When I decided I wanted to get our photos done professionally I searched all around our area to find the best service and the best price. It took lots of energy to convince my boyfriend to participate and split the cost because to him "anyone can take a photo." I ended up convincing him to go with Ambient because the reviews were so good and Alex had a "mother's day sale" where we would be able to have an hour photo shoot including a package of photos and a copy of purchased photos on a disc for $530 (tax included). For us that is a lot of money and we expected we would get wonderful family photos as well as newborn photos of our baby girl. The photo shoot itself seemed to go well. Alex was friendly and the space was nice. He has a beautiful studio and awesome outdoor venue. However beyond that it was a nightmare. Our photos arrived weeks late and the prints were incorrect. The photos were printed in the wrong sizes, damaged in the mail AND our disc of the purchased photos was missing. I reached out to Alex who responded quickly but without a resolution. Days passed and I reached out again. When I still had yet to receive a response my fiance reached out to Alex and finally we got a response. Alex then provided us with copies of the damaged photos in the correct print, a disc of all the photos from the photo shoot and he upgraded our canvas picture. All of that sounded great EXCEPT when we received the disc of photos NONE of them were photo shopped so my daughters baby acne was in full swing and I have had to search for someone to edit them for me. Alex never photo shopped my hair tie off my wrist (I didn't even realize it was on my wrist until Alex told me halfway through the photo shoot). In all of the photos of my daughter on her own her eye crossed and the angles are strange. I was behind my daughter during the time Alex took those photos so I had no idea that her eye had crossed nor that she was at weird angles. We only got a couple prints in color, the rest were all black and white. My hair tie is in almost every photo. There are only a couple pictures I remotely like at all and none I am in love with. The canvas picture took almost 3 months to arrive and Alex does not develop his own photos. My daughter is absolutely beautiful and Alex didn't capture her beauty for us. He didn't capture anything and he didn't even bother putting his logo on our pictures because I am certain he knows he did shoddy work. It was a good experience gone horribly wrong and I will NEVER pay for pictures professionally again. Waste of $530. It is 6 months later and I am still upset about it. Our pictures were done 5/30/17 and just writing this brings back all my anger and frustration. I wish we had demanded a refund. I have now found someone willing to photo shop the photos and correct my daughters baby acne and remove my hair tie but there is no way to fix her cross eye or the crappy photos he took that day and I am not sure I will ever be able to look at any of the photos without getting upset.

I brought my wife a few weeks later to meet Alex and look at his work, and we decided right on the spot to book a session with our kids. We were nervous about how the kids would do during the photo shoot. They are not even 4 and 2 years old yet, and attention spans are limited and so is patience usually! But Alex's calm demeanor and intuitive sense on how to keep kids engaged resulted in incredible photographs and more importantly, great memories. Would recommend to everyone!

You're not going to get cheesy posed pics of your wedding; you'll get classic timepieces that take you back to the day. And you'll have fun. We really had so much fun with them on our wedding day, and with Daria for our engagement photo session too. Really, when you think about it, you spend more time with your photographer than any other single person (besides your significant other) on your day, so you better like them. She calmed me, made me laugh, and really helped make the day. And it's a big plus to have the two of them- Daria and her equally wonderful fun husband Andy- so you can have double the coverage. And our pictures... I'm still getting comments about how great and unique they are. I LOVE that they do a slideshow of the event- putting the pics to music just really tells the story of the day. The 2 negatives that made me hesitate between 4 and 5 stars are price and timing. The packages are very pricey (more than what the Knot tells you to alot for a photographer budget), and watch out for additional costs which I think are a little unfair to not include within all packages (digital negatives, slideshows- it's best to ask exactly what ISN'T included in your package to have it spelled out). Although, I have to say, they were worth every single last penny. My other negative comment -'timing'-is that they are not always perfectly organized and responsive/quick with turnaround. It's been 6+ months since our wedding and we haven't gotten instructions on our wedding album, despite multiple requests, nor do we have our digital negatives. But overall I feel it's better to wait for awesome pics than to have ones you're not so happy with right away. Overall, really great, fun photographers that will give you the wedding pictures you dream of. and ps- even if you have no intentions of ever getting married, check out Daria's blog on her site. Totally great way to waste time (especially if you love Vermont like I do!!)

Matthew Payeur (pronounced, "pire" - as in M. Payeur, get it?! ...don't worry, it took me a while…read moretoo...) is the man behind the lens at Empire Imaging. A humble but goofy master of the flash, Payeur works mostly from a studio within his home. A home, which you soon come to realize, was purchased with the secondary function of living, and the primary function of taking incredible photos - "I bought it because it had amazing windows - lots of light. You always have to have windows that face the north, because then you will have amazing light all the time..." Dedication, surely. In my life I've had the opportunity to work with several photographers. I'm not the next Gisele, mind you, but I'm an artist and I love the medium of photography, though I have lacked any particular skill in it myself. As a result, I have stalked my share of talent, admiring work, commenting and giving praise - secretly adoring the kind of art that has always eluded my own skill set. This is how I happened upon Empire Imaging. And this is how I happened to find myself in his studio, preparing to partake in a "Transformations" shoot. A project that takes an average person and transforms them into an alter ego... into - a hippie, a rockstar... and in my case - a flame throwing superhero. My biggest fear was not knowing how to pose. Okay, I lie. My biggest fear was being axe murdered, because I was driving three hours from my home into the middle of nowhere, when the last real sign of life was in the form of a T.J. Maxx seen from the highway half an hour before. All of which, of course, was dispelled within the first 2.5 seconds of jolly greetings, big smiles and small talk normalcy, followed by walking into an amazing studio with fabulous equipment and awards lining the wall. My second biggest fear was not knowing how to pose. What do I do with my head? Where do I put my arms?!? Don't let me make the duck face!!!! In the end, I didn't make the duck face. I've never had a photographer take so much time giving exact direction on where to move and how to pose. Which anyone who has ever done a photoshoot knows, not knowing what to do with yourself makes it the most awkward thing ever. But not here. From the angle of my chin, to the posture in my shoulders to, in one instance, the exact positioning of each finger - no detail escaped his eye, and it was obvious that this isn't just a job, or even an interest - it's his life's passion. And you know what? I drove six hours in one day, just to work with him. Three hours down from Maine, and three hours back. And I'd do it again in a heartbeat. If you live closer than I do, you'd be crazy not to make the trek. As a professional hairstylist and makeup artist, I've collaborated with many photographers for fashion shots, runways, weddings, etc... and my only regret about Empire Imaging is that the distance means that I will probably not get a chance to do much industry work with him, and that's a straight up professional tragedy.

I bought my sister the Watch Me Grow series of photos for her first child's baby shower a few years…read moreago. She LOVED the gift and enjoyed the sessions. The end product was a gorgeous matted set with four of the photos. I thought the price was about $80 but looking at the website, it appears to be $39! Not sure if that changed at some point but this is a wonderful deal.... IF you just want that product. Additional prints were quite pricey so they were only able to buy a few. The quality was great, though, and the sessions were a blast. If you are looking for a great shower gift, something like this is a very nice idea different than the usual 'diaper genie'!
