I received my BSN (bachelors in nursing) here, so I did the professional / clinical phase of the nursing program (full time) here as well as several of the pre-reqs for it part-time so I have spent some time here, unfortunately. I say that is unfortunate because the entire institution is a bit of a scheme. They take every penny they can from you, I had to fight to get some of my pre-reqs transferred over and they wouldn't accept several of them because they said it was not comparable although the descriptions were nearly identical. It is worth mentioning that they recently have started a paradigm shift in administration and protocols, so that gives me hope that things here will improve. Although one of these changes is getting rid of the capstone rotation (ie nurse 1-1 preceptor ship at end of program and the one that really matters the most) and replaced with lab simulations and group clinicals, which I do not approve of but at least I was the last class to get the real preceptorship. Would I gamble it, knowing what I know now, with nearly forty thousand dollars a year? Not likely, but it would be interesting to see if the changes will improve or worsen their standing. The new dean of nursing seems to want to change things for the better, so I cautiously have my hopes up. I can look past that, what I can not look past is the attitude of the administration and staff here (NOT referring to the professors, they are the only saving grace this school has other than being close to an empanada truck and the newly built market across the street). I am referring to the nursing "advisors" who I can not even refer to as not being able to care less about you because that would implicate some level of neutrality or apathy; even worse, in reality several of them have more vitriol toward you than apathy. Not only that, but the only thing they are consistent in is their inconsistency and lack of communication. I don't think I can count high enough to document how many times students would miss a deadline, a class, an event, a registration, a requirement, an-ANTHING because they do not communicate it. They don't tell you what needs to be done, when or how. When you ask them they religiously tell you to ask your colleagues / other students, then when you get misinformation from people who, themselves hearing it by word of mouth, they literally yell at you for not knowing something that is their responsibility to inform you on. I honestly don't get it - they have Blackboard, it seems like it would cut out a lot of the back and forth to just make one CLEAR, COHESIVE and STANDARD schedule of requirements, resources and instructions and post it for all students to have access to. To demonstrate my point, I remember one time I went to them in 1st or 2nd level nursing program about classes because there was some confusion about signing up for odd-number clinical with odd-number lecture sections or something. The advisor saw me reading the schedule on her door -- said nothing. After several minutes of planning my schedule I asked her a question about it and she said "oh those are out of date, they have been for over six months". Then WHY ARE THEY STILL ON YOUR DOOR (facing the hall for every student to see and refer to as an "official" source of information)? Literally every semester there were always, always, always, always several issues with clinical rotations. Either they have not been able to get enough locations signed up so students don't get placed (and thus either get held back or have to watch videos in school of procedures that we are paying 38k/year for hands-on experience), or they don't have enough instructors, or the instructors don't show up and fall off the planet, etc. I think you get the idea, and look I'm not salty. I graduated dual honors cum laude and was in the top 5% of my class but if you're considering LIU nursing I think you should be aware of their past struggles. The only saving grace this university has is the professors, who are the only reason they got the stars they have (if I could rate the professors on Yelp independently I would give them 5 stars). The professors here really truly do care. Several will give you their personal number if you have any problems or questions, or make themselves available to you. Honestly I would have a hard time finding a better group of people and respectable professionals. /END rant read more

My wife has been enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at the Long Island University for the last few years. Due to pregnancy-related health issues, she's had to withdraw from class last summer and it was agreed with the school that she would be allowed to drop without any issues. For the last half of the year, she's been getting notices that her tuition is overdue. She's reached out and talked to Jasmine B and Julien G to make sure that her withdrawal is properly reflected. They have neither been responsive nor at all responsible in making sure that the tuition payment requests are cancelled. On top of the constant notices that remind her that she needs to pay (which was agreed that she wouldn't have to) she is now worried that her account may get locked, preventing her from registering for classes next semester. The lack of communication and responsibility from the school is truly mind-blowing. This is academic bureaucracy at it's worst. Since her emails do not seem important enough for them to adequately and timely respond, I are posting this publicly with the sincere hope that the school will take her requests seriously. read more

Let me begin by saying that my profs were generally kind & tried. I don't blame them. But I don't feel that way abt the admins of my program/LIU. Coming to this school the worst working/academic decision of your life as a New Yorker, and it's kind of infuriating to read reviews based on pools and residential facilities. If you want to be employed/have a serious career after grad, DON'T COME HERE. You aren't going to college for a pool or a fun art dept. - college is an expensive investment in your future and what happens AFTER you graduate. Want to work in NYC in your field of choice? Want to network with institutions that won't make you hate your field? Want supportive career placement? Want to have a resume taken seriously as you apply for work around NYC? Then DON'T GO to LIU or its affiliates, for any major/level. I have to wonder where the high raters are working now. Nursing, pharma, English, education (my field)-if this school is on your resume, you will be passed over or only get horrible jobs. This school is an academic blotch & a financial disaster. If you take your education or career seriously, GO SOMEPLACE ELSE. I should have known something was wrong IMMEDIATELY when the MSed listings site had an addition mistake falsely advertising the credits required to graduate. (It lists 33; it is actually 36. It's like a high school student designed the site.) More importantly, the credits required to graduate plus fieldwork hours are actually closer to 47 or 48. Other schools in this city? 40-45. Other schools may require you to teach anywhere from 40 full days to 400 hours, spread out and guided through. You must teach a full semester in this school, 5 days a week. Have a job? QUIT IT! Other schools let you stagger days. The classes cost as much as NYU, but make no mistake, the degree you're getting will be worth less than that of a community college in this city. Remarkably,for such an awful school with crap reputation if you want to work in NY/NJ,the programs are designed so that the courseload semester to semester is impossible to plan out or finish.They don't have an up to date course bulletin,don't list fieldwork hours ANYWHERE on the course study website,& you won't know what you've gotten yourself into until you've been there at least a semester & PAID FOR IT. That's the trick. There's continual staff turnover. The school administration is shady and tired--they want your money, not to deal with you when something is amiss. Have a question about planning for the key semester of clinical work? Need some advisement? Have a financial issue? Prepare to be passed along an email chain of people that seem purposefully incompetent for the next few months--they do not want you to figure out this school is a reputational and academic dump. Poke around the school of ed's site and you'll see there's no info about courses accessible, no discussion of student teaching requirements, hostile advisors, disgusting facilities, and most of all, AWFUL tuition fees...with no good employment prospects. There's no post-grad career guidance, and no worthwhile connections to good schools in NYC or anywhere else. You'll have to take off at least a full semester to practice student clinical work, where a lot of schools spread that out over 2 semesters. Is your job flexible enough for courses that require that, or up to 60 hours of fieldwork in a semester? The program is so small you'll HAVE to cram certain courses together or you won't be able to take them, because they're only offered in one season. In other words,these programs are designed for you to fail. In brief,this craphole/its admins have deep contempt for its students. This is as wise an academic decision as a degree mill. It's insane program design, horrible workload, no flexibility, no guidance, no networking opportunities. You'll be unemployed & in debt if you come here. This school is for desperate losers/the benignly ignorant only; I was both. If you really want to work in education/this city,go to Hunter,go to Queens College,Fordham, Baruch, NYU-take out loans & carefully plan obtaining your degree with any OTHER school and make sure you know participating fieldwork sites, hours, credits, and student field (or for ed students, teaching) hours are required to graduate before you put money down.Look at the list of participating field site organizations. Long Island University was a terrible choice. Not only after graduation I couldn't get a job but I ended up with 100K debt for a useless degree. I ended up doing something completely different. I was once in pharmacy school and to be honest the university has some of the lousiest professors that either can't teach, can't speak English properly and many underhand dealings just ask Dean Cicero who was once there and left from school to school. The professors of Long Island university went on strike. That alone, speaks volumes of how the professors are treated with no dignity. I am first witness to observe the level of favoritism to certain groups of ethnic students. I am amazed the level of cheating that goes in the classes amongst proctors checking the classrooms. I regret going to this school, and so should you think 3X not 1X before signing up to this lousy school. The president of the school is amongst the highest paid in the nation. There was no help/tutoring in professional academia. Many of the professors had left as well because of the level of nonsense that was going on. The job placement is a joke. I couldn't get a job for 2 years. The school will leave you penniless. The professors have an attitude. Dean Cicero is a very moody individual. Don't ruin your precious time. You will regret it. I am attending here for my grad program & although the school is unorganized. The professors do care about you. It is structured like many other School Psychology programs but I will say that so far - I have learned so much. The program entirely is one of the best I've heard of so far compared to my other friends in there programs at Fordham, Hofstra, or Brooklyn College. Look at the hike through out the years The break down is per credit 96 - 500 97 - 600 98 - 700 99 - 800 00 - 900 Do you see the pattern? Now they decide to go flat rate, which is $17,000 per semester (that doesn't include school books and fees). The concept is simple; they expect a student to take on 21+ credits, so chances are he/she will fail at least 2 classes. So the student would need to retake the classes. Make sense? As a student here I appreciate the quality of professors that we have at our disposal. The tuition at the university is not exactly budget friendly but I do feel like you get what you pay for. Yet, my experience here as a graduate student differs greatly from those pursuing an undergraduate degree. My advice: "CUNY is a much more affordable option" for those of you looking to invest 4 years of tuition into this place. My graduate program has small classes, I definitely feel as though I'm getting my money's worth (as a cheapo I just wish it was half the price). Recently there was a lock out as the administration Is refusing to provide better compensation and benefits for its facility. That has left the school without its unionized facility and subsequently students are nervous about pending and upcoming graduation. as tMy first class of the semester was absent of a professor so that was a blind slap in the face. Now considering the university had no issues with charging me 150 for late fees prior to the start of the semester and was unprepared to educate me on the first day of school I would say my appeal for this school has dramatically declined as the administrations better interest does not align with its students need for success. watching the play out of events with the strike overall, knowing the facility is great at their jobs and students pay high tuition I'm generally displeased with the services provided. read more

LIU BROOKLYN is the most unorganized school ever. I would not recommend this school to anybody who has better school options. I have attended LIU for 4 years and always encountered a problem. If it's not financial aid its with classes. I have finished my schools Nursing Program MAY 2021, but I cant receive my degree because I am missing 1 credit. Prior to my last semester, I"ve sent several emails to my counselors to make sure i'm not missing any credits, but I never get a response. So I thought I was not missing any credits. Later on in the semester I started getting messages from LIU graduation stating Im missing credits. I started calling the school and emailing the nursing counselor but guess what NO Response. I finally got a response the day after graduation. The miscommunication here at LIU has been mentally and emotionally draining. This back and forth and inaccurate information has negatively impacted my mental health. I have assiduously worked towards this degree, yet LIU refuses to honor my hard work and perseverance by handing me my degree. As a result, of these injustices, I have not been able to sit for my boards. LIU isn't only negatively affecting my mental health but is also delaying the start of my career. read more

I don't know what's worse- the fact that I went to school here or that I would literally give it less than one star if I could. Let me start off by saying I LOVE Brooklyn- I love everything about it, but seriously this has got to be as about as Brooklyn as it gets. First- do not even try to call financial aid or registrar you are better off waiting 2-3 hours in the office. Second- if you fill out forms with change of address, make a payment, or even take a class and complete it, do not expect them to have that on file OR make the change you need. You will repeat this process 2-3 times as necessary until the one person in the office who cares is working on the day you come in. That comes to my next point- no one at this school cares about you. And be careful with your loan/ financial aid money they WILL screw up the balance. I'm giving one star for I had a few very well educated professors in my department AND the students here are cool too. But all the graduate programs that they offer are very good, you are well respected knowing u graduated from Liu. While I am extremely thankful for my education, I would not recommend this school to anyone. It is extremely expensive & the price per credit increases every year. Another thing I did not like about this school is that many of the professors require you to buy their book! So, not only do you have to hear their mouth for a whole semester, you are forced to read their views on whatever, & if you don't buy the book you get a big fat "F". I go to school here... and I'm glad I'm only paying $7500 for my MA. I don't spend a lot of time (awake) on campus. I have grad classes at night and sometimes use the gym or nap in the library. The gym facilities are nice. There is a swimming pool, track, weight room, cardio equipment, and group fitness room. The group classes are sparse but I enjoyed the ones that I did take: yoga, pilates, and total body. I really hate that the locker room is in the basement, down and around the corner. I can't just run out of the gym to get to where I need to be. And they don't allow you to bring your gym bag or jacket to the gym. I understand why this is, but if I'm in the group fitness room then I can logistically stow my bag inconspicuously in a corner. That aside, I enjoy using the gym or WRAC as it's known. The library is a catastrophe. Is it a library or is it a club? Because it's loud, there's music playing, everyone is yapping and eating. I mean, it's a fun place to hang out but good luck trying to study. One day, a female security officer came out of her little corner and started yelling at everyone to shut up or they'd get ticketed. It was hilarious. People stopped and looked at her for a second and went back to partying, er, studying. It's also outdated! Where does all the damn tuition money go to? Probably the Pharm program, because I heard that's the shit! read more

The DPT program at LIU is excellent, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to become a PT. The staff is great, knowledgeable, and ALWAYS there for you! I can't speak for the rest of the University because I really don't deal with anything else, but the DPT program rocks! read more

This is an excellent college in Brooklyn. The only University in the borough. It has all the majors but is well known for its pharmacy and nursing degrees. Every other major is offered here as well. The library has all the tools you need to be successful in your studies. Financial aid is available. The University has a great swimming pool and a gym that offers classes. They are free to students. The Professors really take an interest in the needs of the students whether its undergraduate or graduate. It has a dorm on campus as well as off campus which is walking distance to the school. The University is situated in downtown Brooklyn surrounded by a flux of shopping and restaraunts. The building used to be the old Paramount Theater which still has some original stuff. read more

NOT VETERAN FRIENDLY! Veterans! You can do a lot better! We aren't even acknowledged at this school for pictures, just like everyone else we only get acknowledged on Veterans Day and 9/11. A handful of professors will treat you like you aren't doing better than them, like you don't have a life outside of their class. A lot of the professors and advisors ESPECIALLY IN NURSING (Michael below IS NOT exaggerating AT ALL!) the advisors talk down on you, talk to you like crap like you don't matter like you're still in the military, they are RUDE... the 2 stars only came from the handful of Professors and Advisors that are heaven sent, I'm in the Health/Exercise program and besides onesies and twosomes they have been amazing, but hearing the issues my fellow Veterans are going through as well as what i go through when i do step out of that department (Health/Exercise Science) everyone else is not pleasant to be around. Let alone the Professors and Advisors that are amazing, are also fighting for their jobs and respect around LIU, but they are the reasons students stay! Let alone they're seen on ESPN, in magazines and other great things OUTSIDE of what they do at LIU. The bathrooms are disgusting, there are holes in the wall, half of the computers in the library are inoperable, the printer is iffy, there's only one, no food worth eating, the events are a waste.... for the money they get its a dump, definitely get the New York City from this school read more

My experience with this school was horrible from day one. For one, they never processed my financial aid, never. Then, tried to process it in January when the semester was over and it was too late. I was in the bursars office everyday since I started classes in September, submitting documents because every time I spoke to them something new was missing. Why not just communicate with me from the jump about the things I need to get done? And now they're holding my transcript purposely so I done continue education elsewhere and it sucks. Worst school and they do not care about their students just money money money. Which is understandable but how the heck am I supposed to pay the institution with no degree to gain the money owed?? I'm gonna save you all the trouble of deciding whether or not to go to this school and tell you that you're better off going to a SUNY or CUNY. This school will leave you with massive debt. I am barely a freshman at this college yet since my first year isn't starting till September but let me just say that classes hasn't even started yet and I already have $18000 in debt for ONE TERM. The coaches aren't even helpful either. I have so many questions but no one is offering help. I understand that when you're in college you're suppose to be off on your own and be a responsible adult but seriously there are so many documents I have to fill out and all these different types of loans that stand for I don't even know what. I was assigned a promise coach but even asking her doesn't help because after doing what she told me to, something else ended up not working. Orientation alone costs $250 because apparently it comes with a trip but all I want is a tour and advice about the school however whether I wanted to go to the trip or not I still had to pay $250. I'm already $18,000 in debt so imagine what it would be like for me if I had to purchase textbooks and school supplies on top of that. Keep in mind that in my situation my parents won't be paying off this debt for me instead I will either have to work through the school year which I really don't want to because I need to focus on my studies or pile it all up until I graduate and get a real job. Originally I wanted to come to liu just for the pharmacy program but now I just regret it. There are so many schools out there that will offer you a better pharmacy program that fits your financial situations. This school really just want to drain your pockets UPDATE: Ok so the first semester is nearly over now and let me tell you if you're going to come to this school for pharmacy just be prepared for the load of work and make sure that pharmacy is what you REALLY want to do. Even though this might sound cliche ask yourself what you want to do with your life and what you want to become. They ask you "What do you want to be when you grow up" for a reason.. Now to continue from my LIU experience not all of the teachers are bad but some of them are absolutely TERRIBLE. Some staff that is supposed to help you there are useless too. They send me emails about missing transcripts and when I go ask what's the issue they tell me that I don't have a missing transcript and that the email wasn't accurate because they based their information off of an old report which is an example to prove how unorganized they are. The promise coach that I was assigned is also useless. She's never in the office, comes to work late (hours late) or doesn't come into work at all. If you don't know what a promise coach is, a promise coach is someone that's assigned to you that's suppose to answer your questions and guide you throughout your years in college. The amount of tuition you have to pay compared to what you get in return is horrendous. The interior of the school is mediocre. It looks like every other school with the occasional breakage, rust, dust etc. It's pretty dull. The only reason why I can see someone going to this school is because they're a New Yorker that wants to stay in New York for pharmaceutical studies but if that's the case just go to St Johns and if you're an out of state student just save yourself and go somewhere else. Even though LIU is extremely easy to get into, pick up your grades in a CUNY or community college to get into a better school. This school aims to fill up its seats rather than to educate their students that's why the acceptance rate is so high. I have completed my MPA from this university, and overall, the friends I met are good, most professors were ok, and the neighborhood is a ghetto. First, the financial aid staff, bursar's customer service is extremely poor. Most professors don't care about anything beside their pay check. The neighborhood is an extreme ghetto which needs to be re touched and cleaned. Overall, don't go to this school...it is pricy and after graduation, there is no help for job placement. Additionally, there is extreme nepotism; favoritism with hiring process...it is always who you know, and not what skills you have esp. for entry level teaching positions. Do yourself a favor, and go to a CUNy school rather...you will actually learn something paying lot less. read more

Don't waste your money. High tuition.11k per semester. Horrible classrooms with old backboards and chalk residue that never gets washed off by maintenance. I can hardly see the writing on the board and the chem professors are bad educators and do not go over material in class properly. My previous college had dry erase boards and better professors. They are unapologetic and just honestly don't seem to care when they put their students in a shitty position. Very stingy with financial aid awards as well. DO NOT GO TO LIU BROOKLYN FOR UNDERGRAD 1. It is incredibly overpriced. 2. Lacks a campus culture, little to no dances, parties, student activities, etc. (No fun to be had unless perhaps you dorm) 2.1. You're gonna have a hard time doing any meaningful networking. 3.Education is meh at best, professors do an okay job, but it feels to much like high school. 4. INCREDIBLY STINGY SCHOOL! E.g. they ask for $34,000/year but put out one ply toilet paper Unless you have your undergrad and are applying to one of their programs (Nursing, pharmacy, etc.) don't go to LIU. It is a cash grab, they don't give a rat's ass about you, just your money and they make that apparent from day 1 when dealing with the financial office. I had an issue with my FAFSA for a month and a half, over that time they added $500 in "late fee's". read more

If you want to attend a school that is interested in taking your money and not giving two shits about your education then you should attend the LIU nursing program. I am someone who never listens to the opinions of others but I must say, LIU is HORRIBLE!!!!! They make it easy to enter the nursing program. Each students pays $200 for their seat. During orientation they are so nice to you. They tell you that they care for you and that if you have ANY issues please come see them ,that they will help. They consider us their children and they want to help and then as soon as you're in and after they collect their funds; you are treated like an orphan. I entered this school with a GPA of 3.987 and was excelling in all of my 6 courses....yes SIX courses (full time). But there is one class that has numerous typos on the exams. Almost everyone in my class failed. Our instructor is an adjunct professor and she is horrible. She doesn't teach us the material and she doesn't make the exams so our class is doing horribly! There are several students who are repeating this course and they are failing again because this professor is the worse! Please if you can, save your money and your beautiful brain cells and go elsewhere to become a nurse. read more

Maaaaaan, screw this school. Tuition is super expensive for no reason. This school panders to athletes and pharmacy program. Nursing just got a huge donation, which is great for them, it shows what can happen to a program when it receives the money it needs. I think they just hire people off of the street for the science department. Same goes for those damn financial advisors. One of them tried harassing me into a payment plan not understanding that I don't have 2000 dollars a month to give them. I asked her to do something w my extra aid, it was never done. Some of them are actually helpful on the other hand. I'm giving them a three star because there are a few good things about this school, like the art department, English, visual arts, the radio station, performing arts, also some remarkable professors who actually do want to see you succeed. read more

I can't in good faith recommend this school - at least not the MSW program. The department is keen on telling you how imperative is that you have your sh!t together while pursuing a graduate degree. Yes, it is a very trying process, but I think it's made even more difficult by the lack of organization in the department and the larger administration. I have received mail intended for other students; I have had to correct the same address on at least 3 occasions; Classes are switched around like musical chairs; choices in field placements are absolutely horrible; and the faculty seem totally uninterested in you as a student or teaching in general (there were exceptions). You will be deceptively charged a fee for student insurance with the waiver process being somewhat covert. The school is not even linked to the Federal Student Loans Program, so that promissory notes for Plus Loans are received electronically. If you are an adult student, don't be lured in by the part-time evening/weekend program; you will be told to quit your job in order to complete the program (this after you've already gone into debt just to enter). Overall, I did not enjoy this school; so glad it's over. read more

LIU is really a complete rip-off. I am in a graduate program, which the program is good (aka the staff that run it), but apart from that the campus is awful. They only maintain the outside grounds. The buildings on the inside are falling apart, many times I got bit by mosquitos while sitting in class. They never cleaned our 1 classroom which we sat in M-F for a full year. My tuition covered nothing but being allowed in the program (not to mention is $100k+). Doesn't cover any additional items that come up in the year that are REQUIRED by the program. No health services are provided. Worst of all, for a college campus there are NO good places to study. The library is often closed and when it's open its loud, undergrads eating and hanging out with their friends like it's their own house. Im pretty sure they never clean the library and computers that are heavily used. The printers aren't working half the time. Be prepared to have your own office setting with a printer and nice study area before going to LIU. Financial Aid is extremely incompetent. Many of the employees (excluding professors) are rude and not helpful. If you have other options, go for those, not LIU. read more

I have one degree from LIU and am working on a second one there now. So... you may say why only two stars? Because I give those stars to the school as a whole and not the faculty and other students in my department. The bursar office is confused and operates "in concert" with the overall bursar at CW Post, which is far away. There is no institutional support for the average student and their desire to excel in their chosen field or profession - unless they are pharmacy students. (This is unconfirmed but reasonable conjecture based on the fact that the pharmacy school manages to rake in millions in research grants each year while the rest of us toil in educational favelas doing more for our fellow man than compounding and filling a prescription or two. I could go on about this but you get the general idea.) In the end in cost versus benefit, I would say that the cost does not outweigh the benefit but it is up to the student (as anywhere) to maximize the benefits. read more

This school is a rip off and I would advise all to steer clear ! The employees there for the most part are all incompetent and are very rude. There is no type of help or guidance!
