Boxed lunches and water were ready and waiting for us. We got in lots of skiing! Touring day was a full out adventure! Be ready to huff and puff! Will be back next year for sure!

We went skiing with Powder Addiction and had a great time. We met at the Jones Pass parking lot and…read morethe snowcat showed up right on time. There were 3 people working the trip, a driver and 2 guides. They had all of our avalanche gear ready to go in backpacks, lunch was on the snowcat waiting for us and they gave a nice complimentary water bottle. They gave us avalanche beacons and a showed us how to use them, tested them to make sure they worked, and gave us a safety briefing along with an explanation of how the 2 guides work together to make things as safe as possible - I definitely felt super safe in the hands of the guides, it was clear that they knew what they were doing. The snowcat was very comfortable and they are very focused on customer service at all times. Now, to the skiing...... Great guides. We were skiing on a day that had interesting conditions. Being a "ridge rat" at Loveland I was well aware of a storm that came in a few days earlier and blew most of the snow off the high mountains leaving not much but wind blown snow. That was certainly the conditions we were seeing everywhere, but the guides had ideas and they were really good ones. They knew their terrain very well and found us some powder that ranged from decent to awesome - mostly awesome. We did have to do some hiking off of the cat to get to the stashes, but it was well worth it and not a big deal. Being a "bit older" I took the hikes kind of slowly, but never felt pressured, and was always reassured that it was no big thing by the guides. We took 8 or 9 runs. Here is the fun part - we never took the same run twice - even though there were some I really wouldn't have minded to ski again, the guides stepped it up with every run. Not only was each run different, but we were the only people who had skied on any of them - first tracks all day long. The runs were super fun - a mix of wide open and somewhat tight. My nephew who skied with us and loves the trees was in heaven. I like more wide open areas and i was in heaven too. Again, the guides were great - one would ski down the run first to do a safety check and/or set a left or right hand line. The second guide stayed with the group and they communicated via radio where the safe lines were and we skied down one at a time. Once the group had all skied down the second guide would clear the hill and we were back on the cat. Very little time was wasted but the guides were keenly aware of conditions and potential hazards and safety was clearly job #1. Finding Powder was job #2 with a bullet and these guys did a great job of finding great snow on a day that I was concerned was going to be very difficult. Super cold beer at the end of the day was very welcome. :-) I have to say that I was really impressed with the entire experience. Great people, great terrain, great snow, great time. Highly recommended.

Rooms were clean and well maintained, and had all of the basics you would need. Everything related to a ski day was nice here - had storage for skis and boots so that you didn't have to bring them to your room. In the morning they have a nice spread for breakfast including fruit and cereal, and also have some hot items including eggs, toast, sausage, and bacon. Definitely enough to get you fueled and ready for the day. Then there is a van they run that takes you right to the gondola leaving at 8:30, 9, 9:30. Taking the first van gets you there right for the start of day. And you don't have to worry about parking, walking, and paying at the resort. Rides back were at 3:15 and 4:15 which gave plenty of time at the mountain. I didn't get a chance to try the hot tub but it looked nice. There were some cozy spots in the lounge with fireplaces to sit and relax. And a ping pong table that a few kids were using to stay entertained. Parking here was convenient, and the location is good; very close to everything in Winter Park. Overall I was very impressed with this stay. I will definitely look here first when looking for a place to stay in Winter Park moving forward. I thought it was a fair value, and the amenities made for easy ski days where all I had to do was get dressed and show up to the van on time, and not worry about anything else.

My impressions of this park are probably impacted by the fact that they desperately need snow. (As…read moremost ski resorts out here do). However other factors also influenced my impression. They need better access to maps, both the posted sign size and paper maps. For example, a trail map at bottom of each lift and at top of lift would be good too esp when more than 1 lift ends at same location. And why not put a map of ski village buildings on the trail map to help with orientation. I wish they would have groomed the trails more so in the morning so snow would have been fresher. It just seemed to make it more icy by grooming at night. Since many trails were closed people were condensed into those trails that were open. Squeezing more people into a smaller area will course make lift lines crowded but also puts more traffic on the slopes. The lift lines were absolutely ridiculous on the weekend. I didn't pay that much for lift ticket to repeatedly stand in lift line for 20 minutes. Also it would have been nice to have an increase in ski patrol monitoring some of the trails to discourage the aggressive behavior including the boarder who purposely ran into me and knocked me down. (When they laugh and keep going you know it was on purpose) We purchased lift tickets months ago so I don't remember the details of the process except that it wasn't straightforward. I ordered lift tickets for both myself and my husband so assuming I did the same thing each time but no he got a pass with early up access and I didn't. Weird. Okay here are some positives: I do like the availability of restrooms throughout the resort including up on some slopes. That is very nice. I appreciated sharing the slopes with amputees and individuals using wheelchairs. It is nice to see the inclusivity. I also really enjoyed going up to Sunspot lodge in the evening for sunset. That was very fun.

The Good: - Super nice owners and staff!…read more- Cute and eclectic building - Good location near bus stop and walking distance to most things in town - Price was reasonable - Hot water was fine, 4 ppl took showers without an issue The So-So: - Noise: thin walls, if people are loud or exterior doors open/close, you def hear it. Being close to the road, you hear trucks, etc - FYI... this place is old, not 'fancy' and even a bit odd. It was Clean, so not gross but def old and things were not "perfect" decor wise or function (sink was a little odd but we made it work). I knew this would be the same reading other reviews and it didnt both me so I'm not deducting stars for it, but it may not be the style people who are looking for a Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Marriott or mid-end AirBnB style place (which is what I usually stay at) may want. The Not Good: - The only real negative was the beds. Our room had 2 Queen beds and could not get good sleep on either one. They were not supportive and I just tossed/turned all night, waking several times.  It didnt help that any small movement (even from a 5 yr old) was amplified by the springs and the bed was bouncy - which woke me up. I travel a lot, sleep on a lot of different beds... dont have this problem anywhere else. if they get new beds I'll stay there again... I doubt I will. My wife definitely will not, she was not happy (yes, I paid the price for that).

The xc skiing at Devil's Thumb has always been a favorite for us, as far back as the 70's when it was just a rustic ski trail system with a small nordic supply shop. In recent years it became a full fledged resort with lodging where we have often stayed. We have also stayed in Winter Park, about 15 minutes away and driven over to ski. But we have now found our new favorite option. This is such a lovely place, both the facility and the charming staff. It is a better price value for us than some of the other options in the area, yet more than a simple motel in town. You know, like Goldilocks, "just right." I especially want to note that the (included) breakfast that host John cooks for the guests was wonderful, some sweet, some savory, warm, homemade, natural and ample for the start of even an hearty ski day. They take note in advance of special food needs and serve with a choice of time options. The log style of the building is rustic but nicely furnished. The rooms are well designed and furnished with high quality linens and have lots of storage as some guests stay for weeks. The views from each room are very pretty, some to the Continental Divide, some to the woodland. Every single staff member was friendly and helpful. The central lounge area was large, comfortable, attractive and clean and with a central fireplace. There are also some other smaller gathering areas to sit and talk or read if you wish to be outside your room. And there are also some family and dog friendly cabins on site if you want more than a bedroom. Personally, the rooms in the main inn are just right for my needs. We will absolutely be back. It is convenient to local xc skiing and also just a 15 minute drive past the Winter Park Resort and not far at all from several quality dinner options. We met other guests using the lodging for all of these reasons.
