This is where I currently attend for my undergraduate and masters degrees. I am in my final year…read more There are a variety of reasons I decided to rate the university the way I did. On a positive note, the university of Cincinnati has a campus that is stunning with a variety of architectures from classical to modern and everything in between but somehow it works well. The campus feels like a small city since the population on west (main) campus is so large on about a square mile campus. Around campus is burnet woods which is a medium sized park and on the other side of burnet woods is downtown Clifton which has a graeters, movie theater, stores, boutiques and bars. All within walking distance. On the other side of campus are two parks within walking distance Fairview and Bellevue park. All of these parks are something that allow for students to get off campus and relax. Besides the parks Calhoun street and short vine both have bars, stores, restaurants, music venues and more and are right across the street from campus. The surrounding area has a ton of amenities. Regarding the academics of the school. I am provided with three different advisors for academic undergraduate, co-op and academic graduate. My undergrad advisor changes frequently which means they never know everything they need to know. Thankfully I always have been able to find someone who knows an answer to my question. I have had some bad experiences where an advisor was forceful and rude that I couldn't do something when I knew that I could and did end up doing the thing they told me I couldn't. Making sure to read the handbook for your program can be helpful in this way. Overall, most of my advisors have been excellent besides that hiccup. Research is something that is emphasized at the school and is heavily funded. This allows for a lot of opportunities in a variety of research labs. Co-op is something that is required of a lot of students and is something that UC is know for. This allows students to get off campus work experiences that look really good on resumes but also provide students with skills they need to perform well in industry or wherever they plan to go after school. The most negative thing about the school is safety. Although it is a lot better than it has been in the past (from what I have heard) there is always some sort of safety concern. Luckily UC has its own police department and is quick to respond to all of the help poles around campus but in the surrounding area there are places that should be avoided at night. I have heard of people being stood up. For safety and my advisor situation I took off a star. Besides those experiences I have loved the university and all the experiences it has to offer. It is located right near downtown Cincinnati and has shuttles that can take you downtown. It also always has something going on whether that be sports games, festivals, or other student led activities. Something is always going on.

Career opportunities -- wonderful. Mental health, life balance, sanity, relationship building?…read moreUh... maybe not the best path to choose. My time in Cincinnati was not my favorite, and I will have to say the culture of some DAAP classes, not all of course, did not help. The faculty truly does care for the growth of students, but I think a lot of work must be done to ensure proper protocols are followed to maintain emotional safety (at-least for me). I also think DAAP could improve on many technology advancements in comparison to SCAD, RISD, RIT, etc. But I also understand as a public university, it's a bit different. DAAP is amazing though for study abroad opportunities and the foundational skills I've learned are incredible. I truly feel prepared for any future career in Graphic Design. Their co-op program is very essential for upward growth. But with the good comes the bad and competition is very, very, very, high. Very stressful. And very cut throat. The way they run their co-op program reminds me a bit of a reality tv show - which prompts students to work their hardest, but also creates this intense and at times elitist atmosphere. Also - DAAP class of 2019 was not diverse. The majority of students are from or around the area (from Ohio, etc) and are not considered minorities. It's a wonderful college to advance your career, but just understand going into art school, for someone who is from a small town, as an Asian minority woman with no siblings and a single parent, it's tough. Cincinnati definitely toughened me up, that's for sure.

Procedure prices…read more I'm so done with UC. I was trying to schedule a procedure recently and they wouldn't tell me what my cost obligation would be. I refused to schedule the procedure until I knew what it would cost me out of pocket. The staff just kept cluelessly saying "well...it's usually covered..." Not good enough folks. After several back and forth phone calls trying to establish prices one person finally told me they wouldn't tell me the price until after I chose a date because procedures are different prices on different days. I asked if I could choose the most affordable day for me and they said no. So it wasn't "probably going to be completely covered", huh? So I have to hope I randomly choose a day I can afford? I chose to not do the procedure with them. This isn't the first time UC has been a headache about procedures. They once CANCELLED a surgery of mine at the last minute (less than 24 hours before) because some fool in the office misread paperwork and thought I was uninsured. I was insured, everything was approved, they just screwed it up because they had no idea what they're doing. People at my work rearranged vacations so I could fit in this surgery and UC got me in so much trouble. It was a diagnostic surgery that they delayed. So my diagnosis was delayed. Then they lost all of the records of the surgery. The photos, notes, and reason for my diagnosis, all "missing". They still had the bill though, so for years I had to pay for a surgery that supposedly didn't happen with supposedly no results. So, they delayed my diagnosis and severely delayed my treatment. I have over a dozen more examples. Don't bother with UC, go anywhere else.

My professors are behind me every step of the way, whether that be in research, filling in my knowledge gaps, or simply a ear to listen. The Psychology department is outstanding & has helped me gain internships every summer for the last 2 years, one in Ohio & one in New York. The opportunities I have at this school are unmatched to what I was offered at Louisville. I feel I know all of my professors personally. Smaller class sizes allow for a student based discussion approach rather than pushing curriculum. I can ask questions through lecture & I feel professors take time to throughly answer them to the best of their ability, ensuring I understand what is being explained to me. Whether it be extra study materials, additional office hours, or impromptu to drop ins my professors are always available to me. I find this the most valuable aspect of my time here at NKU. We have an extensive library, with study rooms, quiet floors, as well as social floors. The library as has an Einstein's Bagel which has coffee, bagels, sandwiches, pastries, etc. The rec center is state of the art with many classes for guided fitness goals, a huge pool (they even have lifeguarding as a class!), a hot tub, a sauna, basketball courts, racket ball courts, a bouldering wall, and an indoor track ! The biggest short coming of the university , hands down is parking. Other than that I love my school. #NorseUp
