Love the school, the academics and there's always someone available to talk to in the office, which is not the case in most public schools.

Keppel is the high school of the city of Monterey Park. Still looks the same back when I used to visit here when I was in high school. Same old buildings with some minor upgrades. This review is for the gym. Mofufus Basketball League is held here on Sunday for the past few years. The old gym is as it sounds, old court and old bleachers. The new gym is as it sounds, new and clean. They run 1 game on the old court and run 2 games on the new courts. Awesome league. Very fun to play in! read more

Like any other young student, the teachers here really propelled me to new heights, and pushed me beyond what I thought I could do. When I started school here. I hated it. Crowded hallways, Chinese spoken at every turn of the corner, Asian teachers and administers; even though I was Asian american I didn't feel like I fit in. When I stood on the stairs, all I saw was a sea of black hair and glasses. Stereotypical maybe- but Mark Keppel High School was that kind of school. Keppel is not a very diverse school, at all whatsoever. Nonetheless, the students were high achievers. I remember in my freshman year my orchestra concert master went to Yale. Subsequent classmates attended Princeton and Brown University. The girls basketball team and the sports team were extremely hardworking, and they came home with many accolades. Orchestra, Guitar, Band and World Drumming instructor, Dr. Carla Bartlett is one of the finest teachers I have ever had, and ever will have in my opinion. Strict at times, she was passionate about her craft and really loved and cared for her students. The art teacher, Bonnie Bostwick is charismatic, lovable, and overall just a wonderful person. There are many opportunities for high achievement at Keppel, I was involved in CSF the California Scholarship Federation and NHS the National Honors Society, both clubs had a large pool of students who were active in community service on campus. In addition, we have a strong Academic Decathalon Team and Math Club, which often compete in regional competitions. There are many AP classes offer at Keppel as well: Environmental Science, World History, US History, Physics B and C, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, English, English Literature, Spanish, French and more. Being able to take AP classes in high school really helped a lot now that I am in college. There is a social club scene on campus as well: Akasa Arai, Talondi , etc. Keppel has prepared me well for college, and for the real world. The teachers here can be tough at times, but they are true to themselves and their passions, they love their students. Of course every school has it's pros and cons; certainty there are certain professors, students and staff that were not so great, but overall the academic rigor and wide variety of ways to get involved really made Mark Keppel my second home. I used to hate this school but I've really grown to appreciate it. I would recommend Keppel to any students or parents hoping to give their children access to many opportunities. read more

Ranked 451 on Newsweek's 1,000 "Best High Schools in America" 2004. First place in La County Academic Decathlon for 2008. Everyone seems to knock on my old HS for being ghetto. (I remember during a prop. 20-Something campaign to give more money to public schools, they had footage of our small gym, how sad is that?! A great academic school. I also remember losing our homecoming football game to the Alhambra Moor(ons), students started chanting, "S-A-T .... I've attended basketball games here, and the main gym is nice. My kids enjoyed playing in the baseball fields up front.

So I'm a student at this school, and it seems like this is one of the best schools as they advertise, but in fact the staff are horrible. They blame everybody and everything for there mistakes. Especially the supervisors. They confíscate your phone for having it out for a second. The food is down right horrible and the chips they give are expired. The weight room has bad equipment and three of the machines inside are broken but they blame it on kids that use it. This is nonsense because they don't want to use any of the money they have to repair so instead they but caution tape over it. The football field is poorly treated with holes and bad lawn. read more

I come here on Sunday's to play my league basketball games. With the new courts, there can be 2 full court games running simultaneously. Which is really nice. One thing I would like to see is Valet service..... JUST KIDDING. A good thing to know though, is that parking is limited. That is all. Otherwise, this is just like any other high school around the neighborhood. read more

I'm a 2013 baby from MK. Parking is a pain in the ass and the staff here is terrible. Someone needs to remind them why they're getting paid in the first place. Receiving one of the most worst services here ever. The staff looks unhappy with their jobs. Even though I'm a student, and the other folks are bond to think I'm weird, I'm still going to be fair for those that really don't know half of the stuff some of the other students are saying are mostly a bunch of shit. Our school is basically 80-90% Asians. Not mostly the AB ones, but the overseas, fob, as some will call, kids that tend to mind their own business and keep to themselves. Don't get me wrong, we have some American-born kids here, but the majority of them aren't so high in manners or any of that. Our campus is fairly peaceful to the point where staff members that used to work in other schools are BORED of their jobs, but we do make up for all that with talking behind people's backs. Let me tell you something, our math department means business. They grade hard, but they actually teach the kids one way or the other. Our councilors are always there when you need them, even if they're all out, the office will direct you to someone you need. I've had some bullying issues going down in my Culinary group (scary, because the group of girls tend to steal the knife and wave it around and point at me to get what they want), and they handled it unbelievably well and thought of mine, and the other kids safety first. Our school phycologists (which I've seen before) are great, and although everyone believes high school teachers don't care about their students, it was actually my English, Spanish and Math teachers that noticed something was wrong with me, and sent me to get help. This just shows how much they notice about their kids and they do worry for us. Heck, an art teacher I've never met before found out what happened and checked up on me for a few days straight. That's why I found it bull that some of the reviewers say our staff are horrible. I'm sorry, I got carried away, but let's talk about how low our school spirit is and how we are competitive against our peers with grades. We tend to focus on our academics more than any other events, so there's that. Any grade wise things are important to us. To be honest, dances and sports events aren't as intense and noticed compare to any college related stuff. Our school don't really have many clubs, but majority of them are either related to human rights clubs, community service clubs, or of course, sports clubs. Okay look I am a student here and I just feel like these teachers or staff members here think they know everything and now it's even more messed up, my friend and I got in trouble and got sent to the student services for an investigation and we didn't even do anything my teacher even told me to help my friend in the class cause he was struggling, we had a quiz the next day so gave him my knowledge of the book the great gatsby that we are reading if he had any trouble understanding what's going on in the book, so of course we would have the same understanding of the book, then we get "caught cheating" the assistance principle interviewed us one by one and I was the first and then I told him my story of what happened then he twisted my story and told me that my friend told him a different story so I thought my friend was so messed up to just get me in trouble for no reason. so I talked to him at lunch and he said he didn't even tell the assistance principle anything cause I was the one who went in first, so this really got me pissed , maybe it's cause they have beef with the afterschool activity that I have or smt but yea read more

If you're going to T.A. don't go for the guidance office because they give you like 20 plus summons everyday in which it includes going up and down the 3rd floor of the c building all of the time and the office people are pretty mean and rude to you so you're better off with helping classroom teachers. Also if you're a senior make sure you check your official transcript because they seem to give you the wrong grade often. read more

Mark Keppel High School is like no other; and I'm sure about that because I've been to three other high schools before graduating from Keppel. It's newly remodeled campus looks really nice although I attended the school during the midst of their construction where the old lunch court flooded when it rained. I had a psycho guidance counselor, but in the end she meant well, after all I did graduate and I did attend college. The school has higher academic standards than both the other high schools in their district, San Gabriel High School and Alhambra High School, which were two of the three schools I previously attended. Mark Keppel High School is constantly receiving more and more recognition for their academic achievement in recent times. Don't get me wrong, Keppel isn't only about academics, their associated student body does pretty well in keeping the school spirit alive. As for sports, basketball is the pick and football is still the underdog. I would say Keppel is an activist campus, take a look at their student run clubs which range from political clubs to interest clubs to show choir and band -- they all have a general theme of creating an impact at MKHS. There is a strong PTSA in place and the school administration is not perfect, but average is better than dysfunctional. read more

I love this school. It's the best highschool on Hellman. If you want a school with a lot of Asians cause you're into that, don't come here they don't speak english. You will find around 3 attractive people per grade level (so around 12 people). And there are approximately 3 and a half white people every 4 years. They are kind of the most exotic breed of humans in the big zoo called mark keppel. There is also a staircase called the F-stairs (Guess what the "F" stands for). The teachers there are pretty yes. But not all of them are that great. If you see these names on your schedules prepare to have the best times of you life, Mr. Lai (if you're a guy), Mr. Riley, and Ms. Rapp. If you ever enroll in this school prepare to feel better than OJ after he was found innocent in his first trial. Then when you find out that everyone in your class is a dikhead you'll feel as bad as OJ after his second trial. There are those teachers that make coming to school more enjoyable, because they let you ditch class in their class. Overall, this school is pretty good, because after you leave you'll have to actually work. read more
