chorizo stew of my friend - very tasty. Overall: Make a reservation if you are going with a group. Again, an automatic +1 star for Maitea Taberna, for not being closed mid day. I had Maitea bookmarked due to it's super affordable prices and rave reviews. We came here after shopping at Chanel on Passeig de Gracia, though Maitea was a little out of the way and about a 15 minute walk on an unusually humid day. Hubby said to me, "This better be worth the long walk." And yes it was. Outside and once you walk in, it looks small. It appears to have only a couple tables at the front by the door and only bar seating at the front and to the sides, then you walk back and there's some tables, and I didn't even notice until I went to the bathroom, there's even more table seating way deeper in the back. Unless you have a big group, I highly recommend sitting at the bar. Why's that? Because the cold pinchos are there for you to look at and grab as you please. Each pincho (hot and cold) is around 1.70 Euro per pincho unless otherwise noted (tapas generally cost more) and their extensive menu also has special plates. It took us awhile to get a menu and for our orders taken. Side note, almost everything looks and sounds delicious. We took from the cold case the following pinchos: 1 - chorizo pincho, 2 smoked salmon wrapped around crab salad, and 1 crab salad topped with shrimp. He also quenched his thirst with a pint of Estrella Damm Limon. I loved it since it was light and had the perfect hint of lemon! I was thinking of ordering my own, but I'm such a lightweight. From the kitchen we ordered: 2 - foie gras stuffed mushroom, 2 breaded artichokes, 1 codfish croquette, 2 ham croquettes, 1 breaded pork loin stuffed with sobrasada & cheese, an order of patas bravas and one order of fried eggs txistorra (cured sausage). Favorite cold pincho - the smoked salmon with crab salad! The salmon could have stood on its own but with the addition of the light crab salad - it was amazing! The chorizo pincho had the right amount of spice and the crab salad with shrimp one was solid. I love button mushrooms and I love foie gras, so this simple pincho was a win win for us, not overly rich, and easily done in two bites. Ham croquette and codfish croquette - good, but standard. Breaded artichokes - breaded, fried, and delicious! Breaded pork loin stuffed with cheese - great combination of flavors. Patas bravas - Always awesome. And the much talked about dish - the french fries with fried eggs and cured Catalonian sausage. Is it drunk food? Yes. Is it unhealthy? Yes! But was it damn delicious? Hell yes! Crisp fries, salty sweet sausage and perfectly fried oozy yolk egg. Umm, I may just have to make my own version of this, after a night in of drinking. I started to get full with a few more pinchos left, so I ditched the bread. As others mentioned, service is friendly but can be slow. But hey, sometimes that's the European way, since you're supposed to enjoy your food and not rush through a meal. 4.5 stars rounded up. It can be a little out of the way, but definitely worth the walk. We were stuffed and had a great late lunch/early dinner (and were kept full for the rest of the night) for around 30 Euros. This is deservedly the top rated tapas bar in BCN on yelp. Food and atmosphere are 5 stars. I've gone at least 4 times on 2 separate trips to BCN. This place is off the beaten tourist path, located in a residential part of the Eixample neighborhood. With the acclaim it gets on Yelp and Trip Advisor, I'm surprised it's not more crowded with tourists. You walk in and are seized by the somewhat kitschy over the top Catalunyan decor. You wonder if you made a mistake but you take a few more steps and hear nothing but Spanish and Catalan. Okay, that's better. You'll see a huge array of cold and hot tapas laid out on the counter. Grab a stool at the counter and get ready to eat. I feel as though the bar counter or the stand-up area against the walls are the best places to eat. You're shoulder to shoulder with the other customers, most of whom are locals. It feels fun and lively. The back room is great too, but it doesn't have quite the same atmosphere. Back to the tapas. Pick whatever you like and load your plate up (but go slowly - I'll get to why in a moment). The tapas are speared with a toothpick, and they charge you at the end of your meal by how many toothpicks you've taken. Get a glass of vino tinto, take in your surroundings, and enjoy. Earlier I said to go slowly. Please listen to this advice, because you will see many, many more tapas coming out fresh from the kitchen. They have at least a few dozen varieties on the menu, and they just keep coming. You'll want to save yourself! My faves are the leek croquette and artichoke heart croquette. It's about time I finish reviewing the best tapas bar I visited on my summer trip to Spain. Yes, it's been a while, but I clearly remember how delicious the tapas were and how satisfied I was when I left. The bar is pretty big. If you get there early enough, you can grab one of the tables in the front or back of the restaurant. If you're into the cold tapas, you can grab them right from the cases at the bar. If you're in the mood for hot tapas, you can order them from a manu early on in the evening, or later at night they are passed around by servers. The tapas are very inexpensive. I believe they were €1.60 each. I couldn't believe how cheap and delicious our meal was. Definitely an amazing value! The menu is very extensive with lots of tempting options. Located in a bit more quiet and residential area of Barcelona, this place feels clearly more geared towards the locals. It's very laid-back and the service is friendly. Set-up is a mix of Pintxos (that can be picked from the counter and then the toothpicks are counted at the end when you pay) and tapas (ordered at the table) but with clear Basque influences. The food is reasonably priced, good wines (not huge selection) at affordable prices and not the least the quality of the food is good. Either come early or ensure you have reservations as it is very popular. Almost all the dishes are good but the meat dishes are among the best so not really the place for vegetarians. It is not innovative but really solid and good food so I often end up visiting at least once every time I'm in Barcelona. A great place that I stumbled across at the Eixample. The time I went was off peak and I was served by a charming waiter that quickly suggested things off the menu in fluent English and a sexy Spanish accent. For €25 I got an amazing tasty meal. read more

I've read so many great reviews about this place but sadly, I was very disappointed. We went mid-day and ordered hot tapas straight off the menu (rather than getting what was there along the bar ready to go). I had hoped it would be better since the items we requested were made to order. The bacon covered dates were overcooked, to the point that they actually taste burnt. The shrimp was the only semi-decent dish. Nothing else was memorable or worth noting. The only reason I give this place 2 stars is because the waiters were very nice. Unfortunately the food didn't cut it at all though. Maybe there was so much hype they don't feel the need to invest as much into their food now? Who knows :( read more
