I went here for Chinatown Dining Week, and I was pleasantly surprised. The area itself is super sketchy, and I feel bad about the business owners who are trying to make the environment better. Don't be too wary. They do have underground parking if you are nervous about parking on the street. We parked on the street and had no issues. It is a really large restaurant. I am glad that we had the Chinatown dining week because it would be hard to choose items. My husband and I decided to try all the dishes being offered as a special - $20 Menu - Choose one from each category: Dim sum: Option 1: Steamed shrimp dumplings Option 2: Seamed shrimp and pork dumplings Main: Option 1: Soya sauce chow mein (vegetarian) Option 2: Yang chow fried rice None of the servers seemed to be fluent in english, however that wasn't an issue. Even if we weren't ordering off the special menu, you can just check off of the boxes in the sheets provided. For being a weekday, it had a steady flow of people who all seemed to be regulars. Food came out fast and hot. All of it was delicious. I really can't pick a favourite. The dumplings were well made and stuffed full of tasty meat, the chow mein was perfectly cooked - simple but good, and the fried rice was a huge helping. I went there for dinner for a set meal that included various dishes. They were all decent and tasted good. My favourites would have to be the steamed fish and the peach Mayo shrimp. My least favourite is the vegetarian noodles, they taste decent but bland compared to everything else. The service is good. Once you order your food, they keep on coming until the whole set meal has been served dish by dish. Then they end with a sweet dessert soup. The restaurant is quite large and they have done numerous improvements over the years. When you first enter. You will see a golden chair which you can sit on. Due to the size of the restaurant, you could host a large event such as weddings and other special occasions here. read more

It is soooooo slow here! Came here on a slow Sunday evening. The place is barely half full and we thought, great! We won't have to wait long for food. It's been a long day so we wanted delicious real food after a few days of fast food. We waited AN HOUR before our first dish arrived. Then shortly our second dish and we had to remind them for some rice. Another 15 minutes later the rest of our dishes arrived. Food was decent or subpar. Nothing I would swoon about not come back for. Service is lacking. Even though food took so long, no one came even near our table to check on us or refill our teapots. Terrible!!! read more

Make sure you ask the person to repeat your order if you are ordering for pick up. We ordered Deep fried shrimp dumpling (Long Ha gok) but got steamed shrimp dumpling instead (har gao). I called them back and we have a credit for free deep fried shrimp dumpling for next time. Take out dim sum was still a fun experience for Mother's Day at home. I also ordered more rice rolls but only received one. There was no menu to order from, which was frustrating. So, the ordering experience was lacking for me. I also asked for hot sauce to be put in the order but I ended up using my own hot sauce as it was missing from the bags. Food was delicious. Kids loved the steamed pork buns and steamed lotus rice with chicken. My husband told me that waiting for food was not too bad. TL;DR: a decent Chinese restaurant with a very spacious dining area. Probably good for large families or planned events. The food is average to good in terms of flavour in comparison to other restaurants but I found it a bit too overpriced. Personally, I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. I went here with a friend during a Monday evening and wow! It was incredibly empty and deserted; the restaurant was very spacious but we were the only ones who were there. I did not necessarily choose to go here, in the contrary, my friend had a Groupon that was going to expire very soon which prompted our visit during that evening. The place was a bit tattered but the decoration was quite good and aesthetically appealing. At their waiting lobby, they have a golden throne that you can sit on to take pictures which is a nice addition. I understand that this place has been renovated a few times and the newer decorations look really good. I love the open concept of the whole lobby. It is spacious and I feel as though this place is absolutely perfect for an organized event. However, I would say the immense amount of space went against our favour because it created a lonely and awkward atmosphere as we were the only customers at the time. The service was good, nothing to rave about. It was casual, friendly, and hassle-free. We recieved our order in a very efficient manner -- only a couple minutes after ordering. I mean, it's not impressive as we were literally the only diners at the time but nevertheless we appreciated it. As for the food, I enjoyed it. We order modestly as we were using a Groupon but the food was greatly portioned and overall tasted average to good. Beef with Mixed Vegetables: I enjoyed this dish; in terms of taste, I found it quite under-seasoned but I really liked the presentation and it tasted relatively average maybe even better than other Chinese restaurants. Steam Prawn Dumplings: Good. My only complaint is the steam basket it was served in left a very unappealing mark on our table and I presume this is how they serve it everytime which is quite peculiar. Hot and Spicy Shrimp: I would order this one again. I thought it was super nice and the light batter paired really well with the shrimp. The seasoning and garnish was very good. I enjoyed this dish; It's simple but satisfying. Overall, I would not come to this place again. I feel like their prices are quite steep especially in comparison to other places. I came here last night for a staff party and it was a good experience. This is definitely authentic food and one thing I noticed was that there were a lot of families eating here. It had a nice community feel because everyone seemed to know each other. The space is giant. We went on a Wednesday night and had a private room for 10 people. We needed to order a certain amount of food to get that room which was a bit unnecessary because the space is so huge there was a lot of room. Probably could have avoided that and saved some money. The combo is A LOT of food. We probably got like 15 different platters of food. It was insane. I could only try the vegetarian options and green onion cakes and it was pretty good. I watched others eat the meat dishes and they said the food was great. I can't imagine that anyone left not full because there was so much food it was unbelievable. This place for dimsum is so great on a Sunday, not very busy before 11am and loads of parking space without having to pay is a bonus. Price ranges from 5.25-6.50 and reasonable for the big dimsum you get. Have to say for a family if six, we ordered and had some leg rivers and the bill was only $80!? I like the service, very fast friendly and efficient. Food carts came almost every 2mins and you don't need to wait or ask for service. Empty plates and tea were cleared and filled. Since we had a good experience the first time, we went back for another dinner. The service was good the first time and the second time there were too many staff for the number of tables. The wait staff seemed to hover over us at times, waiting to swoop down to take any plates. They can also make suggestions for what to order which can be good if you have no idea, or bad if they want to upsell you. The food wasn't as good this time. The chicken was too oily and pork dish too small and saucy, but the duck wraps were good. The one washroom looks nice when you go in but the doors don't lock, the stall doors dirty, and there's no soap. For a restaurant that looks this nice, they should take better care of the washroom. Also, the wheelchair accessible stall was out of order last time in August. It takes more than 3 months to fix an issue with a toilet? Food and service seem to be hit or miss, just don't come to use the washroom. read more

We came to this restaurant for a Chinese banquet-style wedding dinner. This restaurant has excellent service that is very quick - however, some of the dishes came a little too fast and we found ourselves flustered with the amount of food at the table. The food itself is decent but the cooking methods could use improvement. We had a fried rice and fried yee mein dish that fell flat without that "wok hei" flavour. The fish maw soup could also use more fish maw as there were hardly any and we found that the soup was too gelatinous/likely made with too much corn starch. Other dishes like the crab claw shrimp ball, fried crab, lobster with sauce, roast chicken and steamed fish were all fairly good - not great, but typical of an average Chinese restaurant. read more

One of the best Chinese restaurants in town! They located in Chinatown with very great food!

This is now my go to place for dim sum. Use to love Urban China but found the food qaulity has gone done and price up. Have never had an issue waiting to get a table, as this is has fairly large dining area. If you have a big group of more than 4 they have lots of big tables. Service has always been prompt, whether you need more hot water for tea or clearing your table. They have all the usual dim sum fair. Never had any major complaints though the last time the steam shrimp (Hai Gai) tasted a bit burnt. And sometimes they seem to not push out any of the more popular dishesfor quite some time. But the solution is to just ask one of the servers to place an order, so no big deal (I just find part of the charm of dim sum is getting to choose from the carts that come around). Like I said, I love this place for dim sum (can't soeak about dinner here since have come for it). Great service, clean and roomy dining area, and prices are reasonable. We average about $45 for 3 every time we go. Parking can be a challenge on Sundays after 11:30 as it tends to fill out fast. read more

Checked this place out for brunch at 11am on a Saturday, which is a risky time to drop in for dim sum, but there was no line at all and plenty of space free... which is always a slightly worrying sign. Since I was on my own I couldn't try a huge selection of dishes, but I tried the har gow (shrimp dumplings) - I consider these a staple of good dim sum and base my evaluation of dim sum places heavily around these. Also tried the pork shiu mai, another very popular and common dish, and some shrimp rice rolls. Overall the size of the dumplings was impressive - compared to most places they were huge. However, wasn't entirely impressed by the taste. I can't quite put my finger on it but they didn't taste completely as expected, as if there may have been some filler or other flavouring effect in there. I'd rather have a smaller dumpling but higher quality than enormous dumplings but lower quality. The rice roll was meh also, the sauce wasn't as flavourful as expected and the rice wrap seemed almost a bit stale, or dry. Didn't finish this dish or the pork shiu mai either. I had hoped to try another dish and was actively looking for some steamed BBQ pork buns as that's another very popular dish, but I never saw them come by. Har gow and shiu mai circled several times, which is good, but the selection of dishes that did pass by me seemed rather small. I was sitting not too far from the entrance, so possibly by the time carts got to me the selection was less, but a good dim sum place should be taking this into account and ensuring all tables get a good selection of options. So either they're not doing that, or they just don't have a good selection. It wasn't the worst dim sum place I've tried in Edmonton (that honour still stays with Tasty Noodle) but it definitely wasn't the best, and Golden Rice Bowl and Beijing Beijing are both significantly better based on the dishes I tried in this visit. This is one of two dim sum places we frequent in Edmonton as a family. On the weekends, they usually have the traditional cart-pushing but on quieter weekdays, orders are done by ticking boxes on a sheet. Atmosphere: 3.5/5 When the restaurant first opened, everything appeared very grand - being carpeted and golden including an emperor's throne at the front. Overall the restaurant is still quite clean with new tablecloths each visit and clean utensils. But occasionally, only a few stalls in the washroom worked. There is a heated underground parking but it is not very big. On Sundays, there is also free street parking. The restaurant is located in Chinatown which can sometimes be a rough neighborhood. Overall satisfactory atmosphere Food: 3.5/5 There are a few dishes that I like here like the 'gum lo won ton' - deep fried won ton shells with a sweet and sour dip, deep fried shrimp balls, pork ribs, stick fried rice, and various buns. Sometimes when it is less busy, there is not as much variety on the pushed carts so items may have to be specially ordered. Probably the priciest Chinese food (not just dim sum) in the City. Worth it? Ehhh... I've been here for both dim sum and for banquets. Banquet food was quite good, stuff like the cold cuts, the fried rice, lobster and garlic chicken tasted good, and had above average portions. Dim sum for the most part is also good, but has some hits and misses. Siu mai is good, sticky rice is good, but there were also one major disappointment like the lo bak go (turnip cakes) which was stone cold and horribly dry. Probably the worst lo bak go I've ever had. Overall, the decor is very nice, service is above average but the food is good but not great, with some inconsistencies. Considering the price, you can probably do better in the area, but it's not bad. read more

First impression upon walking through the main doors immediately brought a smile to our faces. What an impressive place. We felt very comfortable. The staff were so very nice. The bad part is this place has large rooms they rent out for private parties close to the main entrance and the majority of the tables are within earshot of these rooms and the noise/sounds can effect your experience. Unfortunately for us, there was a very young child being carried into one of these private parties who was very upset for some reason and screamed over and over and over for approximately fifteen minutes and ruined our dinner. Christmas Day came around and of course, it was spent sleeping in and visiting family. Normally, my mom makes a couple of cornish hens with stuffing and we call it a night. This year though, my grandma was joining us for dinner, so Asian cuisine it was! Mom chose Emperor's Palace as the destination, although I had warned her of the atrocious rating is has on Urbanspoon. Granted most of those were probably based on diner's dim sum experience, but ratings are ratings. Walking in, you're faced with a bunch of stacked chairs to your left (an open storage space?) and to your right, the Emperor's golden chair. The restaurant's office is straight in front, paperwork lying around and a computer in open view. A bit odd... but okay. We arrived for an early dinner so the restaurant was only occupied with a few tables. Service was quick and very attentive. The menu is extensive so if you're looking for something new to try, it'll most definitely take you a few minutes to decide. To start, we had cream corn and fish maw soup. This is by far my family's standard Chinese dinner soup. It wasn't spectacular but it was nicely done. Add with a bit of red vinegar and a sprinkle of white pepper and you're set. Although I'm a fan of Peking duck, nobody else in my family seems to think it's ever worth getting. Instead, they opted for the crab. It's available in many different preparations but my favorite is the spicy salt and fried onions. Complements with the sweet taste of crab, rather than the slimy green onion alternative. For my mom and dad, they enjoy the simplistic dishes of beef and broccoli and a chow mein dish of sorts. For the most part, they're easy enough to make yet somehow a lot of Chinese restaurants either under season or over season their dishes. Surprisingly, these dishes were well seasoned and the chow mein dish was made with fresh ingredients, including the seafood. For dessert, I wanted to try something different besides the purple rice pudding included with that night's meal. The mango pudding was smooth and silky, even though the canned fruits were doused in the sweet syrup which it came from. In order to get this dish, we had to struggle a bit with the servers to get their attention. By the end of our meal, the restaurant was filled and the service drastically declined. I could see why the reviews were less than stellar. Seemed like they didn't have enough staff for the night (granted it was Christmas Day, a holiday where most people stay at home to make dinner). On your way out, displays of Chinese delicacies are featured on the back walls: dried shark fin and the special bird nest, where the nests of swifts made from interwoven saliva strands are made into soups. Interesting! Have yet to try either soups but maybe next time. It wasn't the best Chinese dinner I had in my life, but it wasn't bad! My family was full and happy with the night. I'd return to try more dishes, hopefully a Peking duck next time, which seemed to be on every table except ours! read more

I found the options lacking and the quality of food just okay. Service was decent though (likely because there were more staff than needed). Went here on a Saturday evening with the family and grandparents (9 of us in total) to celebrate grandpa's 85th! They wanted the special 10 course meal ($238). Place was not very busy at all. First time trying out Emperor's Palace for dinner and the feeling we came out with was the food was tasty but not worth the price. Would probably get more bang for your buck if you order a la carte. However, price is due to getting peking duck and two lobsters. Anyways, for the menu, we had: - Braised fish maw and crab meat soup - my favourite soup to get when we go for chinese. Good as usual. - Peking duck (regular $50 on the menu): you get the waiter cutting the duck right beside your table which is cool (but they don't even tell you that they do it, kind of just creep up on you). Then all the sides to it - cucumber, cilantro, green onion, oyster sauce and the thin tortilla wraps). Delicious! - Twin lobster with cream sauce in noodles - two lobsters on the plate. Chow mein noodles were a bit too soggy from the cream sauce. Lobster was tasty. - Shredded duck meat with vegetables - this one we had three options (the other two were duck meat lettuce wrap and shredded duck meat with jelly fish). Not a fan of the vegetables - no taste to the celery, red peppers, carrots and onion that came with this dish. This one was a dud. - Stir fried mixed seafood with crab sauce - a bed of brocolli under a ton of seafood (big shrimp, scallops and squid). Liked this one because lots of vegetables. - Snow peas with ginko and beancurd skin in fish soup - dried tofu skin which is really good if you have never tasted it. There were no snow peas in it but chinese spinach. The spinach was really, really good. - Crispy chinese chicken (this is the one we switched) - Steamed fish with preserved vegetables - a little bit salty but still nicely cooked. Light, fluffy texture to it. - Preserved vegetables and minced pork fried rice - again a bit salty but a nice change to the typical fried rice. - Dessert of the day - tapioca Odd that for steam rice, they charge $1.50 a person (essentially a rip off - every other chinese restaurant will give you this for free in one of their big bowls). At least they accommodated our request to change one of the dishes. If your too lazy to read the above, basically, good food but a bit pricey on the set menu that we tried. The man said I can give you 15% off & your total will be $68.74 with GST, Cya in 20 min. When we sat down to eat the complaints started, there was celery, bean sprout, cabbage & a few pieces of broccoli in the beef & vegetable dish. The dry ribs were battered, soggy & pork chops cut up. Then the special fried rice that was made with mixed vegetables & some shrimp. The sweet & spicy chicken was also battered & soggy. Hey mister, I know you were closing soon, the fact that you threw this awful meal together for us & got $75 for it. I tell you I will never come back for your dim sum or order off you again. The food quality is above average but certainly not the best in town and the portion sizes are fine. Unfortunately, that's where the good news stops. As others have mentioned, the service is absolutely terrible here. There is no sense that anyone is managing the restaurant and the kitchen is totally disconnected with the service staff at in the dining room. We ordered a 6 course meal and while the first two courses arrived on schedule, there was then a 40 minute gap before the 3rd course showed up. Then desert showed up before the last 2 courses and they tried to give us our second last course twice. The restaurant wasn't even busy that night! There were perhaps 5 tables occupied when we ordered and it took only a few minutes for the kitchen to break down into complete dissarray. When we asked what was wrong, the waitress was quick to blame the kitchen and tell us that it was mayhem back there and that no one knew what they were doing. To top it all off, they didn't even come by to add water to our tea pot. Don't bother coming here unless you want to starve to death. When I decide to go for dim sum, I want the most interesting they've got--or, at the very least, be visited by the cart carrying the most interesting stuff they've got. Today, my parents-in-law, my husband, and I got little more than variations on shrimp dumpling, shrimp dumpling, and shrimp dumpling. A quick glance at the neighbouring tables confirmed suspicions that we were getting shafted on the food end of things. By the sixth round of something stuffed with shrimp, we were fantastically bored and just wanted to get the hell out of there. Our family tried this restaurant for the first time and it was not what all the reviews said. We were a bit skeptical after reading the reviews but decided to go anyway. The restaurant was clean and the service was fine however, the ladies' washroom did need some repairs. The decor was nice and the food was delicious! sadly i do not speak mandarin or cantonese. i only speak english and french. the staff would just walk away and not respond. i had to get my own cutlery and i asked for ice water for the whole table. they brought us tea. i asked for ice water again and the lady i don't think understood. i went the to the bar and asked again. when i asked the waitress if i could order off the menu instead of dim sum she walked away. i actually got up from my table and asked her again by the kitchen and she completely ignored me. i went to the bar and asked if i could order off the menu and and the other lady looked at me like i was from a different planet. she gave me a menu and said yes in the most absurd way. i guess it is completely unheard of to order off their menu. when we got the bill each person was charged 2$ for tea but we never drank it. i talked to the owner kelvin and he was less then interested. i won't apologize for being caucasian and i also don't tolerate disrespect. if i am giving my hard earned money to an establishment i was hoping for a little bit of service. my family came to canada in the 1800s. i am also well travelled in asia. over 20 asian countries actually. maybe i am being impossible but if i moved to beijing or hong kong i would make an effort to learn the language and adapt to the culture. the whole experience made me feel like i should not be there or they didn't want my business or both. i left a 0$ tip. the last time i didn't leave a tip in a restaurant was 6 years ago. food was fine but the whole experience left a very bad taste in my mouth. sorry but i won't be back at this place read more

My first time in this restaurant. The decor is high end, however customer service is extremely poor. On that particular day, the waiter wanted to push Alaskan king crab to 6 of us. Smallest is 10lbs at $16.68. We preferred a combination for 6. The whole order taking process was frustrating. The dishes were acceptable. Worst of all when we ordered 2 dishes to go. We had Dim Sum twice will visiting family in the Edmonton area. They serve Dim Sum daily with cart service on the weekends. The best dishes we tried were the Cha Siu Bao (pork bun crusted) and the Shu May. (Dumpling with Shrimp). Service is fast and all of dishes are tasty. To add to the camp appeal, it does have an emperor's throne in the front that kids enjoy sitting on while waiting. read more

I was invited out for dim sum on a Saturday morning and they choose to eat at Emperor's Palace. This is not a dim sum place I would consider to go eat at. Heard nothing good from friends and family regarding this restaurant and it's also out of my way. There's a fancy look and a golden decor. It's a huge restaurant and when you walk in it feels kinda chaotic. There were lots of staff everywhere - some were able to speak English and some were they just to make a paycheck. There were some in suits and I assume they were probably in a supervisory role. There was this one young guy that stood out to me. He was so enthusiastic when he announced the dim sum out loud, I thought that he would be great in sales! He needs a job that thrives on his talent. Most of the dim sum didn't really have much of a taste to it. We had the regular pork and shrimp dumplings, chicken sticky rice in lotus leaf, chicken feet, steamed shrimp dumplings, steamed BBQ rice rolls, etc... The food and the price was average. I wish I had more to comment about the food, but I don't have anything interesting to say about it. The place was crowded and unorganized. No one waited on us. Any questions we asked were deflected with excuses after excuses. We just cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone. I was invited to eat at this new restaurant called Emperor's Palace located in Chinatown. From what I heard, they cook some authentic mainland Chinese food so I was interested to see what they had to offer. The lobby is quite cold temperature-wise and decor-wise with the exception of a replica throne of the Chinese Emperor. The actual eating area was recently renovated so it still has the brand new shine to it. We had a dinner for six and it actually took about an hour and a half to push out a six course meal. You heard right. An hour and a half. The last time I waited that long was at Von's Steakhouse. For those of you who aren't sure if that's long for a six course meal at an Asian restaurant, that's slow. We started off with a dish that was similar to quail. Nothing fancy, just bbq bird of some kind. I'm not a fan of small birds but it was above average. Next we had battered fish. I'm not sure if it was cod or mackeral but the more I ate the pieces, the more I began to enjoy it. They do have a salty seasoning with veggies which make it quite tasty. The dish that came after that was a stir fry beef and veggie plate (Asian leafy vegetable). Surprisingly enough, the veggies were one of the spiciest veggies I had ever tasted. This dish was not bad. Next we had spicy beef and tofu dish. It wasn't as hearty or thick as a stew but the sauce was quite glutenous. The beef didn't have very much flavor but the tofu was soft as expected. Above average. Next we had a peppered ribs that were diced. They had a nice dry crispiness which was a nice feature seeing how it was cooked in quite a bit of oil. These would be PERFECT for appetizers based on the portion size. The last dish was your usual BBQ chicken minus the Asian chips. Even the dark meat chicken was a little dry. Not very flavorful but passable. Average. Dessert was a mango type jello which was quite thick and light to top it off. Bill came out to about $175 but considering how slow it was and the portion size and the staff's inability to report to us on when the food was arriving (they just kept topping off our tea pots, possibly to buy us off with tea?), they need to make the eating experience more worthwhile if they wish to survive in Chinatown. read more

This restaurant will not survive in Chinatown. This is the worst experience I had in a Chinese restaurant in Edmonton. Our group of five were seated and served tea. We ordered from a lady dressed in black who even doubted and confirmed by pointing to the price of the Chinese menu whether we can pay the price. After waiting for an hour, no soup nor any of the items we ordered arrived. We called for a male supervisor who seems to be taking orders too and verified that this lady was unable to place the order. After knowing this, we just walked out so angry. Our nearby table was complaining too about the slow and poor service. Apparently, the staff in this restaurant is not fully trained, so unprofessional and are not customer oriented. NEVER COME TO THIS RESTAURANT SINCE YOU WILL BE DISSAPOINTED. I believe that this restaurant is affiliated with the nearby Vietnamese restaurant Basil Leaf which we tried once and never came back. First off the way the servers dress really angers me, I mean, I dress in regular street clothes and the manager is in a suit in tie. It makes you feel like you dont belong. There are dones of damaged cutlery and teapots. Its a big location yet the chair are cramped beside each other. I had crappy food, and portion were big, too bad the quality wasnt there. This was certain a quanity of quality place. Manger was rude, no sense of urgency or effort. If you went to All Happy family you would of gotten out of there in literately half the time spent. Dont be drawn into their whole dumb night club look, wait....nightclub I thought this was supposed to be a restaurant, oh never mind, I am tired of writing about this place read more

My go to dim sum place in Edmonton. Not because its food is amazing, but because its central location and that the portion and price are more reasonable in comparison with urban china. Can host big parties if you have a big group of people. read more

Slow service. Servers have a bad attitude. They forgot one of our dishes. When we asked about it our server said they would check on it. We waited a few more minutes then had to remind him again to check with the kitchen. He came back and blamed the kitchen on misplacing the order. Read that this was rated by avenue at #1 for dim sum in Edmonton . Usually we go to Golden Rice Bowl. Omg this place was terrible! What a disappointment! Servers were rude and the food was salty bland and the variety non existent. Perhaps the experience is different if you are Chinese. Think the food would still be bad. We have been eating dim sum for over20 years and have tried many places good and not so good. This place is my new worst ever! read more

The food was really good for dim sum. Service has improved a lot since it open. They frequently refilled our pot of tea and my glass of water. Overall this is a good place to go to for authentic chinese food. read more
