Having said that, some of the best nights of my life have been at Corp. I've been going to Resistanz festival every year for the last four, and if I'm in Sheffield for any other reason I inevitably wind up there. Every time, and I do mean every time, I see my friends get obliterated, hook up, and dance like maniacs. There is some strange bayou magic to its foetid bathrooms. Yes, you may lose your kicks, but beyond a shadow of a doubt, the price is worth paying. Incredible bands, fantastic DJs, a friendly clientele, and my favourite accent in all of Yorkshire combined with some of the best alternative music going and cheap drinks. If you're in your stompiest boots (and you should be), what's not to like?

I kinda have to be honest and review it as a facility rather than the quality of the individual nights I've had here.... I will explain.. Firstly I should mention I don't live in Sheffield and have probably been to Corp in the region of 8 to 10 times. Some of those were for gigs, some for club nights and three times for Resistanz festival. It's relatively easy to find in the depths of Sheffield (situated about 5 minutes from The Moor) and puts on a plethora of gigs and events throughout the year. I actually really like the exterior. It gives the feeling of a dirty warehouse club and is spot on for what you'll find inside. There are tables outside which come in very useful if you're at a gig (and the courtyard isn't open). You can't take your drinks outside the venue, but this is perfectly fair (as there are plenty of places to stash on the inside of the door). This particular time around, the smell of vomit really hit me as I went in through the dingy corridor. In fact, I had to go straight outside again so as not to be sick myself. I understand that with the cheap drinks prices and the clientele it tends to attract on certain nights that people probably do drink to excess, it's just never been as bad as any other venue I've ever been to (and that includes Snobs in Birmingham!). Once you get used to the smell, you can hit the bar. On a club night the drinks are ludicrously cheap (70p a single vodka and coke)... That is, if you can call it Vodka. I steered clear on my last visit and stuck to the £1.50 cans of Cider (which my body seemed to thank me for). There are 3 rooms inside (side room, main room and upstairs) and each comes with it's own bar. There is also a separate club area (called Local Authority) attached to the venue and a very large courtyard. Now... If you're a visitor to this venue, you know I HAVE to mention the state of the toilets. They should come with a health warning, seriously. If you have a toilet seat, a lockable door, toilet roll AND handwash; you are in the minority. Normally you might get a max of two of these essential elements. On a side note, Local Authority seems to actually have half decent toilet areas so the venue really needs to pull it's socks up on this. The sound can be quite hit and miss for live acts. It's been excellent for some gigs and terribly poor for others. It can really depend on the sound tech's whether you get an enjoyable aural experience. However... I guess sometimes it just doesn't matter. When you've had enough 70p vodkas on a club night, you probably wouldn't notice. Another quick warning; watch your drink! Everyone should always be wary in clubs, but I've seen spiking quite prominent on some nights at this venue. The security are actually pretty good and seem to keep an eye on everything, but I guess that says more about the clientele that use this venue on selected nights. Oh! And make sure you take enough cash out with you! There is a cash machine in the venue, but it was charging £2 for withdrawals last weekend (which could really hit you if you're on a budget). Finally, no goffick's life would be complete without at least one trip to Corp. I have always had a great time here (despite the toilets and the smell), but that's largely down to the nights I frequent. Don't let this review put you off visiting as the atmosphere can be electric (and worth suffering all the other stuff). Go, visit, enjoy and write your own review.

Personally it's not really a place I'd make a regular hang out... Located in the centre of the city, this late night club gets a lot of foot traffic from the Printworks and also because of its late license. Every night there's a different DJ entertaining a predominantly 20-30 crowd of young professionals and students. It's a fun place to start or end you night, but there isn't really anything outstandingly original that makes it stand out from what else is on offer in Manchester. What especially turns me off is the 'exclusive private booths' (in black faux-leather no less..eww) and 'VIP' area, to buzz terms that send me running for something a little more down to earth.

They play r'n'b, hip hop and some soul. They have lots of leather seats and a VIP area for those who want to feel important. They also have a toilet attendant and perfumes, sweets and other make up you can use for a small fee!! It is pretty busy on weekends and there is normally a pretty good buzz to the place. It was still some exotic…read morefar-flung suburb to me, as I rarely made it any further out of the city centre than Fallowfield. As a student in Manchester, however, you cannot fail to have heard about the Didsbury Dozen - a pub crawl targeting 12 of Didsbury's watering holes. I personally never did the dozen, but I knew several people who did. There are several pubs that welcome the pub crawlers with open arms, several that would probably rather they weren't there but couldn't afford to kick them out, and a couple who are totally against the concept and will not allow pub crawlers onto their premises. Fletcher Moss is an example of the latter, and I had heard stories about the nasty spoil-sport of a manager at this pub. However, five years on, and I am much older and wiser. I appreciate good beer and music that will not drown out your conversation. On setting foot in the Fletcher Moss I was not at all surprised that the management had refused to serve pub crawlers. It is a quiet CAMRA pub with no loud music and no football. Some would class this as a boring pub, but the older I'm getting the more I find myself enjoying visits to places like this.

Whether this was a good/bad/average experience I'm not sure - but it was definitely an experience! Put it this way, on a Saturday night - the main pub actually seems to become a dance floor playing all the classics of soul while middle/later age peeps put on their glad rags and dance around living the dream like John Travolta in Saturday night fever. And why not... What's weird is that everyone is still just sat around drinking their pints of Hydes casually while the queue for the bar merges with the 'dance floor' - put it this way, one bump out of the queue and you could find yourself doing the waltz with a mid 50's blonde in a matter of moments. Beer is fairly average Hydes stuff (Summer Ale was best of a bad bunch) - but for entertainment value and a sense of WTF - this was a cool night out.

Highly patterned carpets, ample seating upholstered predominantly with red velour and brown corduroy, un-subtle lighting and chalkboards on most of the walls. I suppose that these elements are all part of the quintessential British boozer, but without getting too 'Al Murray' about it, I have to say that I quite like these sorts of place and the Bulls Head isn't too bad. A reasonable range of fairly standard beers is on offer, and at quite reasonable prices. A pint of London Pride and a reasonable G&T came in at under £5 which seems pretty good to me! The atmosphere isn't bad either... a fairly predictable range of tunes being played on the sound system, friendly staff and a reasonable bunch among my fellow punters. They offer a wide range (okay, a predictable range) of pub-grub, and are trying to embrace the 21st century with a Facebook presence so trying to appeal to a wider market maybe than the average daytime drinker who flits between the pub and the betting shop... So in summary, not the best place in the world, but certainly not the worst, and I'd definitely pop in there again for an early evening drink on a blustery winters evening (like I did last night!)

They set up the stage right in the bar and you sit around on stools, the most relaxed venue ever!! I've been to four gigs there and always stayed after the gig to have a couple of drinks with the band! The drinks are stupidly cheap and as Alison has already mentioned, there's a good range of beers. Not far from a Metrolink station so easy to get to from town and it makes it easy to carry on the night too!

They have a number of specialist and national beers on tap as well as in bottles and bottles of alcopops and shots of spirits. The DJ area is pure genius ... The bridge of the original starship enterprise with Gerard the Dalek protecting it from the side. In the left corner there is a tardis that lights up and the ceiling is full of models from sci if shows like battle star galactica and Star Trek. Near the toilets there is a number of arcade machines and there are arcade tables near the tardis where you can play classic games such as pacman and donkey kong for a small fee. To top it all off there is also a pinball machine present. The bar snacks range from sweets to nuts and crisps and they also provide a simple, classic, student type menu. Through out the week there are various theme night such as games nights but there are a number of board games available at any time and these games can easily be played. The decor is brilliant for fans of science fiction shows and there are a number of posters and signed pictures around the place and there is a glass cabinet of merchandise ranging from classic Star Wars and superman collectables. Next to this here is a table which is a scene from an alien landing and a comfortable booth. Located near china town I always have to visit this bar when I stay over in Manchester. Thereupon are also tv screens located all around that will play classic cartoons, movies and tv shows.

Don't get me wrong, I still think the Fab chain is, well, fab, I just think that the next time I go to the one in Manchester, it'll have to be at the end of the night when I'm pie-eyed and youngsters, smells, dirty toilets and crap dancing don't bother me. Going back to the toilets though - have you read the graffiti on the doors/walls in there? Some of it is hilarious, poetic even! You could be in there for hours just reading. Anyway, I think Fab Manchester deserves a second chance as we went in there quite early on in the evening and I guess it doesn't really come to life until a bit later. I will say that I was a tad disappointed in the state of it though and reckon they could do with putting some money into giving it a revamp, or even just a good scrub. Usually at least £5 to get in it has a really long bar down one side of it and a medium size dance floor at the end. Decor is by the way really, it's always dark with tacky disco lights and the smell of many a ladies pulling perfume! I've had some real giggles in Mambo's, usually when I am home visiting my family and my friends have dragged me in so we can carry on drinking. Usually I have to be pretty drunk to go in but if you are from the local area you are bound to bump into lots of people you know. The DJ is dreadful, playing the usual mix of bad R n B, disco, pop and anything that people can grind away to on the dance floor or dance in a seductive yet drunk manner whilst eyeing up their potential victim it's not as bad as it sounds but in all honestly I've always thought it was a bit of a meat market. The bar staff are very efficient, the bouncers do their job well and the drinks aren't too expensive. If it was me I'd hop on a train to Manchester town centre and go experience some of the great bars that are out there, however for an occassional local one it does the job!

This is one of best examples of a cheesy 80's nightclub you will ever come across. A friend of mine describes Mambos as a giant living room, and it's a fair description. It's basically a meat market of women on the dance floor and men around it eyeing them up. Mambos is fairly empty till about 11.30 and so if you go too early you will end up with the whole dance floor to yourself (which could be a good thing as it isn't that big) but it does get very busy later. It's £5 to get in, and the decor and seating is best described as limited, and it is quite dark, apart from the dance floor area. Mambos has a really big bar, which is a plus point because you always get served fairly quickly, but by contrast has very few toilets, and there's always a massive queue for these, and occasionally a bit of argy bargy as people are trying to queue jump etc. The drinks are reasonably priced compared to other nightclubs, but usually by the time I end up in there I have had more than enough anyway, and so I often just get bottled water. The music provided by the DJ isn't that great and is quite cheesy. My friends and I always get the feeling that he that he only owns about 20 records. Everytime we goto Mambos we try to test this theory by asking him to play certain things in the charts (which are not outrageous or anything) all night and you get ignored and it is never played. But if we ask for something tacky that we know he likes and he plays EVERY week, it's on straight away. Reading this you are probably thinking if Mambos is that bad they why do you go, but sometimes Tacky is good!. You don't have to have any airs or graces in Mambos, you just have a laugh with your mates and dance about. There are bouncers on the door, and I guess there is a dress policy, but I am unsure what it is, because there are people in there who look like they have come straight from the gym, or from doing their shopping. If I arranged a nice night out I would rather be far better off ending up at a night club in Manchester City Centre or Didsbury, but for a fun, tacky night out with mates in Urmston unless a rival night club suddenly decides to open, then there is nothing to top Mambos.
