And I called one other company for a second bid. David showed up in time for our appointment, and his explanation of the problem (80 year old mortar in our brick house was falling out). The previous owner had gotten some of it repaired. That mortar was failing, too. I was particularly concerned because one pillar that carries a heavy load was cracked so badly (see photo) that you could see daylight through it from top to bottom. David explained why it had failed, and how the repair work someone had done years ago made matters worse. His bid that was about the same price as the other firm, but his explanation -- and the bid itself -- were so clear that D. Masonry was my obvious choice. He provided me with proof of insurance, too, a request the other company ignored. They lived up to my high expectations. Watching them work, I realized that tuck pointing is a highly skilled craft, practically an art form. They took the time to mix and try a range of mortar colors. With their help, we selected the one they advised. Now that the new mortar has completely dried, I can see it is a perfect color match. The pillar I was so nervous about? They elaborately jacked up and stabilized things, so they could remove the pillar, which they disassembled completely, laying out all the bricks (with all the old mortar removed), so they could put them back exactly as they were, only sturdy now, and good as new. Masonry repairs -- done well -- simply disappear when the work is done, right? As long as I own this house, my gratitude for this job-well-done will live on.

We hired Stucco and Stone Masons, a company we found via Thumbtack. Their company had good…read morerecommendations, were very prompt in their response, came to our home for a quote within 2 days, and could start right away. Work included: 1) Floor leveling (our floors were very uneven!) 2) Tile installation 1100 sq. ft (12X12 travertine squares, arabesque travertine tile, 3X5ft subway tile shower + mosaic travertine shower floor tiles) 3) Plaster wall repair in our basement (7 exterior walls) To give you an idea of the VALUE this company brought to our renovation: We had received four quotes JUST for the tile installation that were between $13,000-$15,000, which did *not* include floor leveling or plaster wall repairs! These companies/individuals were booked for months in advance and their turnaround for completion would have been 4-6 weeks. This would have severely delayed our project. Filiberto (goes by Beto) and his two sons were very friendly and honest. They quoted us $8,000 for #1-3 work above, and said they would be finished within 3 weeks. They WOULD have been finished before that 3-week timeframe had we not miscalculated the amount of tile they would need for the bathroom floor. They were very understanding of our mistake and returned as soon as the rest of the tile arrived to finish the project. Beto's crew of four men arrived every day around 9am, and worked around the clock - even SATURDAYS! They were extremely courteous, professional and hard working. Some days they did not leave until 8pm! I have never met such a dedicated, hard-working group of people. If we had questions/concerns, they were very open to resolving the matter quickly. We are incredibly pleased with their work. Our basement looks AMAZING!! The sand colored tile and the plaster wall repairs has really brightened the space. We are planning to hire them again to repave our driveway and front sidewalk/steps in the spring. We hope you consider them for your future concrete, plaster and or tile projects! We walked through all exteriors and he basically said nearly every wall needed full skimming. Even for walls with just a few tiny hairline cracks.
