Bottom Line: Cheap carbs & caffeine on the south side of town. Top Line: Blueberry donut and cinnamon roll, plus medium size cuppa joe ran $3.40'ish. So economical breakfasting. While the blueberry donut had good berry flavor and the roll had a modicum of cinnamon taste in it, the predominant taste was sweetness. Lots & lots of sugar showing up for your morning jack-me-up. Coffee was a shade on the bitter side, with not a lot of richness to counter it. A bit thin on flavor overall. But it did have caffeine so it's still passable. Premises were clean and bright. Counter help was friendly and good at their job. Lots of drive-thru and walk-in traffic, so they're doing something right. Our family has a weekly tradition. Every Sunday we stop at a local donut shop and splurge on a donut and kolache. Being new to an area is difficult because you have to find new places for your normal tradition. We did a search and found several different choices. Empire was our first choice since it is on the way to church. All I can say is WOW! We are so glad this place was our first choice! Since we had plenty of time we decided to eat inside. At first glance the inside is a typical donut place with a few tables, coolers stocked with various drinks, and the display case. However, once you are close to the case you can see the delicious difference that sets this place apart. Their selection of kolaches is vastly superior. Yes, they have the typical with cheese, with jalapeño, smaller ones, big ones, etc. however, they also have several other flavors available to tease your tastebuds. They have several levels of spice or heat. Next the donuts. The bear claw is absolutely divine. It is filled with a pie filling and therefore has that slight tart to the apples and the perfect amount of cinnamon. Now, while I was looking at the vast selection of donuts I came across one that looked different. I was informed that it is the crumb donut (popularly known as the crack donut because it is so addictive.) With a slight crunch and a sweet buttery flavor, it is easy to see why it has the nickname! Our children LOVED the fact that they had blue icing and sprinkles on their donuts. Upon talking with the employees of the store, you can definitely tell there is pride for the store. The place was definitely clean and neatly organized as well. We will definitely continue giving Empire our family's business! I encourage you to stop in, try the kolaches, and the crack donut.
