When I'm drinking coffee at home, I mix it with a bit of chocolate soy milk. That's how I roll. The closest thing, coffee shop wise, is probably a mocha. Long ago I quit asking about mochas because 95 percent of the time I was told the chocolate isn't vegan. The latte became king. During my holiday visit to Central Pennsylvania my super thoughtful aunt gave me a gift card to Elementary Coffee. I decided to pay an afternoon visit to their location at the Broad Street Market. When I arrived I began perusing their menu. Lo and behold, right there on that big menu board in the sky, it said mocha...made with local vegan chocolate. Yessiree, Elementary Coffee was about to put the mocha back in vegan Joel H. Along with the mocha, I ordered a bag of their specialty roasted holiday beans to take back to Tampa with me. The mocha was spectacular. I sipped it at the small bar Elementary has beside their stand. It was smooth and featured just the right amount of chocolate, coffee and vegan milk. Their roasted beans are great too. Every morning I mix them with some chocolate soy milk and relive the vegan mocha experience from the Broad Street Market. Oh, prices you say? Pretty competitive to other coffee shops I've visited. My twenty dollar gift card covered the bag of beans and mocha with vegan milk (though the barista did waive off a few cents to make it work). I can't wait to return next time I'm in Pennsylvania. One more cool thing about this location is that in the other Broad Street Market building you can see Elementary's roasting area. I totally gawked for a few minutes at the bags and bags of beans and the large machine responsible for roasting them. read more

Let me start by saying that I'm a tea drinker, not a coffee drinker. I love Elementary! I usually get their Kingsolver Matcha latte but have tried a handful of other tea drinks and they're always great. I absolutely love that they use a matcha mix that has no added sugar in it. I didn't realize how hard that is to find. My boyfriend loves their coffee and has purchased a few of their bags of coffee to make at home. I personally enjoy visiting the store on North over the stand at the market. But that's just my personal preference. When we first discovered this place we were going about 4-5 times a week (or more)! We've cut back some but still enjoy this place as a great treat! I gladly take all out of town guests to Elementary for our coffee and tea needs! read more

Elementary Coffee is the coffee shop in the back building of the famous Broad Street Market (one of America's oldest markets). It's a medium sized coffee stand serving espresso, drip coffee, lattes, and all other coffee products. The line is usually long (proving it's popular), but it moves fast. The service isn't the most friendly compared to other stands in the market, but no biggie. The coffee is good and they are efficient at doing business. One cool thing they do is allow customers pay for a stranger's coffee for the day. When you walk up to the front, you'll see a small magnet board with tokens representing free coffee people purchased for you. Grab one if you're having a bad day. read more

Coffee was middle of the road for me. Definitely seems a bit overpriced. The staff seemed a little cold and unwelcoming, unfortunately. The last two contradicting reviews had me wondering about the Baphomet stuff. This had me curious, so I took a look. It seems like they do have a selection of those items for sale. There are other local coffee shops that I'd prefer taste and price wise. read more

One of the first reviews I saw was regarding this place of business being "Satan worshipers" this could not be further from the truth. This business is a pleasant and understanding coffee shop- which is everything I want. The vibes or the ambiance was calming and peaceful. It made me want to write a memoir or read "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein. The coffee is good and NOT Foldgers. I was greeted immediately with two friendly smiles. They acted quick and precise. I purchased a bag of beans- which my cashier offered to grind- I'd declined. I purchased one black coffee (no cream, yuck on that cream) and it's delicious. I'm assuming it's their house blend but I didn't pay the best attention. And a quiche and little cake thing. Which are also great! Im just a traveler passing through the city. So if I didn't like the place I would say "this coffee stunk" in this case I had such a genuine experience to spend my time to say this. If you're in town- go here :) read more

We stopped by the coffee shop in the market and was told to come to the coffee house to purchase loose tea. Wow! Happy we did. The two employees were awesome very knowledgeable and able to answer all questions we had on the loose tea for sale and Macha. I ordered the hopscotch and it was great. The salt that is ground as a topper hits your tongue and changes the flavor of the sip, only to have the next sip taste just a little different. We also ordered two chocolate chip cookies and they were outstanding! The Macha was tasty and we are going to try is again with almond milk. Went here at 10:45 am on a Friday. I ordered a cappuccino and my friend ordered a mocha. We both enjoyed our drinks. Service was casual and quick. There were 2 people waiting on drinks when we walked up, but we only waited a couple minutes for ours. Appreciate the signage & will return. read more

I stumbled upon Elementary Coffee at the Broad Street Market in Midtown recently. It seemed like a pretty good coffee stand, had a lot of equipment and other things that's usually point to a great spot for a good cup. I was in the mood for a cold brew, which is what I selected. Barista was pleasant and got me my drink quickly. There was no Splenda, or Equal. Only sugar. I have to watch my sugar intake. Not sure why this was the case, I mean those things aren't exactly expensive to stock, and they don't go bad. I should have looked before I purchased the cold brew. I decided to forgo any sweetener, and just took a splash of cream and I was on my way. The drink was ok, definitely wasn't true cold brew if I could tell. If my tastebuds didn't deceive, it was coffee brewed hot, then cooled down...it did not taste like cold brew (coffee steeped for 16+ hours in cold water) at all. I will give them another shot, but definitely will not be getting their cold brew! read more

Great little coffee spot in Broad Street Market. I arrived around 10:30 a.m. and there was no line. I ordered a "regular" coffee which was $2 for what looked like a small (I wasn't asked what size I wanted). You order at one end of the counter and pick-up at the other. They don't have, which is the only sweetener I like in my coffee--I had some in my car and was parked close so I went and got some. Service was ok, not overly friendly but not rude. There were 4 people behind the counter and they seemed rushed for some reason (at this point there was only one couple in line behind me). Walked by later and line was a lot longer! In the Broad street market. A wedge of millennial hipster goodness. I was at place next door on a Saturday...Line was insanely long. Finally tried it later. Excellent espresso. Full of flavor and good crema. Lots of variety. They let me take my demi-tase cup around while I shopped. Has cold brew and nitro with rotating tap. Owner was there with staff... Clearly a mix of hard earned knowledge, wry friendliness and a dash of Portland chic. Not overly solicitous, but that is not what you want. You should go. read more

Ugh, I want to like these guys but their attitude SUCKS. I live in Philly and travel to Harrisburg quite often to visit family and my first stop is to Broad Street Market. I've been to Elementary a handful of times, and I'll be frank, their attitudes suck. I understand being "cool", but lets stop chatting and give me my $6 latte in under 15 minutes. Ive read great reviews on this place so decided to give it a try during an impromptu stop at the market. The coffee smelled amazing so I couldn't help but be tempted to order some. I actually decided on a "Sweet one" which is a cold brew with maple syrup and whole milk in it. It sounded perfect for a hades hot kind of day. I was disappointed. I didnt love the flavor or taste of the coffee. The coffee actually reminded me of beer thats been in bourbon barrels, or it had a sort of craft beer flavor to it. Its not what I was expecting. I couldn't taste the maple flavor at all. It was smooth drinking but something was off on the taste for me. I would have gone back in the future and tried another coffee but the service was also lacking. When I ordered there was no greeting, just a blank stare and then not even a thank you when I picked up my drink. I seemed to be a bother (and they were not busy but it was the last hour of the day so maybe tired?). I guess I expected some friendliness but there was none which also left a sour taste in my mouth. read more

Every time I go to the Broad Street Market (which is almost every weekend), the very first thing I do is stop at Elementary. I love that they roast their own beans, and the employees are usually quite knowledgeable if you have a question about which of the coffees you might like the most. In the summer, I usually go with the sweet one, but sometimes mix it up with a nitro cold brew when it's available. In the winters, I'll usually do whatever the chemex of the day is, though I've also gotten the abacus a few times. The only bummer is that I prefer to go with a plant-based milk for my lattes, but I don't really care for their almond/cashew blend. So I just stick with regular milk, but if they ever added plain almond milk, I would love that. read more

I love their cold brew with the maple syrup I believe it is. Wish their was a way to get their coffee more often instead of relying on the hours of the market. That's my only issue. Coffee Nerd Sanctuary in Central PA. Andrea takes a test kitchen approach to her little shop in the Broad Street Market and it shows. The equipment is always being rearranged and upgraded, new single-origin roasts come out weekly, brew times and grind changes are made multiple times daily, and fresh coffee is brewing from open to close. Elementary is always iterating, always getting better. And they don't just nail the basics (as the name suggests). There's always something delightfully original on the menu.
