We had planned to dine at a different restaurant but it was closed when we arrived and it was a little after 9pm already, so we walked into Ellis Gourmet Burger. Service was pretty minimal, in fact they only brought us one burger when we ordered 2 and we had to wait for the second one. Both my husband and I had the Blue Cheese Monster prepared medium. It had blue cheese (lots of it-yum!!), caramelized onions, rocket, and arugula. The bun was substantial enough to hold up to this monstrosity of a burger. We were famished, though, so we both ate the whole thing. We also split a side of frites, which were crisp and hot. Disappointed after all of the build-up. This burger restaurant makes burgers that are perfectly ok - neither fast food nor the best burger in Brussels as claimed. Exactly average. I guess people rave about them as there's limited choice downtown for this kind of food. Nice location and setting. Service quite slow. Quality of the meat is fine, chips...meh. Great place to try grab a good burger on the Place St Katherine / city center. I have to say, I am not at all vegetarian (looove a good peace of meat) but decided to try one for the first time. Experience I will try again for sure! I was truly amazed by their red pepper / soya burger, it was delicious!! Portions were more than fine and service was great. Great burgers and love the American concept (feeling at home as an American myself). Fish or veggie burgers are nice. Fries are ordered separately, but should be ordered nonetheless. Normally, I don't like coleslaw, but theirs is actually quite good! Milkshakes and desserts are great. Atmosphere is good and service also nice! So if I pay the price of a good burger I want to be asked the question. And not rely on the mood of the cook of the day. Second, the staff... the staff could be friendly. We were recommended to come here by a local. I have to say that compared to American gourmet burgers, Ellis was fairly dissappointing. I was expecting a lot more but that is the price to pay for wanting American specialy food in Belgium. The burgers did not have that much flavor and there was nothing other than the meat to help the situation. The fries were good but not good enough to make up for the meat. Credit to our server though, he was really nice and made our stay very pleasant. Overall, I would not recommend coming here if you are a tourist from USA. I finally got to Ellis Burger. I had heard all about it, what great big delicious burgers they had and such. Well, they had burgers! I got a Bombay one which was actually chicken with some Indian spices and it was pretty good. Well, it was ok. Nothing special. My girlfriend had a lamb one, which I forgot what it was called. It was also good. I admit, I didn't eat a proper hamburger, meaning made of beef, but they didn't look much different than what we had. I'm not saying they're not good burgers but really nothing special. I'm from the USA and I know my burgers and these were burgers, but nothing like back home. Great concept and design, but as for the burger Ellis does not stand much of a chance against it's American contemporaries. Admittedly, I'm not a burger person so maybe I'm not the best person to review, but I do enjoy a great gourmet burger when done well - or, in this case, medium. The burgers listed on the menu are tasty in theory, but the fulfillment is not quite up to par. My colleagues and I ordered an assortment of burgers - Classic, Bacon, Rossini, sampler, etc. Overall the consensus was that they were all right, not great. I ordered the Funky Chicken which I found rather bland. On the positive side, the service was good - they were able to accomodate our big party of 10+ loud Americans hungry for their burgers. Went here in late December 2015 for lunch. Small place, there seems to be an upstairs but I'm not sure. We asked for a window table but were refused as window tables seat four people and we were only two. Maybe I am being unreasonable, but the place was empty and the small tables could be moved around to fit larger groups so I couldn't see the problem. Staff were kind of rude, not very accommodating, we felt rushed and not appreciated. Keep in mind they won't ask you how you'd like your patty, for us it came medium rare-ish. Selection of burgers is good and there are veggie options which is nice. Fries have to be ordered on the side for some reason, but the portion of fries is nice. We had the ellis special burger and both liked it although it was stuffed with so many ingredients that it was hard to hold. I guess you're meant to eat it with knife and fork. Trying to do an American concept you really should be able to eat the burger with your hands. We also had onion rings, semi small portion but they were good. This place attempted to recreate conceptual New York burger fare. Unfortunately; although the burgers are decent -- they aren't New York quality. The Rossini which is a delightful burger with arugula and foie gras is hit or miss. On some days -- it is excellent, on others it is bland. I'm not sure if this inconsistency is attributed to the cook of the day or not -- but it's disappointing to play roulette with a mediocre burger that isn't average priced. I always want to visit a place twice, before I write a review, just to be sure that the win or fail I experienced wasn't random. But at Ellis, I knew that already after first visit, that 5 stars are the only chocie here. First, the location. It is located at St. Therese square, which is a go-to spot for foodies (at least for me anyway), especially on weekends. And the church there (St. Therese, surprisingly) is one of the most beautiful ones in Brussels, even though it is well hidden (in Brussels, not at the square :) ) Then, the service. The people there look genuinely happy that they see you! And don't be afraid to ask them to speak English, they do, which is not exception in Brussels, but still. Then the food. There is a large choice of burgers (vegetarian ones included, try Portobello) that range from classics to interesting experiments. My last visit was during the game season, so the specialty burgers were deer burger and boar burger with cranberries and sweet onion. I would never even think of putting that combination between two buns, but it was one of the most delicious things I've tasted since I've moved to Belgium. Last advantage: It won't ruin you. The price of the burgers lies in 9-15€ range and it is definitely worth it. So if you are in this general idea, try Ellis. Was there a couple of days ago at noon, to eat a burger with a friend of mine. The service was nice but not professional, we were two, they had us seated at the bar, though there was still tables upstairs where we could have stayed. They didn't even bother asking if it was fine by us. As for the food, the card seems really tempting, I had to try their special one, I don't even remember the name, to tell you how special it was... They didn't even bother askin' what cooking we wanted the burger to be. Anyway, bread was too soft, burger was on a diet apparently though it was more expansive than some burgers in Paris .
