Recently I had the task of planning my terminally ill father's funeral arrangements. Never having had to do this before and having the advantage of not having an immediate need, I was able to contact multiple funeral homes. I knew that my dad wanted to be cremated, and my mother and I opted for "direct cremation" the process of when your loved one dies at home, hospice etc. the funeral home picks up the deceased and after the required state mandated wait time the funeral home then performs the cremation and contacts you when the cremains are ready for pick up typically 5-7 days. First I contacted the funeral home where my family has done all funerals since at least 1974 they quoted me over twice the price that I had received at Rushlow Iaccoi. I also contacted another funeral home whose price was still $1800 more than Rushlow. That being said when the first once called me back and I explained that I had received a quote of less than half their price and I quote " I can match anyone's price" but by law they have to give you their "list price" I was almost at a loss for words, then I responded thank you but I'd rather not have to negotiate a funeral like buying a car. My recommendation is pre plan if you can, but either way go to Rushlow Iaccoi. They are my funeral home of choice! Thanks, Dave

During the very sad, overwhelming and emotional times after losing a loved one, it's comforting to know that SHB is available to shoulder the task and help you and your family navigate through the storm. In confusing and uncharted journeys, it's important to have trusted and highly experienced professionals available to help. Once again, after losing a close relative last October, we are appreciative of the professional manner that the arrangements for our cousin were planned and perfectly executed by SHB.

Driven by this location many time was pretty surprised by the ease of getting in and getting out as the funeral was promptly after the business day concluded. There were ushers helping us park cars as it was a large gathering from in and out of state that was here to bid farewell to a friend and family. The lot was pretty tight yet served us well as I didn't have to fight for a spot and was heading inside. The staircase leading upstairs from the lot that I had parked was beautiful, though we all were dressed in black attire. Two different rooms for seating and the bigger room held the casket and visitors came to pay their respects. A decently sizes funeral home that some had to squeeze by others while there was still areas for groups to congregate. I imagine that a lot of thought and preparation was put into honoring this man and this funeral home did him justice. Cannot speak to the procession the day after to the cemetery as I couldn't attend but I imagine thar it was well organized and handle the business of the Elmwood West Hartford area.

She did an amazing job with both, so when my mother-in-law was placed on hospice in March, we called and asked specifically for her. From start to finish, Nicole began taking care of business and always made herself available, even on her days off. We wanted to place the obituary in the local paper, but it needed to be in quickly. My husbands aunt and I were trying to write it together by collaborating over the phone as we live in different states. We needed to make the deadline by 12:00 pm and we just made it but since we rushed there were many error's that we noticed after. I frantically got ahold of Nicole and without missing a beat she corrected the article right in time for the printed version. We were originally told that they couldn't guarantee an open casket, as we were waiting 2 weeks after she passed to have the funeral so that my son could come home on military leave for it. But Nicole made it happen. She even touched up my mother in laws regrowth, and colored her brown roots to blond. The services went very smoothly and Nicole organized the whole event with ease. Our family and friends were very pleased with the results. I realize that writing a review for a funeral director is not as glamorized as a review for a vacation, but it is something that all of us will have to face someday for not only ourselves but the loved ones on our life. I had a negative experience when we buried my father in law, with another funeral company. I can only say that this experience is etched in my memory that even exceeds the loss of my father in law. Having a kind, patient, caring, thoughtful person taking care of everything after your loved one has passed makes the experience much more bareable. Nicole has done this for us in all that she does and we will for ever be grateful.

When my husband passed away in May, I had to scramble to find a place to handle the cremation. Buma-Sargeant Funeral Homes was mentioned by several friends and kept coming up in my research. I made the call, and it was definitely the right call. Buma-Sargeant went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and taken care of. My husband was what is called a direct cremation. There is no funeral, memorial or viewing. The interaction with the funeral home is limited. But that never stood in the way of them helping me through a difficult process. I spoke with Jim Burma twice, once before they came for my husband - explaining step by step what to expect when they came to pick my husband up. And again, when a few details needed clarification. He was kind and caring. He never once rushed me or made me feel less of a client because we chose direct cremation. His staff was equally compassionate and professional. When I went to pick up my husband's ashes, I got there far later than I was supposed to and they appeared to be closed. However, I encountered Jim's mother who actually lives in the house. I don't know for sure, but I believe she is retired from the business. That did not stop her from taking the time to bring me my husband's ashes. She also took time out of her own day to talk with me. We shared some of our mutual experiences with the loss of a beloved spouse. She told me about the things that helped her cope. She went above and beyond simple courtesy to a place of genuine compassion. As a retired pastor, I have been on "the other side" of the process when a family loses someone they love. I knew what to expect, but that doesn't change the impact when it is your loved one. My experience, over the years, with funeral homes has generally been positive. But at Buma-Sargeant, being the people who take care of our loved ones on the last day of their life is not a job. It is a calling. And Buma-Sargeant embraces their calling with a grace and compassion that makes the process less devastating. I thank each person at Buma-Sargeant who took good care of me, my husband and my family. Calling them was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Several years ago, my wife and I decided we wanted to be proactive with our final wishes. We wanted to save the burden not only for us, but our family as well. We contacted Betsey Buma who sent Leo Dube to meet with us at our home. Leo was fantastic. He walked us through many options, and we picked the one that fit us best. Unfortunately, my wife passed away this past 29th of December. At the hospital it was such a relief not to have to go through all the hassle dealing with what to do with her remains. I was able to say we have arrangements with Buma Funeral home. The next morning, I contacted Buma Funeral Home. I spoke with Betsey Buma who had me speak with her son Jim. Everything was handled per our wishes. Such a relief!! Every part of our wishes and then some were met. Jim and staff were so helpful every step of the way. Jim went way beyond expectations especially helping with The Veteran's Association on the final location for my wife and my resting place. I cannot find the words to express the care I experienced using Buma Funeral Home! THANK YOU, Jim and Betsey Buma from the very bottom of my heart!
