Hi Everyone, I teach Cosmetology here in Brooklyn. I am looking at reviews. The first thing is, Clients need to remember that they are at a school and the students are practicing their Craft. Second, many clients come into the student salon with high expectations. These are soon to be cosmetologists who are practicing for the state board and also practicing their craft. The student goes above and beyond for these clients. So, when a client is rude towards students and staff, they will be banned from further services. Clients need to remember these are student stylists. Teachers here do not have favorites, We, have students who try hard, and we have students who will not work. We have students who are all day long disrespectful and we have students who are the Best and we know they are going to be the leaders in our Industry one day. We can only encourage students to work hard every day. This is a clock Hour school, which means you work all day long, you stand up and you do work when on the senior floor. We have students who will try anything not to do any work. We have rules in place for these students and bad behaviors. This industry is about politeness. Cosmetologists should not be impolite, not should they be cursing at others and especially their educators, and especially on the salon floor. Students need to realize that it takes two hands to clap. Do the work. You will have no complaints from teachers. Be respectful, Be polite. No Exceptions. read more

This is not a place to come learn. It's a place to go and get your hours. Anything you actually want to learn about hair, you have to take a course outside of the building. Don't get close to the instructors or staff. Most of them are shady. Nothing being done in the beauty industry today is even discussed in this school. They are still teaching hair from the Golden Girls ages. Don't think you're going to come here not knowing how to do hair and you'll leave any different. The only thing you leave this school with is supplies, 1000 hrs n PTSD. I went to take my state board only to find out that they have been teaching us the wrong way since day one. And they swear we had a state board guru as an instructor but she's the one who taught us wrong. If you already know how to do hair and just need hours come to empire. Ms. Marie is probably the worse teacher in there. All the other teachers make you feel like family unlike this lady who picks & choose when to treat her students nice. No one in her class likes her everyone complains. Highly don't recommend!!! read more

Today on September 17, 2019 I took my daughter to have her hair done at the Empire Beauty Schools at Brooklyn, NY facility where I've been bringing her over the last four years. The manager this evening sitting at the front desk didn't even greet my daughter and I. (NO customer service skills whatsoever). I first ask the manager for specific services: wash, conditioner, blow out and flat iron and she responds to me "well, the Iron Work will cost any where from $10 & Up based on the length of her hair". I replied "I don't get it, because the Empire Beauty Schools service menu states the price at $10 NOT $10 and up." Then the manager asks for my daughter's name which I wrote down on the note pad she gave me. I'm thinking she entered my daughter's name in the computer after I handed the note pad back to her and she'll then enter the services I asked for. Well, NO! The manager then proceeds to tell me that she can't give me the printed price for services because she has to wait for the network service agency to send back on her computer what the price will be which will take a little while. I simply said I was just here last week for nail services during the day and was given a printed price in order for me to pay for everything I asked for, and the receptionist still said that she had to wait. So I asked her if I could speak with the director of the business and she got up and went to his office. 10 minutes later she came back at the front desk and I said, "so is the price for the Iron Work only $10?" She said, "yes, it's $10 for Iron Work and $10 for Shampoo (which automatically comes with conditioner). Finally, the director Earl Thomas comes out and introduces himself to me and tries to "spin" the manager's misleading consumer price gauging. I then begin to explain exactly what she told me and he said, "yes, it's $10 each for these specific services." The problem is the manager LITERALLY tried to pocket EXTRA MONEY or CHARGE ME EXTRA FOR THE OWNER OF THE SCHOOL!! It makes me wonder if they're over charging customers for things that are not written on the service menu. Probably! This is what happens when you don't read!! Due to a current student suggesting the beauty school, I tried to first go to the Manhattan location of the beauty school to get my shoulder length dreadlocks washed and tightened. Considering the Manhattan location is closer to my apartment, I went there to find that the retail space where the school was is currently for sale. So, I got on the train to go to the Brooklyn location. At the Brooklyn location, I arrived at some point around 1130am on a Saturday morning. I expected to wait around for a while considering hair salons on a Saturday morning normally take a while. I noticed one of the students packing up her bag with another sitting at a different booth. The building looked pretty empty. The blonde instructor approached me to ask what I needed done. I said I needed my hair washed, conditioned, and twisted. She looked at my hair then said I should have come at 11am because they are not doing anymore hair considering the students' instruction ends at 1pm. She then started to explain to me that I should come during the week. They normally close at 8 during the week. Yet, I should probably come by 530 or 6 to get my hair done. Even then, I should take a brochure and call to see if they are having night classes. Apparently, I should understand considering they are students. I respect the right of places to decline service. I also respect the fact that not everyone can do black hair. I would have questioned the quality of the education, but respected the decision if they avoid natural hair at this school. Yet, I find a school instructor for a hair school expecting customers to call ahead when they have a walk in policy and to come at least 2 hours before closing ridiculous. I would have not been as upset if the location times were posted on the website considering I rode a hour on the train out the way after a 60+ hour work week. read more

As a customer, this was the worst cosmetology school I have ever gone to. I normally get my hair colored at Paul Mitchell's school or Bumble and Bumble University. Because Empire was closer and claims to have walk-ins, I decided to try them. I wasted two mornings trying to get my hair done with them. First they have the strangest hours for customers. In the mornings they stated over the phone they take walk-ins from 10:30-12pm. All their appointments are walk-ins. You have to come in twice if you want color. Once for a "patch test" where I had to wait 30 minutes for them to put a dab of hair color on my arm to see if I would have a reaction. I've had my hair color done dozens of times so I know my skin will be fine but that is their policy. Though you can walk into any real salon, ask for color and they're not going to patch test you. I come back the next day at 11 am. The lady at the front desk tells me I can't see anyone until 12 because "there's a lot of stuff going on." There were no customers there. The stylists were all standing around talking. I said I spoke to someone yesterday who said customer hours are 10:30-12. The lady tells me, "well, you're supposed to call ahead." Then that is not walk in service, is it? So it doesn't seem like people there are able to tell customers what their correct policy is. She tells me I can come back at 12, so I do because I'm planning to travel in a few days and wanted to get this done before I leave. I had to explain multiple times that I wanted a root touch up. They kept asking if I wanted my hair lighter. Like they didn't understand what a root touch up was. Then there is confusion over which student is going to do my hair. Finally, they seat me at a station and the educators goes to find my color after barely looking at me. The girl who is the student starts parting my hair, calls the educator over and she says now they can't do my hair because I have a small scab on my scalp. They refused to do anything. Good school with very experienced educators. I love going in here. I get to learn something new every single day.

Just made a call to find out more information of who I talk to continue my education. But when I spoke to the women on the phone she seemed to be ready to cut me off and pass me on to someone one else. This is a service industry and I feel like, manners carries you through the world. The more polite you are is the easier you experiences will be with others. Now I'll remember not to contact Empire for future education along with my companions who were interested. read more

Very rude and lied on the phone saying they will do my roots when apparently they can't without a test 24 hours before. So I drove there 30 minutes for no reason. The manager was just as rude and tried to rush me out when I expressed how disappointed I was for them making me come there for no reason without any regret or apology for misguided information on the phone and didn't come up with a solution...just simply negative and made me feel like shit.
