Our experience was a months-long ordeal of incompetence, project abandonment, and a complete failure of professional communication that put our building's safety in an unresolved state. Our 4-unit condo building needed to upgrade our fire alarm system to add active monitoring. We engaged International Fire, and the first thing they required was a full "Annual Fire Alarm Testing" for a fee of $450.00 just to diagnose the issue and provide a quote for the actual work. We paid this, and in December 2024, our HOA approved their proposal to complete the upgrade. That is when the problems started. Their installation team came to our property on at least three separate occasions and failed to complete the job each time, citing the need to return, but never following up each time until I came back asking for the status. After their last visit in early July 2025, we were told the main office would follow up with a new plan. They never did. For nearly two months, we were completely ghosted by their service department. My multiple emails and calls were ignored. We were stuck in a loop with their accounts receivable person, who continued to send invoices for other small items but could provide no information on the actual project we had hired them for. Eventually, we sent a final formal email giving them a five-day deadline to provide a resolution. They ignored that as well. Most concerning is their lack of local expertise. Despite being a San Francisco-based company, they failed to inform us about a critical, past-due city safety ordinance (the SFFC 1103.7.6.1 "Pillow Test") that our building was out of compliance with. A truly professional and diligent local contractor should have identified this immediately. We paid them $450 for an inspection that led to a necessary safety upgrade, and then they completely abandoned the project, leaving us to start over from scratch. Do not make the same mistake we did. Find a different contractor who is professional, competent, and actually communicates with their clients.

The part was an obsolete one, for which I'd purchased a comparable replacement online. However, I hadn't realized that the part didn't come with bushings. When I tried to get the bushings out of the old cylinders, they were stuck. After a tremendous amount of time trying to dislodge them myself, I thought I'd need to find replacement bushings. I'd already struck out at a different hardware store prior to going to Discount Builders. Similarly, Discount Builders also didn't have what was essentially a specialized bushing designed just for the old obsolete cylinder. Most employees would've just stopped at nope we don't have it. However, Max was incredibly resourceful and skilled, and took the cylinders to a work area in the store and spent perhaps the next half hour getting the bushings out. Miraculous! My rowing machine is now reassembled and working great. Thanks to Max! That is truly above and beyond customer service! Love this store!

When a visiting cat turned the stair runner into a scratching post, I called our salesman, Gregory Bagett, who arranged for their installer to come to the house to fix the problem. I informed them of the issue and it took months to remedy. They tried sewing the pieces together but I wasn't happy with the visible seam, so they gave me the options of a refund or choosing another remnant. I expressed that I didn't want to use more time coming back to the store to choose another carpet- I had been to the store 4 times at that point, including dropping it off once I realized it was cut improperly, and another time to view how it looked sewed together. Then they offered to find the same rug at their San Carlos location, which I would have appreciated more had they been proactive. I followed up with the salesperson (Gregory) several times with no response until I finally reached a manager who told me it was cut and would be delivered from the San Carlos store the following week. I had to continually chase down updates until I reached another store manager who had no clue about my order. I finally was able to get my issue escalated to the general manager who notified me the carpet had never been cut or transported. I asked for some type of compensation to make up for the terrible experience and got no response, but he did end up providing delivery and installation for free. The only positive process of this entire process was the delivery and installation (thanks to those two men whose names I didn't catch). I made my purchase on April 1, let them know about the incorrect cut on April 23, and it wasn't remedied until June 11. Major headache!! I had planned to purchase another custom rug from them but now I'm too turned off to do business with them.
