The views here are INSANE! We caught the most beautiful sunset! What's better than getting productive in a beautiful space? Getting productive in a beautiful space with a front row seat to the ocean. This library has plenty of seating options (most of which are ocean facing) with most having outlets or being near an outlet. There's a nice patio out front if you need to eat a quick bite, take a call, or pop out for a killer picture of the sunset. The entire space is adorably nautical themed with a little children's nook. It stays pretty quiet overall too! Definitely on my list of all-time favorite libraries. read more

Still my favorite library. Can't beat the views. I hadn't been in a while and it looks like there have been some changes. There was a security guard by the door. In the past, there were quite a few houseless folks. I didn't see any this time. It was pretty full for it being mid day. The event space has a lovely gallery that I enjoyed meandering through and taking it in. The friends of the library book store always has enticingly affordable gems and the staff is wonderfully friendly. read more

Today was the first time we came to the Encinitas Library, a branch of the County of San Diego Library. Wow! We were rather surprised to see the good-sized parking lot nearly full late on a Tuesday afternoon. Walk inside, it's a rather large library with -- get this -- floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Magnificent! Back to the Library. In addition to the stacks, there are meeting rooms, a community room, laptop connections, a lounge area at the windows, a book store, and more. The staff members are welcoming and very helpful. Everything is neat and well-organized. This was quite a pleasurable experience ... and all we wanted to do was drop off our ballots while in Encinitas. read more

I've spent a lot of time at Encinitas library and highly recommend it. The views are great and it's open until 5pm on Sunday. Also, there is a good amount of spaces to read or so work on a laptop. read more

This is frustrating, as this is a nice library, with mostly nice, helpful staff. But again, I write this because I have to wear headphones to try to drown out patrons that are having LOUD conversations, kids are running around, unchecked, no one saying anything - parents or library staff. Playing, and even SCREAMING - AND, AGAIN NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING TO ANYONE. But I looked up a phone number to call the CA DMV OUTSIDE the building (many people place calls inside) and entered the number into my phone. Before I could even finish the number, a staff member was already telling me to silence my phone. I had already set it down and was about to go outside for the call, yet she had to remind me of the "quiet" rules. WHAT A JOKE, in a room full of LOUD NOISE from other inconsiderate patrons. If you only enforce rules on a small percentage of people, but allow the rest to break rules - it's called DISCRIMINATION!!!!! It is also very rude! Not the first time. Experts say that smaller, less obvious examples of day-to-day discrimination--receiving poorer service at stores or restaurants, (libraries) being treated with less courtesy and respect -- may be more common than major discrimination. Such day-to-day discrimination frequently comes in the form of "microaggressions" such as snubs, slights, and misguided comments that suggest a person doesn't belong or invalidates his or her experiences. Though microaggressions are often subtle, they can be just as harmful to health and well-being as more overt episodes of major bias. Finding healthy ways to deal with discrimination is important, for your physical health and your mental well-being. Help yourself think clearly. Being the target of discrimination can stir up a lot of strong emotions including anger, sadness, and embarrassment. Such experiences often trigger a physiological response, too; they can increase your blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature. Try to check in with your body before reacting. Slow your breathing or use other relaxation exercises to calm your body's stress response. Then you'll be able to think more clearly about how you want to respond. read more

This is a great library in many aspects. The view is phenomenal, the architecture alone is inspiring, they have blazing fast upload/download wifi as a part of the California Library Network internet -- I was able to upload a 2 gig video quickly and with ease. I usually go to MCC because their internet is crazy fast, but now, I have a place to go if I am in this area. Fun fact, you can check the speed of the internet of the library (on the california library network) you are near to, and it tells you who has the V4 network, and who doesn't (Carlsbad). My main issue is there is no physical separation of the main "quiet" part of the library and the children's area. There is no regulation of people letting their children run and scream and play in the area, which I am no monster, let your kids play...but parents....please try to be considerate of other users. If they were in a separate room with a sound barrier it would be really nice and then kids can be kids. I know a library is a great place for kids, just maybe not this one. I say this because I came here to work in a quiet environment, I have learning disabilities/focus issues and hearing a child scream non-stop is incredibly distracting on top of it it adds the noise floor I have to filter out in order to concentrate on my work. They don't care if they're loud, they don't understand noise regulation but a parent should. My work includes sound editing, and I assumed (wrongly!) that a library would be a quiet place to be. As well as that main noise problem, I do agree that there are limited areas to work/study. There are tables but when I was there around 1pm almost all of them were taken up. I noticed a few people would sit at a large table that supports multiple people, spread out and make you feel like an asshat if you needed a table to sit and work. I don't mind asking to sit somewhere... but the annoyance of the man, who clearly set up a second pink ipad and wasn't using it (obviously to take up space like someone else was there), was palpable. There are quite a few plugs placed around the floor but not frequent enough or near enough to a seat that could support a laptop/workspace. I appreciate the tables that were available, but there needs to be an addition of small 1-2 people tables (2-tops) in the same frequency of those useless couch chairs that are clearly designed to be for reading. You can't sit straight on those chairs, there is no place for a laptop to be used, and there is barely any outlets nearby. Don't get rid of them, just add more! And today was a particularly blustery day, which rendered the outside patio useless. read more

This library is state of the art, super modern with luxurious, comfortable furniture, computer stations everywhere, and a very clean, organized book shelving that has plenty of options. The children's section has computers with learning programs, and nice reading nooks with wrap around sofas. There's a large selection of kids books in Spanish as well. Plenty of parking outside, and a nice new playground across the street make this a winning place to spend some time with the kids. read more

This is a library? So, apparently someone took a prime piece of real estate on top of a hill overlooking downtown Encinitas with the clear, blue ocean framing it and built a public building on top of it. That building is large, single story, with multiple decks overlooking the beauty around it. Stunning, is the best way to put it; the view is really quite incredible. Coming out here to enjoy a book and watch the sunset would be a great way to spend any afternoon / evening. The Children's Section is extensive, books, tapes, videos, and DvD's of all kinds. Couches and benches, a table for coloring, a side room for groups, and a bathroom for kids fill out the area. We originally came for the "Rockin' Toddler Time," but we found it too loud and crowded. Skipping the second half of it on my son's suggestion, we sat in the lounge and read about ten books as he giggled and laughed through it all, excited knowing we would come back soon. Other sections are not as populated, some of the shelves a bit barren, but there is still a good collection of books and magazines. Next time we go, I'm curious how easily they can find or get something that they don't currently have in stock. And, next time we donate books, we're definitely coming here to drop them off. A computer lab with multiple desktops is here as well, though I have no idea how secure the network is; running a pen test on government equipment is not something I'd like to go to jail for. Outside there's a coffee stand to grab your favorite blend to enjoy the morning breeze and spring birds. They have free books to take and other books to buy, a small shop on the side with selections for kids and adults; something for everybody. And then, back to that view. Seriously, it's the best thing about a place that's already beautiful and serene. The Encinitas Library may not have sheer volume of books and music as they do in Carlsbad, but you couldn't have asked for a nicer place to enjoy them. read more

Great library but the areas to study are minimal / always full. And it's really a shame they don't regulate the private study rooms better. They're always used by business men having loud conferences and meetings and the walls are just glass doors so if you're trying to study in the private rooms you're also listening to someone's business meeting. I've complained before but the librarian didn't do anything. I have a learning disability and it's really hard for me to concentrate on my reading if there's background noise. I show up early to book the private room and most of the time it doesn't help, because even with my ear plugs I can still hear men's voices vibrating through the walls. Im saying men specifically because this has happened 10-12 times and it's just happened to be men speaking loudly. I guess I'll have to try another library but it's a shame this has turned into a free office space for people that already hve jobs while I'm trying to do my reading and get my education to earn a job. read more

As my mother and grandmother were both educators, literacy was at the forefront of my childhood. Needless to say, I have been to numerous libraries on both coasts of the United States. With that said, Encinitas library is surely the most beautiful, modern library I have ever visited. This location was spacious and could accommodate a variety of library goers. There were many computers and plenty of tables for people to worker either together or alone on their personal laptops. This library even had many outdoor patios, where patrons could make a call or read in the the natural light. And the resources were plentiful! Numerous sections of books and digital media. This is an ideal library for an individual working or studying! Did I mention the ocean view?! read more

This library is one of those places that you want to keep coming back to seat outside and enjoy the ocean views and in hot days sit inside in comfortable chairs and still enjoy the ocean views! Some areas are very noisy, others are quiet. There are meeting rooms with comfortable chairs. Wifi is available and many work desk with outlets for your electronics. The concert room has art in display. Bathrooms are nice and clean. Staff is very helpful and children seems to enjoy this library too, book selection isn't much but we like libraries and will keep coming back. read more

There is a reason this place gets so many four and five star reviews. Beautiful architecture. The swooping clean lines suggest a crashing wave. What a coincidence because... The panaromic views of the Pacific are simply stunning. Name me another library with views like this. Go on, i'll wait. About 20 computers free to use. Clean, very modern interior. Nice restrooms. A coffee cart outside and yes you can bring drinks and grub in. Tons of free events, concerts, movies, plays, etc. for both adults and kids. Tons of free (yes, free) CDs and DVD movies for rent. And many of the movies have big names. Take that Bloodsucker, Redbox, Netflix, etc. Oh yeah, they have books, too. Place your books on a little wooden platter, scan your library card with the supermarket type scanner, and you are done. And yes, you can stack your books on the wooden platter and somehow the ghost in the machine reads and remembers all the books at once. It really does work. You and I paid for this place so you might as well use it. Thankfully, this is an instance when you will not hear me grousing about government waste. This library is a gem and it is well attended. Build it...and they will come. read more

This has got to be one of the most spectacular libraries around! The ocean views are incredible from most any area of the building. There is plenty of table space, computer work stations and comfy couches to rest, read and study (not necessarily in that order). We are big fans of this library. I started taking my daughter to the "Baby Signing Story & Music Time" class they offer every Friday at 10:30am when she was just 4 months old. This is a free activity for families and each class lasts about 1/2 hour which is the perfect amount of time for little ones. My daughter LOVES books and story time at home so she has taken to this activity very well. The class is great and the instructors are usually super patient with all the little ones and parents too. My daughter also loves music so she listens and takes it all in. Re; the signing. I really didn't think my daughter was learning anything but one day shortly before her 1st birthday, she started signing; milk, more and eat. She doesn't sign it but she knows the sign for listen, book and cat. After investing a lot of time and hustling over right after her morning naps, this turned out to be a great activity for us. I've also got to know a few other moms with children my daughter's age so if you're a new mom and looking to meet others, this is a great place to do so. Once the story time is over, a bunch of bins filled with toys are put out for the little ones. The kids are able to play and interact with one another -- they really love it. This allows the parents a few moments to chat as well before heading out. I'm definitely a fan of the Encinitas Library, especially their Friday story time class. read more

This library is beautiful. It's really bright with all the windows and the view is lovely. We went to one Rockin' Toddler Time and it was pretty crowded (even though one mom told me it wasn't that bad 'this week'). Would we try it again? Probably. I couldn't hear half of the things because it was really noisy so I can't judge the quality of the storytime, but from what I saw, it was interactive and encouraged the kids to move around. They have an adjacent patio area if your kid is overwhelmed and needs to escape for a bit. Yeah, we found that quickly. They have a cute children's section with a little sitting area. One of the librarians helped me find some Jewish storybooks and then had them shipped to my local library. She was very helpful. We'll give it another shot! read more

Lead with the strengths: First and most obvious, the view! This library sits high on a hill and provides patrons the opportunity to enjoy the resulting beautiful ocean view with a full back wall of glass windows and comfortable seating. It also has a large parking lot, although I have had to circle to find a spot on occasion. For many years, there was a coffee cart in front of the building that sold a variety of yummy hot and cold drinks and other goodies. I know that the original owner sold it;; I am not sure if the cart is still there. If it is, treat yourself before heading inside. Remember the days when food and drink were forbidden? Not any more! You're also allowed to talk all you want in most of the library areas. There is a large community room which is available for rental. All kinds of interesting talks and meetings have been held there. If you're civic minded, keep an eye on the calendar for upcoming events. There's a bank of computers provided for the use of residents. I believe there is a daily time usage limit, but am not sure what that is. Also, like so many libraries today, this one provides movies to check out along with books and periodicals. There are also plenty of magazines to choose from if you just want to relax and read for a while there. Lots of literary knowledge and great bargains are to be had at the small shop the Friends of the Library runs in a small room that adjoins the main area. If you have children, there are hosted activities like, story hours and arts and crafts, plus stacks of books with dedicated seating. If the kids need a book break, coloring tables available. Need some fresh air? There's a park and playground right next door. That brings us to the minus column. I do not find the County library system in general to carry an abundance of new titles or anywhere near enough of the ones they have. I have never, not once, gone to find a particular title and had any luck. Either they don't carry it at all, or there are no copies on the shelves. Yes, I know I can join the wait list. I've done that and eventually my turn comes up. Sometimes it takes months. This library replaces one that was housed in a dark, tiny room for many years, and I understand that a lot of taxpayer money was spent to create a space we are proud to call our own. It almost feels petty to take away a star from such a wonderful community resource, but after all, books are a library's raison d'être. In summary, the Encinitas Library is a wonderful place to spend a day. Just don't count on leaving with the books you had planned! read more

What can I say that already hasn't been said about this library? Oh...let me tell you this is my favorite place to escape with my own reading material and computer. I hang out at this place to catch-up on my self-provided reading material. I haven't checked out any library books, DVD's or anything for that matter, but chill here because of the Spectacular View and for the company of others who are drilling their brains. This place has so many electrical plugs for your laptop it's un-believable! Not only is there good WiFI but also it's always a mystery to me to discover another place to read. They have the most comfortable sofas and chairs to relax in and to enjoy your surfing of the web. I almost don't want to do a review for fear others will discover this treasure of a place. I took my girls to check out books and as soon as we walked in both of my girls were followed by two different librarians between the book aisles. One of them noticed I saw her and she pretended to look through books and aisles. After my older one sat down I noticed one of the same librarians was watching her and made us extremely uncomfortable that we decided to check out our books and leave. As we were checking our books we couldn't figure out how to check them out since it was different from our old library. The librarian was clearly annoyed we couldn't figure out. Sadly I know why this happened to my girls, they're not white in a white neighborhood. Unfortunately we're going to need to return since this is only a block from our house. I came here for the first time today to pick up my library card and a book I had on hold. Everything looked beautiful and can't wait to take full advantage of this location. Unfortunately I was disappointed in how the staff treated a new employee as she helped me. Joni was the only one who had a smile on her face and was friendly and helpful. She stated she was new and asked two different coworkers questions and they were both rude and short with her. I completely understand that it is a stressful time getting used to this new "normal" of masks, plastic dividers, social distancing etc but please let's not take it out on each other! One of the most beautiful and eco-friendly libraries I have seen around the world! Encinitas library emanates really good vibes, as the waves you can see of the Pacific Ocean from those gigantic windows. This library is an entertainment center per se: live music, art exhibitions, expositions, ample space and chill out areas (oh that terrace is pure bliss!). The most important thing for me, though, is the very well curated international movies section. It is unbelievable how many foreign movies you can get here, from different countries, a great way to learn languages or keep up with the ones you know. The same with foreign literature and magazines. I get my dose of Spanish literature here, this is the best library around. Hopefully the one in downtown San Diego will be la creme de la creme, but hey, won't have the surfer dude chill attitude as this one, for sure! read more

No excuse to be open for 6 hours a day. Our tax dollars pay for this to be open for a reasonable amount of time. Some people don't have the schedule to fit into this allotment. So sad that such a great library has to follow these short practices. read more

Just to clarify - Both Encinitas libraries are run by the County of San Diego. One is off Cornish; the other is off Newcastle in Cardiff-by-the-Sea - not too far away. The solar panels on City Hall have been put in too since I Iast wrote my review. Baby steps towards being full "green." Well, I said I'd give the library 5 stars with the solar panels in place, but 4 will do. LOL read more

This library is amazing!! I go here to study almost everyday and is becoming an absolute necessity for me and other students to go get crucial long hour study sessions done! The environment is so safe and quiet and such a great learning environment!The staff helps maintain such a nice quiet and safe atmosphere for getting work done! I am so grateful to have this library open all week, And i'm sure that I am just one of the many students who are local and greatly appreciate this space! read more
