After Cinco de Mayo It was a rainy day here in Harrisburg, PA. I took a job in Lancaster, but first, I needed my coffee--I think I'm addicted to it now! The day before, I had a great cup from Passenger, but today I stopped by Little Amps in downtown Harrisburg before hitting the road. The atmosphere was excellent; it reminded me of home in LA with the records playing, dim lighting, and vintage decor everywhere. I felt a bit torn, like one coffee house wanted me to stay and the other wanted me to leave, so I decided to "break myself in half" and visit both. After all, two of me is better than one! I highly rate Little Amps for the scenery. The vintage look and the outdoor seating make you feel like you're in Manhattan or Paris, giving you the vibe of three places all in one. If you haven't been to any of these spots yet, save your money and just visit Little Amps to get that "all-in-one" experience. The staff is very inviting and they do offer bagels, though I have to be honest: they aren't quite as good as New York bagels. I know New York bagels inside and out, and they know me! Coffee shop vibes, exactly what you want for a coffee shop! (If you are reading this.. this is the coffee shop vibes you are loooking for in downtown Harrisburg)! What did we order: -2 cappuccinos (9/10) -cortado (10/10 -black coffee (10/10) I try a lot of black coffee all over the world and this one is one of the best.. not burnt and taste is very good! Now the service is phenomenal, they were super nice and explained that they used new single origin espresso for their Capps! So good! Good coffee and pastries, okay service Exploring the area, been to the over local coffee brewer and wanted to give this one a try. So long as you stick to the main roads, it's an easy enough walk. Front of the coffee roaster doesn't look like much. Looks more like an old bank than a coffe roaster place. Decor is about right for this type of place. Exposed brick, piping for rails. It's industrial chic for the everyman. Menu is limited. They do lattes and cortados but their fresh brewed option was an aeropress. I happen to love my aeropress at home, so I went that route. Coffee takes 5 minutes to make, I got some pastries to try and gave them a try. There seems to be a trend towards light roasts, to really amplify the fruity notes of coffee. Light roasts trade off the battle of bitter to the battle of acidity. Those bright fruity notes come with high acid, and the darker roasts mellow that out but get more bitter. It's easier to overcome bitter than it is to fight acidity. And this cup of Colombian was fruity but acidic. Not as sharp as other coffees I have tried, but you needed a pastry to help cut down the acid. It was a little bit more bitter than anticipated, but a packet of Splenda helped with that. The pastry was soft and the filling was good. There wasn't a lot of filling, but was told when I got it that the style of pastry was suppose to be that way. I forget the name. Nothing to really write home about. Friends usually visit, so thought I'd give it a try when I was in town. Service was pretty bland. Not friendly, just kind of there and not happy to be there. They just assumed I was taking it to go, not even one question. I actually did want to sit, but I didn't feel welcome after being given the little brown bag and basic white cup. Coffee was just your typical latte. They had decent flavors. The pasty was not good. Cold coffee bread. Wasn't even offered any kind of warming up. Just thrown in a bag with a little napkin. The inside was ok. No real ambiance to complain or comment about. Not very large, but not too crowded either. An Ode to the Frontline Workers of the Caffeinated Industry At this current juncture, that being 31 minutes away from the middle of the day and roughly another 30 until my adderall kicks in, I have reached an impasse. The work I have so determinedly shoved into the "no-no" corner of my brain has reared its ugly head and must be accomplished. When I take my adderall and I lock in I refer to this lovingly but more so cautiously as "going limitless mode," this of course being in reference to the 2011 smash hit starring Bradley Cooper where a handsome young white man does meth and essentially solves all the worlds problems. Truly a masterpiece. Anyways, half the time when I take my medication I end up searching my house for shiny pieces of things like a crow virgin trying to get laid or spend an hour convincing myself I have more knowledge within my mind's eye then Web MD. "If only there was a place with moderate to little noise, pleasant drinks, lovely service and a view of historic Harrisburg...only in Historic Harrisburg Pennsylvania will I ever be able to do any real work..." this is where "Little Amps Coffee Shop" located in Harrisburg Pennsylvania comes into play. At first glance, Little Amps might seem like your average coffee shop, its tiled floors, large windows and cozy seating feel reminiscent of a lost set piece from Gilmore Girls but I assure you...it is much more. Little Amps is a testament to the resilience of old world salon culture of yore. It is clear that Little Amps is a neighborhood touchstone for wild and like minded thinkers. I know this to be true based solely on my ventures in Google Maps street view and instagram tagged content. I like that they can put the purple stuff on the bottom of the drink and Make layers. It makes me clap my hands and giggle like a school girl. Anyways, back to the preservation of salon culture, the baristas at Amps (a colloquialism I have assigned to Little Amps) are simply an extension of such practices. They are workers, but they are also so much more--they are creatives seeking to expand their universes while attempting the difficult task of providing libations for customers. I recently saw a review labelling one of the barista's as a "negative Nancy" I don't know who Nancy is and I don't wish to know. What I can tell you, is that people in the service industry walk a difficult line between maintaining their expectations for themselves and the expectations that other people have for them. It is an exhausting job. At the end of the day, these kind folk are providing you goods and services that simply put, you would not be able to find anywhere else. Whether good or bad (I use those terms loosely,) the time spent at this wondrous coffee shop shall never be recreated--it is energy not to be destroyed but transformed. Little Amps' employees have the hearts of dreamers and the minds of a sparkle. If your experience at Little Amps is perhaps not what you expected I am reminded of a Carl Sagan quote, "...we are a way for the cosmos to know itself." Most of the time I don't really know what I mean and I'm not sure I do right now but fuck it we ball.... In a coffee shop, we are seeking an experience this causes a chain reaction for the employee who is then tasked with understanding their experience through the lens of your satisfaction. At least I know that it true for me. If I make a drink and someone does not like it, it alters my view of the shift and in turn myself. Then again I am really sensitive. Once I cried so hard because a butterfly landed on my dog that I got asthma. Oh god the adderall is kicking in. All in all, Little Amps is home. If Hooters is a place to release inhibitions, Little Amps is a place to discover them. It is a place to gather and discuss or perhaps say nothing at all should you so fancy it. Flaubert once said, "Be regular and orderly in your life, so that you may be violent and original in your work" and I think this rings very true in any good coffee shop environment but specifically Little Amps'. The floor is clean, the air smells good, the people are kind--all is in place for you to be your most free and true form. Uuuhhhhhmmmmaaazzzinnggg!! This little gem is a MUST TRY. I always get so excited when coffee shops make their vanilla syrup IN HOUSE. Everything was fab, from the customer service to the coffee. Line starts outside (for social distancing of course) 1 person at a time may come in and order their drinks. Masks mandatory! I got my go to Vanilla Ice Latte in a 16oz cup with 4 shots!! The perfect ratio to milk and expresso. Hubs enjoyed their Cold Brew as well. We aren't from Pennsylvania but once we go back to Harrisburg this will be my first stop! read more

Decided to try the State Street location today. We got a shot of espresso, a cold jar, and their regular drip coffee with a touch of oat milk and vanilla. (No almond milk). The espresso was consistent with the espresso that we tried the day before from the Green Street location ..(we didn't get the tonic water complimentary like we did at the green st location though.) The cold jar was delicious..the only thing is the sugar does sink to the bottom so definitely need a straw to drink that way you can keep stirring it. Other than that..it was amazing. And I'll just go ahead and leave a flex on the drip coffee. The vibes definitely differ. This location is retro..af. The merch and everything is the same..and they only have grab and go items at this location for your food options. LGBTQ+ friendly with the sticker in the window. I will say..if you have some anxiety issues like I do..maybe go to the green Street location. I was definitely feeling a little over stimulated here..noise and echo in the shop was high, music was semi loud, the door is very loud when it slams shut..so all of that happening at once was a lot. Several people are working on laptops and taking up a disproportionately large amount of space per person (e.g., one person spread out at a table intended for four). Stopped at this quaint shop twice while my friend ran in Harrisburg. Although the space is small, they entice many customers, and have relatively fast service. I got a house blend the day before, which had nice nutty tones and was piping hot (just the way I like coffee). My other friend got the iced coffee which she loved, yet she wished she asked for light ice. The second time I went, I got an almond milk latte. The barista did latte art right in front of me, which was a nice touch. Someone took my friend's latte, and the employee made her another right away and apologized. Overall, the service is great and it is a nice find in the middle of the city. While the coffee is pricey and the cups are small, it is worth it. Serious coffee and a nice vibe - that said, I didn't particularly care for the coffee latte I had. Probably a one-off, but notable for a coffee shop. It wasn't particularly smooth or delightful. I first found this place per a friends recommendation. It was love at first sight. The trendy, hipster, minimalistic atmosphere is cozy and inviting. The menu is basic & minimalist as well. However this highlights their exceptionally done drinks. There are not 800 different syrups or creams to mask and hide the coffee behind like Starbucks - just coffee as coffee should be. My go-to is their mocha. It's a perfect balance of chocolate and espresso and milk. There latte is also another favorite of mine. It's brewed perfectly and they don't allow the shot to burn so it's balanced and not just buried under a "latte" of milk. I enjoy coming here each week to pick up my CSA and will continue to give them my business. They are a local company who supports the community and other local business.
