Was walking by and thought, what the heck. I'll stop by and see if they have a small toy or something for my dog. They did. They have several things. It's a pretty packed store. Top to bottom and even on the floor. The right side is mostly for dogs and you'll see other items for rodents and snakes. And on the left side in a semi separated room, you'll see mostly cat and birds stuff. There's a cat roaming around there. I am allergic and so I was scratching and my eyes were itchy. I didn't know why until I saw the cat walking around. The owner / person working that day was a bit too salesy. I was already going to buy something but I almost changed my mind with all the upselling. The prices were pretty good (compared to my home state of California where I was visiting from) so I decided to get it anyways. They have cleaning supplies, food, beds, bandanas and more. It's local so it gets a bonus in my opinion since I always try to support local. 4 stars because prices were cheap compared to where I'm from but probably a 3 star store. This store is fantastic, they have everything and the place is stacked floor to ceiling with unique and quality products for your pets. My mom buys her Scottie's food here and I called them all the way from San Francisco to see if they had this enzymatic cleaner my mom needed. (She was tired and a little scattered after cleaning up after a sick doggo.) Elmwood Pet Supplies does make deliveries but the owner who does it left an hour before. The clerk, Josh, tried to find a friend to drive it across town but like so many his generation, no one owns a car. Truly phenomenal experience stopping by this shop. There food is probably one of the biggest steals they have. Customer service was 10/10. I had the chance to speak with John who had an unlimited amount of knowledge about different breeds but also the food. What I valued most about him was the genuine feedback he was able to provide. Elmwood Pet Supplies is a tiny shop but it's filled with all kinds of good stuff for your pets. I have dogs but I see they have supplies for cats, fish, reptiles and probably hedgehogs, I never asked. They have the good dog food like the wilderness brands that are meat only, which keeps my 16 year old dog peppy. There is a whole aisle of wholesome treats for your dogs, as well. Mine will do anything for the freeze dried salmon! There is a small parking area if you pull through the small drivewayand a back entrance to make it easy to go in. They also usually have a cat or two available for adoption and you can pet them in the front window. Do your pets a favor and bring them into Elmwood Pets. Its been a few years since my previous experience, the terrible employee was let go and I have now stopped in a few times for quick needs but most recently to browse for my dog, Avenger's Christmas gift. My expectations since my disaster have been low as well as the amount of service I need however this time the man at the counter engaged me discussing my dog food brand weight of my dog. Being that Avenger is a pug weight and health related problems are something to watch. Our discussion was brief and he gave me two samples of dog food try, saying that corn based dog foods can lead to weight problems. So i gladly took the info in mind and am trying out the samples. I wasn't sure what to expect here. Because the shop is on Elmwood I did not know if it was going to offer things like "locally sourced, artisanal, cruelty free, etc.. " style dog treats or what. However this turned out to be just a typical animal supply store, just a little more cramped than other stores because of space constraints. They did have two very cute cats that we got to play with, that was probably the highlight of the trip. Overall pretty standard, not great but not bad, and probably your best option for things like pet food and treats in this area. I get in line behind customer and only then does he ring her up--so now I have to wait for the transaction. Still, ok, just another minute. Then they STILL KEEP TALKING. He could have rung me up and kept his convo with her going. Not great customer service but at least I could have made my purchase and left. To continue to keep me waiting at that point was so rude. I finally walked away, reshelved my item and left. I like supporting local biz but if they don't care about my business, why should I care about theirs I guess? I called before I went to Elmwood Pet Supplies asking for Black Angelfish and the woman that I spoke with told me that she would check. She assured me that they had some small ones but they were not monotone black but mostly black. Previously, I had went to Mystic Blue and bought some blue Angelfish because I grew tiresome with looking for the black morphs. I arrived at this place at 7:00pm on the dot and I opened the door not realizing that they were only doing curbside orders and that they close at 7:00pm. (They've since updated their hours on their different sites... most likely due to this incident) I was immediately met with argumentative and RUDE staff telling me that "they were closed" and that "even if they were open they are only doing curbside orders". Online it states that they are open until 8:00pm and even on their facebook page it says so. I will provide screenshots of this to prove that I was not showing up there knowing that they were closed. I told them I called before hand and asked them about angelfish and the owner says "No, no fish here.". Let's keep in mind, I have shopped here sparingly throughout my time in college and I know they sold them. Why would his employee tell me that the fish were there if they weren't. The girl I spoke with on the phone says "we do have those little black ones..." back to her manager. He is still in denial even after I repeat: "I called before hand and you said that you hand them." He follows with "I will get HER some angelfish and you guys can go." I do not know why this was said but I have a beard and I do not sound feminine so maybe he said this to be funny or something because I am obviously not a girl. He comes back out with the Angelfish and he does not let me see the fish before hand so that I would be able to access the health of the fish.They are wrapped up in a paper bag and he says "The total is $8.68." & "Where did you even see that we close at 8? It says it online that we close at 7! It's been like that for a year!" I give him my card and he closes the door and after he puts the charge through he opens the door back up where I show him that it clearly says online that they close at 8 and I take my card back with the fish wrapped in a bag. He then proceeds with "Well it's been like that for a year. I haven't scooped any fish in years and my employees want to leave immediately after closing." His tone changed a bit here and he was less combative but it does not dismiss the previous attitude I was met with upon arrival by him and the other male employee. For $8.68 I really should not have went through all of this but It's the fish that I wanted and they are hard to find around here. Literally every store I went to had every other variety but the black/marbled angels. One of the fish IS missing one of his ventral fins but they otherwise seem healthy and ate after they were acclimated in the water. This pet store is not what it used to be and it's upsetting but look at the climate we are in. Everyone is showing their true colors and thats fine. I'll take this is as a lesson and make a mental note of where to spend my money in the future. read more

Visited this place for the first time the other day and was very inspired by some of the tanks these guys have running. Despite Elmwood traffic and parking, this pet store is worth a trip! It should be noted right off the bat that this little gem of a shop has a skinny drive-way and a small parking area in the rear for patrons of this establishment. The place isn't huge but it is packed to the nine with things you will need for your pets. Look around and watch your elbows as you browse. The isles are tight and remind me of the wand shop in Harry Potter! I like that this place is local and seemingly family owned and operated and is some corporate chain retail outfit. These guys love what they do and are super knowledgable about animal stuff. If they don't have what you need on hand they will order it for you, as they did for me! AND it should also be noted that they care so much about the animals that they will risk not taking a sale and will tell you to wait, for say adding fish to a newly designed aquarium. Very cool and will keep me coming back to this establishment for further pet needs! Highly recommend! Also pet friendly, although not roomy so dont just bring a pet to bring one. read more

I have been shopping at Elmwood Pet Supplies for many years. First of all I love supporting a locally owned neighborhood store. The staff is knowledgeable. They have all the products we need. They always have interesting products for my cats, new fun houses, awesome catnip toys, good looking food bowls, not to mention sweaters collars, leashes for dogs and cats. Unlike the types of items you see at the box pet stores, Elmwood Pet Supplies have new and interesting items, always coming in. My favorite thing about EPS is even the animals think it's their favorite store, not letting thei walking companion think they can just walk by. It's fun to watch how stubborn these puppies can be, young or old, to try to go in the store. Next time you are on Elmwood Ave, stop in say hello to John, Tom and their cool staff, see how awesome the store really is. Sadly, my dog Eko will probably never visit his local pet store. As an 85-pound rescue dog who lived the first half of his life as a near-feral animal in the wilds of Tennessee, he has a tendency to want to eat small nonthreatening animals, and fight off the big ones. He still bays like a coyote in his sleep, and has nearly broken my arm off on account of a squirrel more times than I'd like to admit. A rumble in the aisles of this small pet store with one misguided Napoleonic terrier is inevitable, and might just take the whole store down. But it's cool. Pet stores like this one are more for the convenience and delight of humans, anyhow; if you buy your upcycled vintage clothes on Elmwood and shop for your sustainable groceries at the Lexington Co-op, it stands to reason that you'll probably want to stock up on your organic dog food and Earth-friendly poop bags here. Not only does it do your heart good to protect your pet from all that's bad and corporate in the world, it also makes you feel good to protect the Earth from your pet's need to mark it all as his. And as the adorable man behind the counter reminded me, "Dogs earn their keep. They give you unconditional love, and it's not even work for them. They do it without asking." So true, which is why my dog (who has taken to city living and people-cuddling just fine after his puppy-hood in the wild) gets things like teeth-cleaning bones shaped like dinosaurs, and organic peanut butter from the Co-op inside his chewy toy when he's good. Yep, I wish I was above these things, but that unconditionally loving mug and happily wagging tail gets me every time, even though I know he'd be just as happy with a pile of broken sticks and goose poop if he had his druthers. Hands down the best pet store in Buffalo. The selection is very wide from small batch treats to staples for a pet. The shops owner has helped me on several occasions without question. I overdrew some goldfish and didn't know what to do with them (over12" from feeder fish in 6 month!) and he just said bring them in over! Lifesaver! My dog lovesssss the bowl of water outside and insists on "seeing it" every-time we pass the store. One or twice we walked by and it wasn't open and her face was like a little kid locked out of a Christmas Party. True animal lovers and the best selection. Don't let the parking stop you from going here - did you know there's parking in the back??! They also carry Puppia which is hard to find in Buffalo and that's what my dog has worn since she was a puppy. Charming village pet store that is supportive of adoptions through the Buffalo City Shelter. I recently adopted a dog from the City Shelter and was given a huge folder of coupons and promotions of businesses and vets which support adoption. One of the coupons came from Elmwood Pet Supplies - they offered a free engraved name tag, a bag of food, a coupon for 20% off other purchases as well as a free self-serve dog bath. I went to the store to get my goodies and had a great experience - the guys there were very friendly and helpful. The store was like a doggy's candy store, colorfully filled wall to wall to the ceiling with toys, chewies, pet clothing, etc... Aside from the promotional goodies, I was pleasantly surprised that their pricing was equal to or better than the big pet store chains! Let me start off by saying this is a weak 5 star, but just the same - it still gets my five star rating and let me tell you why! For starters - the young man who waited on us was extremely truthful with us - to the point that he lost the sale of a few fish. After talking to us and finding out the tank size and then what I currently had in the tank (10 recently hatched painted turtles) he recommended just leaving them in the tank with nothing else. I was very impressed that he was more concerned over the babies then making a sale. However, I still needed some feeder fish for the larger turtles in my garden pond and was thankful that they were as cheap as they were - I'm not too worried about how healthy they were as they won't last too long with my killers anyhow. Selection in this store is HUGE - though the isles are narrow - I'm more impressed with selection so I forgive a bit on the over crowding. Some things did seem a bit higher priced, but that normally comes from having such a huge selection - you cannot always get everything at a great price, but they had things we've been searching for - like the huge stuffed tree filled with stuffed chipmunks - our GSD loved taking the little ones out of the small toy we had and he really loved the big ones. Selection in toys and supplies is huge - though they do not have a tremendous amount of fish to pick from - no points taken away from that - fish are just turtle food anyhow :) For any short comings they have - they make up for it by having sincere and caring people working there. Trust and honesty does go along way and anytime I'm back on Elmwood - I'll will make it a point to stop in again! read more

I am a big fan of Elmwood Pet Supplies. I am there at least once a week to pick up food, treats or anything else needed for my fur balls. They always have great deals on high-quality of food, they are incredibly helpful, and they live their mission. They foster adoptable cats, they volunteer at the City Animal Shelter and I frequently run into the owner walking his foster dog. I like the fact that the place is full of stuff. The staff are friendly, without being overbearing. They don't make me feel ridiculous when I am spoiling my pets, nor do they make me feel bad when I need to make a more frugal purchase. This is what a local pet store should be like. Went here the other day to see if they had grain free cat food. Not only did they have some, but they had quite a few choices, and their prices were even lower than some of the big chain pet stores. Staff was helpful, found cat treats that help their hips, that were almost half the price of big chain. Checked out the fish tanks too, nice variety and all looked very clean and healthy. I got a 30 gallon tank I gotta setup. I know where I am going to get my fish when I do. If you have a pet and live in the area you should go here. Super knowledgeable and friendly staff! They really take care to carry treats, toys, and food that are good for your animal and the environment. It's not one of those junk food treat stores, but trust me, your pet will love you more for giving her healthy, good quality food! One of my cats has a sensitive stomach and they carry a large supply of grain-free cat food. They even suggested that fish based might be better for him (he was on chicken) and it seems to be working well! I had called asking if they could fit my cat for a new harness and the owner and other workers went above and beyond to help my cat. I have been a customer of Elmwood pets for the last 15 years and they I have always seem to be stuck up in pompous. I was looking for a Particular type of dog harness actually it's called Dean and Taylor dog harness all you have to do is on do one clip and slip it on your dog and then re-fastened it and you're done so I called on 5/25to see if they had any. I was told they do not have any more Jean and Taylor dog harnesses but they have ones that are very similar. Number one why would you stop caring something that's a great seller I never understood that but anyway but similar to me that would mean comparable to what I am using but maybe a different brand name or not as heavy duty which is what I was told over the phone. So I expected the same layout for the dog harness. So I make a trip all the way from North Buffalo and anybody that's been downtown or in the beginning of Allentown knows what a pain it is to park. So I get there and he goes we don't have any more Dean and Taylor's. I said well I know that I was told yesterday that you have similar dog harnesses so he goes and gets one which I don't like that you can't even go in the store yet I mean Still have to be concerned but Covid but still having a storefront Closed is ridiculous I need to go in and see if the dog harness fits and if it's the kind I like and what he had in stock. So he brings out a totally different kind of harness that you have to unclip all four fasteners slip it under the dog and fasten all four fasteners. And I said that's not even close can I go in and look what we can't let anybody and he let me go look and see what else we have so he brings out something almost the same as the first one he brought out I said that's not what I'm looking for at all I go just because it's nylon doesn't mean it's similar. He goes well I know we don't have anything like your Dean and Taylor in vac or in the store. So why over the phone did you tell me you had something similar. To get me to come there and buy something. Well it didn't work I just am not going there no more I could've got what I wanted at Petsmart if I wanted what he showed me. The owners might be good at running a business business minded end of it but they're not very good with customer service at all if I could give them zero stars I would very very disappointed so I just left.
