I've been meaning to try out Salt & Straw when I found out they were opening a location on the UWS on the corner of 77th and Amsterdam. I visited on a weekday afternoon and was warmly welcomed by staff member, Jessie. She was incredibly knowledgeable about all the flavors and even helped check the allergen guide for me as well. I was able to sample a variety of flavors including their limited edition flavors like strawberry tres leches and rhubarb crumble w/ toasted anise. I think Salt & Straw did an amazing job with their strawberry flavors, and I ended up getting a cone with a scoop of strawberry balsamic w/ black pepper and strawberry and coconut water sherbet. Overall, I really enjoyed Salt & Straw, and would highly recommend it to those who enjoy more inventive and creative compound flavors. This was such a great treat especially now that the weather has gotten hotter! For this Yelp Elite Week event, Elites plus their guest got to try a couple of scoop of ice cream from Salt and Straw. The check-in was easy and smooth and when we went on the last day at 3pm, there was no line. After trying many samples, I ordered a Jasmine Milk Tea with Almond and a Double Vanilla scoop on a cone. This was so good! They were both very creamy and not too overpoweringly sweet. My friend got the Jasmine and Rhubarb Crumble with Toasted Anise on a cone. She said they were both delicious. I always find the flavors at Salt and Straw to be so interesting and unique. And the staff at the UWS location are very welcoming and generous with the samples, which I really appreciate. One of my favorite ice cream spots in the city because of the seasonal monthly flavors. This time around, it was the May Flowers series and we tried to taste test all of them. First time having Salt & Straw ice cream. Thanks to Katey, Yelp and Salt & Straw, from me and my husband! Mentioned I was on the list and we were offered tastings. Not an overwhelming amount of flavors but theirs is not typical. Got a taste each only then we were ready. Was glad split-flavors were allowed so I got the limited edition flavors: Rhubarb crumble with toasted anise and Jasmine milk tea almond stracciatella - did like the Jasmine. I would get their Hazelnut cookies and cream again - am not usually into C and C but theirs is different, nutty. Each staff member focused on a group of customers until the order is done. Very rarely am I able to find delicious dairy free ice cream. Sherbets are fine but I want to enjoy a creamy treat in a cone. What I happily found is my new favorite ice cream spot. I stopped in at around 7pm and there was already a line forming. I was happy to see some dairy free options but I would have loved to order the strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper or the double vanilla. I settled on the freckled mint chocolate chip (v) without trying it first. At an ice cream parlor you're either the patron that's afraid of commitment, asking for samples of everything thrice...or you're the first card in a tarot deck, upright. I tried to attend the Salt & Straw Yelp events in the past but didn't make it past the waitlist until now. I've been following Salt & Straw on IG before they opened in NYC. Love their stories and great reputation. They have a wonderful corner location on the UWS, with line stanchions outside in preparation for their busiest hours. Arrived around 3:20pm Thursday afternoon... lucked out with the timing, there were only 2 people ahead of me and one employee handling sample tastings/orders/payment. I was happy to have a few minutes before it was my turn to study all the fab flavor options. My turn... I was so excited that they generously encourage you to try as many flavors as you want ("ONLY" tried about 6, and possibly would have done more?!? LOL)... chocolate babka with hazelnut fudge, coffee & love nuts, pistachio & ricotta cannoli, salted malted chocolate chip cookie dough, strawberry balsamic with black pepper. Decision time (tough choice, I loved them all): single, split scoop, chocolate babka, coffee & love nuts. Huge shout out to David who was a big factor in making this a 5 star experience!! I received such a friendly welcome from him when it was my turn, and that was before I told him it was my first Salt & Straw visit and that I was part of the Yelp Elite event. Love his energy, kindness and flawless explanation of each flavor. He shared one of his favorites with me, Coffee & Love Nuts and I totally agree with him (I could also eat a bag of those Love Nuts). I ate my cup of ice cream in the store and listened to him with the line of customers that began pouring in after me (same level of friendliness and service). This place was so nice . We got in and the staff was very friendly and let us try a few flavors. I really enjoyed the honey lavender flavor while my husband got the strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper. The lavender was nice and creamy. I went on the first day of the Elite Week :D I couldn't convince anyone to take a work break with me, but it's okay. I'm usually shy when it comes to trying samples, but the staff here were so friendly and encouraged me to try several of their favorite flavors. It also helped being the only one in the store at that time, so I got to try 5 flavors! It's also nice they use metal spoons for sampling rather than disposables. I ended up going with the "monthly menu series" Strawberry Tres Leches. It was just so good - sweet and strong on the strawberry flavor with hints of tres leches bits in between. The Jasmine milk tea almond stracciatella was also really good. More aromatic given the jasmine and had more subtle flavor. Here, the employee helping us asked if there were any flavors we wanted to try and was patiently waiting for us to decide. This is what we tried: Monthly Menu Series/Limited Edition - Jasmine Milk Tea Almond Stracciatella - Strawberry Tres Leches: was a bit sweet for me. - Rhubarb Crumble with Toasted Anise: the flavor wasn't for me. - Saffron Milk with Wildflower Honey: was strong. - Coffee Chamomile Sherbet: if you like coffee, this is definitely for you. Classic Flavors: - Arbequina Olive Oil: wasn't bad - Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper: I thought this was an interesting combination but it was surprisingly too sweet for me. The steel spoon disposal is a hole on the side of the wall. This keeps the counter clear and more accessible for employees. I visited their website and I was in awe of the unique flavors that I want to try everything. Staff was great and I got to taste the flavors I wanted, but I got it down to two one of me and the other for the hubby or the child lol to go. I got the seasonal flavor of saffron and Wild honey, which was something I have never had on a cone and I enjoyed it very much without making a mess. I got a scoop of the pistachio, ricotta and canoli ice cream. This flavor used a pork gelatin as a binder. This to-go ice cream melted during the travel home so it's in the freezer getting solidified so it can be consumed. I'd definitely go back to purchase a pint of the ice cream. It definitely delivered: when I got my scoop of ice cream, the generous staff took down my name and was all smiles. I tried their limited ice cream flavor: Jasmine Milk Tea Almond Stracciatella! Were the flavors for AAPI month? They also had Saffron Milk, Coffee Chamomile... Lots of interesting flavors. The regular menu looked delicious too. The ice cream flavors, as always, are innovative and delicious. I got the seasonal rhubarb flavor, which tasted like a nice rhubarb pie and was very creamy. I'm always so impressed with how friendly the servers are. I've come to the UWS location multiple times, and always had just such great service. I was able to try all the seasonal flavors, the last chance ones, and some of the constant flavors. I came Wednesday at 7 PM and there were a couple people on line ahead of me, but at most waited 15 minutes. Also the scoops were generously large. It's located right on the corner of 77th and Amsterdam Ave. it smells delicious the minute you walk in. Store is also very clean. Staff is so friendly and encourage you to try multiple flavors with their mini metal spoons. I tried 4-jasmine milk tea, strawberry tres leches, saffron milk with wild flower honey, and pistachio & ricotta cannoli. I went with the strawberry tres leches and pistachio & ricotta cannoli on a waffle cone. Both flavors were phenomenal. The waffle cone was awesome and tastes freshly made. The staff here is so nice and kind. I wish i remembered her name but i will be coming back because of her and that fabulous ice cream. Thank you Katey, Yelp, and Salt & Straw for a great time! As soon as you walk in, it smells soooo good from the staff making the waffle cones. There are many flavors to choose from and it is recommended that you try them to see what you like. I ended up trying 4 chocolate flavors and chose the Chocolate Gooey Brownie. It had a rich dark chocolate flavor with bits of brownie bites mixed in. If you love chocolate, this is definitely the way to go! My friend opted for the Strawberry Tres Leches. She really loves Strawberry flavored things and also Tres Leches cake so the two of them together made her really happy. FYI, the vegan flavors are made with coconut and have a very strong coconut taste if that's your thing. Staff were very nice and even explained flavor profiles to help you decide. There's plenty of standing space to eat inside or you can sit right outside the restaurant on the red benches. We decided to walk around towards Columbus circle as it was a nice day out. Central Park is also closely and was an option. Overall, we had a nice time and I'll definitely be coming back to Salt & Straw to try their other unique flavors! What a great experience! I've had salt & straw back in the bay area, and was just as impressed to find that the quality and consistency is just as amazing at this location in ny! I sampled a couple flavors and ended up getting the chocolate gooey brownie. The chocolate was so rich and the brownie bits add extra texture to each bite. I brought my mom and she ended up choosing the pistachio & ricotta cannoli. Such a unique flavor! The pistachio isnt super overpowering but strong enough to taste as the base with hints of the ricotta cannoli. Theres some standing tables and a few seats outside! The staff were extremely nice and patient as i was translating the flavors to my mom. I do find salt & straw on the sweeter side, but it's always a nice sweet treat esp on a hot day. My friend and I came by Thursday with high expectations they were exceeded! The location isn't large though on a cool spring day thankfully not packed. A wall of freezers with pints is the first thing you see when you enter, with a small merch section to the left and ice cream counter to the right. Along the windows is some standing room with slim bars on which you can stand while eating your ice cream if you so choose. Most people take their cones to go. At 7:30pm there were about 7-8 people in line and we only waited five minutes before getting up to the front. Their staff here is wonderful! Everyone is friendly and helpful in explaining what each flavor was, how the Yelp perk worked, being very patient while my friend tried seven flavors (her first time here) and I tried four. I love that they have a strong variety of seasonal flavors, so many good options! Of the flavors I tried: - Saffron milk with honey: you could really taste the saffron which I really liked, the honey was a good balance and not as sweet as I assumed it would be, maybe because it was cold. - jasmine milk tea stracciatella: I couldn't really taste the jasmine in this, maybe bc I tried the saffron flavor first. As a milk with chocolate chip ice cream it didn't disappoint though. - Fran's gold bar seasonal flavor: soooo good! If you know Fran's they are a classic chocolatier originating from the Seattle region, and their chocolate bars are epic! Super triple hearts that they did this collab with S&S which is another PNW icon!!! The ice cream was on the sweeter side bc of the caramel though I was licking my lips and apparently making slightly obscene sounds that made my friend pause mid-convo and say"I'll give you a minute with your ice cream". Lol. - vegan hazelnut Oreo crunch with a coconut base: I wondered while I was eating this what the citrusy slightly tart flavor was coming from that I was tasting. I stood on line and told Sal, very friendly employee, that I was checking in for the Yelp event. He said "No, worries.. let me know what flavors you would love to sample" I said no need I want a scoop of Double Fold Vanilla and Chocolate Babka with Hazelnut Fudge ( oy the Jewish guilt, lol)." He asked if I wanted cone or cup, and separate scoops or together. I stated separate and a cup. He then checked off my name. This was fun. I got to experience some really good flavors of ice cream. This also had some great vegan options. My guest and I enjoyed the friendly customer service and the opportunity to experience such a wonderful event. I want to thank Salt&Straw and Katey G from the Yelp team for the opportunity to be part of this amazing event. This was a quick and easy experience! There were some creative flavors to choose from & I'm glad there were a few people on line ahead of me so I could make my mind up! The man behind the counter became much more upbeat and friendly with me when I mentioned that I was there for the Yelp event than he was with the other customers before me. I ordered a cone with Chocolate Babka with Hazelnut Swirl for the ice cream flavor. I should have gotten a cup because it started to melt fairly quickly so I had to almost inhale it, but I thought it was good! read more

Had the loveliest experience at this ice cream shop. I brought my friend and it was both our first time, so one of the servers took her time to explain the set up, concept behind some of the more intriguing flavors and let us try as many samples as we wanted. I really enjoyed a lot of the flavors especially the ones that I wasn't expecting like the strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper (you couldn't taste the pepper at all! So delicious!!) and the saffron milk with honey. Salt & Straw create some of the most unique ice cream flavors I've ever seen. I'm looking forward to going back in the summer and trying their limited edition flavors. They also have pints and other goodies for sale, perfect for a late night treat at home. read more

Finally we have a salt and straw in NY. I tried the ice cream years ago in Seattle and have been dreaming about it since. They have seasonal flavors as well as NY based flavors which were all delicious. You can try all of them if you want before you decide which I love. Super friendly service with large scoops! I tried several flavors--peanut butter caramel brittle (vegan--you could taste the coconut), pistachio ricotta cannoli (a bit too almond extract-y for me, I realized), fran's almond gold bar, jasmine milk tea almond stracciatella--and they were all pretty good. I found it very hard to choose! I thought it was a good level of sweetness, but I should've tried some of the more savory flavors! The cone itself was gigantic. There wasn't much of a line right after work on a Friday, and my friend and I took our cones to a nearby park, since the benches outside the shop were full. No real seating inside. I'm so glad I got to finally try Salt & Straw in NYC! Ever since moving from the west coast, I really missed Salt & Straw and all their amazing flavors! This time I tried the Salted, Malted, Chocolate Chip cookie dough and it was incredible! The employees are so helpful and let you sample their flavors! The perfect treat to end the week! I've been wanting to try this since it's been popping up in nyc. Thank you Katey and Salt Straw for the opportunity! Came on wed. Night and the line was out the door and it was not even warm outside so I thought this must be something! Probably waited about 1/2 hr. on line, it's nice they encourage you to try things but it seemed to slow down things. I tried the goey brownie and chocolate babka, wasn't hit with a rich chocolate flavor and either brownie or babka that I went with cookie dough which seemed safe. I enjoyed the waffle cone and its hints of almost a subtle cinnamon. The cookie dough was good but I wouldn't say it's as creamy as van leeuween and didn't get big pieces of cookie dough. The staff is friendly and helpful. read more
