Is it the most high-end museum? No. But it is informative and has a lot of very interesting items in the collection. I need to come back when the weather is warmer and you're able to look inside the pioneer village cabins. For me, the pioneer village area is the highlight of this museum. They have acquired various historic buildings from around the region and transported them to the museum grounds, including a prison, several family cabins, a blacksmith shop, a barber shop, and more. This place is a bit provincial, yes, but it's been created and maintained by local people who take pride in the history of their region. I greatly enjoyed it.

LUCKILY, some good…read morecitizens of Walla Walla prevented this from happening, by saving the Kirkman House Museum and restoring it as a museum, to tell the story of the Kirkman Family. We visited the Kirkman House Museum, which was such a memorable part of our time in Walla Walla. Located downtown, it's an italianate-style, brick house that was built in the late 1800's, during when Walla Walla was the biggest city in the northwest! Designed and built by William Kirkman, he came to Walla Walla to make his fortune from the agricultural industry, becoming a well-established businessman in Walla Walla. The house later became an apartment building where they added on to it on the backside and another entrance, and then it was proposed to be demolished into a parking lot. Now, it serves as a museum, showcasing the Kirkman Family's lifestyle and contribution to Walla Walla, as well as the Adam West Library! In fact, that's how most of the museum gets visitors, for they come here to see Batman's corridors. Yes, the Batman/Adam West Library is really cool, especially because the bookcase slides and becomes a hidden wall where Batman slides down the pole! And it's awesome that the city of Walla Walla is so proud to have famous Walla Walla native, Adam West as their local hero, with memorabilia of his time in Batman and in Family Guy, in addition to his younger days at Lakeside School and so forth. (They even have an Adam West Day every year in town where everyone dresses up as Batman!) But I implore you to check out the other parts of the house, which I find more interesting. You get a real sense of what Walla Walla was like back in the day, based off the lifestyle of the Kirkman Family. There's even a room that shows old maps and pictures of what the city used to look like in the late 1800's when it was the most prosperous city in the area. The rooms are all decorated to that time period, and you can see some original furnishings that the family owned like the piano, photographs, decorative figurines, etc... Plus, Fanny Ann's room is haunted, so there's that. I hope for everyone to visit and support the Kirkman House Museum, which is a wonderful attraction site of this town. The non-profit that runs the museum is all volunteer-based. Admission is $7 and they do host fun events, like murder mystery dinners and Victorian tea time. A true charm to Walla Walla!

This historic site serves as a reminder to a part of American history that is pretty much…read moreoverlooked: the clashes between settlers and the Native Americans who already were inhabiting the land. Physician Marcus Whitman and Narcissa Whitman established the Whitman Mission in Cayuse (Native American) territory. The Cayuse initially welcomed the Whitmans, but as the increasing numbers of settlers passing by on Oregon Trail worried the Cayuse, tensions grew. It all came to a head when a measles outbreak in November 1847 killed half the local Cayuse. The settlers were also affected, but fared better. The Cayuse took it to mean that the Whitmans were responsible for the deaths of the Cayuse, as to them, the doctor was the cause of death. The Whitmans and 11 other people were killed, and others taken hostage, sparking the Cayuse War. It ended when five Cayuse men were turned in for being the perpetrators (without clear evidence) and hanged. The visitor's center is built on the site of the mission. The center has a gift shop, a movie, and a small museum to explain the events that occurred here. Outside, there is a trail that brings you to a memorial obelisk, and meanders past the foundations of the mission buildings.

The lady curator was very helpful and accommodating all my questions. I also picked up some historical books researched and written by locals. Wonderful glimpse into the Walla Walla boom years of the 1880s. I can't wait to go back and continue my research.

Adjoining the main building are a carriage house, and turn of the century barn which illustrate what life on a 19th century farm was like. Most of the furnishings within the home are the original furniture pieces from when the home was built in 1892. Downstairs are a sumptuous living and dining room with adjoining kitchen and bath - upstairs a drawing room or study, sewing/spinning room, master bedroom, and children's room. Each room contains artifacts from the time period such as 19th century clothing, serving dishes, children's toys, looms and spinning wheels, weapons, books, and various other furniture pieces and articles of daily living from the time period. A tour of this museum will give one an incredible view into the past, a walk back into time.

The tour was about 1.3 hours long, and you'll need to climb and descend stairs and squeeze into small spaces. If any of that sounds like a challenge, it might not be the right fit for you. Our tour guide was "BRAD," and he was amazing! He's practically "been there, done that." He grew up exploring these tunnels with his friends and has all sorts of stories to share. You'll learn a lot about the history and some simple sayings that will make you laugh and give you a deeper understanding. For example, there's a "Shoot" of whiskey! From the outside, you have no idea how huge this place is, and we only get to see a small part. Don't miss out if you get the chance. We'd definitely go back and bring a friend who hasn't seen it before.

The tour was led by Matt and is meant for mature adults who don't get upset or offended by certain language. It was such a fun tour. They had the museum open for the Pioneer Fall Festival which is the third Sunday of September every year. This house is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. I visited during the Fall Festival, the house was open for tours with cute elderly ladies in each room offering up details and descriptions of each room. The house and property are well maintained. The interior house is filled with lovely historic memorabilia. As you enter the home the room to the left had an ornate chandelier, fancy stove and flowery original carpet. There was also a nice lady playing the piano which was a nice touch. A bedroom upstairs contained the original Bruce Family bedroom set. Other rooms had items donated by local families. The museum has both indoor and outdoor exhibits with a gift shop as well. The outdoor exhibits include a homestead cabin and one room school house, a Union Pacific caboose, Windmill, and barn ,A military exhibit located in the 1914 Signal house .The indoor exhibits celebrate the history of the country, with a permanent Oregon Trail exhibit, railroad information, newspaper/post office, and several changing exhibits. Umatilla Gold is an interactive exhibit that takes you on an educational tour through the history of the wheat industry. They are a non-profit, and are run largely on donations, grants, and volunteers.The staff was super friendly and talked a bunch about the museum ,its history and also suggested places and things to do around town . Very reasonably priced at $5 for an Adult, this place is good for spending a couple fun -informative hours.
