Sketchy vibes are kind of my thing and to some this experience may be considered pretty sketchy getting all massaged up in a huge room with a bunch of other people. This was actually far from sketchy or that could mean I've just been to a lot of sketchier things hahahaha. I firmly believe in going to different schools for services like hair, skin, massage care...because hey why not support a future professional...they have to learn and practice and I don't mind paying less! It was easy to call and leave a message for my preferred date and time. I called in the morning and received a call back that afternoon (when there was clinic). There are limited days and hours that the students have clinic so keep that in mind. It worked out for me because luckily there are evening hours. Check in was easy and at the time of my service a 1 hour massage is listed as $40, no add ons available that I know of. You pay before starting. Josie was my student and she greeted me and asked if I had visited before. I had not so she gave me a brief rundown as she guided me to the changing area. It's a large dimly lit room with multiple massage beds. Relaxing spa music was playing which is great for potentially snoring or awkward breathing sounds which could occur. I was given a very large sheet which I appreciated as some other places I swear try to give me the smallest square of fabric possible, barely covering all the goodies....not an issue here though! I took of everything but my panties in order to need impede on her flow. She led me to her massage bed and I hopped on! She asked if there were any specific areas I would like addressed and I told her my lower back gets on/off tightness. I received a full body massage and always felt properly draped at all times. Pressure was applied and changed as needed on various body parts and she checked in with me to ask if I was ok multiple times. I had an amazing experience! I tipped her in cash after my service...so be sure to bring some cash for your student. My first time here and will definitely be back when I'm in the area! As with any service based school, of course your experience will vary depend on who services you but verbally everyone will have the basics down to be able to service you...I've not had any issues and hope the same for you LOL If you've read this far thanks! This review is for receiving massages as a client. I will never return. You're better off paying slightly more for massage envy or some place in china town. And least they realize they are providing product/service. The massages at The Massage School are hit or miss, they discourage requests outside of a specific routine, it's in a dungeon of a basement with no separators between tables and they give you a bed sheet to wrap around you like a toga. But that's what you get for $40. If you find a good person, you can request them until they graduate out, including for 2 hr massages. What makes this 1 star is their ineffective scheduling system and even worse communication with clients. They have repeatedly shifted me from my requested people with zero communication. I've had some pretty bad experiences as a result. What's the point of requesting someone and traveling 45 minutes to find out it's with a masseuse who has no idea what they're doing? Thats not the agreement we had. Sometimes this is a result of simply not taking the time to call me. Other times it's been confusion between their staff because they keep their schedule with paper and pencil. If you want to use such a poor scheduling method, the least you could do is keep track of changes and have a method to let your clients know with an opportunity to cancel. You're using a 1980s organizational system with terrible 2020s customer service. I've received zero offers for refund (I've asked) nor remorse from the person who runs the place, but many apologies from staffers who can't do anything about the situation. I was told to the equivalent of 'you get what you get and don't get upset.' I know you're a school but you're still charging money for a service. Try acting like it. After too many experiences like this I am tired of paying with my money and time for disrespect and bad massages. read more

It was my first time there and I understood there would be multiple massages happening in an open space-- I didn't know what vibe to expect with that. Turned out to be very positive all around- Respectful, professional... quiet relaxing space, ambient music, dimly lit, the sheet provided to robe yourself before/during/after was generously large (a dark queen size sheet maybe?) so I always felt appropriately covered. I heard about these massages from a coworker and figured I'd try it out. I left a voicemail and they called me back a day later and told me what time slots were available for the days I specified and from there I booked an appointment. I had Rachel, who was so sweet and made sure I was comfortable the entire time, especially since it was my first time getting a real full-body massage. She made sure I was properly covered by the sheet the entire time, which made me feel comfortable since you get the massage in a room with everyone else. If you are considering pursuing an education in massage therapy I would actively encourage against The Massage School. The core staff of Alexei, Teeka, and Scott made the program borderline unbearable. I personally dealt with verbal abuse from Scott and was met with apathy by the rest of the staff which led me to feel unsupported and uncomfortable for the rest of the program. The education was also lackluster and the instructors often gave conflicting information in lessons. Many of my classmates sustained injuries in their hands and bodies due to not being taught proper body mechanics at the beginning of the course. Additionally, during the global pandemic of COVID 19 the staff abandoned my class and ceased communications despite being contacted multiple times by multiple students. We have many concerns due to the lack of hygiene in the building and the idea of returning to a place without proper ventilation. Overall, the only redeeming qualities to the school were two of the instructors late in the program Ilir Ymeri and Angela Powers. read more

$30 for an hour massage? I can now afford to incorporate massage into my well-being routine sans financial guilt! I have had really amazing experiences here and love the space. Its a low-lit room with many tables and you are paired with a student before entering the space. You will be in a room with others getting massages as well, but there is NOT a teacher at the front of the room etc. You are given a sheet and disrobe in a private changing stall. It is quiet and relaxing and I am grateful for this resource in Boston. Please note, that these -are students- and that if you have serious health issues, that you should be seeing a licensed body work therapist. If you are in general good physical and mental health, you still need to go in with an open mind and heart to your student and speak up if something isn't working for you. It's a good exercise for your boundaries plus giving the student a quite literally, hands on experience of interacting with all sorts of bodies and preferences. To protect the integrity of the students' practice, as well as your own health, you have to be the one to take the responsibility of working with a student for a massage. Also the music is always amazing and I am very impressed with nearly all of the students I've worked with. Also, Scott usually works the desk and he's hilarious. This place is a hidden gem. I come whenever I can to unwind. There are some seriously good hands here that rival the best professional massages I've had. Not all the students are at that level, so you might have to try a few times before finding someone you really like. But at $30 it's affordable enough to try someone else if you don't like your first therapist. Having said that, I've never had a bad massage here and wager you won't either. To get an appointment, call and leave a message. Don't bother coming if you are or have recently been sick or injured. I've seen people turned away, so you are forewarned. The best students here are able to work on specific problems you're having and dissolve all your knots. Worst case scenario, you get a nice relaxation massage. Once upon a time on a seemingly ordinary Saturday an overworked, overstressed 27 year old male wandered into a massage school in the South End with an open mind and hardly any expectations to boot. To put it bluntly, the mini-odyssey of emotion I experienced at this hidden gem was nothing short of euphoric. Consequently, I felt an obligation to share my experience with the world as eloquently as my limited linguistic abilities would allow. From the moment I descended from the sidewalk to the dark lobby, I knew I was in for a sweet treat when the elderly sage manning the front desk asked my girlfriend and I to skip all the paperwork and sign on the dotted line - no BS, my kind of my joint. From there, It was off with the clothes and on to the golden throne off godly goodness. Disregarding the fact that I was sharing a room resembling a bomb shelter with 20 other people (could've been dead or alive), my aspiring masseuse quickly assuaged my fears with hot oil and a soft whisper. I hesitate to use the word guru, but let's just say my masseuse has fingers fit for the Pharaohs of Egypt. In those 60 minutes I experienced every emotion on the spectrum of human feeling. Hyperbole aside, It was similar to the first time I watched Forest Gump or the first time I awkwardly swayed with a girl at a church dance(leave some room for the Holy Spirit). From gripping sadness to blissful joy, I felt like a little leaguer who dropped his snow cone in the dirt, then cracked his first home run over the fence. The swedes would be proud - minus the thin air of the alps. My bag lunch of emotions was fueled by the ballads of beauty echoing throughout the dark dungeon. At one point I thought Morgan Freeman was going to come out from behind the curtains to narrate the details of my massage accompanied by cherubs harmonizing with flute melodies. I also think I heard that song by Sarah Mcglaughlin on that commercial where she makes me feel bad I have never donated to battered dogs or animal shelters - tears were shed, it was beautiful. I had a fantastic experience. Went in with semi-low expectations and was really impressed with the quality. Customer service was great from the moment I called to make an appointment. The staff is very casual and laid back and the office is clean and bright, which made me feel relaxed and comfortable. Got there on time, paid $30 upfront, sat in the waiting room and was called into the massage room almost immediately by Mike (I was asked when I made the appointment if I had a preference for a male or female therapist) - he was really sweet, asked me if I was new to massage (no), what areas I wanted him to focus on, and what pressure (all the standard questions). Mike lead me to a changing room to undress and wrap a clean sheet around myself. Then he brought me in the communal massage room, where there were 4 or 5 tables (my sister was getting a massage on the other side of the room). The room was very quiet, save a few moments of chatter between other therapists and clients, but that didn't disturb me. Relaxing music played and within moments I felt as if I was in a private room. Mike gave me exactly what I wanted - perfect pressure and hit all of the spots I asked him to. He even did a little energy work - placing his hands on my back and head for a few moments, sometimes adding pressure, and slowing removed them. The hypoallergenic oil used could have been a little more slippery - at times it felt kinda dry - but that's my only "complaint". Both my sister and I felt like the massage was the perfect length - every time we feared it was about to end the therapists kept going, which made it feel like more than an hour. At the end I was brought to change back into my clothes and fill out a comment form. I gave Mike a standard $5 tip, but if I could have afforded more I would have given him at least $10. My sister felt the same about her therapist (Ginny). Afterwards we both raved about how relaxed and relieved we felt. I will definitely return - $35 for an hour massage from compassionate therapists is a fantastic deal. * Be sure to bring a reusable bottle filled with water to rehydrate - not sure if they have any there to drink because I wasn't offered it, but there may be a fountain in the building. read more

$30 for a 60 min massage by students. It can't get any better than this. I'm a student myself so I appreciate a good deal when I find one. Although the massages are performed by the students, they are still really good, considering the setting that you're in. I called to make an appointment. I wish that they had online scheduling, however, I assume that they will have that option in the near future. The venue was very minimalistic and clean, which is all that matters to me. The massages are done in groups. You go and change in a changing room and are brought to the common area where a bunch of massage tables are set up. This didnt bother me. The lights were dimmed and there was music playing. Once I was on the table and closed my eyes, I forgot about everyone else who was half naked lying near me. The place is kind of in an alley type place which looked a little sketchy but nonetheless, I'm glad there's a location in Boston. This review is for the Boston location. The Massage School was a great deal. If you're reading this, you have to set your expectations. It is a school, not Canyon Ranch. Because of that, it's only $30 for an hour. I was able to schedule an appointment ahead of time. The school is on a street you typically wouldn't go down unless you needed to. Here is the process: Everyone with the time slot sits in the waiting room until the student comes to get you. You are given a black sheet and led through the open room, passing everyone's massage table, to a fitting room to get to your comfort level and wrap a sheet around you. Then you walk across the room to your table with just this sheet around you. You can't be shy. And then you have to strategically get on your table with the sheet still on you. The massage was great. Mine lasted easily longer than an hour. It was almost as good as one done by a pro, at a fraction of the price. And they are vey appreciative of small tips. I will definitely be back. read more

Great therapeutic massage! Many student clinics pull the relaxation massages only card... But this one worked with my individual needs, and tailored my bodywork appropriately. After a 16hr road trip, I had one target area in which I need major work. The therapist (Sam) did a great job, and gave me tips & suggestions for things we could do at the next massage. I will definitely be back to what I'm calling, 'the massage dungeon.' Well there were no chains or dragons, but you have to walk down some steps into a rather dim entry point (I went at night) to check-in. The bottom line is that you're going to get an hour massage for $30. This is a bargain as this will typically cost you $85+. From my experience, and being a Med student, it's all the same. Granted this is a school, and the therapists are training, but you still are going to have an experienced person manipulate your body. The whole point of massage is to get you into labored breathing, this activates your vagus nerve and reduces your cortisol levels. At the $30 price point, clients can incorporate good massages in their lives leading to greater well being and reduced stress. read more

Amazing massage--within the top 3 massages I've ever had! I was a bit caught off guard initially by the set up--they take about 5-6 clients at a time into one large room, where all the clients go into separate stalls, undress, and wrap themselves in a sheet. From there everyone goes to side by side tables, receives an hour massage and then head back to the stalls to get dressed. It was a little weird at first, but then I received such an incredible massage that the weirdness is gone and I will ABSOLUTELY go back. And for $30 per massage? I found this place here on Yelp. I was skeptical going because, well, it's a school and the fact people keep saying its $30 over and over all I could think was "I'm going to get a $30 massage" NOPE. It was great! I'm in construction and I've been in a ton of pain so I needed something. I called this afternoon at 2:00, asked to set up an appointment and that anytime after 4 works for me. I got "we have 6 or 8 available" "tonight!?" "tonight" Perfect I walked into the place filled out (signed) some paperwork and sat down in a lobby of about 10 other people. 6 came and we all filed in together (I heard "group" and thought I was going to walk into people already laying down. Not the case). Dressed down and wrapped myself up in a sheet and off I went! Once I laid down I couldn't tell there was a single person in there. The "student" I got was excellent! She was soft spoken, focused exactly where I told her I was having problems, made me feel completely relaxed and applied the perfect pressure. I normally pay triple that for a massage and I end up leaving more tense because I paid $100 for a $30 massage. But here was the complete opposite. Before I left I already set up my next appointment. My only problem is, what happens when she graduates!?! Am I going to have to walk into another student that maybe doesn't know what they're doing!? What if it's not as good?!? They were very nice on the phone and professional in person. Because it's a school, you're in a dark room with 15-20 other people. A wonderful hidden surprise in the South End of Boston! I heard about the Massage School's student clinic from a co-worker and finally as able to go yesterday. For a 1 hour full body massage, you can't beat the price of $30. My student masseuse was very nice and was able to increase her massage pressure when I told her my feedback. She was great at draping the sheet to make sure I was always covered throughout the massage. My favorite part was that the massage table was heated which is great in the winter time! I went there 3 times- 2 bad massages and 1 really good one. @$30+$10 (tip) per massage, i spent $120 for 3 massages, an hour long each. A massage with Song left me with a hurting neck immediately after the massage. The Massage School does not allow you to book the same student more than 3 times. Of those 3 times if the student you booked has to leave then theyll find you someone else who may be horrible. Yes we went there because it was a "deal" but if its only a win win situation for the massage school and they don't allow to schedule with particular students then it ends up being a really bad deal and a low quality experience. Great place for a cheap massage. Therapists-in-training vary in expertise but are good for the most part. My only real complaint is that they really need to have water available. Even if it's just supplying cups in the bathroom, it's important to drink water after a massage and if you have to drive or walk home without drinking water after a massage, the toxins released by the massage won't be flushed out and will be hard on the kidneys. I know you can't put in a water fountain, but cups in the bathroom or water for sale would make sense at a massage place. read more

Let me share a secret with you. Boston's cheapest massage... its even cheaper than Chinatown. Its $30 for a full hour! Can't beat that price!! You have to call to make an appointment. Usually nobody picks up but if you leave a voicemail, you will get a call back. This is not some fancy spa where you can pick a time. They have fixed times for massages so you have to be able to make it to one of the time slots. I walked over a mile to get here from the T. The closest T stops are the orange line (Tufts Medical Center) and green line (Arlington), and its still over a one mile walk. Alternatively, you can take the silver line to get you closer. The massage school wasn't that hard to find, there was a big sign outside. After going in, I paid $30 (credit cards are accepted), signed a waiver, and received a big black sheet. I was informed of whom my masseuse would be (you can choose male or female but its not guaranteed). Then my masseuse came out and called my name. She led me into a large room that has about 10 ish massage tables. This is no fancy spa, so there are no walls or shower curtains to divy up the massage beds. There is a bathroom, as well as individual changing stalls. My masseuse gave me a basket to put all my belongings in and led me to the massage table. I saw people skillfully jumping onto the bed with the sheet wrapped around them, without exposing themselves. I had wrapped myself too tightly in the sheet and when I got onto the table, I wasn't able to unwrap myself. My masseuse kindly helped me unwrap myself and began the massage. From that point on, the people around me didn't matter. I was in heaven. There was soothing music played in the background, I was in my own world. The massage wasn't bad, it really depends on whom your masseuse is. Mine did a good job but could have done a better job of massaging some of my kinks. At the end of the massage. I went back to the changing room with my basket, put on my clothes and tipped my masseuse. Please tip your masseuse! There are slips of paper for you to rate your masseuse if you want. read more

I had an appointment scheduled for today, and I came down with a cold yesterday. I was hoping to feel better, and started to, but toward the end of the day I started feeling sick again. I understood the 24 hour cancellation policy, but when it was explained to me I was never told that I would need to pay if I cancelled later than that. I was leaving a message, and the man picked up the phone and I told him that I was ill and needed to cancel, and that I was sorry it was so last minute. He immediately became frustrated and rude, saying things like "you were sick yesterday and you are calling today at 2:30pm on the day of your appointment? Next time you need to call the day you start to get sick." He then proceeded to tell me that I owed $30.00. I explained that I wasn't aware I would owe the price, and that if that was the case I would come anyway. He then told me that I was forbidden to come to the clinic if I was sick. I wanted to reschedule, and told him that I was sorry and didn't realize it would be such a big deal and since it seemed to be, and that I would come for my appointment. He repeatedly told me I was not allowed in the clinic if I was sick, then told me he would cancel the appointment, and that "I was not to call the clinic again." I understand that cancelling last minute is frustrating, and I feel badly that I was doing that. Especially because that might deprive a student of an experience. However, I was sick, and I wasn't sure how things would turn out. I was so shocked by how rude this man was, and how he turned me away for life because I needed to reschedule due to illness. I was hoping to feel better today, and thought I was, but then things started going downhill later in the day and I felt it best to go home. This is not how you treat people in customer service. Confusingly bad -- appalling -- customer service from Scott Until yesterday, I really liked this place, and hoped to make it an at least monthly routine. I've had some great massages and some disappointing ones there, but that makes sense for students, and the price is right, especially since regular professional massages are out of the budget for me. However, I had a bad experience with a massage yesterday, enough so that a staff member (I believe her name was Mara) noticed and asked what she could do to help, and listened. She was great, she went above and beyond. On my way out, Scott, who runs the desk and I believe is the manager or owner, asked if it was anything he should know about, so I gave him a summary (probably more rambling than I intended, but still short, maybe two sentences). All I expected was an "I'm sorry you feel this way" or something to that effect. Instead, he talked about the fact that they're students, you can't expect them to know how to react to every situation yet, etc. I didn't disagree with much of what he was saying, but I thought that he had wanted the information about why I was disappointed by the student, since he had asked. I told him as much, and he doubled down, elaborating on their lack of experience. Part of what had upset me was the fact that the student seemed very freaked out by the fact that I cried a little on the massage table, and seemed to be trying to get me to stop for his own sake, rather than mine. I had already told Scott this, and so when he went on about them not being experienced I said something along the lines of "I don't expect perfect professionalism, I just hoped for a little basic human kindness." That really upset him, and he told me I was attacking his student's character (I didn't intend to, I just wanted to express my concern about his behavior). I told him that I had hoped to become a regular (I've been there five times) but now I had concerns, not because of the student but because he was reacting so defensively after he had asked for the information. I don't know what I did to merit that other than take up more of his time than he wanted and tell him true, mostly politely-worded things he didn't want to hear; until the end of the conversation I was shaky but moderately quiet. I stood to leave but tried to restate why I was disappointed before I went. He interrupted me a few times until I said, "I'll leave as soon as I finish my sentence." At that point I was speaking at regular volume, rather than the semi-hushed tones of the waiting room of the massage studio, and I tried to tell him once more that his behavior was much more concerning than the student's. I admit I wasn't exactly concise, but it was a regular run-on sentence, nothing out of the ordinary for someone tired and frustrated.
