The Endangered Wolf Center has been on my bucket list for years. I was thrilled to be able to attend a "Howl at the Moon" Friday evening event. We lucked out with the weather being warm and clear. The staff were very engaging and knowledgeable. We enjoyed sitting around the campfire and learning about all of the animals. They have laminated pictures of the animals and tell you about their behavior and how they collaborate with other groups (government, ranchers, etc) to promote a thriving ecosystem. After the education, we quietly walked a short way down a trail to literally howl and hear the wolves (and foxes?) howl back. We were not disappointed. It sounded like a large, wild kennel. Afterwards, there were s'mores by the fire pit. We even saw a bonus animal slither past us. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone open to learning more about animals. Wear clothes and shoes that can get a bit dirty so you can be fully relaxed. We also applied lots of bug spray when we arrived. read more

This has been a hidden secret for decades. I was born and raised in the area and my mother lived here her whole life and did not know about it until I saw it in the AZA reciprocity list. They had a golf cart and private driver to accommodate me and my my moms mobility needs and we saw so many great foxes and wolves. They have plenty of room for them to roam making it like a natural habitat. Also nearby is Lone Elk Park (free) and the Wild Bird Sanctuary (small fee) worth checking out. read more

Amazing! I took my 9yo grandson and daughter for fall break. The history of the land itself was so interesting. Our guide was outstanding, very educated on the history of the park, the animals and their history, not only was it educational but it was fun and exciting. The wolfs were all visual in their habit, at one point they all began howling, you could close your eyes and imagine you were in the wild with them. Animals were all beautiful with a large verity of different species. could not of been a better trip, we will definitely go back again. it's something you could see on every trip to STL, learning something new and seeing something new every time. read more

We went on the standard tour and got to see a lot of fun behaviors from the animals--keep in mind this isn't always guaranteed, as they are more active at night and generally keep their distance from humans--your guide will explain why that is. The tour guide was excellent, full of information about the area's history as well as the animals' conservation, native environments, and everyday behavior. The tour was OK but not quite what we expected. We thought there would be some close contact with the animals but we do understand why they are kept away from humans. We appreciate the job you are doing in saving these animals but if we wanted to see them from a distance we could do that at the zoo. In any case keep up the good work. read more

Although it was a little hard to locate, the staff were extremely well informed and willing to answer all my granddaughter's questions. We learned much about maned wolves and african painted dogs, the breeds that live too far from native populations to be re-homed. Finally, it was astounding to see wolves in the wild. I was looking for something to do as a family, and booked the tour of the Endangered Wolf Center. Our tour guide, Page, was very knowledgeable and made the walking tour very interesting. We saw Mexican Gray Wolves and a couple of foxes. The African Wild Dogs were napping but we could see them. All in all an enjoyable experience. I will probably look into booking other things that are offered there. read more

We came here and did the endangered species tour. The tour took us to the homes of the foxes, wolves, and turtles. We spent quite a bit of time at each location and our tour guide gave us a lot of information on the animals. She was also very knowledgeable and had an answer for every question that she was given which was awesome. There is also a gift shop inside. Just know that when you come here for your tour, you will have to stop at the front gate and call a number to be let in. There is no bathrooms at the visitor center either, they are a short walk away in some porta-potties. We ended up adopting a wolf pack which gave us a box with a certificate, screensaver, some stickers, a postcard, and a plush. It also gives you a free tour and a a year long membership. They were awesome working with me to get my package picked up while I was there, instead of having it mailed to me. read more

Awesome educational experience. We splurged and did a private tour ($20/adult, minimum $80) and Docent Mike and Sandy were very thorough in their tour. We arrived early, pulled to side after entering the gate, then our guides met us promptly at our appointment time, and explained that we drive after them to the gift shop where we start the tour w/ an informational session. They explained the the need for the endangered wolf center, how the ultimate goal is to reintroduce these amazing animals back into an appropriate area (when society will support reintroduction) and did a great interactive discussion of the 6 species we would hopefully see: Mexican Gray Wolf, Red Wolf (indigenous to MO) then the Swift Fox, South American Maned Wolf, African Painted Dog, and the new ambassador, Fennec Fox - which is not endangered, and tours with them to spread awareness. It rained a bit, we were thankful for previous yelpers who recommended long pants, long sleeves, walking shoes. Yes: dress for walking. Oh, the portapotties were not bad, but if you can, visit a restroom before you arrive. We got super lucky on our tour and saw all 6 species. My fave was the shy family of Gray wolves with their 2 new babies. Then the Maned Wolf came toward us to "check us out." See video. Yes, bring a proper camera w/ zoom to get best pix. Feel good about going here; by doing so we support these endangered creatures. They desperately need public support. Just keep in mind, they are wild animals, deliberately not overexposed to human interaction as the goal is to preserve their natural shy instincts (no, it's not a petting zoo. ) If I had thought about it, I would have brought binoculars, to help glimpse them. A few were easily seen, but of course it depends on the day. We really loved the private tour (got to see a few enclosures not accessible on the basic tour) and highly recommend it! read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. On one hand, they are doing great work for wolf conservation. We appreciate what they do here. The guides were very knowledgeable but they need to learn to adjust depending on what age they are talking too. You cannot talk to 8-12 year olds like they are adults. Droning on and on and expecting them to stay engaged is not going to happen. At some point, the guide had to know the kids were done with the lecture. Did that stop the guide? Nope, she insisted on finishing her lecture regardless if the kids were listening. I wish they had a more kid friendly tour. Not dumbing it down but simplify it and know when to stop talking! FYI, there is a lot of walking. Be sure you wear proper shoes. Bug spray would be smart as well. read more

Very cool tour, such a unique thing to do in the area. You get pretty close to the animals but keep in mind they won't always be out - the staff is very respectful of the them and if one seems distressed, will not have folks gawking closely at them. Only critique is that we had some VERY noisy children in our group and the tour guide gently asked them to stop a couple times but then kinda gave up and let them run around yelling. This definitely scared away some of the very shy critters so I wished they would have asked the parents to better control their kids. read more

Definitely not worth the price. I booked a private tour for my family. It was a hot day so we understood the animals may be hiding. We only saw 2 wolves from a very far distance, so basically we paid over $100 to walk a gravel road and see trees. The young tour guide told my 7 yr old son to sit and listen and not to grab the tree branch. Really?! Not to mention there are only port-a-potties on site. We were very disappointed. I can't review this, we tried on two different days to visit. The first day they were closed but we read on the gate that it was open Wednesday- Friday. Came back Wednesday and they had just had their last tour at 11:30am. It wasn't too clear but you have to call ahead to reserve a private tour, or there are public tours on Friday - Monday.. except the gate said they were closed Monday? I fly out in a couple of days. Awesome place. I would say it's very much an adult oriented experience. Kids would probably find it pretty boring. It's more scientific/researchy then catering towards children. Its more like a "hey were doing some cool and important stuff here and saving whole species and sometimes ecosystems", "if you wanna check it out, cool". We lucked out greatly on our Private Tour. We went at 9am and there was only my wife and I. All the different species of canid had just woke up, they were coming right up to the fence, playing with each other and we got to see a variety of behaviors. A painted dog regurgitation for their pack, a mounting attempt between 2 red wolves who's eventual mating is vital to their species survival and a howling session of a pack of Mexican Grey Wolves. Having said that, you could absolutely go there and see nothing if it's hot and the wolves want some shade or if your group is loud. Even that being the case your money would go to an amazing cause. As a bonus the whole place is built on an old World War 2 weapons depot so if you're into war history you get to see the remnants of a really cool place. Tons of old bunkers and the remnants of the train tracks they used to ship ammo and weapons to our boys overseas. read more

Last summer we came to the Endangered Wolf Center for a field trip. I enjoyed learning about the different types of wolves and the area that they are able to keep them at safely. The group I was with really enjoyed watching them as well. As a psychology major, it was interesting to find out how wolves learn and play with each other. We will definitely be going again this summer. read more

We recently went here for a private tour for a belated Valentines date and loved every second of it! Our tour guide, Erin H., was super knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Not a Zoo, better! Having taken both a private Day tour as well as attended a Wine and Cheese Howl and a Foxy Friday, I can say this is not for silly tourists that want to gawk at animals. This center's main purpose is the protection and repopulation of wolves, the public as patrons are secondary. With that said, they are not here to entertain you (although I promise that will happen) but to educate you. You will learn so much, you'll find yourself becoming passionate for the work they do and I have never left without multiple people asking how they can volunteer. This review is for the VIP Animal Interaction Tour at the Endangered Wolf Center. The cost is $100 a person, and it is absolutely worth every penny. I bought two tickets for my boyfriend and I as part of his Christmas present because he absolutely loves wolves. I was a bit nervous at first, not knowing how close you are able to get, or how much interaction you actually see while you're there. But it's really quite amazing. Tracy was the one who helped me purchase the gift certificate (because you have to schedule the tour in advance and I wanted to make sure we chose a date together) she mailed me the certificate and a few brochures to wrap for him. So even before we arrived, Tracy was so helpful and obliging. We scheduled our appointment on a Sunday, so there wasn't another soul in the enclosure apart from Tracy and the other 2 keepers. The tour lasted an hour and a half and was AMAZING. You actually get to go in past the double fencing and so there's just a chain link fence between you and these awesome animals. Almost all the animals were out and alert, and if some of the critters were hiding in their dens, Tracy would coax them out so we could see everyone in action. We saw a training session with the African Painted Dogs, got to throw avocado smothered toys over the fence to the Maned Wolfs, got to be feet away from red wolves and Mexican gray wolves. Plus, you learn all about their habits and the transition back into the wild for some of the species kept here. It's a great gift, and a really unique experience. Do it! read more

Love this place! I am biased, because I love wolves. It is really a great center and they play an integral part in the reintroduction of Mexican wolves into the wild. That being said, it is not like you will see these guys super close unless you get lucky because they do not want them to get too comfortable around people. BUT other species can be different, like I know they just got Fennec foxes and I bet you can get up close to them. The tours are just a great experience, go on a Predatour on a day with good weather and learn a little about about some wonderful species in the dog family. I also recommend going for a wolf howl! These are events that take place some Saturday evenings. It isn't so much about seeing but hearing, as the name might suggest! You sit around a fire and learn some history then go out and try to get the wolves to respond to you, and you can get a really beautiful chorus of howls from the different species! read more

This places is just plain "sweet". Took the local Scout pack #516 and pack #55 (4th graders) out to the Endangered Wolf Center (Sanctuary) across from Beaumont last Saturday. Ill post pics! The people genuinely care about this 60 acres set aside from Washington U for taking care of the most beautiful wolf pups on the planet (my opinion) . The facilities are all updated recently (purely by donation) and the staff is growing. The volunteers that help are super knowledgeable about the environment and how best to love and protect these sweet animals. I wish more people knew about it. Most importantly, these kids just loved it! Haven't seen them this synced yet about anything accept the trip to the police department during winter. That's another story. Great place for scouts. Takes 2 hours minimum for the day tour and class. Price is RIGHT at $8 per scout. Scout leaders are Free ;) We're all going to go back soon as we can for the Night time Wolf Howling event that they have. This place is really neat and kind of hidden when you think of things to do in and around the st. louis area. It's really cool to see the wolves up close and to learn about them. Great for field trips. Kind of pricy for how small it is, but the grandkids enjoyed it. read more

This is an awesome and oft forgotten nature conservatory out in Eureka. The place was founded in the 1970's to help promote the survival of the wolf, which has become endangered all over the world. All fees you are charged go directly to this effort, and after walking through the reserve, you will be glad you spent a little money to help protect these animals. You can either schedule a group tour or go for an individual tour at the center anytime. The tour includes a movie as well as other little jewels such as learning about the evolution of the wolf through fossils and paw prints and old pelts (ok, the pelts gross me out, but some people think these are cool so I figured I should mention them). The hours shift with the seasons so you are best off checking the website or calling ahead to make sure that tours are indeed happening. Upon reaching the center, you will be taught a lot of about the wolves at this sanctuary, told of their plight and endangerment, and then taken for a nice long hike to view them in their natural habitat. (FYI wear comfortable shoes, flip flops are not the appropriate footwear for this trek.) The private tour (what I took) is only $6 and only lasts an hour. Trust me, it's worth every dime and it's a cool and different way to spend your Saturday. I realize wolves are not the most loved creatures and largely, we fear them, but they are beautiful animals and should be protected. I am glad there are groups and reserves such as this one which help to educate the public and protect these animals at the same time. read more
