Writing this review is strange to me because I've never just walked into a cemetary just because. It's usually for a very unhappy reason, but I am so glad I explored. This was an adventure. Elmwood is a well-maintained cemetery. Seems like it's burial site for some well-to do Charlotteans. I saw so many names I'm familiar with. Including "Dunhill", which is the historic hotel I used to work for Uptown. Elmwood offered me it's own history lesson while also humbling me. It made me feel so grateful to be alive and able to admire this place from the land of the living, with all respect. If you ever need to get some mental or emotional clarity, take a walk in a cemetery. This was enjoyable. read more

Continuing the tradition of park-like cemeteries, Elmwood is a large space crisscrossed by peaceful roads and yes, lots of people buried here. Quite a few folks walking or jogging through the park, which I do understand. You get the urban workout of running on roads but there's almost no traffic and what there is, it's slow and quiet. At over 70 acres, there's a lot of solitary space. Elmwood first opened in 1853 and is the final resting place for important Charlotte citizens and many who lived here in Mecklenburg County. Textile pioneer D.A. Tompkins, developer Edward Dilworth Latta, former Charlotte mayor S. S. McNinch, and W.W. Smith, Charlotte's first major black architect, are among the hundreds of New South entrepreneurs, builders, political and religious figures buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Most famous is actor Randolph Scott , known for his film career that spanned from 1928 to 1962. Unfortunately, I was not able to find that spot. Being so close to Uptown Charlotte offers some good views of the city skyline. There is also a fenced Confederate soldiers and sailors section in the center of the cemetery. I just moved across the street and noticed that the traffic was like none I've ever seen in a cemetery. Turned out to be a Pokémon stop. A HUGE Pokémon stop. I finally decided to take a walk through. It's amazing as creepy as it sounds. It sparked my curiosity, so I decided to do some research. That's when I found out about the 3 cemeteries. Elmwood was where the whites were laid and Pinewood was the African American side and then there was Potters, where the poor was buried. I found out that it was a fence that kept the cemetery segregated until 1969 (when it was removed). I decided to find Pinewood. It's located on 9th street side. You can find the tomb of the first black architect. You can see where the fence separated the 2 places. You will find the tombs of the slave masters that was dedicated to their slave. Don't get me wrong, there is also a couple Confederate war monuments and other cool stuff. In all, it's a peaceful, educational, relaxing walk or jog. Walking gives you the opportunity to read the tombstones. It's huge so make sure your phone is charged in case you get lost and need to use the navigation to get out. read more

It may sound a little creepy, but I love Elmwood Cemetery--and I'm not going there for funerals or grave-robbing or anything. Once you get past the fact that you're surrounded by graves and, well, dead bodies, you realize that you're in the middle of a gorgeous outdoor area, smack in the middle of Charlotte. I go running here a few times a week, and I'm not alone. There are great concrete paths that weave in and around the grounds. One loop is about 1.5 miles by the way, if you're trying to get a sense of how much ground you're covering. It can be hilly at times, so be warned. Elmwood is also popular with dog walkers, although there was an issue a few months back about dogs being off their leashes, but that has since been settled. Most people have their dogs on leashes now, although a few stragglers are yet to get the with program. If you're looking to socialize your dog or meet other dog owners, Elmwood after 5 pm is a good place to head. But more than anything, it's just a nice place to take a quiet walk (again, assuming you're able to ignore the graves or appreciate them). Take a walk and check out how long some of them have been there, and the various passages they have on them. It's actually a really cool walk to take. read more

As others have mentioned, it does seem a bit creepy deepy to a) review a cemetery and b) also see the categories for this location as "Funeral Services & Cemeteries" AND "Active Life." However, that's a perfect description of Elmwood Cemetery. It is a stunning space of lush green grass, ancient trees and flowering bushes and home to some of the oldest resting places in Charlotte. During the daylight hours, this space is a breeding ground for dog walkers, joggers and pensive, respectful photographers. The winding roads are great for anyone who needs a bit of exercise and many of the gravestones are quite beautiful and interesting. Many of the folks buried here were from the same well-established (old money) families who still reside in Charlotte today. While it may seem odd to schedule a run in a cemetery, I promise that you won't regret it at Elmwood Cemetery. It's picturesque, interesting and, of course, quite quiet! read more

I think of this cemetery as a park. And as parks go, it is really nice. It has lots of paths, trees and flowers, which draw joggers all day. It less than a 10 minute walk from the center of Uptown, which is close enough to be convenient but far enough that you can see a spectacular skyline. And most of the residents are very very quiet. They hardly ever crawl from the ground as reanimated specters of their former selves and pursue you with the familiar zombie rallying cry of BRAIIIIIIIIIINS. Still, I wouldn't hang out here after dark. The neighborhood is so-so even without the living dead. read more

People confused me for a Pokémon Go'er. Which is fine. I spent a couple hours here just walking and reading the tombstones. Logged into my geocaching app and read some really cool things about some of the people here. (See pics.) This place is quiet. I did notice a few things about the grounds, such as a piece of luggage behind a tree and a backpack stashed in a tree along with some downed trees, even a tree stump that looks like it could expose the coffin of one person. Overall this is a peaceful cemetery and huge! Spent two hours just walking and maybe only covered half! Beware of Pokémon go'ers. I thought at one point I was disrupting a service, but it was a bunch of them. read more

I also love Elmwood Cemetery. I used to work at the NC Music Factory, and we'd go for coffee breaks at the Dunkin Donuts on Graham Street, and we found a cool back-way through the cemetery one day when we were trying to get around the train. It's a beautiful place, and we sometimes would stop and walk around for a second to avoid going back into the dungeon, I mean office. It's kind of a surprise to find it, so close in the middle of uptown, but it's a great spot. I'm a little bit of a creepy woman, so I enjoy weird spots like this one...but if you work uptown and are craving a little nature and a little memento mori with your lunch, pack a blanket and eat your grub at Elmwood. I find it to be really refreshing. read more

Voices From The Past is a living history event put on by the Mecklenburg Historical Association's Docents. The costumes were beautiful and the stories just amazing. Each character talked for about 4 or 5 minutes. They were the person whose gravesite they were at. Funny, sad, and many times learned things about Charlotte that I never knew before! Charlotte native or new to the city, everyone will enjoy the stories. Good for all ages. A lot of walking, so wear comfy shoes. Many people brought their dogs with them. I was there for two hours and only got to see half of it. But will go back next year to see the rest! Plenty of parking inside Elmwood. Remember there are 2 locations. Settler's had the founding fathers, Revolutionary guys and two slaves that were great. Elmwood/Pinewood was more of the mid-1800's to early 1900's era. There was a shuttle between Elmwood and Settler's if you need it. But it was less than a 10-minute walk, so we walked. You will not feel like you've been to a "history" event - much more entertaining that that. read more

I have to chime in to agree with others who have reviewed this spot. It is a beautiful, peaceful place for a walk. I stopped there this afternoon, walked around a bit, took some pictures, and enjoyed the perfect fall weather. I actually think this cemetery is much nicer a place for a walk than most of the parks in Charlotte. read more

i am from charlotte n.c but now live in w.a. i lived across the track from elmwood cemetary al of childhood untill i was 15 years old we yuse to have picknics in the middle it was the only place around with cool tree shade and green grass..it was also our path to down town. but the good thing its not seperated by a fince anymore. i also use to walk along it border to go to irwin ave junior high school the ol harding high school i think.. so final it is and allways will be a part of my life. john heny hill read more

From 1947, I grew up in Charlotte and heard stories about the man who was killed by an elephant and buried in Elmwood. My great-grandmother had a house on West 6th Street near Elmwood Cemetery. She is now buried there along with my parents and all that side of my family. It is disturbing to read reviews of people who have no connection to the souls buried there. On the positive side, the new apartments and young people have improved the surrounding area tremendously. Just remember that people who are buried there deserve respect in the final resting places. read more
