Very cute toy shop on the main drag of Sutton's Bay that specializes in more educational and/or…read moresciency types of offerings. It reminds me of the store Natural Wonders that was found in malls when I was a kid. I loved that shop so much, so browsing through Brain Storm feels wonderfully familiar. There are tons of toys out for playing and testing and they encourage you to explore. And there's plenty of stuff to look at like stuffed animals, rocks like petoskey stones, puzzles, educational offerings like butterfly gardens and dinosaur dig kits, plus arts supplies, board games, building sets, etc, etc. Plenty of good fun for both kids and the kids at heart! Decent gift shop with some unique giftware and home decor…read more I assume this shop is somehow connected to the Grandpa Shorter's gift shop down the street, just based on the name. I stopped in on vacation, mostly because the window display seemed kind of fun and interesting and the signage indicated they sold antiques. Well, I didn't see any antiques (total bummer), but I did spy some cute decorative home accents, crafting items, gift ware and seasonal stuff. Apart from that, the shop stocked a lot of "boutique" baby gear, too, including clothing, toys, accessories for the new mom, and stuffed animals. Admittedly, much of the baby gear was quite cute, but way overpriced considering it's for infants and they're only going to wear most of those clothes once or twice. I wasn't super impressed by the level of service, which seemed non-existent. Some items weren't clearly-priced, which I found a bit annoying. Other items just seemed highly marked up. While a lot of it was nice, I just didn't think it was that nice, you understand? More or less, I'd say I wasn't bowled over. They did have some lovely Petoskey Stone jewelry and similar trinkets along that line as well, however, but then every gift shop downtown has those. For a small boutique, it was crammed with merchandise, maybe a bit too much so. It was hard to really scope out anything very well when everything was a bit too crowded. I kept thinking I was going to knock over a tightly-placed display or something. On the other hand, what they did sell seemed to be an eclectic mix, coupled with some very cute things. Unfortunately, everything that I was interested in didn't seem to be clearly priced. What gives? The person behind the counter seemed too busy and was engaged in conversation, so I didn't bother to stick around any longer to find out what I wanted. I felt like I was interrupting the employee who was ensconced in a deep conversation with a friend. For me, bad service is a turnoff, so I walked out. If I'm up that way again, and I definitely plan to be, I'll probably give this tiny boutique a second look because it did seem promising, but if there's no real improvement on the service front, I'll just walk out empty-handed for the second time.

As kids we were given $1, and we could fill our bags with whatever goodies we desired! Every time I come back I remember how wide eyed and full of excitement all of use were to get a bag full of candy - oh the excitement, it was palpable! If only $1 would go so far today! They still have the huge penny candy counter and the same brown bags they have been using for ever. It truly means its summer once those bags are filled and wrappers are ferociously being removed on the sidewalk.

Why do I keep seeing racks of socks in so many stores. Is this a thing, that wasn't before?…read more It's fun to look at, but I know well after having so many Blue Q socks that they don't last long and wear thin and get holes quickly. The socks are the main things that caught our eye, or the Michigan periodic table T-shirt, two types of TP install and the emotional baggage bag as well.

This store is so much fun!…read more It's not Mackinac Island oriented per se... they did have Michigan stuff ... mostly a general gift oriented store. Lots of what I'd call, stocking stuffer things. Fun, snarky or unique gifts.... small and large. It's on the main shopping street of Mackinac Island... but a tad hidden. You have to walk into a tunnel/walkway back towards the giant turtle. Folks working here are friendly and quick to help.

They have lots of toys here! And best of all: Some of the toys are out on display, so you can play with them. Honestly, a toy store needs to have toys available to play with, and I'm glad that this one does. I was most impressed with the number of STEM toys that were available. My children are on the cusp of being at that age where they don't enjoy playing with toys as much as they used to. But, they still gravitate toward toys that challenge them and make them think. There are lots of those types of toys here. There are also lots board games, plushies, outdoor toys and lots of fun things to play with. The prices are what you'd expect on an island. This is a fun store to visit, even if you don't buy anything. (Although, I'm sure the people at Great Turtle Toys hope you do buy something.)
