FINALLY, a place on my list that lives up to the hype! Location: Centro Storico. The place: Very urban, very chill. I found it to be simplistic in terms of decor, which I liked very much. Like most places I've been to in Rome, it's not very big - and it has quite a reputation so you either want to go at lunch (before the businessmen and locals arrive) - say, 11:30 or so, or around 2:30ish. The food: Jesus! So, after trekking through the Colosseo, the Roman forum, Palatine Hill and the Capitoline Museum, I was hungry. I also knew that this meal would be a lunch/dinner combo. I started with the salumi board that consisted of five local salumi. Did they tell me where each was from or what the differences were? No, they did not - so I can't educate you beyond telling you that the Prosciutto was bloody good. And so was the darker salumi. All give we're great but those two were definitely my favorites. Now, the board could easily make for a good starter for 2-3 people. I ate most if it due to the above-mentioned trekking and the fact that I refused to waste 12€ worth of food. As a main, I had the Amatriciana. I can't recall the pasta but it was short and not too thick. Anyway, let me first say that this was the first dish that was served hot. Bonus points for that. As far as the dish goes... The pasta was perfectly Al Dente, and the sauce was bloody amazing. Excellent. Magnifico. Delicioso. The tomatoes were unlike any that I have ever tasted outside of Italy, and the bacon was just perfect. This dish was perfect. So I plan to go back. Service: The waiter was nice and sort of friendly. But, I've come to the conclusion that restaurant wait staff just don't like tourists. There is an obvious difference with how locals vs. tourists are treated, though I don't know if this is a general thing or because I'm traveling solo. Anyway, the service was decent. Price point: This will depend on what you order; if you only have a main. You're under 20€ (depends on the dish). My starter, main, half litre of water and Cappuccino cost 28€ which isn't bad at all, if you don 't mentally convert to Canadian dollars! A definite place to check out when in Rome. read more

Bit expensive and snooty for us. Don't try to ask for tap water- you'll get a dirty look (just go for the minerale naturale). Lunch was 30-35 euros for two people- and all we ordered was a primi (pasta) and secondo (pork dish with apples) to share between the two of us. I liked that the staff was happy to divide the portions so we could share. The food was good. The rabbit ragu on fettucine was good. The pork with spinach and apples was good, but really needed a little more apple to balance the flavors. Portions are small- they do the tiny bit of something on a huge plate thing. For a full meal for two people you really need to order more stuff (I'd recommend probably around 50 euros for lunch for two). And you get charged for bread just for sitting next to it. We (erroneously) thought you could skip the "bread charge" by not eating from the basket (the bread in the baskets seems to always be stale anyway) but we had to pay for the bread anyway. read more

When in Rome . . . sample the local food and drink. Enoteca Palatium enables you to do just that. The enterprise is run and managed by the Agricultural Marketing Board of the Lazio region, the region within which Rome sits. A very good job they do too. Reservations are a must as it is justifiably popular with Romans of a trendier bent than most - tourists rarely 'get' this place. The food is great but perhaps best of all, so is the wine, and there is a lot of it! Prices are surpisingly reasonable for what is a smart establishment in a smart part of town (wardrobe note - smart but casual is OK but avoid jeans if you can as you will stand out for the wrong reasons). The Piazza di Spagna, Via Condotti and sundry other high end places are a stone's throw from here. I love it. It's a 'must go to' every time I visit Rome. read more

During our short stay in Rome the Palatium quickly established itself as our favourite place for both food and a glass of wine. I had been tipped off about the Paladium by a couple of Italian friends who live in London and run their own excellent supper club (look out for the Back Door Kitchen if you are in town) so I knew it would be good. The surprise was just how good. Serving only food and wine from the Lazio region (which you can also buy to take away) the Paladium is one of the best value top notch restaurants I have ever have had the pleasure of dining in. There are no reservations at lunchtime so to be sure of a table you need to time your arrival. Being near to the Parliament, and in the middle of the primo shopping area, the Paladium attracts a well healed crowd for the lunch service we looked slightly out of place in our shorts and tee shirts amongst the suits and pretty dresses but no matter. The locals turn up at 1pm or just after so if you arrive at 12.45 you will have the place to yourself. In the evening you are going to need to make a reservation we watched many a dismayed tourist being turned away and locals, who are obviously a bit more in the know, nursing a glass of wine at the bar waiting for a table to become free. Again it's a pretty smart crowd at night so if you want to dress up you are going to fit right in. We were very lucky during our stay as they changed the menu so we got to sample a whole heap of good things from the kitchen. It's worth noting that they are more than happy to let you order one dish and share it between two which is great as it gives you a fighting chance of making your way through all the courses. The pasta dishes are outstanding; cooked to perfection with sublime sauces. I had a rigatoni carbonara which will live long in the memory while B raved about her spaghetti with sheep cheese. The secondo courses are just as good and really highlight the skill in the kitchen and the fine ingredients. Rabbit seems to always feature on the menu and there was a very good ballontine with peppers and polenta. On the fish front a stand out dish was the mackerel stuffed with escarole, raisin and olives in a delicate genzano crust. Try to leave room for dessert because they are also very good. My personal favourite was the tiramisu which bore very little resemblance to the over sweet versions that get served up in the UK. If you are a wine lover then Palatium should be top of your must visit list when you are in Rome. There is a good selection by the glass starting at 4EUR and if you have a look at the wine list, actually a lengthy book, you could find yourself lost in oenophile heaven. We relied on the staff, who we found to be very friendly and helpful if you make the effort to show an interest, to help us find a good match with the food and they came up with some great choices. I think that the most expensive bottle they selected for us was 14EUR. We left Rome on the Friday night to get the overnight train to Sicily and popped in for one last drink and to pick up a bottle of chilled Moscato Terracina Doc Spumante Secco 09 Sant' Andrea for the journey. We said some very fond farewells to Rocco and the crew sad to be leaving but very pleased that we had pleasure of their food, wine and good company for the past week. . read more

I've been here 5 times it's not hip or chill anymore. It has a Mc Donald 's atmosphere .We spent plenty for four people ,we were rushed.I had to tell the waiter to slow down I didn't want everything to arrive at once.We had many courses and 2 bottles of wine.We were sat next to a group of twelve with children who turned the restaurant into a play ground.It was so loud we could hardly hear.The management dont care they are employees of the state the restaurant isn't what it use to be.All they could say is that they were sorry ! read more

Great place for our first meal out in Rome. We had appetizers and pasta. The standout though was fried anchovies and zucchini, lightly breaded. That one dish was as good as it gets. Caccio e pepe for me was really good. The wife's carbonara was mediocre. Pasta was too hard - not yet al dente - and we didn't care for the flavor. Overall though great experience and we would go back. Perhaps tonight for those anchovies. read more

Meh. I definitely had better food in Roma for cheaper (try La Fontana, obica mozzarella bar, or Life!). The service wasn't bad but it was nothing special. You need a reservation or expect to be turned away. Personally I wouldn't come back. read more

This was a Katie Parla (parlafoods) rec and our first meal in Italy. I can honestly say it was one of our best. This is a modern place that I probably would have walked right by, but the handmade simple pasta, riccotta flan with tomato jam, and other items we ate were incredible. The wines were inexpensive and high quality. Our server was very sweet and patient with our language barrier. He spoke very good english, which was helpful for picking the best menu items. Definitely worth a trip if you want great Roman food with a slightly chic flair. read more
