Bible Challenge for the kids and the Lenten Devotional book each year are really impressive to me, that our small church could never have kept going. But it really still feels like a small church just with this great campus in a great neighborhood. I'm a little nerdy I guess, but there's just been a tremendous number of thoughtful Methodists that have attended and preached at this church. The church has gotten really top clergy talent the years I've been here who have gone on to become bishops or general conference delegates, or were conference leadership or district superintendents. I've loved book club and the Disciple I class (year long Bible study class). I think its been a wonderful place to grow in faith and raise our children in.

It's 2012 and I still love this place…read more There are no perfect churches and there are no perfect people - but Vinings Lake is as good as it gets. Each week, we provide food for families in need through the Save It Forward program. Many members serve in Haiti and we regularly support missions in Haiti. We support efforts to stop sex trafficking. I've served alongside my fellow church members in a hot warehouse sorting food and passing it out to those in need. We've worked side-by-side to build food pantries. We have service days regularly where we go out into the community and serve. The service-orientation at Vinings Lake is like no church I've ever been to. This church gives A LOT. The children's church is awesome. Community groups, where you can really connect with others, are great. We have service times at 9:30 AM, 11 AM and 6 PM on Sundays at the Cooper Lake location in Mableton. If you are really late to the 9:30 AM or if you have a taste for a bagel (like I do sometimes), go to the Twisted Taco service at 10 AM. I recently discovered our 10 AM service at Twisted Taco on Camp Highland Road in Smyrna. I heart it - you can come, grab a free cup of coffee and a bagel and watch the service live - it's piped in from the Mableton location. If you don't like traditional church - this church truly does things differently. Come visit!

That's one of the reasons I decided to visit after seeing the church on TikTok and YouTube. What I struggled with was that the church describes itself as welcoming and inclusive, but that wasn't my experience. I wasn't ignored, but I also didn't feel genuinely welcomed or connected. I filled out a visitor card and never received any follow-up or information about getting involved. From what I could find, the main way to connect is through serving. While I understand that serving is an important part of church life, I couldn't find a young adults group or other opportunities to build relationships outside of volunteering. As a first-time visitor, the experience felt more like inclusion was something the church talked about than something I experienced. I sincerely hope that isn't the intention, but it was how my visit felt. This was one of the more disappointing church experiences I've had. People often criticize megachurches for feeling impersonal, but smaller churches should also evaluate whether visitors truly experience the welcome they say they offer.

I guess you would call it "evangelical" but politics are explicitly banned (I say that because many churches seem to preach politics). The music is modern and the preaching is "expository" i.e. Bible-based. They do treat the Bible seriously as the Word of God. Right now we do not have anyone in the church who calls himself "pastor" -- the church is elder-led, I guess you'd say. If you have something to say, or want to do something, people will listen to you! Drop-ins are welcomed -- just show up at 10:30 any Sunday when we have a pre-service breakfast right in the sanctuary. Or come at 11 if you don't want to talk to anyone, lol. Dress is casual. This is a small church on purpose. If we reach 100 members, the church constitution requires us to split. So if you have never tried a small church, you might come see what it's about. There are quite a few smaller children (under 12) and we do have a program for them downstairs, although I think they call it Children's Church instead of Sunday School. I love this church btw.

On our first visit Todd, the pastor there, invited us to meet him and his wife for coffee later that week. And I don't recall a single person there who didn't welcome us and/or come over to chat a bit - though this is a smaller church (bout 30 to 40 people), so I guess that's not too unrealistic. My wife and I tried many churches around the midtown area, all of which seemed to focus on image. We never met the same person twice, never had any face time with anyone who called themselves a pastor. One church we attended for over 6 months and I can still say the same. We both plan to attend Midtown Church again. It doesn't have the image of some of the other churches in town, but it has the community I've always looked for in a church.
