Established in 1853 during Mystic's maritime heyday, it was envisioned as a serene, park-like resting place beyond the crowded churchyards of the time. Winding paths, ornamental trees, and sepulchers in Egyptian, Greek, and Gothic styles reflect the era's belief in death as "eternal rest." More than 13,000 interments lie within its grounds, including many of Mystic's founding families and civic leaders. Among the notable burials are members of the Hoxie, Greenman, Denison, and Mallory families. The names that represent region's shipbuilding, mercantile, and philanthropic history. I love cemeteries and have been to many because of my old job. Nothing compares to this breathtaking cemetery sitting next to the Mystic River. My sister knows my love for cemeteries so she drove me through here. I would have stayed longer, maybe a picnic by the water. We were caravanning that day with others so I wasn't able to spend the time I wanted. I have never been to a cemetery next to such a beautiful serene river. If I make it back to the area, this will be on the first place I go. They have a beautiful website that is full of history going back to 1853. This is a beautiful cemetery. I've walked through it many times. Not only is it huge, but it's well kept. There's a duck pond with turtles and frogs and the ducks are friendly. I've never had to enlist their services yet thankfully but as a whole it's a beautiful place with lots of history. read more
