This review is meant to help people with super curly hair (3c to 4a tightly curly/kinky "ethnic" hair LOL) make a salon decision, not necessarily to bash the salon or hair stylists even though I am very angry with my hair cut! I am very disappointed in my hair cut by Emily. First, they cut all hair wet, not dry. So, it is NOT a good salon to go to if you 1) Have very curly hair that shrinks up or that has different curl patterns like me, and 2) are looking to get a shape-up of that kind of curly hair. They also do not style curly hair in the wash and go way. So, if you thought you were going to leave with everything in place and looking cute, that might not happen. It definitely hasn't for me. I had been getting dry cuts but decided to try this place to get a wet cut for hair health reasons. I have been twice so far and have seen two different stylists. Elements was recommended to me by someone who had looser curly hair and her hair looked AMAZING. She recommended the Stylist Lauren. I saw Lauren (after a consult first!) and she did a decent job at maintaining my shape while giving me a trim (I requested that she BARELY cut any length). Then my next appointment I saw Emily because Lauren was not available. Emily is nice and also has somewhat curly hair. But it didn't work out. I came in with a cute shape and left looking like an uneven poodle! On the positive side, Emily was very patient and let me style my hair with product then dry it so she could see how it would lay. I asked for an all-over trim and some face-framers and I tried to convey that I wanted a stacked appearance for volume. She gave me the trim, wet. But it was all the same length like a bob - which does not look good on curly hair usually- then she started from so high up by my face for the face-framing pieces that these pieces now stick out of my pony tail if I wear one. I didn't even let her do the other side because it was just so short and not at all what I wanted. They really do not seem to understand that our hair is completely different wet than dry and laying naturally and they do not understand why curly haired people would do dry cuts. I am still so mad at this cut. It has no style at all and actually cut out the style (shape) I had. So, I am in a grow-it-out-so-I-can-re-make- the-shape-I-like-later setback. So, If you have very curly hair and are in a pinch for a wet trim to maintain hair health, maybe see Lauren. Because, they are knowledgeable about curly hair but I would not say they "do" our kind of tightly curly hair. read more

I judge a hair salon by the quality of their stylists. One can typically make a good assessment of what type of a job they are going to do by how they maintain themselves. A hair stylist with janky hair probably means your hair will walk out in the same manner. I'm really particular about my hair. REALLY. particular. When I found Elena here, I was beyond thrilled. Elena has since left - and when I look through the rest of the stylists to see who is left to choose from, you're sure to be sorely disappointed. Stylists with poorly fading 'colored' hair - horrendous roots, clearly box yellow and purple hair, with trashy, not trendy, haircuts. The stylists aren't afraid to (loudly) air their dirty laundry in front of customers, either, which creates an extremely uncomfortable situation. I really don't want to hear you yelling about how your husband is an ass, or what sort of shambles your life is in. I'm here to relax and unwind - and quite frankly, don't give a damn about your personal life. But, every time I was in, I heard several stylists and assistants continue to either loudly discuss their personal lives or act in a passive aggressive manner towards people they didn't like. The lack of professionalism in this salon is absurd. The quality of work is reflected in the remaining stylists - trash. Looking for a great salon in the McLean area? If you have dark hair, DO NOT get your hair colored here. They are not well trained or have enough experience to work with dark hair. I went there to get a subtle balayage; I was very excited with the cleaner products they offer. I ended up with brassy hair which looks terrible. I made some risky hair decisions and had a bad encounter with another hair salon. This left me with extremely short, damaged by perm, bleached and improperly colored hair. Completely natural which has never worked for me before. Here I have purchased a variety of products for myself and now for gifts and I have not been disappointed with anything I ever bought with one exception. She did a full color with cool highlights and warm lowlights and it looks FANTASTIC! It's super nature looking, you can't even tell I had 4 months of roots, the cuts perfect (no more split ends!) and even my sister is thinking of cheating on her hairstylist cause she loves it so much. I'm a guy, which some people may think makes me suspect in rating hair salons--but in my favor, I have had haircuts in beaucoup places in Georgetown, DC downtown, and throughout McLean (as well as in London, Paris, New York, Dallas and San Diego). A shampoo at ELEMENTS and a cut by Irving or his fantastic daughter is in a league with the best of the best anywhere. I prefer how I look and feel after a salon cut than after a barber has had at me. I've waited a few days to write my review after getting a full highlight and cut by Irving. I wanted to see what my hair would do after being styled and washed by myself. To start, the salon is beautiful and clean, very welcoming and accommodating. Irving spent a good amount of time sitting me down and discussing what I wanted and some of my hair "history". I have long, chemically-treated hair, and he was honest that I needed to cut a bit more than I wanted off to really make it healthy looking. I also mentioned that I had layers given to me about 3 years ago that I really hated and was still jaded by. We decided we'd discuss the cut further after the color was finished. The color is BEAUTIFUL! He worked very quickly, and it came out great. It is natural looking, he blended my roots, and put the highlights in a certain angle to keep my hair from looking streaky in a ponytail...it's obvious he is a very talented colorist. I would really, really recommend him for all my blonde sisters out there. Now to the cut...we discussed the options of length, and I agreed with him to go ahead and cut as much off the length as he saw fit. I have angles in the front, and we decided to keep them how they were. Then, he started doing this thing where he swooped my hair in front of my face and snipped it. I didn't really know what was going on, I thought he was just evening it out. After doing one side, he started telling me how these "layers" were going to be very subtle. Layers? We didn't talk about layers....what layers. Why am I getting layers? He dried my hair flat, which I usually wear naturally wavy, and it looked okay. I wasn't in love with the cut, but I could deal...I really loved the color. Fast forward to the next day...I take a shower and hold my breath as I let it dry naturally...the moment of truth. Womp womp...I have triangle face. The layers are awkward and boxy. They look choppy and the layers I spent 3 years growing out, are now back in full force. No worries, I'll just pull it back in my usual ballet bun for the next few month and deal with it....it's just hair...right? When I go to put it back in the ballet bun, all the pieces start to unravel and come out....the evil layers are back to haunt me...again. I know I don't look like I know a lot about hair or fashion, or personal grooming in general. I wear it long and wavy, and I like it that way...I just don't understand why stylists don't want to listen to their clients. I've had my hair for 25 years, I know what it does and I know what I want it to do... Truth be told, I'd definitely go back to Irving for color and I really recommend him to others as well, but I think I'll leave the cutting to the only hair stylist who seems to listen to me...my mom. I got married at the Tower Club and went to Elements to get my bridal hair done--along with my two bridesmaids, mother in law, and mom! They were so accommodating and got us all in at more or less the same time. We were there early Saturday and they made it really fun and relaxing for us. Everyone was friendly and knew their stuff, really putting me at ease. Irving did blowouts for the moms and did an awesome job. Jyll did my updo and she really knows her stuff. She even made a little pocket for the veil and it looked really nice when put in. My hair stayed even after I slept in it! Price-wise, they were super reasonable, probably on the lower end of event hair prices. If I lived closer to Elements, I'd go there for my more regular haircuts. read more

I originally had my hair cut by another stylist in the salon and wasn't happy with the experience or the cut. Finally found a new hair home at Elements! For years and years I'd an Anne Welsh devotee but had a few bad experiences there - combine that with a drive way across town and the need to book at least 2 months in advance and I was done. I then drifted, hair homeless, for far too long. A friend recommended Lauren at Elements and I am thrilled to report my hair is once again being properly looked after. One of the things I love and appreciate about Lauren is that there was no judgement about the fact that I color my own hair. During the hair homeless years I still needed to cover the grey, and actually found a box color surprisingly close to my natural. Lauren admitted the amazing color match, and said although she'd love the chance to color my hair, she was supportive of the box given how well it works on me. That she didn't push salon color was enough to make me love her. And then she cut my hair! At my initial appointment I went about 4-5 inches shorter. Lauren was great as talking me through the options and after she cut it, took the time to show me a couple different ways I could style it. I'm three cuts into the new style and still really happy with Lauren and the salon. She and I work well together because I tend to be someone who gives the professional (Lauren) a general idea of what I want and then I leave the details to her. So let me start by saying that I followed Jyll here from another salon in Courthouse. She is amazing! I hadn't had a haircut in 9 months or so (which for my naturally dry, long hair is terrible) so when I went in the first time we spent a considerable amount of time talking about my hair, my habits, what I wanted, etc. She wasn't pushy but would tell me her opinions. She's the expert, so that dynamic works well for me. Elements McLean is a lovely salon located in a sort of random conglomerate of businesses. My GPS actually did a wonderful job of finding it, so there wasn't a problem. I love their paraban-free products (a few of which I picked up the first time there) and will definitely be keeping those around. I first met Lauren Russo at another salon and I couldn't believe what this little sprite did with my head. As young as she was, she was the first stylist who EVER did exactly what I asked and then after a great cut, styled my hair so that I looked - well, look at my profile picture because that picture was taken right after Lauren cut and styled my hair. I couldn't believe it. It was gorgeous. After YEARS of nagging me, I finally let her do my color. I am a natural ginger...and a deep orange-y auburn...and VERY particular about my color. We sat down a few months before she did it and discussed what I liked, what I didn't, etc. We looked at swatches, conferred with Irving (her awesome father and co-owner of the shop), and we came up with a plan. She and Irving told me from the start that we may not hit it right from the start and we may have to play with it. I understood and trusted that they would be careful with it so that even if it wasn't exactly what I was aiming for, I wouldn't be embarrassed. The first time the color was shaded correctly, but too dark, so Lauren played with the formula for the next time. 6 weeks later, we tried it a little lighter and it was closer, but still not perfect. BUT...the third time was the charm. Lauren lightened it one more time and voila! It was ME again!! No more gray and auburn to match pictures of me throughout my life with my natural color. It really is perfect. And Lauren was sweet and patient with me throughout the entire process, explaining every step, and making sure I understood that her goal was to make it perfect and she did exactly that. When I first saw Lauren, my hair was a hot mess as far as its health, but over the years, both Lauren and Irving have counseled and advised and helped me pick the perfect Surface products for my hair and it is unbelievably healthy now. It is very fine, yet extremely curly. Sometimes I wear it curly; sometimes I blow it dry straight...either way, it rarely looks frizzy and wild, and always has great body and shine. Compared to what I was paying at a salon in Reston that left me feeling limp, and compared to what my friends pay elsewhere in the region, I find the cost of the service incredibly reasonable and worth every single penny. She is excellent at recommending new in style colors/cuts and every time it turns out fabulous! I dont know how she does it, this is why I have followed her for several years. I've been to several stylists. And I'm pretty easy-going about my hair. However, I've realized in recent months that I'm more unusual than I thought: I have VERY fine hair that can be worn very curly or quite straight. My old stylist was lovely but didn't inspire new cuts. And so I went searching on Yelp for "fine hair" and "McLean" and found Elements. My appointment with Lauren was awesome. She didn't make me feel stupid or weird. She explained that my hair type, while not "typical," also isn't beyond hope. And then she washed, cut, and dried my hair in a style (one that I've recreated every day since) that I love! She didn't push product nor did she self-promote; her cut spoke for itself. As soon as my appointment was finished, I drove to my husband's job to show it to him, because I was so excited! Ok first, let me explain that I'm picky. I have paid from $300-500 because the services I purchase include a full color, partial highlight, and a haircut. Sometimes I have the extra conditioning or protein fix. Sometimes not. When it comes to my hair, I want a salon that's hair oriented. I don't want to visit a multi-spa. If I wanted a day spa, I'd go to a day spa, right? So I've visited some of the most exclusive hair salons in DC and Arlington. All I can say is that my hair maintenance and expectations are pretty high when it comes to picking a salon. Many months ago, I had a moment of crazy and tried to henna / color my hair using naturally-derived products. You know trying to be more environmentally conscious and health aware - all that. Needless to say, it was a D.I.S.A.S.T.E.R. But that was probably all my fault. But I digress. That hair situation is what walked through the door when I first came to Elements. When I had my consultation here, it lasted for 30 minutes. I was like, WTF. I've never had a consult that took that long. In fact, Jyll (my absolute FAVE) told me that she couldn't take me in that day (even though I had an appointment) because she felt that my hair needed a lot of work. I was so bummed and I waited an agonizing two weeks (because she can get booked up) to see Jyll again. When my appointment came, I was pretty skeptical. All I thought was, "please God, just fix my hair." Three and half hours later, my hair was fabulously cut and fabulously colored and highlighted. I can't say I didn't spend quite a bit of money. But it was worth it. I went away happy..and relieved that I got my hair back. Since then, I've had many visits to Elements. (Of course, my visits now aren't 3.5 hours. lol!) I wanted to wait a few visits before I yelped my review. I wanted to see if they were consistent with my hair every time I visited. Currently, I am a devoted customer of Jyll and go to her every 6-7 weeks. She is an amazing colorist and knowledgeable. I almost don't want to talk about her because I don't want her to get booked up. lol. One important thing to note: you have to speak your mind about what you want out of your hair. Don't just sit there and take it - then give a lukewarm review. But that's just me. But here is the gist of Elements McClean: 1) Everyone is friendly. Irving, Lauren, and Jyll are very customer-oriented. I have never been disappointed with their customer service. They are very easy to work with when it comes to appointments. They also don't push products on you. 2) I love love love the boutique style salon. They limit their customers so the salon is never over-crowded or noisy when you go in for your appointment. The salon is limited to only three or four stylists at the salon. So that means that your service is personal and custom-fitted to your hair needs. 3) I have to give props to my Jyll. She is amazing and I absolutely recommend her. She is a FANTASTIC colorist. I have straight dark brown hair that she has transformed into a beautiful caramel-ish color with light highlights. 4) They use Surface-brand hair products. It's an amazing vegan product with certified organic "good stuff" as the ingredients. I have tried the Bassu shampoo/conditioner, Bassu oil, Trinity Protein Repair tonic and Bliss smoothing Cream. When I first came in for my consult, Jyll gave me loads of samples to use. So be sure to ask for some. So I am now a Surface hair product user. (I also use Avalon Organics when I don't have time to go there for a refill.) Surface has replaced my previous assortment of Aveda, Phyto, and Oscar Blandi products. 5) If you buy the 32 oz shampoo/conditioner the first time, you get 20% off if you bring back your containers for a refill instead of buying a whole new one. read more

I was very disappointed, my pocketbook is very unhappy, and will not be returning, or spending money on a nice salon for a long time. Environment of the Salon: BAD: The receptionist evidently has left unexpectedly, they were training someone on what seemed her first day when I was there, so reception was slow. The head stylist guy kind of just stared at me multiple times, never smiled, was weird. My stylist was dressed very inappropriately - a cheap cotton tank top with her cleavage showing and up in my face while doing the cut, and a studded belt an emo punk teen would wear. I didn't feel like any of the staff members were professional or nice, except the shampoo girl. No one but her seemed particularly welcoming. The head stylist guy came over to talk to my stylist in the middle of her cut. Didn't acknowledge me at all, just interrupted. Never saw him smile. He was texting on his phone, sitting in his styling chair when I left. Also, the entire time the stylist kept talking about how other stylists are just machines and only do one cut for everyone and she could see how bad my previous haircut was. She just was laying it on really thick trying to make everyone else seem stupid and make herself seem awesome. Also, she even said something about how there were a lot of salons in the area but they were still there after two years because they are such a great place. How about you let me decide that? GOOD: Shampoo girl was nice. Interior was decorated nicely. Product-Pushing: BAD: The entire damn time she talked about the products. It was absolutely exhausting. I was worn out by the time I left because I was so drained from feeling like I had to politely listen to this crap about how great this all-natural stuff is and how she doesn't do products but she loves this stuff and how she swears they aren't salespeople she just believes in the product so much. When I checked out, she even grabbed all the products off the shelf, put them in front of me at check out, and gave me a list of the things she used on me. It was absolutely overwhelming. And the prices were insane. 25-65 a bottle. No thank you. The Cut: MEH: It was ok. Not terrible but not great. Just ok. No one has noticed a difference. It doesn't look any different than the regular cheap place I have been going to. The Price: BAD: They have no prices listed publicly in the salon. They list $65 dollars on their website for a shampoo, cut, and dry, but I was charged $75 with no explanation. I was so ready to get out at that point that I just paid it - I did not want to argue with the brand-new receptionist and I was so depressed that I was being gouged like this, I just didn't have the will to fight. With tip (I won't not tip unless someone is just flat out awful and rude and terrible, as I'm never sure how much of a cut people actually make from their salon), that comes out to $85. What an absolute waste. I am heartbroken at having wasted all this money on a cut I could have gotten elsewhere for less than half the price. I do not want to return to have them "fix it" because I was so turned off by the attitude of this place where it was all about how much better they were than everyone else, and how these products are magic. read more

Oh, Irving... where have you been my whole life? After moving here from San Francisco, I was on the hunt for what I was used to getting... a cut and color that I was *usually* satisfied with. What did I really want? I wanted someone to be honest with me. Wait, what? A hair stylist to tell me I look like crap and need some major help in a major way? Why on earth would I want the truth? I mean, after all, I've been existing in my happy little reverse-mullett world for so long and I've paid so much for it. Why change now? I'm so used to "what would you like to see with your hair?" Um, I don't know. I want something that is flattering and that is cool and that doesn't require me to wait for the moon and the stars to align in order for me to get it even half-way close to what it looked like when the stylist did it. And besides... we both know that there is no way you're going to make me look like the girl in the photo that I brought in. I'd need to shave about 18 years, 100 lbs and about 60 IQ points. I digress. Soo when I first met with Irving and he asked what I wanted, I told him. I said I wanted him to be honest with me. He smiled his knowing little smile and told me he would always be honest with me...brutally honest. I couldn't help but snicker, as in my experience if you are paying someone, they usually just tell you what you want to hear. Or what will keep you paying them money. But alas, my snicker was mis-snickered. After about a half hour of talking about me, my hair resume and my vision for my hair, he took me to his station. True to his word, he told me I was wrong about the color I wanted. I told him okay...he was the professional... do the voodoo that he was to do. We fell into an easy conversation and after he quickly applied his choice of color, he put me under the "color hat" thingy that sets your color and then washed my hair. We were back at his station and he began to cut. I closed my eyes as we spoke...again, an easy conversation. As he picked up different products and explained why he was using it, what it was going to do and how to apply it, I saw his vision materialize in the mirror. By the time he was done, I literally looked like a new woman...thank GOD! The cut was spectacular and so, so flattering. The color was even better. My eyes were complemented and my skin was glowing. I could not stop smiling. After setting my next appointment, I drove home to the next test. I quietly walked up the stairs to find my husband waiting for me in the kitchen. He lit up the moment he saw me and declared Irving a genius. The final test was the next day when I was going to attempt to do my hair my own dang self. I washed. I conditioned. I combed and slathered in my new product. While it was not *exactly* as Irving did it, it was pretty darn close. And it looked just as good as it grew out. I've had my second session with Irving and it was just as amazing. I've made my next two appointments through their on line portal. Personally, I find the pricing quite reasonable, but again, I just moved here from San Francisco. That said, I'd pay twice as much for the level of honesty and skill Irving brings to the equation. read more

Had an amazing cut and color with Elena. Highly recommend this great salon as well as Elena. I wanted my hair brought back to my natural color which I've tried to do countless times with no success. Just tried Elements for the first time! Elena was so sweet and did such a great job listening to what I wanted. She was so easy to trust when I was super nervous to switch stylists (I've been with the same stylist before I moved for 10 years)! I love my hair and the magic she did to it!! The only reason for four stars was it was a bit more pricey then my past hair place! read more

Words cannot express how wonderful Elements is. I was highly impressed with the level of communication, detail, thoughtful questions and education I was provided by Elena. The education I received about my curly hair was off the charts! No stylist has ever provided this much information. The type of curl- she even drew an example and proceeded to show me how it should be cut. We are now on our journey to correct all the mistakes that were made previously.
