Don't get be wrong, I'm not trying to be bias just because I went to school here, but because I been to a lot of the other middle schools, none of them have as safe of a campus as well as the amount of great staff that actually cares about students well being. I have been visiting many schools the past ten years, from volunteering to just pure visiting, and if you're thinking between Garvey Intermediate, Temple, Ynez, and all the other schools, please put Garvey as your consideration! Because trust me, your kid won't miss a thing. Best of all, there are many electives kids can choose from. From arts to choir, from band to yearbook and journalism. Why go private at New Ave school when you can save a bunch of money trying out a public middle school? I love classical music and I regularly attend to concerts and plays. I sincerely felt like I was in front of professional musicians. The band , the choir , the orchestra and jazz band were all so amazing! I could definitely see those children playing in the future at venues like Disney hall , zipper concert Hall and the Hollywood bowl. They all behaved like pros and gave their best. My only observation is : the parents need to be educated on how to behave during the performance. They whistled so loud and one had her phone on right behind me. I think a memo or an email to the parents should go out before each performance reminding the parents what the protocol is during a concert. Is not an sport event where you scream and whistle. They really ruin it and set a bad example. It was well attended by parents and that is wonderful. More civility is needed.

I completed the report with my mom's help, writing about what we thought were positive things about an American general -- because no one, especially our teacher, explained otherwise. Instead of using that moment to teach or guide, Mrs. Olson embarrassed me in front of the class. That experience stuck with me even now. Looking back, I realize how important it is for teachers to be compassionate and culturally aware -- especially toward students who may not have the same background knowledge or support at home. This experience made me feel small and ashamed for something that wasn't my fault. This trauma I still think about today and always lingering in my mind, it will never go away. I hope the school now focuses on helping teachers better support students from diverse backgrounds and to use empathy, not humiliation, as a teaching tool.

I have a little cousin whose seen other students get humiliated in front of the class. Being called names and making it pretty clear that that child is a failure in front of all their classmates. They even had incidents where the teacher will withhold the students from going to the bathroom and most students would pee their pants in the classroom. How can these teachers be so unsympathetic, with no humanity, and still say they are all about the students? I'm pretty sure they don't even do background checks on these people they are hiring.

This is my first year here, I have two children attending. Everything seemed great until the first…read moreday of school. I've had a crazy busy day running errands while juggling a baby since drop off. When I came to pick up my kids the same place I dropped them off it was a little confusing since it's new. Apparently I was at the wrong location for pick up. I make my way around feeling a bit anxious now but I see one of my children and gave a little honk as I see her and her teacher walk away. The principal Linda, right away screamed out no honking you gotta get out. So I parked and I pulled my baby out, there I explained I came by to the same spot I dropped them off at and her response was "if you were here yesterday you would've known this is where pick up is because I explained it" in front of other parents. On top of being anxious, exhausted, and lost now I am completely embarrassed. Now my child has walked away from where I can no longer see or call for her as she walks towards the office. I got back in my car buckled my son back up and parked again now for the 3rd time and I got out once more to the other pick up area for my other child when I was told my younger one can walk to my older one and I can do one pick up instead of two by the office staff. I felt she could've explained and guided me instead of being rude and insulting me in front of other parents. As well as being more understanding since it is the first day of school after all. Not a great first impression.
