By far my favourite aspect about Alabama's is that it's not trying too hard to be 'American Style' it doesn't feel like one of the bandwagon American burger or hot dog joints popping up all over the city. It's just casually American or you could say it has a more intelligent nod to Americana in it's decor and attitude but maintain's a Northern attitude. Like the straight out of Mad Men 1960s Piccadilly Station print on the wall, the wooden star clock on the opposite wall or the red light shades. We went for breakfast and the selection was familiar but pleasantly different. With selections of classic breakfasts which could be Americanised with Texas toast for e.g. (I didn't see any grits which I'd love to see their take on). I had the Eggs Benedict with Ham Hock, it's one of those dishes which is a great judge of a place as it only has a few ingredients any one of which can disappoint. Alabama's was spot on. In fact I'm thinking that the ham hock possibly works better than streak bacon which I hate myself for saying, but it's less salty and gives it a more rustic homey feel. Which I really enjoyed. I love my coffee and I can say their flat white was spot on for me. The staff seem great here as well, very welcoming and friendly, offering to give suggestions or anwser any questions about the food. There aren't a huge number of places even in the city centre where I can guarantee a good breakfast and a great coffee in the same spot. I'm glad to have found another to add to my list.

Okay so a weird thing I do now is when I visit a brand new place and have an amazing time, I wait until I visit a second time to review it - not because I don't trust my own judgement, but because sometimes I can be caught up in the 'oh they're new' trap and be more favourable. So cue Alabama's All American Eatery! I visited a few weeks back for a breakfast catch up with Seb H, I had the two eggs your way and the big man had steak - both of which where perfectly presented and tasted equally as fantastic. My poached eggs were cooked just right and the yolks exploded over my crispy bacon, tasty sausage patty and buttery english muffin - exactly what I like! The home fries on my dish were perhaps the best bit though, proper potatoes, sliced and cooked just right! I washed all this down with 2 flat whites (very nice) and some of the house water which is stupidly refreshing! The waitress informed us that she played around with a few combinations and settled on lemon, orange and cucumber - whatever was in there, it's bloody nice. I walked out stuffed with fantastic food and happy with brilliant service already plotting my return! That return was today, for breakfast with the missus. In true Matt F form, I had the exact same dish, and lo and behold it was just as scrumptious this time round! On this occasion I had an americano and I got a little bit too excited at the presentation of this (picture to follow) as they give you the fresh brewed espresso shot and then a pot of hot water to make your own strength - little touches like that do wonders for me honestly. 5 stars for a fabulous new yankie paradise!

Going with the all-American theme, I think the staff in here may quite potentially be the most gung-ho helpful I have encountered in quite some time. Seriously like, SO. NICE. And not even too nice. That nice that's so nice that it's even impossible to disagree with. Now that's all well and good, but ya gotta have the goods to back up the niceness. They have it, in spades. 1. Decor. My favourite type - mid-century atomic style with a nice contemporary twist. Feels quirky without being overtly so, and homely too. 2. Food. WOW. I foolishly was trying to be healthy so I got an omelette. I asked for avocado and pulled ham with it - both came in bowls that could have been shared between five people. Every table I looked at had something more delicious on it. Next time I'm going for the French toast. Or the waffles... Or.. 3. Did I mention the staff? Couldn't give this place less than 5 stars, absolutely lovely on all counts.

Three stack bacon and maple syrup pancakes

I'm so happy I have finally got to try this place. I expected a long wait for a table as it was brunch o'clock on Saturday, we were told it would be around 20 minutes for a table for two so not outrageous. They have a great system in place, you leave your name and number and can go for a wander whilst you wait and they will call as soon as a table is ready. There isn't a lot of space so this avoids large volumes of people loitering in the door way. It was literally minute until they called us and we were seated. I opted for my standard cup of tea to drink, I was tempted by the shakes but didn't want to fill myself up before stuffing my face with pancakes. I ordered a three stack of pancakes with maple syrup and bacon and my friend opted for the berry option. There were all sorts of delights on the menu such as French toast and waffles but I had heard good things about the pancakes. They were delicious and fresh, I'm glad I had three not five as I was so full. The staff were lovely and attentive. Just one thing to note, tips on card don't go to the staff so try and tip in cash.

Manchester's hosting of new American-inspired cafes and restaurants may be continuing unabated, but in amongst those churning out the hot dogs, burgers and buffalo wings are the little gems like Alabama's. This breakfast and brunch joint has transformed what my learned friend informed me used to be a takeaway on the NQ's Newton Street. It's now an airy and well-designed space with an open kitchen and bar stools for dining at the pass - you can also find yourself a booth in the back or a table by the massive front windows and have lots of light to work or read. Alongside the usual staple dishes of mac 'n' cheese, pancakes and waffles, they offer less typical (for Manchester) meals such as shellfish over rice with Creole seasoning. As we were there around brunch-time, two of us opted for their tempting Classic Benedict with ham hock (and a side of avocado) - it was so satisfying it's up there with one of the best dishes of its type I've had. If you order their full breakfast (I've forgotten it's name) it comes with gravy on the plate so be sure to mention if you want it on the side or not. Our servers throughout were smiley (but genuinely) and efficient; our wait times were minimal despite it being busy and they couldn't do more for us. Having our bill delivered sticking out of a classic novel was, well novel, and I smirked a bit when another table left having paid and a woman got up to tell them that they'd left their book behind - I wonder how many times that will happen! A super little addition to this side of the NQ; and not too far from Piccadilly if you fancied a light bite before or after your train.

American pancakes with berries, berry compote and chantilly cream

I have the claim of being the 3rd customer on the opening day of Alabama's and I don't think it will be the last time I grace them with my presence! It's an American diner styled restaurant/cafe but they didn't go with the kitsch diner style theme, the decor is lovely and welcoming. I went for breakfast/brunch and had a difficult time choosing, I went in the end for traditional American pancakes with slightly less traditional berries and chantilly cream; droolsome! Although next time (and there will be a next time), I'll go even more traditional with bacon and maple syrup! I was slightly distracted at the thought of pancakes to properly look at the lunch menu, but I clocked sweet potato fries which are an absolute favourite of mine, so they've got a big tick for that. The staff were really friendly and chatty and even brought me a free bowl of granola with cream and cinnamon sauce to try out as I'd been ogling a dish earlier! Would highly recommend!

Cinnamon swirls and coffee to go. Not all for me!

I like a good breakfast. I like a good steak. Alabama's combines these into one crazy mouthwatering dish. Basically it's American breakfasts with a modern twist. The menu initial seems a good size but there are far more hidden options when you start to read. Pick Waffles, pancakes or French Toast, pic 3 or 5 pieces then pic a topping to adorn it with. Then repeat this for breads, muffins and sandwiches and there's a great range. We plumped for a 4oz Steak, cooked pick l pink, with an egg (cooked any way), a pork patty served on chips on top of a pancake, topped with gravy and crispy bacon. Heaven! We chose a shake each which was topped with treats. These were very rich so we saved them for after our meal as a liquid dessert. Perfect! With loads of variations you can't ask for much more.

Came here with my sister for a birthday breakfast after a heavy night out in Manchester so we were craving salty goodness and this place really delivered. We had the classic breakfast with a side of avocado and I had the French toast and my sister opted for the pancakes. It was cooked really well, the bacon was nice and crispy and the poached eggs were perfect! My only critique would be the avocado could benefit from a bit of seasoning. The waitresses were really chatty and down to earth, we age to wait about 30mins for food, but it was quite busy. Definitely one to try if in Manchester

Not a fan boo... not a fan...and I wanted my proper American breakfast since I was missing home but this wasn't it. I liked the concept and the name... Alabama's All American Eatery. With a restaurant name that includes Alabama, I expected this place to make a BAM in my mouth but it was just a bomb in flavour . I ordered a standard American breakfast- 2 runny eggs, sausage, streaky bacon, pancakes, and hash. Can't really mess this up, but surprisingly they did. The eggs were cooked nicely, but the pancake was not. It wasn't cooked all the way through and the middle was doughey. The size of the pancake was not by any means an American size pancake! The sausage was not the same type of sausage you get in the US... Sooo disappointed cause I was hoping it would be. The streaky bacon had a nice maple flavour but was limp and not crunchy. The potatoes were ok. The bad thing about the plate is the drizzle of brown sauce. American breakfast do not have any type of brown sauce! Negative! My friend ordered the steak and eggs, don't get me started with that! Let's just say they overcooked the steak, it wasn't pink as what my friend asked for and the bacon was limp, sausage tasted blah and the potatoes were ok. Honestly, if you want real American breakfast this is totally not the place to get it. If you're American, Denny's grand slam plate is better than this place and it's cheaper.

I'd spotted so many people talking about this place that after a heavy weekend in Wales with a bit of a hangover, I decided to give it a try! First the drinks - I ordered a mint tea and a Coke - the tea was absolutely amazing and there was plenty of it! And I loved the fact the cokes came in ice cream sundae cups! Then, the food... I went for one of their signature 4 egg omelettes - with the ham hock and all in between - it was AMAZING. Absolutely massive, totally packed full and just the right amount of salad on the side to make me think it was almost pretty healthy. My boyfriend had the Mac and cheese - naturally I pinched a spoonful, and it was Devine. So creamy and bloody cheesy! I will most certainly be back for more!

Excellent breakfasts. A true gem of Manchester! Sometimes a bit of a wait but we'll worth it the portion sizes are great.

I had the big steak breakfast. Very tasty! Had to wait for 30 min for a table but it was worth it. Friendly people and fast service once seated.

It is a very cute place to have breakfast/lunch. The staff was kind and the service was quick! I ordered the Royal which was basically an eggs Benedict with salmon! Would definitely recommend!

I took up residence in the dimly lit back area, where the cheerful waitstaff promptly took my order of a blood orange hot chocolate made with almond milk (!) The drink came out frothy and light, with a cloud of chocolate-dusted milk foam atop subtle, smooth chocolate. No bitter or artificial aftertaste. While bopping along to the background music and working on my laptop, I was informed that Leaf would close early at 19h instead of 20h, so I seized the opportunity to order dinner as well: the jerk lamb rump, and an order of jasmine pearl tea. The waiter helped me verify that the lamb was free of dairy, and soon I was chowing down on succulent roast lamb and garlicky roast beans. The mango jam was a perfect accompaniment to the meat, but I found the coconut/coriander rice too mushy to my taste. It helped me to imagine them as mashed potatoes instead, haha. The tea was sensuously fragrant, and I welcomed the scented fog clouding my glasses. I wish I could have stayed there longer, but I might return for brunch or tea - Leaf is truly a serene, wonderful establishment.

But now to the rest a teatime should be sacred time with loved once an hour to relax calm down and enjoy good tea and food. We had the queens tea and it comes as a full high tea with scones, sandwiches and sweets. While the service - as already mentioned was great (they switched one set to vegetarian sandwiches) - the sandwiches have not been. The toast was a bit try on the edges and the actual spread and creations have been lackluster to be friendly. The chickpea vegetarian was the best by far. The scones clearly made in house fresh and really good tasting. But they have been more like a bead bun in consistency- but together with the clotted cream very very good. Just not really scones. This tea room also did disappointed me with just serving a tiny glass of industrial made strawberry preserves. They also only serve one "scone" per person and did not offered any more sandwiches or scones. And then finally the "sweets" the Richmond tea room takes that word very very literal. Besides a macaron and a little passionfruit tartlet they served two pieces of cake that have both been tasting like sugar only. While looking ok they just had no taste whatsoever other than just being overly sweet. No fruit flavor or distinctive taste. Since I left mine untouched since they were just not good maybe that why they don't offered more sandwiches or scones. All in all it was just not the teatime I was looking for spending with my husband as quality time we slowed down drinking the tea but we did not really enjoyed the food and that messed up the experience. Sadly. Starting with five stars I'll take one of for the stall sandwiches, another one for uninspired sweets and a third for the jam and overall price / quality relations. Since I would have lived with it when it would have been a cheap teatime in a restaurant, but it's a location that ha w tea room even in the name.

This was the first time I'd eaten here and everything was ok, the key word being ok. My starter of smoked salmon and cream cheese parcel was tasty but the marinated ribbons of cucumber needed seasoning and the dish needed another texture. A few slices of melba toast would have been perfect. For main I'd chosen steak which had been described as being served pink but yet somehow was still dry. Accompaniments of grilled tomatoes and roast potatoes were fine but chips seemed more of an obvious choice to go with steak and the roasties just weren't crispy enough as a sub. Dessert was a delicious chocolate salted caramel tart which was luscious, rich and indulgent, just as it should have been and ended the meal on a high. We found service to be very hit and miss, with a non-apologetic waitress (bordering on surly) when my friend queried the gravy on her roast dinner that had been requested without, due to a gluten allergy.
