Every school and campus has its charm and in this center, it is not too far from many midtown hotspots after a good day of work and night classes. The availability of resources online and their library is just amazing and so much perks they give you when being a student--just have to explore and ask regarding their services! Big thing with this school--NETWORK!!! Don't expect career services to connect you with something that would hand you the job--NETWORK. And if you know people, connect them within the alumni and career services section. It does not hurt. Also know a working student resume is much more qualified than a full time student resume and I believe I was successful in connecting my current job and career with my major and so thankful that I had the chance to be in this school making it possible for a potential new beginning.

Unlike in college where your grades are based on homework and papers, in most classes in law school, your grade is determined by one exam. In addition, the professors won't hold your hands. You're in a cavernous lecture room with 100+ other students. After fucking up on the LEDP final exam during the fall semester of my 1L year, I was on academic probation. With the help of Allie Robbins, who's an amazing woman, I fought my way out of it. In the fall of my 2L year, I had a class with Ruthann Robson, a dingbat who can't teach. The only reason she has a job is because she's in a relationship with another faculty member (whom I won't name). In the spring of my 2L year, I took a mediation class with a witch named Beryl Blaustone. At first glance, she seemed like a sweet old lady. However, after a month, I saw her true colors. In the spring semester of my 3L year, I took a mandatory course called Core Doctrine. The course allegedly prepares you for the bar exam. At the time I took it, it was taught by shysters known as Pieper bar review. I didn't learn jack shit in that class. All they did was regurgitate rules and stupid mnemonics. I got a C in that class. Fortunately, the Piepers no longer teach Core Doctrine. The NY bar exam was a doozy. I got massacred during my first two attempts (February 2014, July 2014). I was so traumatized that I nearly gave up on becoming a lawyer. Long story short, after a few life-changing events, I eventually got back on my feet and passed on my third attempt (July 2017). And contrary to popular belief, you don't need to spend thousands of dollars on a bar prep course to pass the bar. I took Barbri in February 2014 and July 2014. In July 2017, I self-studied (if you want specific tips on how to tackle the bar, send me a private message). At CUNY, all of the students look out for each other, regardless of their skin color, religion, or sexual orientation. Back when I attended CUNY, I was in a clique. We studied together and went bar hopping during our rare free time. I miss those days. There are many people at CUNY who have your best interests at heart- Allie, Cheryl Howard, Victor Goode, Shirley Lung, and Rebecca Bratspies. Unfortunately, a few bad apples spoil the bunch. There are quite a few professors who either can't teach or get sadistic pleasure from handing out bad grades. And speaking of, if your GPA is less than a 2.5 then welcome to academic probation. The GPA requirement is intentionally set high so people who the school feels won't pass the bar are weeded out. Like a few other people said, the building is nice and immaculate. The neighborhood is somewhat desolate, though only one stop on the E and M lines away from Manhattan. There are a few decent dining options in the nearby Citibank building (DO NOT eat at the American Hero deli that's across the street from CUNY). CUNY is a school that emphasizes social justice. If you want to become a lawyer who defends the oppressed then CUNY is a halfway decent option. If you just want to make money, consider a career other than practicing law. Speaking from experience, it's not worth the stress.

The school takes your money and on day one of the class you are unable to withdraw without losing it. The workload is extremely intense and most business professors are not interested in helping the students. There are many technical requirements that are not posted in advance and you are left on your own struggling to figure it all out. I have found that many professors are highly unorganized, unable to spend time helping and don't take the time to learn the course they are teaching or learn English/proper grammar. Currently, I am taking a Statistics class. I just spent 8.5 hours completing the first test had a technical error and failed to count all my answers. Instead of reviewing my test and the answers, my lazy professor's response was "Just take it again." Sure, I have another 8.5 hours to redo this! Thanks for nothing. Also, the technical requirements for this homework are incompatible with my computer's software. I am 6 classes away from graduating and fear this is the end of my road here. Very depressed. Lots of time and money are wasted at SPS. I am beyond disgusted with this institution!

I have been interviewed by large companies for entry level positions in customer service/business development nobody judged my worth based on the degree. Most of the professors are good. They also have virtual extra curricular activities which allows you to make connections and network. The bad: I did not receive adequate preparation for an actual job in the media industry. I did do a journalism internship, but the school did not focus enough on teaching students to use specific styles of writing. The career center should be more familiar with what types of jobs alumni end up taking. The financial aid department needs to be on top of their game. Suggestions for the school: The curriculum would have been more useful if we had classes on topics such as a 3 credit course on SEO (instead of one week unit within a course) or a 9 credit concentration on web design with at least one or two coding courses instead of a 3 credit course that barely scratches the surface. Spend more time developing an alumni network and make sure career services and financial aid are on top of their game.

PEPM, EMPA, etc. The current (109th) mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, is an alumnus of its MIA program. I have taken some classes here and attended events here. Depends on the size and content of your class, it is either seminar or lecture style. You will meet some really interesting colleagues or classmates here as most people bring in diverse backgrounds of professions and interests. Out of the several professors that I have approached, all of them are responsive to inquiries via email. What I really like about the School is that many professors are practitioners and prominent leaders in their fields. The School also houses several centers including Center for Development Economics and Policy and Center on Global Energy Policy. Thus, it hosts many interesting events on a weekly basis. Definitely take advantage of its events as it often brings interesting speakers. Also, SIPA catering is one of the best within the Columbia University community. I would rank SIPA catering second in terms of its culinary art, immediately after Columbia Journalism School. Not 5 stars for me because the building itself is kinda "bland" when compared with other schools and buildings on campus. Also when you enter from the 118th gate, you are entering the 4th floor. If you are coming in from the central campus side (117th) gate, you are entering its 6th floor. The building itself can be confusing to navigate.

I highly recommend this major, it gives you plentiful helpings of both arts and liberal arts education, with plenty of room for electives within your subjects of choice. I've always thought that the professors are what make or break a class, and the professors here are wonderful. One the whole, enthusiastic, original thinkers. It is rare to be challenged without the motivation of fear or strict discipline....most people have never been challenged in this way, and sadly, they can't even recognize its value when they see it. You will like Lang if: You value thinking critically and deeply. You will have these needs met here. You want your classes to sort of blend together across subjects. You want to study science in an integrative, practically applied manner. The Interdisciplinary Science program here is one of the best. You want to be challenged....not to follow strict rules, but to dive more deeply into a topic. You want a more personal atmosphere with your teachers and classmates. You will hate Lang if: You hate reading and writing. You are athletic outside of yoga and dance. (seriously, sometimes the doors feel too heavy for me to open :P) You learn best through rote memorization. You hate explaining yourself. You hate class discussions. Lang myths: Everyone is a pretentious hipster...no! Lang is all about looking past appearances. Like a person's clothing. I have met kids who reek of having too much privilege. I have also met kids here who are kind, smart, and interesting- great friend material. There's a lot of creativity floating around here...don't get all sensitive if it comes out in dress! Everybody smokes.... kind of. There are a lot of smokers here. And as a non-smoker, I think its pretty stupid. But no ones going to look down on you for not smoking. In fact, they may wish they could do the same. :) Are there imperfections in the way it operates? Of course. This school maintains itself on our financial privilege. This is more of a problem with American education on the whole. So the tuition is steep, yes. But it's kind of like this: if you know you will be in debt after paying for this school, why is that application even in the mail? I wish people would stop talking as if this school put you in debt. No....you put yourself in debt! If this school will put you in debt, please don't apply..... your impending fees will cast a long shadow over what would be an enriching, life-changing experience.
