I've been training here for 7 years and find Sensei's approach respectful, professional and works very well. Students are pushed to work hard and everyone progresses at their own pace. The atmosphere is welcoming but there's no place here for fooling around. You come to train. This style of karate is Gojo Ryu and focuses on kata. Sparring is a part of it but not the prime focus. We all have to work tomorrow so no one here is out to hurt you while sparring (like other dojos) in the city. Karate is not about fighting. Kids are expected to participate and show respect to Sensei and the other senior belts - just like they should. It's hard for some kids because they're not expected to show respect at home or at school. Sensei is often heard asking parents to not tell their kids to have fun, but rather to work hard. That very succinctly sums it up. HPMA has been here for 26 years (I'm not aware of any dojo in the city that has been in one location for that long) and going strong so I think bad reviewers here on yelp aren't seeing the whole picture. It almost felt like a daycare drop off for the parents in the area.. and sensei wouldn't say anything to the parents.. (back in my day our sensei 1. Would have made us do 25 laps around the dojo & 2. Would tell parents "class start at this time don't interrupt the class again or don't come to class" - abit harsh but I was late once had to do laps in front of everyone and was never late again..) I mean for every kid that is late and interrupting the class 4-5 times how is that fair on those kids who arrive on time and ready to start. Also for the adult class I felt his club is great for older adults who need easy going classes. As for price point it seems very reasonable for what he is offering..

That's what I was first reminded of when I first signed up my son here. Master Kang and his instructors motivated the kids and cared about making them better. Shortly thereafter, my older son (who initially swore he had no interest in martial arts because they make you do push ups and doing the same thing over and over again was hard and annoying) asked to join his brother for classes. Being heavier set and having quit multiple other martial arts training before, we didn't expect him to last more than a month but we proceeded. In a couple of months, not only was he still taking classes with his brother but he is even more engaged to do so. His kick height has doubled where it was before, his confidence has increased, he's more respectful and he's pushing himself harder and I credit the instructors and Masters for this. Seeing both my kids' improvements, my husband and I decided to sign up and learn with our children and unlike what we initially feared, we feel quite at home and Master Kang gave us the opportunity to take part in something important to our kids which became important to us too. Turns out the schedule they give you and the schedule posted online is barely followed. I was paying 68 biweekly to train alone basically expecting there would be a class but wasn't. Most ethical gyms understand when a member has to move 80kms away that they cannot train anymore and cancel their membership so long the member can provide proof that they moved. At matador they will send a collection agency that has lots of complaints for harassment after you with an inflated number and threats to take legal action. I am reviewing this matter and will figure out a way to settle this. But I will use every platform I can to share my experience. I should ask for my money back for having to workout alone because the scheduled given wasnt followed. The more the collection company harasses me the more I will expose it. Would never recommend this place, maybe the instructors but not the business itself.

This place has a number of after-school programs, evening classes for kids and adults, and seasonal camps, including summer, March break, and winter camps. The owner of this business is an incredible woman who endured horrific domestic violence from her former husband. She escaped and is safe. She built up so much strength that she started this martial arts business, which is thriving. On Saturday, I was here to support Grit Nutrition Hub's first official popup. The husband-wife duo have relaunched their business that offers healthy shakes, teas, and donuts. I was a regular customer when this business was ZeeV's Nutrition Studio. It was nice seeing half of the duo, Vamshi, and his crew whipping out protein donuts and teas for both adults (Captain America tea with caffeine) and kids (the same tea, minus the caffeine because we don't want hyped-up kids). Grit Nutrition also had protein donuts. They were bigger and fluffier than I had remembered them to be. The recipe had changed for the better and I loved sampling them. I ended up buying these items: - Captain America tea - Six protein donuts (three each of butter caramel and choco crumble) I paid with a credit card. I tapped and signed up for text message offerings. This facility is huge. I accidentally went into a bouncy room with my sandals on. A female staffer let me know that I needed to take them off. I apologized and ended up exiting the room instead. There are cubbies and places to take off your shoes. Better late than not knowing where! I found that the parents of a bunch of kids were tired and a bit stressed. I feel that they need some support. Perhaps this centre can help in this area. This martial arts place has plenty of parking. It's located in a large plaza. It is next door to Healthy Planet. The plaza has a Michaels, Scotiabank, and more.
