This building was more museum like and less active use than others we have been to. They had several other buildings on the grounds where the assembly, senate, and state supreme court are actively working. The governor's office was still in the original main building. They had some nice museum displays that we walked through on our self guided tour. We came on a weekday and were able to walk through most every area of the building. The original rooms for the assembly, senate, and supreme court were preserved to be as they may have been in their early days of use. There was a lot of wood accents throughout the foyer area on the staircases and trim. The outside grounds had some monuments and statues to see, and a lot of lush green trees around the building. We could not get a photo of the exterior of the building with the dome due to the heavy tree cover. There was a scale model in the museum that shows what the structure looks like so we got an idea of the size and configuration. If in town, I'd recommend making this stop to experience the heart of US history.

This beautiful building houses the office of several primary government officials in Nevada. In that reception area is a very old bank vault door that used to hold some of the states treasures. The receptionist will give you a brief history of it. Upstairs, is the Lt. Governor and Treasurer along with a room of Nevada history. I found this building to be interesting and educational. On the walls are portraits of past Governors. Budget about 30 minutes to visit and the best news is that it's free. Also street parking is free for 2 hours.

The Governor's Mansion complex includes the home and an adjacent (and nicely appointed) Reception Building, where this event took place. The impressive 2-story Governor's mansion itself is within a residential neighborhood of Carson City, and apparently is a stop along the Kit Carson Trail. The Governor's Mansion is also known to be one of the most haunted places in Nevada.

Here and there are various monuments to important Nevada historical events and historical figures. My daughter's elementary school went for a field trip so I went as a chaperone. I had never been…read morebefore and was pleasantly surprised. There are different areas to see with different exhibits. They have one of the original minted coin presses and the man that was giving the information was dressed the part, entertaining, and knowledgeable. All the staff was engaging in each area and you could tell that they genuinely were interested in the history and teaching others about it. The kids favorite area was the "ghost town" since there is a mine that you go through. I definitely learned things I didn't know about Nevada (not originally from the area though).

The Memorial is somewhat tucked into the back of the grounds of the State Capitol, but is well worth the walk and honor of admiring such a stunning tribute to Nevada solders who gave their life for us. Looking up, you'll see their names displayed by conflict and within the context of this quiet, compact and rustic plaza. It only takes a few minutes to take a look, and like me I hope you'll come back.

Carson City and the Carson River that goes through the city are named after Kit Carson who explored…read morethe area and found a new route across the Sierras with John C. Fremont. Also referred to as the "Daniel Boone of the West," Christopher Houston Carson was a fur trapper, wilderness guide, Indian agent, and U.S. Army officer. He became a frontier legend in his own lifetime through biographies and news articles, and exaggerated versions of his exploits that were the subject of dime novels. It also includes maps of Nevada showing his various travels through the state. The marker below reads, "It was in the winter of 1843 - 1844 when Kit Carson, along with the John C. Carson, depicted here, tracking his way through the mountains east of this location, was considered one of the best mountain men of the day. His name is still synonymous with the wide-open spaces and lore of the American west, an image we still cherish as part of our freedom and heritage. Water usually flows downhill, but we heard of a place where it also flows uphill. To find this…read morehydraulic mystery spot, we went for a hike above the Lakeview neighborhood, just north of Carson City. In 1873, to operate the mines of the Comstock Lode, a 21 mile water delivery system was built to carry 2 million gallons of water per day from Marlette Lake to Virginia City. To get the water across Washoe Valley, the 7-mile long Washoe Pressure Pipe was constructed. The U-shaped pipeline is an inverted siphon that still supplies Virginia City with its drinking water. To see this historic civil engineering landmark, we started at the Lakeview Gate at the end of Hobart Road, and hiked about 2.5 miles up the steep well-graded service road. At the top of the siphon, we saw the rusted remains of the original 11.5-inch diameter iron pipeline, now replaced by a modern water delivery system. Through the Washoe Pressure Pipe, water dives steeply beneath Highway 395 near the old water masters house at Lakeview Summit. The hydrostatic pressure here at the bottom of the U, is great enough to force the water back uphill to the Comstock. The climb to this engineering marvel was a worthwhile workout. We were rewarded with impressive views of Washoe Valley, and found a place where water flows uphill. Directions to Trailhead: On Highway 395, just south of Washoe Lake, take the Eastlake Blvd. exit. On the west side of the exit, head south on the Old U.S. 395 frontage road for 0.5 miles. Make a right on Hobart Road, enter the Lakeview neighborhood, and travel 0.8 miles west. The trail head is at the end of Hobart Road.
