We have been coming here since I was a kid. Food is so delicious and the serving sizes are big. Staff is so friendly and welcoming. This restaurant is so clean and taken care of. I stopped In for a quick bowl of noodle soup over lunch. Scallops, shrimp, squid, chicken, pork and fresh veggies. The broth was also absolutely perfection and worth noting. After reading all the great reviews we decided to try this restaurant out, but honestly food was okay at best. Food lacked serious flavor with some dishes being so over cooked they were almost inedible. Overall the food extremely bland. But truly the worst past was we felt like the server was talking about us negatively to other employees numerous times in their language, it was so apparent it became uncomfortable and we left early, about 20 mins after sitting down. It was awful! The only positive was the food arrived quickly. But other than that this place was a total thumbs down for us. We will never go again or recommend to anyone else. read more

I have been going to the Pearl River with my family for over 30 years. First when Dave was head waiter at the original location, name of restaurant.. unknown. And then my family followed him to the Pearl River, when he opened it. It was a family tradition... David the new head waiter perfected the Yin Yan roll sauce with my Mom... he used to call it Shan's sauce. I was happy to introduce this restaurant to my friends and although it was just take out tonight, enjoyed the food and the memories! Order was telephoned in enroute and about 10 minutes later, we were there and picked it up. Hot, ready and bags filled with plum sauce, soya sauce and food. Still appreciate the yummy goodness of the peach shrimp or the beef and broccoli! Special fried rice and the addictive yin yan rolls! Family dinner at its best. This is one of our favourite Chinese restaurants in Edmonton. The can do Gluten free for my partner so that makes it an easy choice for us. We have dined in many times and done take out as well. They are always quick and prompt with the food and the service is great. If you are Celiac you should really try this place out. They can make most dishes gluten free if they aren't already. There is a ton of parking in the huge lot that services the mall. Paradise Shrimp is to die for! One of our favourite dishes. read more

My dad used to take me to Pearl River when I was a kid. I have very fond memories of this place. I was glad to see that they are still doing well too. My favorite thing here is the lemon chicken. It is sooooo good. I also love the beef and broccoli and the hot and sour soup it's spicy though!). The best thing to do here is order a few different dishes and share everything. That's what we do. And the dishes are well priced. The lemon chicken is only $9.75 so that's pretty good for a quality meal. These guys also have live lobster, crab, and oysters if you're into that. I would never be able to pick something out of a tank to be killed, but that's just me. I don't want to see my food alive right before I eat it. It's a great place. Check it out! Ordered some take out. Was impressed with their timing and how hot the food was even after I made a couple stops after picking up the food. However, it was a little disappointing opening my bag of takeout to find that soup/sauce from an order that wasn't even mine was all over the takeout containers. There was also a hole burned/melted in the bottom of my chicken ball container. Overall, the food was decent. Nothing to get me too excited about and want to order more right away. But, if I do have a hankering for some Chinese food, I'm not against ordering from here. read more

I worked down the street for years and never realized that this place existed until a friend mentioned it the other day and I thought we should check it out. The waiter(s) are very prompt... and don't hover too much, just enough to make sure you're drinks are topped up once the food comes. The friend I went with did all of the ordering, so I don't really know that was ordered. It was very good though, even the rice was fresh and not hard and crunchy around the edges. I came here a few days ago for the first sit down dinner of my boyfriend and my family. While the dinner conversation was so awkward it hurt (waiter, 'barbarian' is not an appropriate nickname for my man), the food was really good. I don't know the names of all the dishes because we had the waiter order for us, as he's known my dad for a really long time. We had the sweet and sour pork, which was not overly coated and really tender, contrary to most other Chinese restaurants I've been to. We also had fish sauteed in black bean sauce, which was really delicious. There was also a really unique, tasty shrimp dish, but the only was I can describe it for ordering is deep-fried in a yellow mayo based sauce. It's a little out of the way, but the food is worth it! The waiters are friendly, so if you're unsure of what to order, ask them to recommend something different for you. read more

Been coming here for years. Recently diagnosed with Celiac disease - unfortunately my favorite dishes at Pearl River are all pre-made using regular (gluten filled) soy-a-sauce. If they made everything fresh they could use gluten free soy-a-sauce but they make a lot of dishes ahead of time so they can server within minutes of ordering. For those who are Celiac - be careful. I have received different information from different waiters and waitresses with what is gluten free and what isn't. I have been told some dishes are gluten free only to come back another time and told they aren't and never have been only to come back a 3rd time and told once again they are. Sometimes I have ordered gluten-free but it has come out breaded and I've had to send back. The waiter has pointed out that the sauce has no wheat in it and I pointed out that the flour for the breading does. I'm not sure if they fully understand what Celiac is. The dishes they can make gluten free are just as good and in some cases better then the regular dishes. read more

This is my second time coming to this restaurant for Christmas Eve supper. The thing we like to do is just to let the waitress bring as many dishes as she sees fit, and to bring us whatever she wants, it's like a delicious surprise. We started with egg rolls, the large style ones. Then after the appetizer we passed around dishes of: yin yang rolls, special fried rice, chicken in a nest, peppercorn beef, peach shrimp, sweet and sour basa, Szechwan scallops with green beans and broccoli, pineapple chicken balls and deep fried milk for dessert. It was all very good, the only thing I couldn't eat much of was the scallops, I'm just not much for them. The service was excellent, extremely attentive, well organized, and she was funny as well . Ordered take-out. It was not good. It's seriously 'Canadianized' Chinese food. No bok choy or even a single water chestnut to be found, but LOTS of celery and (believe it or not) green peas in most of the stir-frys. Everything was diced so small it was more of a mash than a mixed vegetable dish, and rather bland and unflavourful. The green onion cake appetizer was actually a greasy green onion pancake. Even the won ton soup was meh. 4 won tons, wilted green onion bits, and a single tiny slice of BBQ pork. Won't eat here again. read more

I certainly expected worse. Having driven by this place so many times it looks a bit run down from the outside. Parking can be an issue here for lunch. Lots of cars in the parking lot around this time. I visited for lunch and ordered the beef in curry sauce. The curry was extremely mild, but decent. I found myself satisfied with the food, but wish the curry had more heat. Inside it is clean, but also looks a bit run down. Service was a little slow, but very polite. The food came out a little fast which always kind of scares me. Maybe they are just fast cooks? I'm cautiously and slightly optimistic about Pearl River. I would go again, but it wouldn't be my first or second option for Chinese in the area. read more

What a load of garbage. Chicke balls were over cooked and 90% batter, deep fried wontons also overcooked and couldn't even find the pork. Fried rice was so over cooked it was mushy. Dim Sum has always been my favourite especially during the week when I'm out with certain friends There are a few places on the south side & Pearl River has always been good. I will look sit there and sip my tea until the chicken feet come around ... yup! The only thing I order first, love them. We went there just after Covid19 release & there were a lot of customers to be expected compared to the food that was coming out. The chicken feet were old and rancid. No chilly oil or soya sauce we're going to make my chicken feet taste good. I finally mention it & our waiter said he would mention it. No big deal, the owner came around and asked people how they were doing... not us & no mention or acknowledgement of the chicken feet. We will make no effort in returning to Pearl River any time soon. I work hard for my dollar & when I spend it on good food that what I expect. Not all my orders of chicken feet were good but this one was bad. I don't like to waste especially food, but I will throw it out before I poison my family. Too bad so sad . read more

We were once again visiting in Edmonton and based on previous visits wanted to go here for some good Chinese food. What a disappointment! It was as if the menu and the cook was totally different. Being as there were 3 of us we first looked at the family combo meals but the choice ( yes one choice if 3) wasn't anything that sounded appealing so we each picked a dish to share and each had an egg roll. Nothing was good. The egg rolls were over cooked and dry, filled only with bean sprouts. The chicken chowmein had noodles where some were burnt and some weren't cooked at all. The almond chicken, which in the menu is described as crispy, had way too much batter around cold chicken and was a soggy mess. We also had Pekingese ribs but they tasted like scraps of stringy leftover pork deep fried with no flavor. At one point I asked the waitress if they had changed the menu because the food was so different from our visit just 6 months before. She said No but we were all very disappointed and confused as to the reason for our horrible food. We won't be back because you know it's bad when the memory the next day gives you the shudders read more

I don't think people understand that everything that we can get at a Chinese restaurant is western Canadian food, it has nothing to do with China other than the fact that it was invented by Chinese immigrants because Canadians didn't like Chinese food. Pearl river has some of the best fresh to order western Chinese style food, this is the place to try if you love chicken balls, spring rolls, sezchuan beef, and lettuce tacos. read more

This used to be the best Chinese restaurant for years. Centrally located on 99 St just off white mud freeway. We have gone for 25 or more years here. For the past year or more the food comes out within minutes of placing your order. Too Fast!!! But now they pre-cook the food and serve it fast. I believe the food has been sitting in the kitchen in pans and is not served hot enough to your table. If you order an odd dish it comes steaming hot cooked just for your order. And this takes time. I.e. Egg foo young or gluten free dishes. They made a mistake changing their cooking process to pre-cooked and ready in seconds. They shook go back to cooking each dish when you order. This would bring back customers and return it to five stars status in my books. read more

The Pearl River restaurant was great. The atmosphere is semi-formal with close attention by servers who take their job seriously. The food is artfully prepared with servings large enough to insure a to-go portion for later. The best part is the value of the experience--elegant setting with cloth tablecovering, great food at a price that seems fair. Recommended for special occasions. read more
