Being of Chinese descent, I have my really hipster moments when I go look for food that are usually off-menu. I usually get polite confusion from servers, quickly followed by them forming a small, quiet huddle, no doubt having a laugh at the dude who just looked for dried beef tendons. In my snooty, pretentious mind, you're only an authentic Chinese restaurant if your cook can serve up the things I look for.
Yes, I am an ass.
Now, Emer's, in Makati Cinema Square, is a Chinese resto among Chinese restos for several reasons: its all-red interiors and paper lanterns evoke memories of Chinese eateries from my youth, the chairs are just the right mix of steel and foam, the wait staff are polite veterans who have no time for my nonsense, and it's always full at lunchtime. However, there is something interesting with this place, and that is the Maki Mi. if you don't know what a Maki Mi is, a first-timer friend of mine called it a "pork pares-like noodle soup, with a thick broth and a lot of ginger in the breaded, fried then stewed pork." Are you drooling yet?
The beauty of Emer's Maki Mi is that they can, and will, modify it for you. You don't like ginger? Done. You want it fish instead of pork? Exotic, ok, oooh what the hell, done. Extra large bowl, you say? Pay extra, done. I have, of course, sampled other of their delights, and they are as good as you can imagine. But here. If you managed to read all the way here, feel free to contact me, and we will go and share your first Maki Mi experience together. KKB, of course. read more
