We were visiting the Museum of Surrey and wanted to stop by a nearby place for brunch, so we found Elena's Country Kitchen. From the outside it looked like a quaint family run spot. Upon enterring I was struck by how much different the remodel interior was. Now it looked like a fancy hipster joint. Thankfully the restaurant had one single high chair for our little one. It looked like it was inherited from the previous restaurant, but served it's purpose well. Space was small and narrow. Another restaurant where you order at the counter and your food will be brought to your table. Husband had the ultimate loaded breakfast (bowl) while I chose the English Breakfast and our tot happily munched away in a grilled cheese sandwich. Disclaimer: I like kitsch. I like greasy spoons with dated furniture and giant photographic wall murals circa 1980. I like mismatched plates and grumpy-faced restaurant owners. And of course, I like a good breakfast and - even more - I like great deals! And I got all of the above during our rainy-day V-Day breakfast at Elena's. To me, part of the charm of a family-owned joint is that you almost feel like part of the family when you go there. But here, you also get great food. We shared their breakfast special ($6.99 Canadian...which is practically free considering the exchange right now!) and a side of a pancake ($1.50, a steal for a pancake that took over an entire dinner plate). The coffee was strong and bottomless, and the server (the aforementioned owner's son-in-law) was friendly. There are only a few tables in the place, one of which was occupied by a group of regulars who have been breakfasting (is that a word?) at Elena's for years. They also have a beautiful collection of European (Russian?) china which you have to peer into the kitchen to see - it's gorgeous! And their lunch menu (pierogi's, borscht...) looked insanely appetizing, so we'll be back for sure. read more

I went looking for a place for brunch today and saw Alana' Country Kitchen on my phone. We went for it and found this tiny joint in Cloverdale. We weren't sure when we walked in, as the decor hasn't changed for a decade or so. Saw an order being delivered and decided to stay. My eggs were amazing, obviously fresh from the farm, and the hash browns were home made and delicious. My wife had a tasty ham and cheese omelette. Bread needs an upgrade. Brown or White. We went to trip plan and sit for breakfast, ordered a coffee and told the man working we were going to have breakfast after coffee. 45 minutes went by and he never checked on us just sat on his phone. I asked for hot water and they charged me $3.00; the price for a small mug of coffee. My friend had the all day breakfast special which did not look good or taste good either. This restaurant doesn't deserve the one star but there's no option for 0 stars. We went for lunch today and when we arrived the place was empty and now I know why. The one employee we saw was very rude and unfriendly. We ordered a sandwich , coffee and chocolate milk. When the coffee came it was cold and it had obviously been sitting there for some time. When he brought the milk it was overflowing and dripping everywhere. He left it on the table and grabbed a dirty looking mop from the bathroom to sloppily mop some of it up. Pretty much everything is made from scratch. I ended up ordering a plate of perogies for breakfast just because I wanted something made from scratch while my date ate the usually breakfast routine. Who says I could not be odd person eating that at 10am? Perogies definitely tasted homemade with a large helping of sweet onions on top. I would have preferred pan fried ones instead but this was pretty good for what it was. There was a generous amount of sour cream on the side and the two bacon strips was crispy and not greasy. I love my breakfast so I'm always looking for that elusive 5 Star café diner that knows how to make a great old fashion Eggs hash browns and meat. When I read the reviews and saw Eleni's also made Ukranian food I figured what could be better than eggs and perogies. Tried the breakfast special with a side order of 3 perogies- not impressed. Pan fries were greasy soft and undercooked, perogies were doughy and bland. I come here quite often for a good ole fashioned diner style breakfast. Don't let the reticence of the owner/waiter fool you. He is funny in a quiet Ukrainian way. I went to this restaurant with a group of friends and the man who operates this place initially refused to serve me because of my guide dog. When he saw me he said no dogs and when I explained that it was a guide dog he said he didn't care. I calmly explained that it was against the law in BC to refuse a guide or service dog, and I showed him my ID from the guide dog school, and he rudely replied that he knew all of the laws and if we stayed he wouldn't serve me simple as that. It was only when I asked if he would still refuse me if I called the police, when after telling me to go ahead and call them he didn't care, there was a brief pause, and then he shifted gears and said that his wife said it was ok as she is the boss. We did end up staying for lunch, and although the food was ok, the service was mediocre at best. Oh, and while we ate, my guide dog rested quietly under my chair, and no one would have known he was there. I will not support this business moving forward, as the owner clearly has no regard for the laws of this province even though he said he knows them all, and he chooses to be rude, confrontational and disrespectful to potential customers. If the owner is reading this review, I strongly encourage you to familiarize yourself with the British Columbia Guide and Service Dog Act and drop the ableist attitude. read more

This is like your granny's kitchen in those years after she stops throwing out the yellow pages and and flyers. The whole place has a "like it or leave" vibe which we thought could be cool until we realized "leave" was more what they had in mind. Our old guy server seemed ticked off we had come in. As he was scary I polished the murky silverware he dropped on the table with my napkin. A replacement request may have pushed him over the edge. Asking to substitute ham for mushrooms was risky enough. We asked for water to go with our eggs bennies and he grunted. We thought that meant yes. We were wrong. My husband and I've been going to this restaurant for many years. It's all homemade food, made with love. Some people might think the owners are grumpy, but the more you go there the more you enjoy their personalities. The food there is amazing.I would recommend this restaurant to anybody. Went in here with bf and tried to order the simplest thing (all day breakfast special) and owner/server gave us the most uncomfortable stare that prolonged for a full 1 minute. Stumbled across this place while hitting all the antique stores in the area. The place looks like it is straight out of 1985 but don't be deceived. They have the best perogies I have EVER had! Great little restaurant! Went in yesterday with a friend. I had the pancakes & bacon, my friend had the breakfast sandwich.It was 3 pancakes and 2 strips of bacon. Breakfast sandwich came with home style hash browns. Bacon was nice and crispy as I'd requested and the pancakes were fluffy and tender but held the syrup well. Hash browns were delicious! I don't hand out two-star reviews lightly. To be fair, this may not have been a representative visit - it was just for coffee after all - but I won't be back to find out for sure. I wanted a coffee before work. This place always has people in it, and outside there is a sign on the window saying "Coffee or tea to go", something like that. So, I went in. And was charged $2 for a medium drip coffee in a styrofoam cup. Alright, so, not very good value for not very good (lukewarm) coffee, but the part that put me off was... I noticed the sign by the counter saying "cash only", again not a super big deal, but the fellow taking my money was upset that I didn't have anything smaller than a $10 to pay with. WTH? Evidently it is unreasonable to expect places that only accept cash to be able to give change from a small bill? Jeez. Looks cute and inviting from the outside but inside, it looked run down, un kept, and felt cold. There was a man blowing his nose while reading the paper who I thought was a customer and as it turns out, he worked there. We tried to turn a blind eye to the nose blowing hoping that he would wash his hands but he didn't and he also didn't really care that we were sitting there waiting to order. What's good about this restaurant is worth going to. Like the previous poster, the perogies are a sinful treat. Amazing. The first pillowy soft perogie hit my mouth and I knew I was going to have to fight the temptation to have these every day. These are NOT your frozen in the bag ho-hum perogies. They are marvelous. The breakfast is lovely as well. You have to see the eggs to believe them. Seriously. Right from the farm, apparently, because I asked. Went here for breakfast with a friend. Got 1 special ($6.99) and a tea ($2.00). Nothing was wrong with the food but the gentleman/owner had rude service. Turns out my debit statement showed he charged me ($19.83) when it should have only been $9.83. An extra $10! Now i had already left a cash tip for him at the til. So i gave him a call and explained the overcharge. He defensively explained that in 15 years he would never make a mistake like that, I kindly offered to bring in the statement and show him the overcharge if he would refund it. He refused. If I could give this a minus, I would. Father is European, so after his haircut, I took him across the street to eat. A room not much bigger than my living room, with old fashioned vinyl tablecloths on small wooden furniture. Lots of dollar store knick knack and plastic plants. Eh. The sandwich board said "homemade cabbage rolls and perogies". Okay. There was one large man sitting in the corner, arms crossed, angry stare. um... let's sit near the door. I could hear a woman talking behind the wooden divider, so we picked up the typewriter menu in the holder. Father wanted cabbage rolls, I wanted a grilled ham and cheese with fries. We sat for ten minutes when the big guy stomped over, looking at his note pad, "Vhat do you vant?" I ordered and before I could ask for beverages, he stomped away. Talking behind the screen in foreign language. He stomps back with ONE very small napkin for me, and one small napkin and a knife/fork for my Dad. I asked if we could have water, stomp stomp. Tap running. Stomp stomp. One glass, half full, nothing for my father. I pushed the water to my Dad and took my water bottle out of my purse. Waiting, more speaking behind screen. He comes out and sits back in his perch. More staring. She comes out, smiles, says something to the man, and leaves. He goes into the back to bring out our food, served without garnish on 1970's Corelle. After dropping our plates, he returned to his corner, arms crossed, to continue staring at us. Dad got three small cabbage rolls, without the cabbage. If put together, you may have something the size of a slice of bread. Small, dry, and sprinkled with a half slice of tomato, ounce of sour cream served in a paper cup. My grilled ham and cheese was a slice of plastic cheese and two extra thin sliced of Oscar Mayer square ham. A handful of ripple potato chips. Our meals didn't take up half the plate. Dad said the meat was okay, but only ate one of the stubby-cigar sized roll. The cheese and ham was so inexpensive that I think I used up my salt quota for the year. Dad picked at the chips while we waited for our ride, as it was minus two with the windchill and quite warm in the cafe. We chatted while Dad slowly ate but ten minutes later, the man came over, dropped a small cash register piece of paper, told us he wanted to leave so we had to go. Excuse me? They were to be open for at least an hour more. Nope. Out. Our bill came to $18.40 and I dropped $20 on the plate. We stood in shock, in the freezing wind, as he began sweeping the floor. He closed the door, locked it but the sign continued to say open. I haven't had such a bad dining experience since... I don't even know if I've ever had one this bad. Don't go. Save your money. Cook for yourself. Go to McDonalds on a bad day. They are ALL better options than Elena's cafe in Cloverdale, BC. read more
