A friend from Hong Kong brought me to this restaurant last Saturday afternoon for lunch. We ordered from the lunch specials where you get a choice of main dish along with side dishes and soup. The restaurant was very busy and I was fortunate to come with someone who has been here many times. The menu could have been a bit overwhelming but my friend helped me choose from the lunch special menu, which I would also recommend. We needed to flag down the server to order but once we ordered things moved quickly. The food was very good. My husband and I have been looking for an authentic Chinese restaurant and I think we've found it! The soup broth was simple but oh so good. The Laksa noodles were tasty and a little spicy. I had enough to take home for another meal as well. We also got fried eggplant and Chinese greens on the side. Both were hot and delicious. Overall, the food and the experience were both very good. It was the perfect meal for a cold Saturday afternoon. I'll definitely be coming back. read more

After a long day of travels, our family and friends decided to have our late lunch here. We had a party of nine and they were accommodating to our large group. As soon as we walked into the restaurant you could smell the food, and it smells so good so we were excited to eat. We ordered an assortment of fried rice, clay pot, baked, appetizers, and drinks. All of which were pretty tasty and came out quickly. The servers are really nice and understanding to help us get all of our orders in together. Additionally the food was priced pretty decently not too expensive in comparison to other restaurants we've had in the area. Would recommend if you're looking to try some Hong Kong or Cantonese food. Ordered a cold milk tea for an extra $2. I wouldn't get the stinky tofu again - it wasn't at all lol, more like deep fried firm tofu. The cold milk tea was worth its price. It's quite a large drink. The rest of the food was good. It was large enough portions to feed 4 of us. Service - mediocre, they are quite a busy location so it takes a little more effort to ask them for things. I suggest asking for what you need when they bring you food/drinks. There are a lot of hong kong style food, but also has some fusion foods Ambiance - a small place with a lot of hong kong representation pieces. We are so happy to have found a great Chinese restaurant on the south side of Edmonton! They have quite a large menu, with a great variety of dishes! We thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered. I've heard so many great things about 852, but this was my first time trying it - and let me tell you, the hype is real. This Hong Kong cafe on the southside serves up soooo many delicious dishes in a newly renovated & modern dining room. Not being super familiar with HK food myself, we tried dishes I wouldn't usually order and we loved it! I'd say HK style food is similar to Chinese but slightly different. There is a western influence in some baked cheesy dishes, for example. Visited this place after a very long period of time (Covid). To my surprise the menu has completely changed and it is really no longer a "Hong kong" cafe as I remember it. A lot of the nostalgic favourites have been removed in favour of a more trendy fare. Top of the list is clay pot. I'm not sure if I'm convinced that this trend is the best but I'm definitely convinced that the clay pot they serve is really yummy. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I miss the good old favourites. read more

We ordered 5 dishes for takeout as we had some friends over, 4 of the dishes were just okay, however we have a problem with the clam dish; half of the clams were unopened therefore inedible, the other half were opened but the meat was in the sauce, we counted about 10 pieces of small clam meat in the sauce, at $19.50 this was a ripoff! read more

Everyone is pretty familiar with so-called Chinese food (which is a pretty broad term, to say the least). Which is why I was excited to try a restaurant that specializes in something a little bit more specific. Opening in 2012, 852 Hong Kong Café is a restaurant that serves cuisine from this small area of China (which they're technically still a part of, albeit with a large amount of autonomy). What's with the "852" in the restaurant's name? That's Hong Kong's country code. Voted Best Restaurant South of the Whitemud by CBC Edmonton's Best Restaurants 2019, I was excited (and somewhat clueless) to try this Steinhauer (south end) restaurant. I visited on a Saturday evening and recognized the building right away as one of the old Tropika locations. It's a large, stand-alone restaurant with plenty of parking. Inside, I was pleasantly greeted with quite a modern and bright space. The tables are made of light-coloured wood, the chairs are light grey, and there are cute accents of green apples around the space. It feels incredibly fresh and easy-going. I liked the authentic decor items a lot but overall the atmosphere feels more updated and less like a stereotype. Seated at a comfortable booth, we began to comb over the (slightly scary) menu. First of all, the menu is written entirely in Chinese with the English translations underneath. I love this. I also adored the anime-style characters on the menu which added a lot of fun. But also, there seems to be several menus. There's a physical menu which got handed to us, plus a specials menu, plus a menu online which seemed to contain different items. This felt like a lot and I was worried that I would order the "wrong things." It was a little bit confusing. We were also promptly delivered complimentary glasses of jasmine tea by a friendly server. Such a nice touch that I always appreciate. I also wanted to try the Hong Kong Style Milk Tea ($3.00) which can be ordered either hot or cold. This tea was quite strong and I liked adding a bit of sugar to take the edge off. Milk tea in Asia fills me with joy and this version brought back some nice memories. At this point I was double fisting beverages and ready to make some decisions. There are some things that surprised me on the menu and it's probably because my knowledge of Hong Kong-style cuisine is so limited. For example, the HK style borscht, which I assume has to do with China's proximity to Russia. But also the many spaghetti dishes on the menu. In the end, we ordered a bunch of different dishes and hoped for the best. There was a section of the online menu called "21st Century Hong Kong Dishes" and I found that most of the items that sounded the most interesting to me came from this section. Maybe these are considered more current versions of what the people in Hong Kong eat? From this section I found the Champagne Crispy Prawn Balls ($28.88). These sounded fancy and I liked seeing that the plating was done with style and care. Eight golden prawn balls were covered in an ultra sticky-sweet sauce. These were very easy to pop into my mouth and I found the crunch of the batter to be very satisfying. The prawn inside was large and meaty. I'm not really sure how "champagne" was incorporated into the dish but I loved the flavourful sticky sauce. This was one of my favourite dishes because it was enjoyable to eat and suited the restaurant's vibe really well. If there was one dish that I did know to order, it was the Pipa Duck ($21.00 for half) from the "Traditional HK BBQ" part of the menu. This is the dish that most people talk about when it comes to this restaurant. I also loved that they have a window to the kitchen in the restaurant where you can see all of the ducks hanging, much like a shop window in Chinatown. Served with the glistening, lacquered skin that this duck is so famous for, it's impossible not to want to devour every esthetically pleasing bite. However, one thing that I wanted to learn more about is the difference between Peking duck and Pipa duck. They seem pretty similar, although I did note the absence of the steamed soft pancakes that you get served with Peking duck. As it turns out, a pipa is a Chinese string instrument and Pipa duck is named for its resemblance to this instrument. Arguably crispier than Peking duck, Pipa duck is splayed open before being roasted which increases the bird's surface area and produces an extra crunchy exterior. Apparently only a handful of Chinese restaurants serve this specialized duck dish in Hong Kong, which makes it pretty remarkable that we can get it right here in Edmonton. Served with a thick hoisin dipping sauce, I began dunking my duck and marveling at the tender meat. The fat was rendered down wonderfully and of course the crispy skin was the star of the dish. I've heard many good things about @852hkcafeyeg for years now, but this was my first time here. I've seen @yeg.baking posting about the lunch she had here a while back and it looked delicious! They have so many items to choose from on the main menu, but I opted for their lunch menu, $20 for a soup, a side and a main. I of course went with the Fish Fillet Claypot Rice with Hong Kong Borscht and a side of greens, sauteed with garlic. My buddy had the same thing, but went with the curry fish balls as the side. The fish was cooked perfectly and the sweet soy sauce had a hint of ginger in it, pour that over the fish and rice and just mix it all up and eat. I really enjoyed the crispy rice at the bottom of the bowl, and as the sauce work its way to the bottom of the bowl and the crispy rice soaking up the sauce, taking a bite of that crispy rice was so good! I've never had Hong Kong Borscht before, but it had chunks of beef with carrots and I believe potatoes in a tomato broth, so good! I'm going to try and make this at home soon. Nothing special about the greens sauteed with garlic, but I choose it because it was a healthier option. The greens was sauteed very well and still had a nice bite to it. This is my favourite restaurant in Edmonton. I come here all the time. Real Chinese food. I just wish they were open for breakfast. My go to dishes: - Drink: Iced Ying Yang. Half coffee, half tea, sweetened with milk. Trust me. This is the most delicious iced caffeine fix. Better than a iced capp. - vegetarian dish: spicy deep fried tofu, extra spicy - rice dish: ying yang rice. Fried rice base. Half is covered in a shrimp cream sauce, the other half a tomato based sauce with chicken. - meat dish: Peking style pork chops. Saucy fried pork chops. - noodle dish: seafood chow mein. Noodles are part crispy, part softened by the sauce. - soup: beef brisket noodle soup. So tender here most of the time. I love it. So many other good things but I need to eat now. The fish was fresh and tasty! Not big portion though, but definitely enough for two people. The sauce of the fish fillet was little bit light, but it is good enough to emphasize the taste of fish. Went here for a late lunch with my sister today. The front/parking area is underwhelming but don't let it fool you! I'll start off by saying that you definitely get more than what you pay for for the food here. As soon as we were seated, we were given glasses of hot tea, which was welcome in this cold weather. It wasn't busy when we came in so there was plenty of space. The wait staff was very attentive and nice, and managed to see when we needed refills on our water before we even realized it. I ordered two things: the Hong Kong style french toast and the mapo tofu with rice. The french toast was perfectly fluffy and delicious, especially with the syrup served on the side. It seems that they combined 2 pieces of bread and cooked it together, and the pocket it makes in the middle is perfect for the syrup to pool in. The mapo tofu with rice I asked for milder spice because my stomach was sensitive today. They accommodated my request no problem. The flavour was pretty good, and they were generous with their tofu and vegetables. The mapo tofu with rice actually had a pretty big serving so I managed to eat only a third of it and ended up bringing the rest home. So unless you have a big appetite, this dish is more to share between maybe two people than just have one person eat it. Would definitely recommend! read more

I had the Easy 1+2+3 special with seafood laksa rice noodle soup + HK style Borscht soup + fried preserved tofu. All were really good. The fried tofu was particularly tasty. The mini BBQ duck noodle was not so mini. Good amount of duck. My teenager son was satisfied with it. The clay pot rice Chinese style sausage with pork ribs was also good. I have only been to this restaurant once or twice in the past and thought it was okayy... so I was curious to try again since they had changed their name, now to reflect the HK area code haha. Atmosphere: 4/5 We arrived around noon and it was moderately busy - not too packed but had a good flow. Lots of parking space available and conveniently located on calgary trail. The inside of the restaurant was bright, trendy and clean overall, with comfortable and spacious seating. Food: 4/5 There were tons of choices including a number of specials, various menus and more items posted on the walls. It could be a bit confusing for those new to the restaurant. We decided on some traditional items -beef brisket rice and wonton noodles. The beef brisket rice was ok but I expected the portion size to be slightly larger for the price. The wonton noodles were delicious - authentic noodles in terms of texture and 6 huge shrimp wontons! Overall satisfying lunch Price: 3/5 Slightly high for the beef brisket rice and appropriate for the wonton noodle soup Service: 3.5/5 Overall efficient and friendly Overall: 3.5/5 Overall good HK style lunch in a comfortable and spacious environment; I liked the wonton noodle soup! My family was raving about this restaurant so we were on the southside and decided to have a late lunch. It was around 1:30 on a Saturday when we arrived to find it was more than half full. The restaurant isn't large but it's clean and bright. There are booths and some tables, but not many large tables. We were greeted warm by a familiar server and tea was brought in large cups instead of the small tea cups. It's likely easier so they don't have to be refilled as frequent as they don't leave a tea pot on the table. We ordered 2 dishes; shrimp wonton noodle soup and chow mein and I think the price was about $20 for both. The soup had about 6 large shrimp wontons and the broth was tasty. Very tasty! The assorted chow mein had veggies, seafood, meat, and crispy noodles. My mom and sister liked it. The bathroom was a little messy with papers on the floor but they did have soap which is a good sign so you know staff should be using it! My family loves this place! Today I went there with my mom and sister for lunch and ordered our usual favourites - assorted meat chow mein and black bean beef ho fan. We decided to try the chinese donut rice roll too. Both noodle dishes were delicious, full of meat, big shrimp and squid and vegetables. The chinese donut was a bit crunchy so it may not have been made today but it was still good. The menu is quite extensive and has a wide variety of dishes ranging from fried noodles, noodle soups, rice entrees, congee, bbq meats, various drinks and also snacks great for late night. There is something for everyone. The restaurant is bright, clean and fast. Service here is great, many servers available. Gotta give it a try! read more

This place was highly recommended by my friends. It's a similar style of Hong Kong authentic cooking. I came here four separate times, each time with different friends during the duration of my visit. I say this place is above ok. It's clean, quick service and has an overwhelming menu selection. I would say a couple of dishes were on point, but the rest of them were below par. My favor dishes: 1. Curry beef brisket with rice - love the curry flavor and the beef was tender. 2. I come here all the time for lunch/ afternoon tea/snacks. This is the best place to go south side Edmonton for authentic HK food for a good price. They give you a decent size serving of food and has lots and lots of things on the menu to order. Some items aren't even on the menu and are on the wall. They have take out available so it's great if you want something on the go as well. I'd suggest coming with a couple friends so you can try out a couple different dishes without getting stuffed! Came here one night after getting off the plane to Edmonton. It was after 9 pm and kind of busy but it's good that there's ample seating inside the restaurant. This was the first time eating an an HK cafe in Edmonton. We ordered a few dishes to share. We tried the eggplant and basa fillet, yin yang rice and tomato and beef spaghetti. I quite like this place and the service was quick and friendly. I will definitely be coming back here the next time I'm in town. read more

Quick & friendly service. I've never liked the practice of serving hot tea in plastic tumblers, but this place does as does other Hong Kong style places do. Menu is a mash up of western, Chinese western, and traditional Chinese & Asian food. I'd recommend this place for ordering individual meals rather than ordering to eat family style because the portions tend to run smaller than other places. 6 dishes fed 5 adults plus a toddler with no leftovers & we had room for dessert. We ordered: baked bolognese spaghetti, baked seafood & (fried) rice, beef brisket & green vegetable (Yu choy) with rice, shanghai fried noodles, soy chicken & garlic, and shrimp & peach yum yum. I've been wanting to go to this place for a while as I am very curious about HK style food and this cafe seemed like a safe start. The location on Calgary train and the big '852 Hong Kong cafe' sign means that it is impossible to miss this place. I went here with a friend just after the brunch rush on a Saturday and we were seated right away and given some hot green tea, which was great. The menu is huge and very nicely put together, and there are some visual representations of featured items. I was very interested in trying the 'HK style grill' items that can be served either with rice or pasta. I chose to order the grilled pork and chicken with rice and mushroom sauce. I also ordered a quarter portion of the roasted duck and my friend ordered a soupy noodle bowl. The portions are generous and will definitely fill you up. My favorite of the three items was definitely the roasted duck, it was seasoned and cooked perfectly, I would definitely recommend ordering it. The HK style grill dish on the other hand arrived with a mountain of rice but not enough sauce to go with it. Both the pork and the chicken were battered and fried very much like a schnitzel. Although the flavour wasn't bad, the dish was a bit too dry for my liking. The chicken noodle bowl that my friend ordered was also a bit bland although it was marked spicy on the menu. There were no sauces on our table and we had to wait a good 6-7 minutes before we could flag down a server to bring us some hot sauce. And the service was unfortunately a problem throughout for me as even towards the end we had to wait a long time for someone to stop by so we could ask to pack the leftovers. Of course this could be a one off issue that occurred on that particular day. Overall there are definitely some cool items on the menu that I will go back to try. read more

Came to the restaurant at 4 because we skipped lunch and it was pretty empty. We ordered the roasted duck, curry beef brisket and soya sauce noodles. Was disappointed in all 3. The soya sauce noodles just tasted like oil, the duck was very dry and the curry was only luke warm and the potatoes in the curry tasted old. It was also frustrating when we had to wait for the noodles and duck. The curry came out right away but the noodles and duck didn't come out until the person was done eating their curry. For the Restaurant to only have 4 tables, it really shouldn't have taken that long. Also when another table sat down beside us and ordered, their food came out in 5 min and they ordered the exact same items that we did. Definitely disappointed in the wait time and quality of food but will probably come back just to see if they will redeem themselves. read more

Edit: Since I wrote my review, the restaurant changed its name from Cafe de Tropika to 852 Hong Kong Cafe. Despite the similar name, Cafe de Tropika is not related to Tropika Malaysian Cuisine. My coworkers and I made that unfortunate mistake on our lunch break this week. We realized our mistake as soon as we walked through the door and saw that Cafe de Tropika serves Hong Kong cuisine, not Malaysian but there was no time to spare driving to the other restaurant. Atmosphere is nothing special. They have a booth set up along the windows and we noticed that some of the booths were literally taped together. They serve hot green tea at the beginning of the meal which is a nice gesture but it was served out of water glasses rather than tea cups. I was pleased to see a small section of vegetable dishes which is rare at Chinese restaurants. I choose the mixed vegetables on fried noodles and regretted my choice. Should have gone with a softer noodle because my crispy noodles arrived blackened along the edges. Besides being burnt, the dish was nothing special, just generic and bland. Overall I was fairly underwhelmed and I definitely wished that we'd doubled checked the name before we decided to have lunch here. Hard pass. read more

The old owners of Garden Bakery (all you OG clubbers who used to go here for late night eats after clubbing The Bronze or Barry T's know what I'm talking about) and the owner of Tropika have joined forces to deliver a new oasis for some Hong Kong throwback dishes. Afraid of fights, stabbings, gunfire, and a high probability of dodging vomit at Garden Bakery? No problem. Cafe Tropika is clean and has some modern paint and decor action going. Afraid of super greasy and questionable food? No problem. Cafe Tropika surprisingly has some "meen" noodle dishes that doesn't drip with grease. The baked seafood rice was buttery smooth. The classic Hong Kong stir fry noodles hits you right in tasteland and coupled with a nice cold glass of iced milky tea will have you saying, "This is flavor country". Ten dollar dishes, family style eating, we have ourselves a winner, chicken for dinner. read more

I walked into a modern and clean looking restaurant. Plenty of familiar faces. Asian servers from Garden Bakery also worked here. The menus were colorful and easy to follow. Hot tea was brought to the table quickly. Lightly greased fried rice was absolutely tasty. It was prepared with light seasoning with added pieces of eggs, Chinese sausage and broccoli ends. We shared the fish congee. It didn't have much taste to it but overall it tasted healthy and good for the body. Service was fast and there were many servers available to meet your needs. It's nice to have a Chinese restaurant such as this one which it closer to where I live. We were in the area for an event so decided to check this place out for lunch, I've never been here before but my sister has a few times for work lunch. My go to comfort food is always Hong Kong style food. We went with the Cantonese chow mein, fish congee, seafood congee, fish fried rice and Chinese donuts. The food didn't take too long to come out. Unfortunately, though the sizes of the dishes of chow mein and congee were decent size, I found them lacking in what was supposed to be in them compared to other places I've had the same dishes. The chow mein was mostly noodles and not a lot of the toppings with it. Same with the seafood congee, felt more like just eating plain congee. Service is very friendly but can be hard to get someone's attention if they are busy. Also, we got the Chinese donuts near the end of the meal, as we originally wanted them to go with the congee. One last complaint is that we were constantly swatting flies away, as they left the doors open, as I'm assuming due to either lack of AC or it not working properly. Not sure if I will be back anytime soon since it's on the opposite side of the city for me. If by chance I happen to be around the area, I may give them another chance and try some other things. This place previously was Cafe de Tropika. We noticed the name change and decided to try it out. The menu is still branded Cafe de Tropika and the place has the same casual vibe. The menu has a lot to choose from and this is good for groups who crave different things. All the dishes we've tried to date have been good and this time was no different. We ordered the BBQ pork, Beef ho fun in XO sauce and black pepper chicken on rice. Portions are good for price paid. Staff was very friendly and helpful with any questions we had with the menu. This place become more and more of my go to place for Chinese food. It serves delicous Hong Kong style cuisine. Edmonton doesn't too many HK-style cafes, but this place will tide over my cravings for stir fry noodles, rice, and HK-style iced teas. The iced tea definitely had a lot of tea flavour... but man, the cold drinks are $4! I guess I've been spoiled with $3 or less HK milk teas or iced teas my whole life. But at least it's good. I gotta say the service here is fab! The last time I came here, we reserved a massive table of 8 or 10 and they were very accommodating...even though we changed our arrival time. They're also fast!!! I guess this is because this place is also mad popular, so they want many people in and out as possible. If you come during peak times, you're gonna have to wait... so on Saturdays, it's best to show up around 11 to 11:30am, before the "lunch rush" because sometimes you won't even be able to get in. I'm not sure when the dinner rush is, but even at 8pm on a Saturday it was BUSY BUSY BUSY. The food's pretty much the normal stuff you'd find at a Chinese cafe, but they have a menu that's a little bit more "western". You can feed a whole family without breaking the bank. Generous portions, typical of Chinese places where you end up with some nice take out boxes. I do wish this place was closer because it's so far down south, but at least it's quite easily accessible from the Calgary Trail and parking is easy to find despite its popularity. read more

I've been here 2x now though the first visit was better. The restaurant has a Hong Kong-like setup, modern but no fuss. It was quite busy both times we were here but it's easy to get a table quickly, if not right away. The Portuguese curry pork cutlets were delicious, served with rice and potatoes. The cutlets offer a satisfying ratio of crunch to chewy and the curry sauce is awesome. Not spicy, just delicious! We also had the pork tossed noodles in black pepper sauce. The black pepper was quite strong but I liked the crunch in the noodles. The cold ginger chicken was average, but it could just be that cold chicken isn't my first choice. On our second visit we ordered the beef chow fun (the fat chewy rice noodles) and pineapple fried rice. The noodles were good with lots of beef, green onions and bean sprouts. The fried rice was a little disappointing though, with canned pineapple chunks instead of fresh. They do have a large menu though, so there's plenty to choose from. I'll probably be back to try something different and hope I picked the right thing! read more
