A liiiiiittle bit pricier than what you can get elsewhere, but it's totally worth it for me. I have an INCREDIBLY temperamental VW Jetta, and this is the only place that knows how to pass it. I have had other smog centers fail my car simply because my transmission wouldn't allow them to test it. So frustrating when I know my emissions are fine! At this shop, they know what they are dealing with when a VW rolls in. They always spend a few extra minutes working with my car to get it to shift properly and pass promptly. Having never had to do smog before, I was worried about what my first experience would be like. Horror stories of cars not passing, sketchy shops, and a whole plethora of other issues lurked in the back of my mind as I pulled into the parking lot. Fortunately, everyone here is super straightforward, super helpful, and super nice. For around $50 I was out the door and my car passed the first try. I maybe waited 10 minutes before they pulled my car in (call and make an appointment) and I was out of there quickly. It's a really easy spot to pull into, and they open pretty early. I will probably bring my car here again to be smogged. No complaints! PS - they also offer many of the common DMV services! read more

This place is FANTASTIC! I called for an appointment and was able to get in first thing the next day. They took my vehicle in right away and performed the smog test in 15 minutes. I walked down the street and grabbed a coffee and by the time I got back- it was done! I had hoped to get my vehicle registration done as well- but after talking to Nathan (at Encinitas Smog Center), I realized that since I am leasing my car and transferring registration from out of state- I needed some additional paperwork sent to the DMV. Nathan went WAY above and beyond, printing documents for me, going through the checklist of what I will need at the DMV, and doing my VIN verification for me. I can not speak highly enough of this business and their customer service. Now we just need for them to open their own full DMV and the world will be a better place! :) read more

That said, we have no control over where vehicles get directed to, we do know that if the PCM in the vehicle was modified or re programmed that it may get flagged to the referee. As far as smog places go, this is the absolute best. Everything you could possibly want in this scenario exists. Best price (I called at least a dozen places), quick service, free retest and staff that helps get you in and out without any hassle. Not really a waiting room per say but across the alley is Ironsmith coffee, so that's a huge bonus since it's some of the best coffee around. By the time I ordered my coffee, chatted with a friend for a few minutes and walked the 20 seconds back across the alley, my car was run. Big win read more

Alex and his family are awesome, kind, competent, and honest. I took my 84 motorhome here last Friday for a smog test/repair. Best move I ever made. Just before going here, I went to Fergusons who failed my smog and wanted $400 just for a diagnosis test BEFORE doing any work! And they wanted me to keep it there for the weekend. I said no way and instead took it here where they removed by carb, adjusted, and cleaned , and passed the smog for $300. All in a couple hours. I was sooo relieved!!! What a great place. Made an appointment for my motorhome and I was in and out. Definitely check this place out!

I needed a smog check, but my check engine light was on. My regular mechanic (now my former mechanic) had diagnosed it as needing a new fuel pump to fix. I called Encinitas Smog center and asked if they could deal with the light so I could get my test. They said bring it in. A few hours later, it was fixed. The problem was some cracked hoses and the total charge was $105. I drove it for a couple days and then it passed the test. Alex, Nathan and the rest of the guys were so nice, I felt totally comfortable with them. I like this place because they don't have an incentive to fail you so they can fix your car. The guys that work there are pretty friendly. The only con is that they're always booked up like crazy, but they're really good about getting you in if you have an appointment. read more

Always good friendly service and reasonably fast. Nathan does a great job and is great for customer service. Only bad thing is if your car has a problem, you then have to take it to another place to repair, and then because you have already paid the smog check fee, you have to go back. If you think your car may have an issue it best to go to someone like the Shell on el Camino where they can repair it at the same time so it is only one trip instead of three. read more

WOW. Big difference from two years ago, and NOT in a good way. Customer service seems to take a back seat here now. Had a decent expierence here two years ago, but i went on a monday with an appointment and was very dissapointed. was told 30 minutes took a little over an hour. Kid testing my car practically burned up my clutch, not a racecar but my little s2000 is all I have, tried to talk to the technician but he seemed a litlle slow. anyways left and came back and this kid was still smogging my car! Sat, waited, then watched him give my clutch one last beating before leaving VERY dissapointed. Will definitely go somewhere else next time. Place is really run down but most of all service was bad. My 93 pathfinder failed at Encinitas Smog Center but passed two blocks away at A+ Smog Test Only Center. The hydrocarbon readings for 15 and 25 MPH at Encinitas Smog Center were 76 and 32 repecctively. At A+ Smog Center they were 61 and 24 respectively. For anyone with and older car, go to A+ Smog Center and always perform a tuneup (plugs, rotor, wires, etc.) before testing on old cars to improve your test results. The day I arrived at Encinitas Smog Center someone was painting their large van in the area directly adjacent to the test machine, filling the test area and downtown Encinitas with HCs and VOCs. No spray booth, no mask, nothing. Unbelievable. I felt like I had stepped back into the 70s (in a bad way). I can't help but wonder if the higher HC readings were due to the white fog of automotive paint wafting through the test center. After failing the test, the folks at Encinitas Smog Center told me to try Techron Gasoline and come back for a re-test. No other suggestions were given. A+ Smog Center was a much more thorough and friendly experience, with the owner, Carolyn running the front desk and doing the testing. After passing (barely) at A+ Smog Center, the owner told me I should always perform a tuneup (plugs, rotor, wires, etc.) on old cars to improve my test results. read more
