But I am happy to report back I finished my half belgium waffle here with ice cream and strawberries minus the cray cray aftermath and sugar overload. It was so refreshing to have a dessert that wasn't smothered in cream, chocolate sauce and syrup but was instead light, fluffy and fresh. For $8 I received a generous serving of vanilla ice cream and fresh, juicy strawberries with enough chocolate sauce to ensure the waffle wasn't too dry or bland. The half serving was perfect for a morning tea sized snack. I'm really disappointed this place doesn't open later for weeknight desserts and that is the only reason for a loss of star. But it is definitely worth trying on a weekend or early Friday night after dinner at Cos or drinks at Udaberri across the road.

So once I finally worked out where this place was, I was really very desperate for a milkshake and a break. OMFG. What a great place! The menu, while not huge, is packed full of extremely appetizing foods and drinks. The chocolate milkshake I had might well be the best I ever experience. It's hard to describe how good it is. I did get a couple of the handmade chocolates to try, and like the milkshake, they were delicious. Service here is excellent. Really friendly. The shop itself is a converted house, and it's beautiful. It really is. It's surprisingly large. If you look at it from the street, you'll have no idea how many people can fit into this palace of chocolatey pleasure. I'm another who would give this place ten stars. Or more.

The waffle was fresh and warm with a sauce that, to me, tasted like christmas - kind of cinnamony, spicy, with a warmth to it if that explains it! Either way it was a damn good waffle!!! The shop is on the small side, you cam watch them make waffles from pretty much any seat and it smells great!! They is seating available indoor and some outdoor at the back! All nicely decorated. One is smoked salmon, the other bacon and egg with tomato. I had the latter - it was pretty good, the bacon was cooked differently. Not as crispy as I usually have it but still good. The waffles, on the other hand - uh-may-zing! The cinnamon waffle by itself? I reckon I could have it for breakfast every morning. My boned and butterflied trout with green beans took longer to eat and every morsel was a joy. The trout was nicely charcoal-seared on the skin side and very lightly cooked on top. The tastes and textures sang together in a light buttery sauce from the beans which were not too firm but just right. It was best trout I have ever had and I am still purring with pleasure.

We were patronised by the staff, who then proceeded to complain because we closed the door on a freezing day. Our waffles were soggy with soft serve ice-cream (which does NOT work with waffles) and squished in a horrible take away container with plastic cutlery. The coffees were horribly made, burnt milk and extremely expensive for the 100mls that we actually got in the cup. After our great experiences over the years at your original store, with real plates, cutlery and cups, we were sorely disappointed. We will not be going to Waffle King again.

But realistically, we're all here for one thing. Those thin, perfectly cooked, simply designed gallettes (or crepes if you're sweet tooth got the better of you). The best news is that their gallettes are made using Buckwheat flour which is gluten, sugar, egg and milk free (perfect for those intolerant people out there). My favourite is the oeuf with goats cheese and mushrooms or the one with spinach. Le Carpe Diem means "seize the day" in latin but I am curious as to why this place doesn't have a french name like "le petite déjeuner crepey crepe" or something? If anyone knows why please share!
