    ...pink?????

Honestly- I really wanted to refrain from leaving a review. Because it's a beauty school, it's students, you are paying over 4x less in NYC for services for that reason- but there was NO excuse for this and now this has been festering in me and I'm beyond infuriated. I came here for a highlight TOUCH UP. Partial foil. That's ALL. Instead I walked out with my hair fried and pink. I signed disclosures. I knew it was a student and I was taking a risk. I also knew, as anyone would know with a pair of EYES how BOTCHED of a job was done. What I don't respect is 1) there are NO licensed professionals watching over or advising, contrary to the signs everywhere. They check in for 15 seconds like they are making rounds. They don't actually look or pay attention. 2) I still had actual BLEACH- as in developer and powder- in my hair that was never washed out. Had I not gone somewhere the NEXT DAY to get this fixed- my hair would've burnt OUT my head 3) forget a refund, as I'm sure this place has included in all their forms you sign that you won't see a dollar back even in the event if you go blind- so I didn't even bother going that route, I paid and even tipped generous, but no offer to attempt to fix the INSANE color and now completely damaged hair.. I'm not going to call out or backbite on the student. They were nice. I wish them nothing but luck in their career and prosperity. My issue is the student at a point was clearly just painting my head with bleach and struggling. No teacher stepped in. But they DID have the time to tell me I can't have my Diet Coke out. Oh ok.. but my hair frying off is totally disregarded ? Lol, got it! Don't come here unless it's for a wash and blow and MAYBE a basic trim. Don't put a price tag on your hair- because I'm paying now 3x what I would've to fix what happened here over the course of 5 hours. I won't come back to this location because I'm traumatized now but.. Really. You have no idea who you're getting, YMMV always.. They do not watch over students either.

A short haircut appears deceptively simple but it's actually a challenge to get it just right. It was easy to book an appointment, the receptionist was warm and friendly, and honestly, it was a bonus to be able to listen in while students consulted the instructor with various questions. I will definitely be returning!

Today i went in for a color touch-up, something I had done about 6 times before. A dumpy, stocky, barrel of a woman in red lipstick started screaming me out for not know color codes. And not having a photograph of what was done in the past. What a nsaty attitude and a scream down in the middle of the salon. Reprimanding me about not knowing these are students and I SHOULD KNOW WHAT TO ASK FOR. Excuse me? I am paying $72 dollars for a service. Even if its student, I expect a bare minimum of service for my money. You are not doing clients a favor. Clients are doing you a favor to sit there for 5 hours so your students can make an absolute mess of their hair and then pay $72. Onto the students. The quality of students they have have zero competence. Again a bare minimum is expected when you charge $72. The students are so incompetent that they have no busienss even being students in any area. The school is doing a very poor job recruiting students. Most of the times you leave the insititute worse than you came in. The students dont give a rat's tail what they do. They are too much in a rush to sit and play with their iphones Lastly, they downright destroy your hair. During my blowdry she yanked so much of the hair out. I came out with a splitting headache. And after all this more of a surprise: A service that I expected to pay 50$ for came up to $62 plus 10$ tip. I could' ve gone to a professionals salon for this price. What a horrible experience. (you should've seen what they did to the client sitting next to me.)

She stated the $1,880 was only for the Chinese exam, and the English version would cost $3,500. This was never mentioned during enrollment after | clearly stated my needs. How could I possibly take a Chinese exam when I can't read the language? It's either a severe administrative failure or a deliberate trick to get people in the door. I have never seen a school treat a potential student with such disregard. Fortunately, received a refund, but the entire ordeal was a huge waste of time and energy. Be very careful and get everything in writing.

She makes it seem that her finances are good when in actuality it isn't and she scams good people out of money for low quality. When enrolling for the classes you are supposed to get a full kit. This is the new location of the Carsten Institute (original location was in Union Square), which I…read morelike because Grand Central is more convenient to get to for me. It's also a lovely and large space. First time I came to this place, it worked out so well, it was like a dream. I loved the instructor - he was so knowledgeable and suggested I get high lights then add the copper red color I wanted. The student was really nice and did a great job. My only complaint was that it took a bit longer than I expected - over 5 hours but that's understandable because the student is a student after all, and still learning... What took the longest were the high lights. Overall, I was very happy with the color and the price was great too- $60 because I got the model rate of $15 per bowl. Last weekend, I returned for a second time and there were definitely a few hiccups along the way. The instructor was a different one from last time and I definitely don't think he was as good as the other one. He said that I could either get high lights (but the top would still be dark) or they would have to bleach my hair to get it to the lighter color I wanted. Now, I never wanted to bleach my hair but they convinced me to do it. The student spent a long time on adding the bleach/lightener to my hair and used 3 bowls total for it which I think was kind of wasteful. Also, the way they explained the pricing was really confusing so when I brought that up, the instructor said he could give me the model rate of $15 per bowl and I really appreciated that. Anyway, after the bleach, the student washed it out of my hair, blow dried it a little then started applying the copper color. That process was really quick so that was good. And I really liked the towel the student used to wipe the color off my face- It smelled of beautiful lavender. When it came time for the color to be washed out, the student told me that I would need toner to be added but I actually really liked the light reddish orange brown as is and I felt like the toner would make my hair color darker. She then called over the instructor to see if he could explain it to me better. He said it was fine if I don't want the toner applied. The caveat was that I couldn't complain to them about my hair color later. I agreed to that and am so glad I left it as as, because now it's this gorgeous bright copper color and has the effect of high lights in them. The student did a great job blow drying and curling my hair afterwards. Something to keep in mind: The instructor mentioned the whole process would take approximately 4 hours, but it was actually more like 5.5 hours so expect to be in the salon for awhile especially if it's for color. In the end, 5 bowls were used so I paid $75 + tax and tip (you tip the student directly.) Overall, I was very happy with the results and the student worked hard to make sure I got the color I wanted.

I then asked what I could do at this point and the woman replied " well what day can you come in and be on time for??" No sense of customer service at all and very condescending. Will never pursue this place again.

One instructor regularly made students feel stupid for asking questions, as if every question was ridiculous. He would interrupt before students could finish speaking because he assumed he already knew what they were going to say. He also reacted poorly when students fact-checked something he taught or questioned information that did not seem correct. His attitude and ego made it extremely difficult to respect him as an instructor or feel comfortable asking for help. This same instructor was involved in a physical altercation with a student after the student complained that he was not receiving help. As far as I know, no meaningful action was taken, and the instructor was still allowed to teach. Another instructor frequently spends class time on his phone gambling and discussing which teams he plans to bet on. When students ask for feedback or an opportunity to correct graded projects before submitting them, he refuses and says he already reviewed the material in class and will not explain it again. Instead of providing constructive feedback or helping students improve, he often stares at his phone and talks about sports bets. His mood and willingness to help also appear to become worse when his bets do not go well. The curriculum is poorly organized, and the school treats adult students like children. Even when instructors say they have finished everything they needed to teach for the day, students are not allowed to leave without being penalized. If you finish your work early, you may be required to sit in the classroom for hours with nothing productive to do. I enrolled because I genuinely wanted to learn HVAC and prepare for a new career. Unfortunately, both instructors left me with the impression that they were more interested in collecting a paycheck than actually teaching their students. The lack of instruction, professionalism, constructive feedback and accountability has made the experience extremely frustrating. Anyone considering Apex should speak with current and former students and carefully research other HVAC programs before enrolling.
