i just want to say i wish i didn't have to leave this review. i tried to resolve this through kaitlyn weagle and her supervisor lisa but it unfortunately did not work well. this is what kaitlyn weagle did to my hair. i asked for a trim and she chopped off half my hair without checking with me after i explicitly told her i wanted to keep my length. my hair is naturally curly, and kaitlyn did not have experience with that. she told me someone who did have experience would be coming over to help, but that never happened. even after she cut my hair too short, i tipped her $50 and left. when i got home, i straightened it to add some of the length she chopped off, and i found that it looked like this. some of the pieces weren't even trimmed. because she was a student and i wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, i texted her to tell her that my hair was uneven, just in case she wasn't aware. she told me she didn't know i would want to wear my hair straight and that she only cut it for "curly wear". she then blocked my number when i asked for a supervisor to call me. i decided to go ahead and call the salon at this point. they did not answer so i left a voicemail. after 4 days i called again. lisa answered and told me she knew about the situation and that i was no longer welcome at empire beauty school. i would never go here again anyway, but i was confused as to why i was "not welcome". i did tell lisa i would leave this review because i felt that it was unprofessional the way i was treated and she said "fine. goodbye." and hung up on me. i've never been treated so poorly by a business or an individual, and i'm pretty shook up by the whole interaction. i didn't want to be a karen about this but i just figured it was worth a review. edit: after originally posting this review, i have gotten countless instagram messages from kaitlyn weagle's friends and family threatening me and telling me to take it down. very unprofessional and disrespectful. read more

I'd give it a 0 if that were an option. As a retired educator, I am appalled by the lack of instruction the students receive. They leave this "school" totally unprepared for a job in any salon. Empire Beauty School in Malden is a complete sham and a total waste of people's money. read more

So yeah, the West St location at Downtown Crossing can be inconsistent and sketchy, but the Malden one is quite good. I have quite difficult hair, and they can always blow-dry it very straight. 5 bucks is well worth dealing with some of the idiosyncrancies of going to a beauty school. The quality of the work depends on the students. I have been to both the Downtown and Malden schools many times, and the Kenmore location once, and this one is definitely the best. I mean, I love Ashley and Jerome at Downtown Crossing, but Joyce and Edna are amazing instructors at the Malden location, without the impatient manner that you may get from the instructors downtown. You can always call in advance and ask for an appointment with the "best" student for what you want. Unfortunately, the other students may not get as much work that way, and they do not get to improve themselves. I try to give everyone a chance, unless I am getting a chemical service. I feel like maybe the students who go to the Malden location actually LIKE doing hair and have been doing it out of their homes for longer than those at the Downtown location who seem to be always trying to get out of a rut in their lives or have NO idea what to do with themselves. However, never ever get eyebrows waxed at ANY Blaine location...hot wax and students...dangerous. Don't let them push you into buying Regis products, except for the get it straight cream and spray. read more

I got a trim at Empire Beauty School and was really pleasantly surprised by the quality of the cut and the professionalism of the students. I was a little nervous after reading some of the negative reviews on here, but every part of the process went smoothly for me. The receptionists that I spoke to were all friendly and helpful. The stylist, Gina, was very professional and made sure to understand what I wanted before starting. I think she did a great job. I saw a couple of teachers going around and helping other students who had questions about their clients. The school salon was clean, but no frills, as I expected. For the price, I don't think you can do any better. I'd also note that I made an appointment in advance for a time early on a weekday. From the other reviews on here, it seems like weekends and walk-ins might be much more difficult. read more

I am a former student of this school and I would recommend others to steer away and go somewhere else. Though this was 2-3 years ago and I hope they have fixed some of the issues, I am writing this review now because I have finished paying off the loan I took out for this joke of a school. First off, they care more about enforcing the dress code than they do the actual education. The instructors have favorites and make it obvious. They don't inspire you what so ever if you aren't in that circle. They don't care if you fail or not. A teacher made a comment to my friend when she failed her board and showed up for extra help. She laughed at her and snarled "oh what did you fail?" Who wants to go to a place where the person GUIDING YOU says that? I used my scissors wrong for two weeks before sneaking into a different room and seeking another instructors guidance because my teacher cared more about reaching his quota of singing peanut butter jelly time 18 times a day than he cared about teaching. I told him over and over again that my skin is raw, I'm getting blisters and I can't hold my scissors anymore - he told me to change the inserts. Didn't ask to see how I was cutting, show me or offer any extra support. TWO WEEKS. They also thought it would be a terrific idea to supply awful tablets with awful wifi. My tablet which I payed for in my tuition never charged, I bought new chargers and still, nothing. I was not the only student who was having this issue either. Did they offer a new one? No. Did they offer a refund? No. So I had to search for the books to use when I payed extra for a tablet that was supposed to have all the books on it. As long as you understand that this is a beauty school and you are getting services from STUDENTS and set your expectations appropriately, this place is great. Obviously they are learning so they are not going to do as quick or quality of a job as a professional, but they do pretty well. You can't beat a $7 blowout! Advice: Either leave lots of time or call in advance and make an appointment. I did once get a manicure here that took 2 hours before the polish even went on. I just had to run out because that was crazy and I had to get somewhere :-/ But the trick is that to make an appointment, you have to request a specific student. I've been going to Empire for years, various branches...Malden needs some work. The students are good but the management not so much... Twice I've been here recently, once mid week and this morning (Saturday). There were close to 10 people this morning there and 1 student. I waited both times 1 hr 45 minutes to get seen and both times I had to walk out. Last time I was there I started my hair and only got halfway done and had to come in a week later to finish my hair... Now you can't make appointments not only on fridays but Saturday's too?! What's up with that? So now you can only make an appt Mon-thurs. & you better not be a walk in! I think I might just make the commute into Boston and go to the downtown location or make the trip up to Portsmouth NH and get seen there. Both places I've never had an almost 2 hour wait to be seen whether I had an appointment or not AND if either branch thought so they'd ask me to make an appointment for the next day. Gotta say they are to nice here and really don't charge enough for the work and time they put in to learning and mastering their profession ,, I went in and checked out empire because my friend is going to school here , the prices are unbelievably cheap so I figured I get a couple of their deals and I had to get a patch test in case I decide to get a Color which was simple enough !! Today I got manicure & pedicure it was as if I had a pro do it very happy !!and to top it off I only had to tip ,,cause it was practice let me tell you their learning so be prepared for it takes a while so let them it's a school !!! Also I must say the effort that go into making you happy -is all to make you happy !!! I checked on so I get a get a deep conditioning treatment which next Friday ill be back along with style and blow dry I will get a hair cut as soon as she ready for she not that far along ! Do not go here for nail services! I just received a deplorable gel manicure. They did not treat my cuticles, painted outside my nail, and unevenly applied the color coat, which could have been fixed by applying another coat. At this point in the service, an hour after I walked in the door, I just wanted to leave so I didn't say anything! Its unfortunate, I really wanted to have a good experience but this shows that they either put an unqualified person with me OR they can't teach how to do manicures. Some ppl do Great work but others hmmmm... So I was forced into a straightening my natural curly hair by my friend who has wavy hair. Hers came out bad and the cut was bad. I however got someone who had dress and experimented with many styles. She didn't properly put heat protectant as I like to go back and forth. My hair was puffy straight. Some of my hair still hasn't curled. She then was super adamant to trim it. Cut four and half inches off. Smdh. She said an inch and a half. I was left with a tiny bit longer than my shoulders when I came in with hair down the middle of my back. I have natural laters as my hair grows awkward so with the under curl and the green I had in my hair it came out so cool. But that was all me. Very very upset. I made an appointment a week in advance. I traveled two hours for a job interview in the area to then, get my hair done. After sitting there for a half hour waiting for someone to take me for my appointment, the receptionist and a student then tell me that there is no one to do my hair. Left steaming. I went to school here. Honestly the only good teachers are Mrs.Lisa, and Mrs.Kristine,Mrs.Jones. Everyone else has no idea what they're doing. Teachers talk behind your back and are really rude. I don't recommend this school at all. The head of the school only cares about students working on clients and not learning. All the money we get from clients go back to the school. If you refuse to take a client they make you go home and you cant get any hours. So essentially if you don't feel comfortable doing something you're forced to do it anyways. they give us so many mannequins to work on but once you get to salon level they only want you only working on clients. theres absolutely no point to having them then. Thats the only reason they wanted us to work on clients. I went to get an education because thats what we pay for... we didnt practice for our state board enough either. This was such a horrible experience today that I have no idea where to begin. It's obvious these students are not being trained fully in the services they're supposed to do and that the teachers have no regard for educating the students they responsible for. This review is not to insult the lovely student I had, because NONE of this was her fault, she was using broken equipment to do something she was not trained to do. First of all the greeting and staff at the counter were pleasant. My friend wanted a pedi, and I wanted a mani with Shellac and a regular pedi. My friend was brought over first, and 40 minutes later I was still waiting. They finally 'found' me someone to do my pedi. She said that this was only her second pedi, and it was extremely obvious. But it wasn't her inexperience that was angering. The 'pedicure tubs' were placed in front of the benches where the driers were, and they were extremely hard, carpet covered wooden benches. The pedicure tub was broken, and did not vibrate or produce bubbles. Here's the kicker though. I have a bad right hip (yes, I know, I'm 25), and the part where you're supposed to rest your feet on this awesome tub was also broken off, so I had to raise my foot up on to the girls lap to be painted. It was extremely painful, and she also had to bend my toes towards her to see the nails because they were up so high (which hurt). I was also mortified because I had worn a skirt and was trying my best not to show everyone my underwear, but my leg was way up in the air. My hip STILL hurts. A pedi is not supposed to hurt. Additionally, they had the most disgusting selection of polish that was stored in an old bag. It wasn't even brands I would buy for home use because they were so cheap. They were the type of polish that my Mom would let me buy at CVS when I was 6 because they were 99 cents! Brands like NYC, and Milani. They all looked old, and dirty. I selected the ONE OPI color they had and it was goopy, and obviously old. It was probably a discarded color from a student. The paint job was terrible. I've literally had more comfortable experiences at the gynecologist. I swear, at least I didn't have to put my legs over my head and show my a** in the middle of a 'salon.' I thought that was the kicker, but it gets better. I told one of the head teachers of my painful experience, and the broken tub, and she told me she would 'Discount' the price, from 15 to 7.50 for 'supplies.' WHAT supplies? Some shitty polish, and lotion? But I didn't want to get my student in trouble (she was so nice) so I paid it. My friend paid the 15. We went to a restaurant next door to have lunch, since our 'pedicures' took 2 hours, and I didn't even do the mani in the end. We finish lunch, and she stands up.. the paint from her toes has rubbed off everywhere! It's all over her feet, and there's almost no paint on her toes. We go back, and get the head teacher again, and she goes 'OH is it THAT girl?' and points to me, looking annoyed, and the girl at the desk goes, 'No.. her friend.' So she comes over and looks at my friend's feet, and she says, 'Oh, .... do you want someone to repaint them?' to which my friend replies,'No. I would like my money back, please.' The teacher then replies, 'Well, you know these are students.' Yes silly teacher we know these are students because it's a 'school'. We're not stupid, but you obviously are because you're in charge of these 'students' who aren't being trained and then are released on the public with broken equipment, and no comfort level to perform services that you are charging only a slightly discounted rate for. So yes, when the nails look like a four year old painted tempera on our feet, we would like our money back, and we would like you too look at your protocols and training a little more carefully in the future. And to the reader, if this doesn't deter you from paying 15 dollars for a disgusting pedicure, then nothing would. read more

I had an amazing experience with Stephanie at Empire Malden today. I go to a lot of Empire Beauty schools in New York, Boston and Florida. As an actor, I'm frequently looking for inexpensive quality places to get my hair done. My deep condition, blowout and flat iron with Stephanie was about the best I've had done in 2 years! My hair has bounce and is so soft! In fact, my last Boston-based stylist I followed from Empire Malden to her present salon. I called last week regarding an evening appointment and was told it is first come, first serve. So just now (8:45 a.m. I called to see what time they open for customers and a not so friendly person answers and when I asked what time do you start taking customers, she just says we are fully booked. Ok so I felt compelled to write this review after I was ATTACKED yes I said it ATTACKED by a student at this location by the name of Kassandra... I came here and requested this student due to the fact I was referred from a student which is an associate of mine by the name of Kierra... I had $600+ extensions in my hair purchased from Indique Boutique, I requested a wash, treatment and blow dry... The girl Kassandra doesn't consult with the teacher , I asked her if she needed to and she replies "no, it doesn't matter, they do not care." If admin or any higher ups in empire do not believe me review the tape to see if a teacher consulted me... I was there Jan 8, 2016 at 1:00PM... I thought that was strange but I followed her to the sink where she put washed, and applied the treatment in my hair... Not once did a teacher or instructor come over to check the status on the student or what she was doing with my hair not even to ask what kind of treatment she was putting in... Needless to say she puts the treatment in my hair and sets me under the dryer... When she comes back to get me I was wet all around my shoulders and neck because she did not give me a towel to place around my neck or under the cape... She then tells me she needs shampoo me again and while in the sink I never felt her Comb my hair I just see her get shampoo and apply it to my hair... She doesn't condition the hair and it caused it to matte up... She then had a instructor by the name Ms Burton or Berstein something with a B , it was an older woman with a wig... The lady kept asking how did my hair get like that... I then told them to apply conditioner and at that point it started to untangle... I was happy because finally we are making progress... The instructor then says she cannot handle how matted it is and for the girl to get a student to help... SHe sends over another girl that did not know what she was doing so I sent her away! Finally a student named Chrissie comes over and she was the only one who seemed knowledgable and was actually making more progress! At this time I had about three girls working on my head... The girl Kassandra, Kierra and Chrissie... I then tell the girl "Kassandra" to use a Nother comb because I noticed that was what was working for the hair... She says no it's not and I reply "well clearly you don't know what is working given that you got my hair this bad" she then says "I'm the fuckin one with the degree" (you get a license at empire not a "degree") And then .... Can't share the rest of the story cause now it's turned legal... Let's jus say this, she was being held back by students , I already was assaulted... But that's jus a little bit of the story... The teachers and director was telling me to go because they knew they didn't consult with me and she ruined my hair and they had no clue what to do with it... The director claimed to review the tape but umm.. Yeah I'm sure lol... And what all that happened they kicked me out the school and my $600 hair was tangled and horrid! But luckily I went to my stylist and I was able to get my hair done after losing tons of hair... I don't know what that girl's problem was or why the "instructors" don't step in and help these girls but hey it's a low budget school and it was my own fault for being cheap!! BEWARE STAY OUT OF THIS LOCATION! But like I said the girl was clearly an angry person... I am leaving this review because I feel like every time I deal with the salon it's a different situation or a different story. I called and asked for a perm. I was told that as long as I got there by 1 PM that I would be able to be seen because they close at 5. That is completely reasonable and so I made my way over. When I got there about 20 minutes later I went in and asked for my perm and was told I needed to be there by 10 AM in order to get the service. I explained that I just called over and what I was told and she basically did not care and said she was not the one at the desk then and they did not know who I talked to. She then told me that it takes five hours to get a perm there. I know this is not true since I've had several and they did not take five hours. read more

I was blown away by this experience, they totally exceeded my expectations. The area is kind of ugly but the hair experience was astounding. They are running a deal in March for free haircuts and 1/2 off color. The stylist Lauren was excellent. She even threw in toner and scalp treatment on the house. I thus got full colors, cut, toner, scalp treatment, and blowdry for $17. And it does not look $17. It looks like I came off Newbury Street (and with $400 more in my pocket). My friends are amazed. The only reason I could think of giving this place fewer stars is because it is not flashy. As I said, the neighborhood is a bit tough, and the salon itself is a bit hectic and all too clearly a busy beauty school. But I can't get over how awesome my hair looks for this nearly invisible price. I am not sure why there are so many negative reviews here. Lauren told me the hairstylists must complete at least 500 hairstyles before they are put on customers. She clearly knew what she was doing. She also let me in on some hair issues I didn't know I had, probably as it was a beauty school and not a high-end salon which would worship you instead of saying anything sounding critical. I honestly can't believe more people don't head to this place. You do have to not have any snob factor to appreciate it, but it's a real find. read more

Please keep in my this is a BEAUTY SCHOOL. You are being serviced by STUDENTS! I have had over 5 great experiences here at Empire beauty. The staff here really know what they are doing and are truly helping these students evolve into great hair stylists. Empire Beauty has transformed me from a brunette into a blonde!! Every time i have something done in my hair by one of these students i get plenty of compliments, wether it be full foil or just a deep conditioning and style. In short, if the budget doesn't allow for extravagant girl pampering time, this is definitely a way around it! read more

Went back yesterday! Hair cut came out awesome!! Foils still don't reach my roots completely, and it took longer than usual, but it still looks good! I got a partial touch up plus a few new foils, haircut with lots of layers angles and side bangs, and a blow dry all for $25. Can't beat that! The place itself is quite clean, which I liked, but there were hardly anybody available. And when there was, they didn't seem to like it much. To me, a review shouldn't be on the whole beauty parlor, but on the employee who served you. I had a woman named Miguelina. I asked for a certain length and I even showed her where I wanted my hair to be, but she cut my hair 2 inches shorter. I was not happy about that. And even though that was bad enough, she made little strips of hair way longer than the rest, so I had to cut the strips myself so that my hair would be even. I'm disappointed. I called to ask for an appointment and to see how things work when you're looking to get a haircut from a beauty school environment. I of course am unaware how things work and that 'having a class' translates to they're open to taking client for haircuts at that time. The women I spoke to on the phone was horrifically rude and talked to me as if I was 'slow', proceeded to talk to me in a slow way like I couldn't comprehend what was going on. she gave be a lot of information at once, being very vague about when I can make an 'appointment' or it being first come first serve. All I was doing was trying to get a haircut for my grandmother who currently just started losing her hair from starting chemotherapy. During me talking asking her to please repeat what she said she hung up on me while speed talking the words 'okay bye'. She was a complete bitch to put it nicely. Maybe consider getting new person to answer phones, because this 'person' is a miserable piece a garbage, that's a poor excuse of a human and the reason for customer service no longer being a thing. I wish I went to this school, unfortunately I didn't. I went in to have my hair done. It's a pleasant and productive environment, teachers were friendly and students were professional and genuinely seem to enjoy working with clients and doing hair. I just had a trim, and the student I had was nice and friendly and motivated to do a great job. I'm envious of the students here, it appeared to be a great place to work each day. The vibe says a lot. At NEHA all you hear is complaining, loud whining and vulgar language in the clinic and its dirty and unsanitary to boot.. It's 9 torturous months of my life ill never get back. First I would like to start this review by saying the students in fact do an incredible job, and the educators are very knowledgeable as well as friendly. However, during my visit today I waited over an hour- and I had to let the person upfront know I had been waiting, she was apologetic but let me know I would be unable to get color done, do to the time. Very frustrating and unacceptable. Not only did I have to take/waste time of my day, I didn't even get to the service I want. I would go back but try to book an appointment with a specific student to try to avoid this again. Went in on a Thursday night asking about the manicures and was told by a very nice front desk lady to walk in at 9 on Saturday and introduced me to their wide variety of services so I decided to have a haircut instead. Saturday comes along, I arrive at 9, put my name down on the check in sheet, and sat for an hour and half waiting for my haircut. After waiting for decades for my haircut, the incredibly rude receptionist shoos everyone below the second person that checked in out and that they are not going to service any of us. It kind of bothered me that the only people being shooed were Asian people, but fine, I understand this is a school and these are students running the services so they are probably short staffed. I leave and head home. However, in the afternoon after they supposedly are not taking in anymore customers, I pass by and see 3 more customers being serviced. What happened to not servicing anymore today? And surprise, the customers are not Asian. I don't know what the Saturday reception's deal is against Asian customers but management really needs to step in at this branch. read more

It's really important for everyone to remember that this is a hair SCHOOL. SCHOOL means these girls and guys are still learning. That is why the price is so cheap. You aren't paying the girls, you are paying for the products and time and that is it. As far as I am concerned to expect high end salon performance at a SCHOOL an utterly implausible expectation. IF you want high end go pay the high price. And also, these girls and guys do a fantastic job. They are supervised by some of the most experienced and best hairstylists out there. The instructors are fabulous. They are attentive, knowledgeable and always there when anyone needs them. I cannot tell you how many times an instructor has watched over a student to make sure they are doing well. These girls and guys spend months learning how to cut, color, foil, perm, and style hair. The knowledge is fresh in their minds and they are well-trained professionals. Sure, every now and then you get that one girl/guy who doesn't really want to be there or is having a bad day. So what? Being a hairstylist is not easy. It is not solely the student's job to make sure you have a good experience. YOU are responsible for how you choose to experience something. If you want to have your head up your butt and complain about everything that is your problem, not the stylists. IF the student messes up, there is always someone there to fix it and not charge you for it. But I gotta tell you, it is just as likely that someone can mess up your hair in a "real salon." Just wanted to thank the staff at empire for all their help. I recently decided that I needed a career change. I went in for an interview with Yves and after 30 minutes I knew I had made the right choice. The level of professionalism and experience between the directors and teachers is amazing. Lynne and Christine were always there when I needed guidance and helped me figure out how to take my new skills to the real world. I have a great job on Newbury st now and I owe it all to them.
