The location is super cool, the people (kids and adults) are so nice and really work as a team, and the head professor, Professor Alex, is amazing at what he does. He engages with everyone, praises the students when they nail a technique and is always on top of his classes, making sure everyone is on the same page and understands what they need to do. My daughter has been in martial arts since she was 3 (she's going to be 9 this year), and it was extremely important to me to find an instructor who knew how to really handle a kids class. I've seen coaches in other gyms just ramble off techniques and not really pay attention to if the kids are grasping it. I'm happy to see that Professor Alex is on top of it. He makes sure the kids are doing techniques CORRECTLY and confidently. Her confidence has skyrocketed and she's made friends with all the kids in her class. The adults class is also spectacular. PMA has posted several videos to social media of the classes being held. Almost every clip had an instructor with a mask on but pulled down to their chin. Several kids as well as parents were in the studio during this time. As a nurse I contacted the owner with this concern and was met with my membership being cancelled. Nothing about educating the staff was stated only well you can cancell your membership if you are unhappy. My daughter is my #1 concern and although she will miss it I have to keep her safety my #1 goal.

I was very disappointed when I visited the east Nashville location for this school. I emailed about…read morewing chun classes, because their site says that they offer (and actually says "specializes") in wing chun. I studied wing tsun/chun in the past under sihing Keith Fain, so I'm very familiar with it. I was told that there was a wing chun class on Saturdays, which turned out to be non-existent. I was also told that there was an "adult" class that consisted on ages 13 and up, which actually consisted of mostly kids under the age of 13...yet there was a class right before that one for ages 7-12 supposedly. Besides the classes being dominated by kids and only having the slightest hint of wing chun concepts that I could see, there was little to no discipline. The kids played more than anything and the instructor did nothing to keep them in line, and worst of all, at least for me, was the fact that he had two "black sash" students that I would of ranked as beginners with a little experience. They were completely unskilled. (I'm assuming that's akin to a black belt in Karate. My previous classes in Chinese martial arts, other than the wing tsun which had its own unique system of ranking, followed the more traditional family styled system of ranking, not colored belts or sashes, which is more of a Japanese and American thing. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not dogging it. It is an easier way of discerning rank.) I really mean no disrespect, but it was really sad. These kids think they are learning kung fu and they actually believe they are good at it too. It's good that they are having fun and are confident, but they are terrible. I totally blame the instructor for this! He'll stand there and watch a student just totally butcher a move, then say to him/her "good job!" and go on. It's not their fault at all. I'm 32 now and have been training since the age of 14. I've trained in a hand full of schools and visited several, and this is by far one of the worst I've ever seen :(

If you have a kid, they did really well with instilling discipline and respect. "yes sir" and "no sir" were common. The instructor (who wasn't the school owner the night I visited) was very knowledgeable and skilled. It was obvious he'd had quite a bit of training in kung fu. Cons: The "school" is actually in a church gymnasium. When doing warmups and other exercises, (push ups, etc), you're on this VERY hard surface, barefoot, and no give whatsoever. This is eventually going to kill your knees and other joints when you're doing moves that require quick jumping and stomps. The instructor, though knowledgeable, was kind of... up on himself. Every time he would have you do some hard, esoteric move, he would explain how his instructors would have drilled this into you, and made you do it over, and over, and over again. Sorry, this isn't China. People don't devote their lives to practicing kung fu. On top of it, I got the feeling that the guy really didn't care that I'd had any other martial arts training, treating me like I was a complete newbie, who didn't know what a "proper" punch was. You're not really learning kung fu-- the program, when you sign on, teaches you "traditional" karate, punches, kicks, etc, which you learn to spar with, and then as you progress, you apparently learn more actual kung fu. Classes of mixed ages: Adults practice with children. Having experienced both mixed and seperate classes in other settings, it's WAY obvious that children and adults have different needs to cater to, and having both children and adults together, in my opinion, is a HUGE distraction. If you want a cheap martial arts class, go for it. I only visited one class, but I could tell this school was not for me. "Hard" traditional training methods don't benefit you as much when you could incorporate isometric exercises that are far safer. Standing in one pose for an extended period of time doesn't teach you how to fight. I came out of the class aching, not in a good way, but with a tweaked back from these exercises. I couldn't see myself going back for what amounted to more punishment.

My husband explained our son had special needs in advance and was assured they would be accommodating and had worked with kids who had special needs before. Nope! The male teacher yelled at him and embarrassed him in front of the whole dojo. Said if he couldn't listen he couldn't be taught in his class. If you are not equipped to handle special needs students, please don't tell parents to bring their children to be shamed in front of other people. It's already hard enough to find classes for special needs kids as it is. My 7 year old son cried all the way home. Then when we called Tony Lewis stated he wasn't a psychiatrist and was very rude. This is appalling and we are hurt and shocked by his behavior.
