I just placed my Celestron order with Amazon after visiting Enerdyne in a very busy Suttons Bay yesterday. I like the founding owner (retired community college instructor, although he is quick to make intrusive remarks) and the store is always interesting, except that their current store policy on masking up is against my policy of "minding your own business buddy." I am vaccinated and don't need little brother telling me what to do as far as my personal life goes. Dick (the founding owner) is knowledgeable, but certainly not the end all of celestial information, (and most certainly not in the field of biochemistry , physics, nor medicine) and Amazon had the binoculars that I was looking for, delivered to my home. Enerdynes marxist store policy and my freedom collided this time, and they lost this sale to Amazon. While dining on the patio at VI Grill down the street I was doing impromptu surveys of a few passing visitors, and was told that no one was requiring rebreathers (face masks) anywhere in Suttons Bay except this establishment. I can't believe no one has reviewed the Enerdyne yet! Whenever I'm in Suttons I have to stop in - they have the coolest science toys, rocks and gemstones, and various other geeky fare. Lots of fun games and demos too! Remember the "water tornado" you can make by connecting two 2-Liter bottles? Well, they have a kit and an example set up - I could play with that thing for quite a while! We have been 20 plus years as summer residents of Leelanau County. During that time we usually visit Enerdyne a couple of times w our grandchildren. In years past we have had pleasant visits. The owner usually was eager to answer questions and to offer ideas. This year was completely different. This is one of my favorite stops on the Leelenau peninsula. Enerdyne is a terrific science and nature store. It's very well stocked with toys, experiment kits, and telescopes, all of which are a fitting addition to an area with so much natural beauty, and dark night skies. Items are suitable for kids, but there are a lot of adult science things too. The staff is helpful and very knowledgeable. We visit Suttons Bay 3-4 times a year, and we always stop at Enerdyne -- it's our go-to store for educational children's toys for our younger family members, and we've also bought neat stuff for ourselves like a whiz-bang weather station, a book on morel mushroom hunting that we've put to good use, and a Petoskey stone bud vase. The children's section is nothing short of awesome -- it reminds me of toy stores in the better sections of NYC, but with an emphasis on "thinking" and creative toys. And we also like the adult section, which is filled with everyday-science items like telescopes, birdwatching equipment, home weather equipment and so forth, plus Petoskey stone art, geodes and other interesting things. This summer the store demonstrated one of its butterfly-growing kits up at the counter -- pretty cool! read more

A great spot to hang out on a drizzly day in Northern Michigan. They have puzzles, books, games, etc. We bought Suspend, a balancing game that we'd played somewhere else and really enjoyed. I probably could have spent the better part of a day (and a paycheck) in here looking through everything. Whenever my wife and I visit Suttons Bay, we always stop by Enerdyne. This past June, however, my wife had a hidden agenda. We stopped in on my birthday, and she had arranged for the purchase of a Celestron 8" reflector telescope to aid my new interest in astronomy. Dick Cookman was ready with my new scope, and we spent time chatting about options, etc.. When it was all said and done, I left with a new scope, an excellent padded carrying case, and some additional tools to help learn my new hobby. Dick is an excellent source of knowledge and has been very helpful whenever I've called for advice. I strongly encourage folks to visit Enerdyne if they're anywhere near Suttons Bay.
