The Inn of the Governors is located just a few very walkable blocks from the Plaza, the New Mexico state capitol building, and downtown's main cultural and historic sites. What really sets this property apart from other local options are the stellar hospitality and thoughtful amenities. Every morning begins with a free cooked-to-order breakfast in the hotel's on-site restaurant from 630am til 1030am featuring traditional favorites like eggs and pancakes as well as excellent New Mexican specialties like huevos rancheros. On-site parking is free -- a valuable perk in downtown Santa Fe where parking can be $30-50/night -- and the exceptionally friendly staff hosts a daily happy hour from 4pm to 5pm with complimentary sherry, hot herbal tea, and New Mexico's traditional biscochito cookies. Our room's traditional New Mexican decor and furnishings were starting to show their age, but they were clean and well maintained. My room featured a large LED TV with plenty of content, a reasonable workspace with easy-to-connect WiFI, and individual HVAC controls that made it easy to manage the temperature during the night. The room was also equipped with a small refrigerator as well as a single-serve coffee maker with four pods. The bathroom had plenty of space on the vanity for my personal hygiene items. If you're deciding on room options, the 'deluxe' rooms in the main building are well worth considering - especially during cooler weather - because they feature Kiva-style wood-burning fireplaces for guests' use. Given the age of the property, this hotel would typically earn a 3- or 4-star rating, but everything else about our experience easily warrants my rounding up to a 5-star rating. PRO TIP: Book directly through the hotel's website. Guests who book directly (rather than through an online travel agent -- offering the same nightly rates) receive a $15 per night credit for their on-site restaurant, Del Charro. Unlike typical hotel dining, Del Charro's prices are very reasonable with entrees ranging from $9 to $20 and they don't hit guests with an automatic 20-25% service charge.

One star because your only as good as your word. No one took accountability for their actions even when they were confronted by their coworker. The rooms are incredibly unique in this building that is centuries old and uniquely decorated from the owners world travels but keeping with the Santa Fe feel. The included breakfasts were amazing with incredible service. They also have included town car service within 3 miles so almost all of the local restaurants and shopping/art galleries within distance. It was so easy to get dropped off and picked up for meals and shopping which we did many times. We chose the Drury Plaza Hotel because we wanted to be within easy walking distance of the historic Plaza while still receiving genuine value. Happy Hour includes drinks and enough substantial food that it can easily serve as dinner after a full day of sightseeing, adding meaningful value to the stay. The location could not have been better. Each morning, I walked to the Plaza before my husband woke up, and we could hear the bells from the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. We also took several day trips to nearby areas, and the Drury was an ideal home base for everything we wanted to explore. We stayed for 4 nights and 5 days. Several smaller buildings seem to have been added over the (many) years to the main building seen on most photos of the property. - Interior: Like going back 100 years. Things were fixed, of course...especially in public spaces...but you might feel as if you're in a living museum. - Our Room (Witter Byner): Large and rambling. More than enough room for 2 people plus a balcony overlooking the front of the property. Very comfortable. I could live there for a month if we didn't mind going up and down 15 stairs to the main floor. One interesting aspect: The bathroom. It was very nice and fully equipped, but separate from our room and down 5 stairs. That wasn't a problem during the day, but a few nights were an adventure - Breakfast: Unreal. Everything was homemade with great taste. The buffet portion had sliced fruit, granola, juices, pastries and yogurt. The hosts and kitchen staff had 3-5 entrees available each day. I rarely tried those since I filled up on the buffet, but my wife ate one every day and only had good things to say. During our most recent stay, our vehicle was one of at least three that were broken into with many very large/heavy items stolen overnight while parked in the hotel's paid parking lot. The lack of security measures, whether cameras, patrols, or staff presence, was disappointing and left us feeling unsupported after the incident. What was even more frustrating was management's response. When the answer to multiple vehicle break-ins is as we were told by the GM - there's nothing we can do and that cameras don't deter theft or help identify thieves - it's time for us to stay somewhere else. We understand that crime can happen anywhere, but guests paying for parking should reasonably expect the property to take security seriously and make an effort to protect them. What makes this especially difficult is that we've always loved this property. The hotel has a historic charm, a great location that makes it easy to explore Santa Fe on foot, and while the rooms aren't luxury accommodations, they always felt comfortable and familiar - like a home away from home. Through the years, the staff has consistently been friendly and welcoming. That's what makes this review so disappointing to write. What was once a 5-star experience for our family has dropped to about a 3-star experience because we no longer feel confident that our vehicle and belongings are safe while staying here.
