So as we have detailed int he past, finding the correct exterior lighting for an Mid Century Modern Eichler home is less about having fun adn more about persistence. Our quest took us to Ensler lighting. What a fantastic little store. It was such a welcome relief from the same old selections. Tons of vintage lights and more importantly the owner was super friendly and helpful. Ensler will now be on our regular rotation as for our ongoing quest.

Quick reliable repairs - I've taken in several vintage lamps and always done a great job.

I love vintage lamps and have an embarrassingly robust collection. Seeing as how most of my lamps are 50+ years old by the time I acquire them, they've usually got little boo-boos here and there, sometimes even missing pieces. Ensler Lighting is my lamp doctor. I first discovered Ensler about a year ago when I purchased a toleware floor lamp elsewhere that was held together with wire hangers. I had no idea exactly which parts were missing, so I went to Ensler at the recommendation of the folks at nearby Urban Ore. The nice gentleman at Ensler examined the lamp and pointed out sections that had been retrofitted. He then explained how the lamp was originally configured, and on-the-spot found new parts to work around the retrofit. Since then, I've been back several times with other lamps that were missing various pieces, and one that I thought was irreparably wobbly but simply required a different globe. Just this past weekend I went in to claim a lamp that I had been yearning for since I saw it there in March. The same nice gentleman was there and tapped into my weakness, showing me another lamp he suspected I would also like. And, boy, was he right. I practically floated out of there with my two beautiful "new" lamps. He comped all the bulbs, including the special ones that the first lamp required. Made me feel appreciated as a customer. It makes me happy to see the steady flow of customers whenever I'm there. This is the kind of independent store that deserves our support!

Really cool French wall lamps . . .

Nice enough owner but also dropped the ball when I emailed a follow up order. I had tried to buy a shade for a lamp I bought up the street.

Beautiful custom cabinets at a reasonable price and with great workmanship and follow through…read more I finished a custom remodeling, based on designs from a very meticulous Japanese-American architect. The architect had very specific instructions on the type of seams, colors, door directions and relative placements of various drawers and cabinets. Ideal cabinetry was great from the beginning. They provided a versatile color palette that allowed the architect to choose an aesthetically pleasing set, and worked with me and the architect to translate the architectural drawings into their shop drawing. They worked throughout with me and the architect to adjust a few aspects of the design that could not be made as design due to the existing site conditions. Overall, very nimble and flexible. Their crew is polite and clean and they go out of their way to make sure their clients are happy and satisfied. Any rough edges that we encountered, the crew came back in a timely manner and addressed it. And above all, their prices are very reasonable compared to other custom cabinet makers with a similar level of versatility and quality. See the photos yourself and judge. Any guest that we have is always giving compliments on the beauty of the design and quality of the execution. I will definitely work with them again

As a customer of Flowerland for several years, writing the following brings me no joy. I was there…read morethe other day and saw a pair of gauntlet gloves. There was no price. I asked; the woman behind the counter looked it up and answered: $42. That seemed a bit expensive, so I checked online. While checking, the same woman comes over, sits down next to me, and asks, "Can I tell you something? Small business can't compete with Harbor Freight," then gets up and leaves. First, her statement to me was incredibly condescending. I'm almost 60 years old and know how businesses large and small work. She didn't need to scold me like I'm 5 years old. (FYI, Harbor Freight doesn't even sell any gauntlet gloves.) Did she honestly think she'd either guilt or shame me into buying their gloves? Did she think that was a good tactic to engender customer loyalty? Second, I'm all for -- and do -- support local businesses, even if it means paying a little bit more. As I said initially, I've been a customer of Flowerland's for several years. In general, if an item seems expensive, I check online not only to compare price, but to read reviews, in this case, for the particular brand of gloves. If an item has 4- and 5-star reviews, perhaps it's worth the extra price and I have made such purchases in the past. I've certainly knowingly paid more for their 1-gallon plants averaging around $22 whereas I know that many places sell 1-gallon plants for around $15. Third, in this case, this particular brand of gloves was about four times the typical cost of other gauntlet gloves I saw online. As I said, sometimes I'm willing to pay more to support a local business, but that does not mean I'm willing to do so unconditionally at any price -- especially for things like gloves that, no matter how good quality they are, will eventually wear out. Gloves are disposable, commodity items. (The seams at the fingertips are always the first part to wear out.) If that woman is independently wealthy, works at Flowerland just for fun, and pays any price any small business asks, well good for her. Some of us, myself included, are retired and are living off savings. From now on, I'll stick to Berkeley Hort, Orchard Nursery, and others where I have never been condescended to by any member of staff. Oh, and Berkeley Hort's plant prices tend to be better anyway.
