While checking out, my husband politely asked the owner if he would consider selling one extremely worn, old book for $5 instead of $15. To our surprise, the owner refused to lower the price at all. What made this especially frustrating was that the book looked like it had been sitting in a pile near the bathroom, wasn't a classic, bestseller, or even a well-known title, and appeared to be something that may have originally come from a free library box. Meanwhile, we overheard the owner complaining to another customer that he has too many books and not enough space, even saying he had donated many books to clear room. The whole interaction felt hypocritical and left a very bad impression. We are passionate book buyers and regularly spend a lot on books, but after this experience, this is a store we will never return to.

The new owner told me all the reasons why he wasn't honoring the old owners gift cards. This did not endear me to the new owner. The whole visit left me with a bad taste in my mouth and though I love to promote and shop local businesses, I'm probably gonna pass on this one from now on.

I said "hello," rather than "Can you lend or give me a few million bucks." Of course, at that time he hadn't released the "Da Vinci Code" so I guess he wasn't quite as rich as I'd hoped. I was introduced because I'd bought his pre-DaVinci novels and liked them - especially the one about computers. Browne was very pleasant, and I've read the Da Vinci Code since then and liked it far more than his critics. Maybe they needed a book to hate. And the bookstore! The proprietor, Dan, is an extremely friendly guy, and seemed to be able to remember all the books I'd bought. The store has a large selections of books for all interests, and the staff pics I bought unknown turned out to be great recommendations. You may be soured on books from the chain stores - visit Water Street books and see how well a bookstore can be when the owners have a passion for books.
